Awards of Excellence KEY SERVICE AWARD

spirit of sheridan award

Sheridan Senior Center

Mike Nickel

This award honors a Chamber member nonprofit organization that has made a significant impact in Sheridan County: a nonprofit that serves with enthusiasm and dedication, addressing needs in the community and aligning the vision of its organization for maximum effectiveness. The Sheridan Senior Center strives to celebrate, embrace and serve older adults in the community. In 1973, the center began under a volunteer group and since then has grown tremendously. Last year, the Sheridan Senior Center served more individuals than any other Wyoming senior center and within the last five years has increased its services and support by about 35 percent. With such significant growth and national studies evidencing this growth will rapidly increase for the next 15 years as the Baby Boomer generation journeys through life, the Senior Center realizes the need for expansion. As a result, the center has been working on a project called Celebrating Generations and Building Community to expand the Senior Center. The initial goal of $7 million was surpassed in November 2015 by $2.4 million, so a new goal has been set at $10 million. The campaign is providing funding for: • an expansion for the kitchen and dining area, to help provide nutritious and delicious meals to more people at the center, at satellite locations and through the Home-Delivered Meals program. • a new Day Break facility, providing valuable respite for caregivers while their loved ones can spend their day in a safe, fun and individualized environment. • an expansion of the Transportation Center, enabling the Senior Center to service more individuals with the Mini-Bus program, including adding a fixed route with regular bus stops. • providing $2 million for the Loving Legacy Endowment, which provides sustainability and ensures that the Sheridan Senior Center will be here to help people in perpetuity. This will also help kick off the big goal for the endowment, which is $10 million in 10 years.

This award honors a business or individual who volunteers countless hours for the betterment of the Chamber and Sheridan County: demonstrates vision, ambition and drive to serve the community and the mission of the Chamber, understanding a community thrives when those in it invest and contribute to its success. Mike Nickel is a fourth generation Sheridan County resident who graduated from Sheridan High School in 1972. He then went on to serve six years in the U.S. Navy in advanced electronics, and eventually started his 27-year tenure as an electrician and business owner with Ultimate Electric. Currently, Nickel serves as a Sheridan County commissioner, and has since 2009. Commissioner Nickel believes the best style of leadership for a successful community is servant leadership. Whether serving in business or community, he leads with others in mind. This philosophy is evident in Nickel’s extensive and diverse background in serving the community. He has been a Sheridan County Chamber of Commerce member for more than 25 years, served on the Chamber board from 1998-2004, and was board president in 2002 and 2003. He is the past chair of the Chamber’s Ag and Natural Resources committee and has won previous awards for his volunteerism at the Chamber. He is also a graduate of the Leadership Sheridan County program. Nickel currently serves as a Chamber ambassador, cochair of the Chamber’s Business Retention and Expansion Committee, and is part of the Chamber’s Government Affairs Committee. If his involvement at the Chamber doesn’t impress, his additional community volunteerism will. Nickel was on the Northern Wyoming Community College Board of Trustees from 2004-2008 and was board chair from 2005-2008. He also volunteers at the Sheridan Senior Center, Farmers Market, Downtown Sheridan Association and the Suds ‘n’ Spurs Brewfest. Nickel also is a member of the Big Horn Lions Club and Sheridan Rotary Club and is a current board member at Citco Federal Credit Union. Nickel enjoys serving in such a great community and states “when we help others succeed and give back, we all succeed. Behind any vibrant successful community is an army of volunteers who give back with their time, effort and resources.” Nickel models this every day and truly embodies the “Spirit of Sheridan” award.

strength of sheridan AWArd Farmers Co-op This award honors a Chamber member business or organization that has a long and distinguished tenure in the community (20+ years): an organization that demonstrates consistent service, continually invests in the community and demonstrates sustained quality performance. For 73 years, the Farmers Co-op has provided Sheridan County with propane, bulk fuels, work equipment, fertilizer, fencing, animal care and livestock feeds. The business was established in 1943, but the building they were in for almost 60 years was built in 1957. At that time, the business also offered a full-service car garage. Over the years, needs changed in the community, but Farmers Co-op continued to adapt, never sacrificing customer service and product knowledge. Recognizing the opportunity to provide expanded services, the members voted to buy two building lots on Coffeen Avenue. After an extensive building project that included tearing down one of the existing structures, adding gas pumps and

expanding and renovating another structure, Farmers Co-op reopened on Labor Day of 2015. The new location is a full convenience store and gas station, while still providing all the products they offered before. The business remains a co-op, owned by the member patrons. Farmers Co-op prides itself in knowledge of its products and customer service, and is thankful for its patrons and their business which has spanned more than seven decades.

Advanced Communications Technology (ACT)

Historic Sheridan Inn

This award honors a Chamber member large business that serves the Sheridan area with excellence: a business that maintains consistent growth and strong performance, understands its customer, has an engaged workforce with effective leadership and is continually innovating to support future growth. This business not only invests in its continued success, but also invests its resources in the success of the community. Whether for small business or large, communications carrier or ISP, Advanced Communications Technology’s advanced fiber optic network truly provides worldwide communications access without limits. ACT is focused on bringing the highest level of technology to the Sheridan area and beyond. ACT began offering communications solutions in 1997 under its parent company, Range Telephone Cooperative. In 2001, ACT completed the installation of an advanced fiber optic network between Montana and Wyoming. This network connected the Montana Vision Net fiber optic network and major interstate carriers in Casper, Wyoming. Fiber facilities were installed west of Casper in 2002, completing fiber connectivity to northwest Wyoming. In 2015, yet another expansion project was completed, extending ACT’s fiber optic network to southern Wyoming. As a result of these efforts, ACT’s network now extends over 1,400 miles and connects Wyoming and the city of Sheridan to the rest of the nation via connections to South Dakota, Montana, Idaho, Colorado and Nebraska. ACT continues to expand a fiber optic communications network in Sheridan and is offering a full suite of state-of-the-art communications services, including broadband Internet with speeds up to 1 Gig, optical ethernet, primary rate services, voice solutions and a host of advanced business solutions. ACT not only invests in technology, but also invests in its employees and the community. ACT sponsors many community activities, such as the Best of the West BBQ Fest and the Suds ‘n’ Spurs Brewfest. In addition, the staff are active participants in Forward Sheridan, Downtown Sheridan Association, Sheridan County Chamber of Commerce, Sheridan Memorial Hospital Foundation and many other local organizations. Aaron Sopko, CEO of ACT, also serves on the board of directors for the Wyoming Business Council. ACT consistently shows through its actions how dedicated it is to the Sheridan area. 12

I A SPECIAL EDITION OF DESTINATION SHERIDAN MAGAZINE

This award honors a Chamber member small business that serves the Sheridan area with excellence: a business that maintains consistent growth and strong performance, understands its customer, has an engaged workforce with effective leadership and is continually innovating to support future growth. This business not only invests in its continued success, but also invests its resources in the success of the community. If you know anything about Sheridan and its history, you have heard of the Historic Sheridan Inn. It’s the real deal, opening in 1893 as a joint project between Burlington Missouri Railroad and the Sheridan Land Company. The first electric lights to ever be turned on in Sheridan were streaming out from each of the inn’s 69 gables. Buffalo Bill Cody took up residence at the inn from 1894-1902 and used the front lawn to hold auditions for his “Wild West” show. Up until the mid-1960s, the inn continued to serve Sheridan as a hotel and an emblem of the West. However, it fell upon some hard times, and for 50 years no longer operated as a hotel. Many ups and downs affected the inn as devoted people strived to save the historic landmark. Then, in October 2013, Bob and Dana Townsend became the newest owners of the Sheridan Inn, dreaming of the bright future that lie ahead for this beloved property. In January 2015, the Open Range Restaurant opened its doors inside the inn, and on May 15, 2015, the hotel portion opened its doors to guests for the first time in 50 years. The Townsends envision the inn being a place where families and friends can gather for good music, fun events and delicious food. The inn was just named the “Best Preservation of a Western Building” by True West magazine. The Sheridan Inn has been revived and now its significant history can be shared with generations to come.

Awards of Excellence BUSINESS PERSON OF THE YEAR award Bruce Garber

This award honors a Chamber member business person who shows outstanding business acumen and strong leadership in business and community efforts. This person is a champion for economic development, constantly strives to exceed customer expectations, delivers industry leading standards of service and quality and exhibits innovation in business development. Bruce Garber grew up in Big Horn, Wyoming, and graduated from Big Horn High School. He attended college in Wisconsin and when he graduated he returned to Sheridan and began working for BHJ Realty in 1989. Eventually, Garber bought the business in 2005 and is currently the broker/owner at Century 21 BHJ Realty, commenting that, “assisting people in buying and selling real estate is my paying job.” Nationally, he serves on an advisory board for Century 21, and has won myriad awards through the company. The most prestigious was the Art Bartlett 2100 Cup Award he received in 2014, awarded annually to a company branch that demonstrates exceptional community leadership and professionalism. Garber is thankful for the people who have mentored him and has enjoyed his business career in Sheridan. “Sheridan is a great city

with wonderful amenities that exist because of the great people behind the projects. Philanthropy is at a high level in Sheridan and we are fortunate to have what many other cities don’t,” commented Garber. He believes it takes a great volunteer base to keep things going and Garber puts his money where his mouth is. Garber has been very involved with the Sheridan-Johnson Critical Air Service Team. He is the CAST president, and has spent a considerable amount of his personal time and resources in the pursuit of reliable commercial air service. With the launch of the new air service on Nov. 19, 2015, Garber and the CAST team were able to see their efforts take off, celebrating, “It is great to see this come to fruition.” Garber has also served with Forward Sheridan, the YMCA, the Kibee Foundation and the Big Horn Education Fund. A humble man, Garber considers it flattering and an honor to be thought of as a leader. “As the years tick by, you find yourself more and more involved. It just kind of happens.”

Think local first By Ryan Koltiska

Director of marketing & communications, Sheridan County Chamber of Commerce

SHOP LOCAL: a phrase that is often heard and possibly not taken seriously enough, but the Sheridan County Chamber of Commerce knows it is no small matter. In many conversations of late, it’s common to hear people say how easy it is to shop online, how convenient it is to shop at home, how hard it is to find what they are looking for locally and myriad other instantgratification answers that our culture falls into easily. And I get it. I understand the simplicity of shopping from my couch with the click of a button and having an item show up at my doorstep. That is easy. I understand that it takes more time to drive to a store than to search for it on the Web. But I also see the other side. I worked in a retail store in Sheridan for several years and it was then I became enlightened about the need to shop local. It never ceased to amaze me how many people came in to ask for a donation for local causes: athletic teams, fundraisers for individuals or families and local nonprofits. Everyone had a great cause, and all were looking for ways to raise money. Even more amazing to me was the generosity of the owners who gave a donation of some sort to almost everyone who asked. After a year of working at the business, I realized how important it was for me to shop in my community. Those people weren’t going online or to a town a couple hours from Sheridan asking for donations. They were asking local businesses. It was about that same time I started a little “game” with myself. Every time some fundraiser or good cause was advertised in the paper, radio or on a poster, I would take a few moments to notice the sponsors and donors. Have you ever tried that? It has become a fascination to see how many times I spot certain businesses listed. I often get overwhelmed with the generosity of the businesses in Sheridan County who give time after time. Then I got to thinking about my neighbors and friends who work at local businesses and how my purchases help pay their salaries. How about all the amenities our great community has as a result of local sales tax? I love all our parks, clean streets,

14

I Community Guide & Chamber Member Directory 2016

library, police and fire departments, etc. When I shop through that lens, I find it much easier to shut off the computer and head down to a local business. The Chamber puts high value on efforts to boost local shopping, through the Christmas “Get Caught Shopping” promotion, partnerships with the Downtown Sheridan Association and our Chamber Bucks program that keeps money local. We don’t push local shopping because of money, but for the principle of investing in the community that continues to invest in you. Here’s the best part: the community gets it, too! Our Chamber Bucks program continues to grow every year. In 2015, we beat our $75,000 goal by more than $10,000! That is all money that gets spent at local businesses. If you have been to Sheridan and the surrounding area, you have fallen in love. It’s pretty special, but only because of the local businesses, owners and employees who keep investing in the community we all love. Keep it up, and we’ll keep doing our part here at the Chamber.

the sheridan county Chamber of commerce

Working for you! By Ryan Koltiska

WHAT DOES THE CHAMBER DO? This is one of the most common questions staff members at the Sheridan County Chamber of Commerce receive when talking to new businesses or those unfamiliar with our organization. Interestingly enough, it is not an easy question to answer, not because of the lack of topics to discuss, but mostly because of the incredible diversity and quantity of ways the Chamber works for its members. The Chamber is focused on being the proactive voice of local business, working for the promotion, protection and prosperity of its members and the community, and that means a lot of things. On the larger scale, the Chamber is the eyes and ears of the community, and has been since 1913. The Chamber is often the first to know about new businesses, possible business threats, government regulations that affect businesses and need to be addressed, and anything else that might come up in day-to-day business dealings. The Chamber is established to serve the community first, so the Chamber makes a consistent effort to promote local business and help the economy in the area. This comes in a variety of forms, from coordinating the Sheridan Christmas Stroll (for 20 years!) and many other events, to promoting shopping local, to advocating and being an integral part in securing commercial air service to the community. The Chamber exists solely to represent the business community as a whole, so maintaining close relationships with local officials and being the voice for businesses in legislation is something that is constantly happening year round. On a more individual basis, the Chamber is passionate about helping each business thrive. Whether through member newsletters, sponsorship opportunities, networking events or personal recommendations, the Chamber wants businesses to get their names

out and strives to provide and improve those opportunities. Member businesses can participate in ribbon cuttings, Business After Hours events, Chamber Luncheons and in one of our many committees. The Sheridan County Chamber firmly believes in networking, and continues to see the proven benefits of meeting other business owners, managers and employees and working together. Another exciting Chamber project is the Leadership Sheridan County program, now in its 23rd year. The 10-month program is designed to give participants an overview of Sheridan County and all the facets that make a community work. From health care and education to history and the arts, the program provides participants a way to meet the leaders in the county and see where their own talents might fit. The program is a “must” for anyone looking to take that next step in leadership development. What else could the Chamber possibly do? Well, it also has developed the Ignite Your Business Professional Development Conference to help businesses get the training locally they need for success. For more in-depth insight, the Chamber’s Peer Groups program is a way for owners and managers to help strengthen their businesses, improve efficiencies and grow jobs. Even more, the Chamber organizes the annual Legislative Forums, as well as candidate and issue forums on occasion. There’s more, but in a nutshell, the Chamber wants businesses and the community to succeed. And everything it does lines up with that mission. Want to take part in all the action? The Chamber takes pride in its devoted volunteers and businesses who want to invest in the success of the entire community, and is always ready to help you find your perfect fit!

why we By Shawn Parker Executive director, Sheridan Travel & Tourism

DID YOU KNOW that you can now Fly Sheridan every day of the week? It’s true; Sheridan County Airport has one of the most efficient, reliable and comfortable air service programs in Wyoming. Reliable jet service is incredibly important to small Mountain West communities – there’s a big difference between a 1-hour flight and a 7-hour drive, after all – and the boost provided to local business, events and tourism by air service is significant. Civic leaders, community members, the state of Wyoming and hundreds of other stakeholders have worked hard to bring air service back to the region, and to date, the program has been a runaway success. Partner airline Denver Air Connection has put an incredible product into the air; if you’ve already used the service, you know that

20

I Community Guide & Chamber Member Directory 2016

the company’s jets are big, comfortable and quick. It’s nice to unwind for an hour and imagine you’re flying home on your own private plane (especially with a Black Tooth Brewing Company libation in hand). More important than the creature comforts on board are the facts on reliability in the air. Getting to where you need to be on the day you need to get there is the point of flying anywhere, after all. Through Jan. 5, 2016, Denver Air Connection flew 158 scheduled flights between Sheridan County Airport and Denver International Airport, and was on time 154 times. Of those flights, four have met with delays due to inclement weather (the longest delay was 1.5 hours), while two were canceled outright due to the early December storm that disrupted more than 400 inbound and outbound flights. Denver Air Connection’s early success rate of 98.75 percent is virtually unparalleled in the airline industry, so I think we’re lucky to be working with such an incredible partner. What’s also exciting is that the word is really starting to spread throughout the community, into neighbor states and beyond. Our booking numbers show that we’re gaining momentum each and every week. On Monday, Jan. 5, we set a new single day booking record with 168 – our previous record was 63. We have booked passengers from 41 different states and transported passengers from half a dozen countries. So the word is spreading – an amazing service coupled with strong messaging means that we’re looking forward to a long partnership with Denver Air Connection, which in turn means big returns, economically and socially, for Sheridan and Johnson counties. Sheridan’s new air service is reliable, convenient and comfortable, and the easiest, safest and most scenic way to travel between Denver, Colorado, and northern Wyoming. I hope that the community and the region will continue to support this endeavor, and continue to Fly Sheridan. for more information, see www.flysheridan.com.

MAIN STREET:

Celebration and commerce

By Beth Holsinger

Executive director, Downtown Sheridan Association

THE DOWNTOWN SHERIDAN ASSOCIATION is approaching its 30-year anniversary! The payoff for all of the many years of hard work by a few dedicated staff and the many committed volunteers are awards like the USA Todays “Most Picturesque Small Town in Wyoming” article published in the Oct. 28, 2015, edition. The DSA mission is to enhance and preserve historic downtown Sheridan to ensure economic prosperity. By placing public art, adding beautiful streetscapes that complement our historic downtown, providing green space and pathways leading to and from downtown, and hosting events on Main Street and Grinnell Plaza, we have been strategically placemaking for more than a decade! Utilizing the National Main Street Four Point Approach, DSA board members and community volunteers meet monthly to discuss promotions, design and economic restructuring of our historic down-

town. These committees help organize people of all ages who volunteer and give back time and effort to make Sheridan the community we all cherish. Whether gathering at 7 a.m. on a cool spring morning to transplant flowers and hang up more than 120 flower baskets on Main Street, participating in set up and tear down at all of our downtown events including the Third Thursday Street Festival and Farmers Markets, or helping to organize and promote shop local campaigns, our Main Street volunteers and staff have reinvested more than 3,500 volunteer hours and $100,000 into preservation and economic development efforts. Historic downtown Sheridan is a vibrant place of commerce and celebration. We love living, working, playing and shopping downtown. Some of the buildings in downtown Sheridan are more than 100 years old and are genuine landmarks of Sheridan’s rich history and culture. Our unique and celebrated old buildings are actually attractions just like the statues and events in downtown Sheridan. For a downtown to thrive, these treasured properties must be kept in good repair and their spaces well utilized with a blend of retail, residential, restaurant and office uses. With this in mind, DSA and the city of Sheridan are offering incentives to help keep the historic downtown a focal point or hub for our community. Grants for facade improvement and architectural consulting, waived permit and landfill fees, as well as a new Downtown Development Guide, are all available to help building owners with the renovation and remodeling of their buildings and spaces. We continue to focus on reducing the vacancies on Main Street and are hoping to renovate an historic building sometime soon! We also just completed work on new wayfinding signs for the entire community. The Downtown Sheridan Association Board of Directors and staff are passionate about historic downtown Sheridan and committed to helping you imagine the possibilities of your Main Street business or historic property.

Live where you want to work By Jay Stender CEO, Forward Sheridan

SEVERAL BUSINESS FACTORS ARE ESSENTIAL to enable a defendable decision driving re-location and/or expansion of a commercial operation. Sheridan’s geographical setting is attractive on first blush. The setting alone is not sufficient criteria to assure investment nor to assure business prosperity. So what distinguishes the Sheridan community from other nearby areas that we compete with for business? Raw materials for niche manufacturing and construction are readily available, cost effective and diverse. Sheridan is located on the intersection of Interstate 90 and Interstate 25 that allows movement of raw materials in all directions year around. I-90 traffic continues to increase as an east/west conduit due to more predictable

24

I Community Guide & Chamber Member Directory 2016

travel conditions. As an example, our local niche manufacturers need and can acquire hard steel, lumber and other pre-and sub-assembled components via an effective transportation network between Denver, Colorado, and Spokane, Washington. In addition, beginning in 2016, a North Main Street interchange will be reconstructed, which will improve access to ship in and out of Sheridan. Sheridan has a fully operational airport and is served by commercial service to Denver and an operational rail yard served by Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway Co. An available and motivated workforce is an advantage. Availability comes from the fact that Sheridan continues to have skilled people that choose to live here. Extractive industry development in the early 2000s intro-

duced many people into the area with a wide variety of skills that never left. To complement this base workforce, our community college can and will tailor workforce training – with emphasis on craft and trades to meet the needs. Workforce training grants are also readily available for retraining and new hires offered by the state of Wyoming. Thus the localized training needs for new hires is available and can be supported from state funds. Another operational advantage is our resource base. Sheridan has access to ample high quality, reliable power from a grid that includes hydropower, coal and wind. Ample water supply from pristine mountain sources is an advantage both from the quantity standpoint and minimal treatment requirements. Currently, Sheridan has two growing breweries that capture this high quality water. Connectivity capacity to the Web improves each month with additional dark fiber available and to further the e-commerce capacity. Sheridan houses two operational data centers to protect, store and maintain e-data at the highest levels – their service capacity includes financial, coal, petroleum, government and health care data. Availability of local data storage is efficient and enables appropriate business practices to minimize cyber intrusions locally. Live where you want to work. Local businesses, in a variety of industries, have expanded and relocated over the past four years simply to meet employee recruitment needs. Sheridan is a great place for long-term employees. Long-term employee satisfaction is enhanced through avenues for a first-class education for children, competitive health care facilities and costs, and recreational opportunities, plus a community where you are welcomed and put to work. This results in a potent combination where people and place equal prosperity.

sheridan county Chamber of commerce

Success stories THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE HAS A HISTORY of longtime membership, fostering success for local businesses. The Sheridan County Chamber of Commerce has been serving the Sheridan area for more than 100 years. It began in 1913 and has since worked to be a proactive voice for local business, primarily focusing on the promotion, protection and prosperity of its members. The Sheridan County Chamber of Commerce has a mix of new and longtime members. Some members have been a part of the Chamber’s ranks for decades. For example, Carroll’s Furniture, Farmers Co-op, First Federal Bank & Trust, Hammer Chevrolet, JCPenney and The Sheridan Press have all seen value in the Chamber’s services for more than 50 years. Other members are new businesses that recently joined the ranks. Some of those businesses include Barn in Big Horn, Tie Flume Adventures, Dayton Mercantile, Gallery on Main, The Paint Post/Table Mountain Vineyards and the nonprofit Antelope Butte Foundation. While some businesses may come and go in Sheridan, the Chamber boasts a number of stories outlining the successes of several local companies. These companies have made a name for themselves both locally — providing job opportunities, tax revenues and other forms of economic growth for the community — and regionally, nationally and, even in some cases, internationally. Here’s a look at some recent success stories of local businesses:

black tooth brewing company

The success of the local suds producer has been brewing since it opened in 2010. The small operation has grown exponentially over the last five years, increasing its capacity from producing 35,000 cases of beer each year to 700,000. The brewery has earned more than 44 medals at competitions across the globe and, according to co-owner Tim Barnes, has quadrupled its payroll over five years. The business has also increased its sales by 40 percent over the same timeframe.

Vacuum Technologies corporation (VACUTECH) The manufacturer of central vacuum systems used in car washes and industrial markets opened in Sheridan in 2012, promising to expand and increase the number of jobs in the community. The company has grown by 30 percent every year since. The company now has 120 employees and the plan is to hire another 30 to 50 in the next two years.

tom balding bits and spurs

After high school, Tom Balding started his own company near Los Angeles, mastering difficult welding techniques and working with a variety of materials. In 1980, he moved to a piece of land just outside Buffalo, Wyoming. He took odd jobs and taught himself to ride, training his own horse. In 1984, a woman asked him to weld a broken bit and from there, Balding knew he would design and create bits and spurs. In 1998, World Champion Horseman began using his bits. Word got around. Balding moved to Sheridan and built a shop to begin manufacturing the bits and spurs from scratch. Now, his work is known around the world.

cost of living SHERIDAN REMAINS ON PAR with the rest of the state when it comes to cost of living, according to the Wyoming Economic Analysis Division. The Wyoming Cost of Living Index for the second quarter of 2015 puts Sheridan at exactly the state average with an overall score of 100. WCLI considers costs related to medical, apparel, housing, food, recreation and personal care and transportation. The data also takes a look at inflation by comparing current costs with those from the second quarter of 2014. The state of Wyoming experienced a 0.9 percent rise, and the Northeast region experienced the highest rate of inflation in the state at 2.4 percent. Sheridan County, however, proved mostly immune from the increases. With 100 being the state average, Sheridan ranked above average in food (108), apparel (121) and recreation and personal care (110). The area ranked either at or below average in housing (94), transportation (100) and medical (97) costs.

Housing and transportation are particularly interesting cases. Due to low fuel costs, transportation costs went down 4.4 percent statewide, which tempered overall inflation in Wyoming. Sheridan’s score remained the same compared to last year. Rental rates, meanwhile, mostly increased in Sheridan County but still remain well below the state average. The housing category carries the largest weight in the WCLI. The following illustrates the market in Sheridan County in the second quarter of 2015 as well as a comparison to Platte and Teton counties, the lowest and highest costs of living in Wyoming, respectively, and also the statewide average.

THE BRAND The brand was created by A.D. Creative Group with the help of a locally formed branding committee. The committee conducted surveys with both longtime residents and new arrivals while conducting independent research. The goal was to determine what makes Sheridan unique, who the community wants to reach with its message and trends that impact travel and business in the area.

HERE IS WHAT THE GROUP LEARNED: Sheridan has natural, authentic qualities of its history and people. The community is not just about growth or development. Sheridan is about a lifestyle built on historical values, community ethics and people knowing people. People come to the community because of its diverse opportunities. They stay because of the freedom to achieve their own personal objectives. Sheridan has a feeling, a sense of clarity and a natural scent in the air that pushes all of the clutter, noise and pollutions and replaces them with something fresh and pure. Sheridan delivers natural delight, authenticity and consideration for each individual’s desires, interests and values.

The group discovered what many already know. Sheridan is not just one thing. It is naturally beautiful, simple, diverse, Western, friendly, educated, mountainous, vibrant, tough and so much more. The tagline “Naturally” is now being used as the unified branding message for the Sheridan community. Its purpose is to give, in one word, a sense of what Sheridan is to its residents and can be to those seeking a new home for their family or business or a place to get away from it all.

Sheridan 1 SHERIDAN VA MEDICAL CENTER — Another large employer in Sheridan, this facility is more than a medical center, it is a huge piece of local history. In 1898, the grounds that are now the VAMC were set aside by President William McKinley to be a military fort — Fort Mackenzie. The first troops to the fort in 1901 were Buffalo Soldiers who used the fort for rest and retraining. The fort was closed by World War I and ready for demolition, but President William Howard Taft was able to get the fort transferred to the Bureau of Health as a hospital for those coming home from World War II. The hospital opened in 1922. Now, it serves more than 12,000 veterans annually. For more information, see sheridanva.gov.

TRAIL END STATE HISTORIC SITE — From its authentically furnished rooms to lush grounds, the Trail End is a snapshot of Wyoming’s history. Construction on the building itself began in 1908 and was finished in 1913. It was home to the family of John B. Kendrick, former Wyoming governor and U.S. senator. After standing empty for several years, the building was about to be torn down. But in 1968, the Sheridan County Historical Society purchased the building. In 1982, the facility was turned over to the state. Now, visitors can get a glimpse of life in Sheridan between 1913-1933. For more information, see trailend.com.
