A Pivotal Masterplan Idea: “Expand the Garden Experience” The Sherman Library & Gardens has been deeply rooted in Orange County for over a half a century, serving community as a sanctuary and an educational beacon for history, horticulture and art. The New Masterplan of the beloved site is expanding its garden experience with an innovative concept: Leveraging the site’s existing topography to relocate surface-level parking to a semi-subterranean space, thereby creating an opportunity for the expansion of the focal point and heart of the campus: the garden.

Founded in 1966 by Arnold Haskell, and named from his friend and mentor, Moses Hazeltine Sherman, this iconic institution serves as a guardian of regional history and artifacts, a living library of plants both native and exotic, and a conservator of artistic works influenced by and produced in the Pacific Southwest. The strategic decision to expand the garden without expanding the site’s footprint will increase offerings while maintaining the scale, character and experience the gardens has offered for decades.

The mission of Sherman Library & Gardens is to provide inspiration, education, and appreciation of regional history, horticulture, and the arts for all. Creating a Better Future for Our Community The New Masterplan incorporates many resilient strategies for the increased sustainability. These strategies will be incorporated for not only the reduced impacts of the site on the climate, but also as an educational and storytelling opportunity within the community. Visitors and members will be able to understand how these methods are incorporated, benefits that they have, and understand how they might be able to incorporate into their personal households. These include: adaptive reuse of existing buildings to new purposes, timber construction of new buildings, adobe structures, passive ventilation and operable windows, rainwater storage tank, PV panels, charge stations, recycling, use of existing materials as well as local materials and fabrication, among many.
