The Shopping Maven The Premier Shopping Guide for the Savvy Jewish Consumer Publisher’s Letter

f you’ve ever had the pleasure of watching a baby develop in its first year of life, you know the miraculous transformation in advancements that occur, and the many milestones that are reached. For example, before an infant turns one, he or she is building a foundation for support and growth, is able to hold its own head up, track objects around him or her, sit, stand, crawl, smile and laugh, begin speaking, and take those precious first steps into next stages of life. Within our first year, here at The Shopping Maven, you could say, we have reached similar milestones. Additionally, our team has taken special care to help our beloved magazine develop into its own right, as we hold it near and dear to our hearts … We started in infancy, one year ago, building our foundation towards growth. We held our heads up through any challenges; we kept on track with everything relevant that interests you, our Community; we learned to sit back, stand tall, and crawl before we walked; there has certainly been a lot of smiling and laughing; and we are using our strong voice (and giving one to our many businesses and organizations we work with), as we take each step towards the next phase of life. Now we’re a walking, talking machine, standing proud in our distinctive and unique position, and ready to begin Year 2 of our publication, with great plans ahead. This edition, we celebrate a special and meaningful anniversary to us all here at The Shopping Maven. It has been an incredible Team effort, taking us from day one, as a brand new publication, to now, one that the Community embraces as a staple in their homes. Our mission is to ensure that you always have exciting, exclusive deals at your favorite local hot spots, as well as spectacular feature content that is interesting, relevant, and enjoyable. We are extraordinarily grateful to our many readers – 40,000+ in our local surrounding Community – and all of those who interact with us, helping to make and shape who we have already become, and direct us towards where we are headed. We love having such a flourishing Community around us with so much fervor, and it is with that in mind that we create each exciting new edition. Our Special Anniversary issue is no different, capturing interesting stories like that of the mega-famous musician Lipa Schmeltzer, who inspires a nation, created a path, and built his own empire. Read about locally grown Club Fit and their transformation, as they celebrate 30 years strong, in this Community. This distinctive issue features the tremendous services of Project Ezrah, which plays a major role in keeping the community stable, by helping those in need; also, catch a rousing D’var Torah by ‘Hollywood Rabbi’ Benzion Klatzko, founder of Shabbat.com, and Kiruv expert both locally and nationally. Further, feast your eyes on some of the best Pesach Programs in the area with dozens of destination options, all organized in our easyto-read guide. As you’ll recognize from previous issues, we also have our much-loved regular features that are naturally… anything but regular: • Dear Rebbe, hosted this time by South of Cedar’s Congregation Arzei Darom’s Rabbi Aharon Ciment • Charlie Harary who explores the entrepreneurial spirit and the quest for success! • Wonderful Recipes to keep your Winter Warm, featuring Our Ever Popular Chefs: Jeanette Friedman and Eitan Bernath • Health and Wellness column by Teaneck’s Beloved Rebbetzin Taubes • Our Local Meet and Greet – Get Kozy with the inside scoop on Kozy Kitchens • Our spectacular, Kids Korner, bursting with fun including: Tons of Famous Abba games, Two Tu B’Shevat craft projects, our Hidden Pictures puzzle – And Bonus Contest!!!!;) • Our uber-exciting New TSM exclusive Anniversary Contest –Win our Amazing Mystery $300 Prize Package! • Our stunning, unique and uplifting D’v “ART” Torah, by local artist Natalia Kadish • Our convenient back page with Shabbos Times/Parsha of the week This edition, we are also proud to announce that we have launched a new feature column - Ask the Expert – here you’ll learn about different industries, from experienced professionals who share their wisdom with us. This current issue presents, the Center for Spinal Disorders, shedding light on treating neck and back pain. Whew! So, enjoy our abundance of thoughtprovoking editorials, and of course, never miss out on all of our exclusive, incredible deals, discounts, and incentives which we have dispersed throughout these pages, from our top-notch business community, including a hot off the press Super Bowl package to Salivate over by SMOKEY JOE’s! Last but certainly not least, we’d like to personally thank our Design Team, Sales and Marketing Team, Writing and Editing Team, and Operations/Management Team for their extraordinary talents, creativity, passion and dedication to our mission. We are a unifying cause - and therefore nothing, without the great energetic force of people behind it, who are all passionately devoted to this endeavor, not dissimilar to our cohesive Community, while we make the effort to create this publication that is committed to serving you. As The Shopping Maven celebrates our exhilarating anniversary, and the start to our exciting New Year, we wish you all lots of success while entering the extraordinary 2016 New Year! We hope you take advantage of each amazing page in this issue, as you help support our abundant local infrastructure consisting of businesses of whom we are so grateful, as they work endlessly, catering to us all. Offering Helping Hands By Helen Weiss Pincus

T

he economy is defined as the production, distribution or trade, and consumption of goods and services. However, with this unpredictable social science, a bit of pixie dust is also one of the ingredients. The financial ups and downs of the last decade have created a stressful economic environment. Job security is being outsourced. Trying to balance a budget, while dealing with fluctuating interest rates, a roller coaster stock market, and increasingly bewildering technological advances, causes anxiety and tension. Sometimes, pixie dust seems to have a larger than anticipated effect. The nonprofit organization, ‘Project Ezrah’, now celebrating 14 years of extending a helping hand to Bergen County residents, consolidates many resources into a supportive network to soothe economy-related stress and help people attain financial stability. Founded in the fall of 2001 to deal with a growing unemployment crisis in the Teaneck community, the idea began to coalesce during a Daf Yomi session. A member of the study group confided to Rabbi Yossie Stern, z”l, (may his neshama be exalted), that he had a family of six, and was about to lose his health insurance. Distressed by the man’s plight, Rabbi Stern mentioned the situation to a friend, who informed him that the com-

munity’s needs were much greater than those of this one person. After dealing with the health insurance problem, Rabbi Stern began to formulate a plan which eventually became Project Ezrah. Today the organization’s holistic, multifaceted approach to lending support at a vulnerable and difficult time, makes a significant difference in the lives of many Bergen County families and residents including, the elderly and singles. The organization’s brochure states that financial advisors and social workers “evaluate each family’s needs, strengths, weaknesses and dynamics as well as their financial health, management and budgeting skills.”

12 | The Shopping MaveN–January/February 2016

“Unfortunately, there are some very tragic stories in our community,” states Robert Hoenig, executive director of Project Ezrah since October, 2014, “We put together the best plan possible to help people. When we are able to help someone find a job, that is very gratifying. Our goal is to help people attain financial self-sufficiency, which is attainable by the majority of our clients.” Hoenig comes to the job with experience in hospital administration and years of community involvement. A community supported institution, Project Ezrah is fueled by donations and several fundraising events, including the gala dinner celebrated last December at Congregation Ahavat Torah in Englewood. Working with Project Ezrah since its inception, Susan Alpert, director of fundraising and development, says the job is extremely rewarding, but not without angst. She says, “Some stories really pull at our heartstrings. But when we see our clients succeeding, it’s like a bright light at the end of a tunnel. How many jobs are there, where you are privileged to see such a bright light? It’s like that for everyone here. That’s what keeps each one of us coming in early every day. The benefits strengthening our community and Klal Yisrael are greater than what we put in.”

Along with many other issues, therapists and social workers help clients get through finance related relationship strain. “When there is nothing to eat, love (sometimes) goes out the window,” Susan says. “And sometimes the blame game - ‘you didn’t make enough money, ’ becomes the paramount family interaction.” A great number of community professionals, including mental health practitioners, lawyers, doctors, dentists, and accountants, help Project Ezrah’s clients pro-bono or at very reduced rates. The organization’s accomplishments are only possible, Susan notes, because of generous community support. “We are only the shilichim,” Susan says. “Every person who sends in a donation; from one dollar to $10,000, is part of our success.” Another fundraiser, a very timely one, as Purim approaches, is the Project Ezrah Mishloach Manot campaign, which offers a very different approach to the giddy overboard excess of the holiday’s classic gifts to friends. Each is a small packet with just two very appealing items – very attractively presented. “The families we serve are struggling,” says Susan. She continues, “We like to emphasize that one can be yoetse a mitzvah without going overboard. When a person sends an elaborate mishloach manot to someone who cannot possibly afford an equally elaborate gift, there is financial pressure on the recipient. Our ‘Purim Packets’ allow for that sensitivity and bring the exchange of Purim gifts back to a nice, fun mitzvah and not a financial obligation that can become a burden.”

“Today the organization’s holistic, multifaceted approach to lending support at a vulnerable and difficult time, makes a significant difference in the lives of many Bergen County families” “We like to show that you can be tznius and still perform a mitzvah,” says Susan. In the spirit of setting a good example, the small gifts are assembled at the Ben Porat Yosef Yeshiva Day School in Paramus - by students from the school. “The first year, we sold maybe a thousand; And now we are up to around 10,000!

TO ADVERTISE: INFO@THESHOPPINGMAVEN.ORG or 973-658-MAVE

The greater part of the purchase price goes as a gift to the poor,” says Susan. The double mitzvah is noted in a card that comes along discreetly with the elegant package. The card reads a profound message, and states, “We applaud the family who has chosen to present this modest shuloach manot.” This project has garnered a wide ranging audience, Susan notes. “People from California and Israel send orders for delivery to friends in Bergen County.” For further information on ordering Purim Packets, please email Purim@ezrah.org or call the office: 201.569.9047.

Business Focus

Club Fit – 30 Years Strong By The Shopping Maven Team

W

hen you first meet Dave Kaminsky, owner of Club Fit NJ, you know he’s in the right profession. Built like he was born with a six-pack, friendly and outgoing with his staff and members who are as loyal to him as they are about hitting the gym, and passionate about providing the community with healthy lifestyle choices. This guy looks the part and he plays it well – It’s refreshing to talk to a business owner who not only loves what he does, but also believes in the impact his business has on his customers, the same way this lifestyle had an impact on his life. When Kaminsky opened up his fitness center along Water Street (a current landmark, which was practically unknown at the time) in Teaneck 30 years ago to date, he was overweight and had no business experience. Now, Water Street is famous for his booming mega-complex that boasts over 2,500 members with almost 70 weekly classes and multiple workout rooms that contain every type of exercise machine imaginable. A former Facilities Manager at Lincoln Center, Kaminsky started, as many young entrepreneurs do, with a dream. “I had $10,000 and was choosing between buying a condo and opening up a gym,” Dave recalls. “For the first 5 years in business, I didn’t even have a treadmill – just weights.” He winks at one of his long-time trainers, John Randolph, who works alongside other long-time trainers in the Team Kaminsky has built, including Bert Fromberg and Jodi Mead. Randolph joined Kaminsky’s team back in 1994 “The industry when fitness classes were first becoming big among gyms nationwide. “Zumba became this megachanged to be less about phenomenon around 2001 – Everyone wanted to be body building, and more a part of it! It’s ageless and can be done by anyone regardless of your body shape,” Randolph says. about getting lean, fit, Over the next 30 years, Club Fit NJ, would experience growth beyond its owner’s original dreams, and enjoying a better adding abundant classes, Personal Training, and more quality of life” efficient gym space. At the same time, the industry changed to be less about body building, and more about getting lean, fit, and enjoying a better quality of life. With that, came change in the company’s name – What started as Training Grounds (“women didn’t want to come,” Kaminsky points out), evolved to Body Shapers (“Too feminine,” he chuckles), and finally to its current name which is to the community as Goldilocks’ ‘Just Right’ palate –the perfect mix of components to welcome the masses, as he truly caters to all. Club Fit is clearly more than just a place to work out; it’s a place to transform yourself into a healthier being. Point in case, Randolph started working out a while back to get in shape, but it was being in shape that kept him alive when he had a heart attack 4 years ago. As he’ll tell you, “If you’re in great shape, you have a better chance of surviving illness and living a longer, better quality of life. That’s reason enough for anyone to get started in some sort of workout regimen.” Perhaps most interesting about this place, is what separates it from the many other gyms in the area. Kaminsky runs a tight ship, but for him it’s all about customer service. He ensures everyone who uses his facilities is happy to be there and, on a number of occasions, he has helped people who have lost their jobs keep their memberships at no cost until they are back on their feet. “It’s rewarding to see people changing their lives,” he comments, and he means it. Moreover, this gym has become family to its staff and many members, offering an assortment of options to its variety of clientele, mirroring the diverse community that surrounds it. Club Fit has seen the likes of Rick James and Bill Parcels walk through its doors to use its facility – but, this local institution is best known for the inviting environment it provides to its members. “There is a real feeling of community here,” Randolph adds, “you just feel like you belong. It’s a place where everybody knows your name.”

Club Fit NJ is offering a 30th Anniversary Special with mention of this article: Change your life and sign up for membership by 2/29/16 and get your first month free and a 2nd membership free, which includes a free Personal Training session, and access to all of its renowned classes. 26 | The Shopping MaveN–January/February 2016

Local Meet and Greet with

GET KOZY

By Larry Bernstein

S

ome people are born knowing what they want to do with their lives. The rest of us figure it out as we go along. Put Aaron Lapp, the owner of Kozy Kitchens, in the latter category. However, once this hard working entrepreneur figured out what he wanted to do, he never looked back. Raised in Brooklyn, Aaron was one of seven children in his family. He describes his beginnings as humble. These humble beginnings encouraged Aaron to learn the value of hard work at a young age. By the time he and his siblings were teenagers, they knew, “Anything we wanted, we had to get on our own.” So, he hustled and took any job he could get. “I had every job you can think of,” said Aaron. His past jobs ran the gamut, from driving trucks, to selling cell phone parts. Aaron’s work ethic would serve him well when times were tough. With only weeks to go until his wedding, he had a job lined up at a publishing company. The future was bright. Then, he got a call that would change the trajectory of his life. The promised publishing job offer was rescinded and instead was given away to a relative. Many might feel devastated by the news. Aaron simply felt determined, “I had to get a job, I had to work, and I had to pay the rent.” He put the word out that he was looking for a job and, so it goes, he ‘found somebody who knew somebody’. The employer was a kitchen place, and the job was to be a kitchen installer. At that point, Aaron had no experience installing kitchens. They gave him one week to follow someone around and learn how to do the job. By week two, he was given his own tools and was sent out to jobs on his own. “I’m handy, and I know how to work with tools. So, I knew enough to start.” When he got into tricky or unfamiliar situations, “I had to figure it out on my own or ask someone with more experience.” Over the years, he learned and added to his repertoire of skills. With his expanding knowledge and strong work ethic, Aaron decided to start a kitchen business on his own, and in 2007, Kozy Kitchens was born. The entrepreneur had a clear vision of what he wanted for his business: Kozy Kitchens would be a boutique shop

TO ADVERTISE: INFO@THESHOPPINGMAVEN.ORG or 973-658-MAVE

(rather than a warehouse). The shop has room for one customer at a time. Aaron’s goal is to, “focus all my attention on one customer.” He feels his customers deserve and appreciate personalized service. As it turns out, the decision to be a boutique shop has other benefits too. His shop works well in a small space, which means less rent and lower overhead costs. This decision proved to be prescient, and was the key in allowing Kozy Kitchens to survive the difficult economic climate in 2007-2008. “I was able to get past the recession and mortgage crisis because I had limited expenses.” Just as importantly, customers appreciated the personalized service and attention they were always given, and Kozy Kitchens’ reputation spread. Today, 95% of Kozy Kitchens’ customers are referral-based, according to Aaron. When new customers ask for a reference, Aaron gives them a sheet, with a list of 25 people. “My former customers are like my salespeople – past clients sell my jobs for me.” Aaron’s direct cell phone number is on his business card, and he gets back to his customers quickly. He knows the process can be stressful for clients, and he strives to make it as easy, and as stress-free as possible. Aaron notes that one of the biggest challenges customers have is deciding on color and style. While some may view such decisions as trivial, Aaron understands why the decision can be challenging. “It’s a costly process, and a big decision that you have to live with.” Aaron offers his two cents, and tries to steer his customers in a way that he thinks will look nice, while meeting their personal style, needs and budget. However, he is sensitive, and recognizes that ultimately, it is the customers’ decision. This sensitivity is part of what helps Aaron have a good working relationship with his customers. “We’re not working together for just a couple of days. It can be up to six months.” Whether you use Kozy Kitchens to design and install an entire new kitchen, or just some new cabinets, you can be rest assured that owner Aaron Lapp will give you personalized attention and work hard for you, until you are completely satisfied. www.larrydbernstein.com

Monday and Thursday (Sheni/Chamishi), on the days that the Torah is read and Tachanun said, he sends out a 60-second podcast of inspirational Torah. It’s all about the positive, as he rapped ‘Poh Poh Pohzitiv’ and against the ‘Neh Neh Negative’ in the beis medrash back home, after an amazing day at the White House. But the path Lipa is on is not an easy one. He walks a tightrope, and perhaps suffers from what Prof. Henry Feingold, an American-Jewish historian, calls “The Shpalt.” Many of us from his generation might feel they can relate. It happens when you live with one foot in 17th century Poland and the other in the global, digital 21st. The challenge is balancing old world traditions with life in the modern world. He is grateful to his wife and four children who stuck with him through it all. Shulem bayis has never been better. His sons go to local schools, and his daughter goes to Breuer’s in Washington Heights. He is determined to see his children earn their college degrees and, if they would like, pursue their Masters.

“I’m still close to my family,” he says. “My father wanted me to be a kollel boy. Well, I found my kollel, and for the moment, it’s Columbia!” And then? “Vayter en shas…we learn some more Torah with music and heart.” youtube/EsxB2P9m5cQ

Tu B’Shevat Table Trinket

Seed Mosaic Napkin Rings Make a seed mosaic around toilet paper tubes to create these earthy and charming napkin rings that are perfect for a Thanksgiving or garden table setting.

1. Cut a toilet paper tube into three sections, with each section about 1.5 inches wide. 2. Each paper tube section will be the base for your napkin ring. Paint each one with a background color. 3. Prepare various seeds, grains, beans and spices. 4. Apply a thick layer of white glue or tacky glue on a small area of the napkin ring base. Tacky glue is a thicker variety of white glue and bonds things quicker than white glue. 5. Sprinkle seeds onto the glue.

www.firstpallet.com

Materials

• A variety of seeds, beans and spices • Toilet paper tubes • White glue or tacky glue • Craft knife • Poster paint or acrylic paint • Paint brush

Safety Tips

• Watch out for the sign . It means adult help is needed for that particular step.

6. Work on a section at a time. If you’re using white glue, you may need to let each section set before moving on to the next. Tacky glue will bond the seeds more readily. 7. Continue until you have covered the entire surface of the napkin ring. Here are some notes and ideas for your mosaic design: a.) Doing simple geometric designs like stripes or triangles are the most doable for younger kids because it allows them to just sprinkle on the seeds.

b.) An even more spontaneous option would be to have kids mix 2 or more types of seeds on a tray. After applying a thick layer of glue on the napkin ring, let them sprinkle, spoon on some seeds or roll the napkin ring onto the tray full of seeds. c.) Try out a more intricate design by carefully lining up the seeds rather than sprinkling them onto the napkin ring. The design on this napkin ring is a combination of both. The edges and the middle section were lined with seeds and the remaining areas were sprinkled over with grains. d.) You don’t always have to do a full mosaic. The background can be a charming and integral part of your design. 8. Allow your finished napkin rings to dry completely. 9. If you’re concerned about the seeds coming off, you can seal in the seeds by covering the surface of the napkin ring with a thick layer of white glue. Squeeze on a glob of glue and spread it with a paint brush, covering even the spaces between the seeds. 10. White glue and tacky glue will dry clear. These beautiful seed mosaic napkin rings are perfect for a Thanksgiving or garden table setting.

T

his issue is the one year anniversary of The Shopping Maven! I am so happy for the whole Shopping Maven Team! The magazine has had tremendous growth, and I am so proud to be part of it. Winter is here, which means snow is on its way. I don’t know about you, but my favorite part of the winter, (other than sledding in the snow) are snow days home from school. There is nothing like getting that email from Yavneh stating that there is no school due to snowfall. Most kids look forward to a long day of playing video games, and/or playing outside with the snow, but not me. A snow day to me means a whole day to cook! What else would I do stuck at home? First thing’s first… I like to start the day off with a nice big breakfast. Whether it’s pancakes, waffles, or even just an omelet, it is better than the usual cold cereal I hurriedly eat, as I run to the bus. Also, when we have a snow day, my brother, Yoni, is home and can help me cook in the kitchen. For this anniversary issue, I wanted to share with you guys one of my favorite recipes for a snow day breakfast. This french toast recipe is a little

different from what you are probably used to. The bread is dipped into cinnamon and sugar, after soaking in the egg mixture. Afterwards, you cook it in a pan with a ton of butter, which caramelizes the outside. This results in a french toast stick that is crunchy and gooey on the outside, and soft in the inside. It is pretty addictive! For more of my recipes, go to my blog cookwithchefeitan.com, which got a whole new make-over. Subscribe to my blog to get notifications of my weekly postings. Happy snow days and happy cooking, my Shopping Maven readers! Thanks,

french toast dippers with maple yogurt By Chef Eitan Bernath ingredients: • 1 cup whole milk (or halfand-half) • 3 large eggs • 2 tablespoons honey • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1/4 teaspoon salt • 8 (1/2-inch) slices day-old challah bread • 4 tablespoons butter • 1/4 cup sugar • 2 tablespoons cinnamon Maple Yogurt Dip: • 2 TBSP maple syrup • 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt • 1/8 tsp vanilla extract directions:

Preheat oven to 375°F. In a medium size bowl, whisk together the half-and-half (or milk), eggs, honey, and salt. Cut bread into strips. Dip bread into mixture, allowing

it to soak for 30 seconds on each side, and then remove to a cooling rack that is sitting in a sheet pan, and let it sit for 1 to 2 minutes. Next, dip the egg coated bread sticks into a cinnamon and sugar mixture, toss to coat. Over medium-low heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter in a 10-inch nonstick saute pan. Place 2 slices of bread at a time into the pan and cook until golden brown, approximately 2 to 3 minutes per side. Remove from pan, and place on rack in oven for 5 minutes. Repeat with all 8 slices. For Maple Yogurt: Whisk together all ingredients in a small bowl. Refrigerate until serving. Recipe and photo by Eitan Bernath

Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow! By Jeanette Friedman/photos by Jeanette Friedman

J

eanette Friedman has been a Political and Social Activist since 8th grade, and a journalist since freshman year of college. Jeanette dappled with TV as a guest panelist on everything from “People are Talking” to “The Taste” and “The Chew”. She authored “Why Should I Care” with David Gold, and worked for “Tiger Beat” and “Right On!”. She also had a stint as a disco diva! Friedman currently lives contentedly in a log cabin in the mountains with wild life for company.

This winter my energy bill is half of what it was last year at this time! But not to worry, the days are getting colder, and there are days we can smell snow in the air, and wait with trepidation—and maybe a little glee—for that first Snow Day. When Jack Frost comes nippin’ at your kid’s noses, kids who are all bundled up outside, shoveling, salting, making snow people and snow angels, building snow forts and having snowball fights, or going ice skating, they will be counting on you to thaw them out when the fun is done! They will come pouring through the door, with icy blasts of wind following them into the kitchen, where the magic scents of a warming snack will make their mouths water with anticipation, and their hands yearn to embrace a hot cup of cocoa or soup that fills their nostrils with delicious smelling steam, a foretaste of what is to come. Herewith two sets of treats—one Dairy (Milchig) and one Meat (Fleishig)—for you to choose from. Of course, you don’t have to wait for a snowy day to make these happen. Hat tip to granddaughter Batya Weisinger (aspiring 7-year-old chef) for the inspiration.

FLUFFY PEANUT BUTTER & JELLY FRENCH TOAST SANWICHES, AND AZTEC COCOA

(based on a recipe from Allrecipes.com)

These are French-toasted challah sandwiches made with classic peanut butter and grape jelly…or…Marshmallow Fluff and peanut butter…or Nutella and peanut butter…or all three. You can also invent your own favorite fillings for a fluffy French toast sandwich and class them up with fancy apricot or currant jams with goat cheese, or Nutella and raspberry jam—you get the idea. For the sandwiches: choose a loaf of bread or a challah—enough for six to eight sandwiches. If you use challah, cut slices about ¼in thick or use your favorite white or whole wheat bread. Pick your favorite fillings and make sandwiches as you normally would, peanut butter on one side, jelly on the other and then drench each sandwich in the egg dip, about half a minute on each side. You don’t want them to get too soggy. Then pop them on a greased griddle or into a large greased skillet and toast until golden brown on both sides. Serve hot. You can dust with powdered sugar, if you like.

The Egg Dip

• ¼ cup flour • 1 cup of whole milk or half and half • a pinch of salt • 3 eggs • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1 tablespoon of sugar Put the flour in a large bowl. Whisk the eggs and milk in another bowl and slowly mix them into the flour with the rest of the ingredients. Once mixed, you can use an immersion blender, on low, to make sure there are no lumps. Dip the sandwiches into this mix. There should be enough mix to soak 8 sandwiches.

• 4 cups of whole milk • 2 tablespoons corn starch • 2 tablespoons of sugar • 3 tablespoons of Dutch processed cocoa • 1 large bar of your favorite dark chocolate, chopped to melt easily (a little bit over 5 oz.) • 1 teaspoon of cinnamon • ¼ teaspoon of chipotle pepper powder, more if you really like it hot • a pinch of sea salt • whipped cream • cinnamon sticks • chocolate sprinkles

Heat the milk to a simmer in a large saucepan over medium heat. Make a roue out of the starch and milk by mixing a bit of milk into the starch to make a smooth paste, and then thin it out with more warm milk and pour the roue, stirring constantly, into the pot. The smoother the paste, the better, so you avoid lumps. Once that’s done, add everything else into the pot, and stir constantly as the hot cocoa comes to a boil and thickens, about 5-8 minutes. Once it’s hot, you can use the immersion blender on low to get rid of any lumps you might have missed. Ladle the hot cocoa into mugs, top with whipped cream, a cinnamon stick and chocolate sprinkles, and serve with your Fluffy PB&J French Toast. It will warm the cockles of the coldest hearts.

THE MEAT TREAT SMOKEY SPLIT PEA SOUP, SALAMI SANDWICHES, SLIDERS OR A HOT DOG BAR After digging out the car, especially on a day when football is on the tube, here’s a perfect mini-meal or satisfying snack that takes it up a few degrees. (This recipe can be made pareve by substituting pareve soup base and vegetable stock, using smoked soy bacon or pastrami for flavor and leaving out the diced chicken or turkey.) • 1 lb. bag of split peas • 2- 10 oz. cans of peas • 2 quarts of water • 1 quart of chicken or other stock • 2 heaping tablespoons of the Osem soup base of your choice. You can add more to taste. • 1 pkg. of Jack’s Facon (available at Glatt Express and other local stores) diced (or smoked soy product) • 2 cups of diced leftover chicken or turkey, optional • 1 tsp. of oregano • 2 bay leaves (remove before serving) • 4 cloves of garlic, finely chopped • 1 cup of chopped celery • 1 cup of sliced carrots • (makes a gallon or so) Put everything in a large pot and bring to a boil, stirring to blend the ingredients. Lower to a simmer, and simmer uncovered for three and a half to four hours, stirring occasionally. Soup should thicken. You may want to serve it the day after you make it, because then it tastes even better, nice and thick!!! Serve the steamy soup with salami sandwiches made with small dinner rolls, lettuce, tomato, mustard and mayo. OR… serve sliders… or prepare a hot dog bar— boil or broil the dogs, have the buns and fixings on hand: sauerkraut, a variety of mustards, relish, salsa, Sriracha mayo, or paprika-stewed onions, all laid out on the table so everyone can fix their dogs their way. For those who don’t want to do meat, tuna salad sandwiches can do just as well. The combo of hot split pea soup and a sandwich or hot dog is a sure winner.

The Entrepreneurial Spirit– Leaping into the Fire Charlie Harary sits down to chat with successful start-up business owner John Lee Dumas in Unlocking Greatness 021 Retold by Elyse Hansford Fhima

Charlie Harary

Charlie Harary digs deep into the psyche behind the driving force that paved the way for the ultra-successful start-up business owner, John Lee Dumas. Dumas created something extraordinary from an internal spark that was aflame, allowing his dreams to burst into reality. Harary and Dumas reveal the secrets to his success along his journey in an inspiring recount of how business owner John Lee Dumas literally talked his way into a Multi-Million Dollar Business.

B

eing ‘an entrepreneur’ can be a broad, vague goal with no clear steps to achieve it. It takes leadership and passion to run a successful business, but what does it take to start one? Sometimes, saying you want to be an entrepreneur is almost like saying that you don’t necessarily know what you want to be, or which way to go. Often, you end up becoming one without really meaning to, and without even realizing it. So… how does it all happen? What if you’re not especially good at… anything? What if everything you try ends up in failure, misery, or perhaps both? What if you stumble into a job or industry in your twenties and you just stick with it for life? … In truth, that’s often how the story goes for most people. Although, at times people can get stuck in jobs that don’t inspire them, but can’t find the way out. Others can’t find their passion or are defeated after too many failed ventures. So, how do you break free, figuring out how to do what you like and get rich while doing it? Charlie Harary chats with John Lee Dumas, the founder and host of ‘Entrepreneurs On Fire’, an award-winning Podcast Series, who shares the stories of today’s most inspiring entrepreneurs. In his unprecedented seven-day a week podcast, Dumas takes his listeners on an exciting journey while sharing tips, and dropping nuggets of practical information, via charting multiple courses to success - one recording at a time. But, when Charlie Harary and Dumas sit down together and talk, Harary finds out - what about his own journey? How did Dumas make his way there? “When I got started in real estate in 2008-2009, it was a disaster, but I got into it anyway, and that’s where I got my chops,” said Dumas. After serving an honorable eight-year military career, he landed a job in the real estate sector, but the market was on its way to crashing. “I realized the normal stuff is just not working, and I realized I’ve got to start thinking outside of the box, because nothing was happening.” So, at 32, Dumas tells Harary about how he started his very first business, “I launched broker priced opinions just for

banks, evaluating buildings in San Diego County that had taken a hit, which was basically every single one in San Diego County. This gave me my first taste of what I could do, which led me to reading books on business and listening to audio books on business people; but they were expensive …So, I searched for inexpensive options which then led me to podcasts - which are free, and free is cheaper!! This is how I got my first taste of what I possibly could do… which really sparked a fire… which in turn, turned into a flame,” said Dumas Dumas divulges that he loved hearing each story, as he was addicted to the entrepreneurial spirit, yet at the time, Dumas was becoming frustrated because the podcasts were maybe once a week or twice a month, and he wanted to be listening to people’s inspirational words of wisdom every single day! While Dumas did profit from the real estate bust, he knew TO ADVERTISE: INFO@THESHOPPINGMAVEN.ORG or 973-658-MAVE

it wouldn’t last, and he needed to build a future. The stories he listened to were very impressive, and the people were fascinating, but Dumas still had not found his path, so he dug deeper. What he found was that ironically, “It was staring me in the face!” Eventually, with a little introspection and a lot of determination, Dumas dedicated himself entirely to something that, at the time, no one had ever done before! Dumas gives Harary a valuable nugget of his own success when he states, “Be that change you want to see in the world. I said to myself, ‘if you want to wake up every morning and have a new episode just waiting for you, it doesn’t exist. Why not go out and create that?’ I knew I was approaching the end of my boom in real estate, and I wanted to do something I was excited about, passionate about, and could be proud of; and frankly, that wasn’t real estate. Real estate was just a means to an end, and Podcasting was the next big leap,” Dumas said. Dumas understood the classic business formula. First, start out with a customer problem and a product that solves it. Second, work at it, and someday you’ll wake up and realize you’ve become someone who took a risk, started a business, and made money: an entrepreneur. Yet, interestingly enough, he tells Harary that he “was anything but an entrepreneur; it was something I grew into. I had to work at it,” said Dumas. “My instincts and my gut were my guides, but foremost, I had to be practical. Just because I wanted to listen to a podcast seven days a week, would there be enough of others who also

“Entrepreneurs know they are jumping out, and into the river. They know they may drown, but that they take that big leap that not everyone is able, or willing to do” wanted that? There had to be enough potential to be viable. I asked questions, went to conferences, shook hands, asked more questions, joined groups, listened, and asked. I just immersed myself in the business culture doing my research with real people; people in the field, that were looking to make themselves entrepreneurs, that were looking to be inspired. These were my avatars!” said Dumas, with a reflective and inspirational spirit. Then, one day, it all just clicked for Dumas, as his burning passions combusted into a reality. Currently, ‘Entrepreneurs On Fire’ has produced over 1,000 episodes,

TO ADVERTISE: INFO@THESHOPPINGMAVEN.ORG or 973-658-MAVE

generates over $250,000 a month in revenue, and offers a free 15-day course on ‘Podcasting’ at FreePodcastCourse.com. How did Dumas turn his drive to succeed into a lucrative multi-million dollar business? He explained to Harary that he certainly did his due diligence, and astutely picked up on what was going on around him, and “saw the trends. I trusted the direction, but, I had to take a leap of faith. At some point, all entrepreneurs have to take a leap of faith… and it worked out for me.” said Dumas. Desperately searching for a career, he instead found a hobby that he could develop into a business opportunity worth a small fortune, but Dumas reveals that he is, still, a long way away from easy street. “It’s still a grind - you have to be ready for the long haul. Before I begin my day I have a dedicated health and exercise routine to make sure I’m a finely tuned machine, ready to face an intense schedule, technical issues, tons of interviews, criticism, praise, etc.; but I always remember I chose my path,” said Dumas with pride. Within the market itself, Dumas details that keeping his podcast content fresh is simple, and much like sports. “I think of everyday like it’s game day. I gotta bring it all! I have to take off the Super Bowl ring, and put on the jersey… I’ve got to work. I owe it to the listeners, I owe it to ‘Entrepreneurs On Fire’, I owe it to myself. This is the path I choose. If I’m not bringing the best, why am I bringing it at all?” Dumas explains further that he “had a lot of failures in the beginning, but ultimately I have a responsibility to live my life with intention. Entrepreneurs know they are jumping out, and into the river. They know they may drown, but that they take that big leap that not everyone is able, or willing to do. Darren Hardy (my mentor) and publisher of Success Magazine, told me he once got this advice: ‘Don’t miss the point. It’s not about the material, it’s not about the fame, it’s about the relationship,’ ” Dumas illucidates. John Lee Dumas’s desire to connect with others, and to learn about other individuals’ roads to achievement became a hobby, igniting a fire within. Now, after taking a big risk that wound up being worth millions of successful dollars, he is still fanning those flames. Yet, throughout, he always remembers that the key to success in life and business always comes back to the human connection he enjoyed initially, through talking, listening and learning. While he conducts his fascinating interviews with successful individuals for his Podcasts, he carries this sentiment with him, and passes along valuable words of wisdom, much like the goldmines that inspired his own successful journey to ‘Entrepreneurs On Fire’. “I Think I Can, I Think I Can – Or Can I? Beth S Taubes, RN,OCN,CBCN,Certfied Health Coach Owner/Director Wellness Wisdom LLC

W

hen you were a little child, your parents probably read you the classic children’s story, “The Little Engine that Could” written way back in 1930 by Watty Piper. I was read this story when I was a child, and I read it to my children. But, just in case you never had the opportunity to either read the story or have it read to you, or you are having a “senior moment” and can’t remember exactly what the book was about, I will share with you the abridged version of the story. A large train has a cargo of toys and goodies that must be brought to the other side of a mountain to the children who live there. The engine breaks down, and the other engines that pass the broken train are unwilling to help move the train for various reasons. Finally, a small engine, unsure if it has the strength to do it, succeeds against the odds, in pulling the train over the mountain while repeating its motto: I think I can, I think I can. (Trust me the story is a classic, and the book is much better than the movie!) The moral of the story is that if you put your mind to a task, you work very hard, and you believe in yourself, then you will be triumphant and ultimately succeed. Most of us were told this message over and over again, in one form or another, as children, and we believed it. We could grow wings and fly if we wanted to, we could swim, play ball, jump off the diving board, and sled down a big hill on a snowy day. We were usually not terribly afraid of failing or falling down, of making new friends, or of trying new things - well maybe not all new things; even as babies we weren’t always willing to eat that green stuff out of the baby food jar, but that was the exception. Then, however, something happened. Sometime in elementary school, we start developing self-doubt: “I can’t draw, I am not good at math, I can’t run fast; I can’t, I can’t, I can’t.” This ”I can’t” message which we start to feel as older children often continues to haunt us through adolescence and into adulthood.

Many of the things that we feel we “can’t” do, we just avoid altogether, and it does not pose a significant problem. For instance, I personally cannot draw if my life depended on it, but this is not a problem because I decided not to go to art school and the need to draw simply does not come up often in the adult life which I have fashioned for myself. (On the rare occasion where it may, I just call one of my daughters who was a studio art major - I went through labor and delivery, managed to get her through school, fed and clothed her, and I occasionally babysit for her children, so she can draw for me if I need her to). Nonetheless, there are many situations in our lives where the feeling that “I can’t” does, in fact, get in the way and hampers things such as, our personal life and health goals. In my current role as a nurse and health coach, I have the exciting opportunity to coach/guide people, and help them make healthy life choices. When I meet with my clients for the first time, I often hear one or more of the following: “I can’t give up cake, or diet soda, or pizza, or ice-cream (that one I can really relate to), or chulent, or kugel, or challah or bagels. I can’t get to bed early, I can’t get out of bed early, I can’t eat breakfast, I can’t drink water, I can’t give up smoking, I can’t walk because my knees hurt, I can’t exercise because my back hurts, I can’t run because I get short of breath, I can’t do yoga because I am not flexible, I can’t meditate because I don’t have the patience, I can’t get together with friends, I can’t ________________ (fill in your own I can’t).” We are filled with so many “I cant’s” that we believe that we don’t have the ability to change. I am not minimizing the fact that changing a life habit can be very difficult and challenging, but in order to make a change one must believe that it is possible. The first step towards wanting to change a health habit is to identify the health habit that you would like to change, and determine how this is habit affecting you. For instance, if you acknowledge that you are addicted to sugar, think about how the sugar is affecting you. Do you feel fatigued in the middle of the day? Are your pants too tight on the waist? We all know that movement and exercise are extremely important to overall health and yet most of us move very little. The average person in America is in bed for approximately 7 hours; let’s add one hour of television or computer time prior to sleeping (I am not advocating either for people who suffer from insomnia; that will be the topic of another article), another hour for bathing, showering, and various morning and evening rituals, and one more for eating, and the average “up and about” time is 91 hours per week. Now calculate: how many of those hours are spent sitting? standing? moving? How can you add more movement into your day? When you wake up tomorrow morning, think about one good health habit which you would like to take on or one negative habit that you would like to give up. Start the day by looking in the mirror and telling yourself “I know I can, I know I can” - just make sure no one is watching you! Wishing you all a 2016 filled with good health and a lot of “I can’s”. If you need help finding your “I can,” please reach out to me for guidance and coaching.

“In order to make a change one must believe that it is possible”

Has the Time for Outreach Come and Gone? By Rabbi Benzion Klatzko

R

He is an adjunct professor at Yeshiva University and lectures at over 70 different North American colleges and universities. He is the conceptual founder of Shabbat.com, and involved with Morasha Olami, focusing on Jewish identity. Rabbi Klatzko is also a successful author, radio talk show host (97.5FM), cantor, music producer, mohel, and the founder of Simcha Art Gallery. A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Rabbi Klatzko received his rabbinic ordination from the prestigious Mir Yeshiva in Brooklyn, NY. He served as Rabbi of the Agudath Israel synagogue of Brooklyn, NY, and at the helm of another congregation in Perth Amboy, NJ. KIRUV. OUTREACH.THE WORD CONJURES UP images of the scraggily, long haired backpacker who, after traversing the globe in search of spiritual truths, finds his life changed by a tap on the shoulder at the Western Wall. While this scenario has certainly played out countless times, it hardly reflects the scope of the outreach movement. While religious defection from Judaism has occurred throughout history, its pace has accelerated substantially over the past two hundred years. Much of this was due to the Haskala (enlightment) movement, which gave birth to alien forms of Judaism, as well as the emancipation of Europe, which helped point the way to the exit. It was not until the 1960’s, especially in the aftermath of the Six Day War, that we as a people were emboldened to start reaching out to our wayward brethren. In the mere 45 years since, we have evolved from a people struggling to survive, to one dynamically growing in confidence and numbers. Outreach has gone through significant changes in recent years. What started as a fringe movement has, in a mere forty years, become a national cause, as well as a legitimate career choice. Chabad, Aish, Neve, Ohr Somayach, NCSY, Project Inspire, Community Kollelim, Arachim, and many more, have all contributed admirably to the worldwide outreach movement. The kiruv movement has breathed life into communities near and far and infused pride and confidence in a Torah lifestyle, regardless of ideology. However, the Jewish community’s growth has introduced new challenges and exacerbated others. Marital harmony, kids at risk, job stability and the cost of raising and maintaining an Orthodox home are all serious challenges facing Orthodox Jewry today. So the question is:

has the time come to put kiruv on the back burner and focus on other issues? I recently posed this question on my weekly radio show (Hidabroot 97.5FM) and the surprising response taught me three things: • As a nation, we still believe in the validity of kiruv. • We believe that everyone can be involved in reaching out on some level. • Outreach need not be left to professionals working outside the framework of the community. Rather, our community is beginning to view it as an organic expression of its values. If kiruv is a natural response to exposure to a Torah lifestyle, why hasn’t it been more effective? Are outreach professionals failing to bring people in, or is something lacking in our Torah lifestyle that is repelling people instead of attracting them? Non-observant Jews are generally unimpressed by our lifestyle, and many are turned off by it. This is not because of outreach efforts – it is because of us. This suggestion is a scary indictment of Orthodox Jewry. Perhaps it is too harsh. But,

56 | The Shopping MaveN–January/February 2016

the question remains: What is missing? Why do we not enjoy the respect and admiration of the non-observant community? Perhaps we should explore how Torah being naturally attractive is a function of how well a Torah community reflects the true definition of what Judaism is. Historically, Judaism too often has been defined incorrectly, and the damage has been immeasurable. The Torah categorically avoids the designation religion, instead using a completely different construct: a metaphor for relationship. Judaism is a relationship. When Hashem asked the Jewish people if they want to accept the Torah, they answered, “Naaseh v’nishma,” we will do and we will listen. It is the order of the response that is the key here. In considering a religion, one first listens, hears, judges and then commits to act. A pledge of to “do” first before listening is something else entirely. When a loved one asks for a favor, the typical response is “Sure! What would you like me to do?” This reflection of trust and eagerness to please is the hallmark of a loving relationship. Hashem wants that loving relationship with us!

“Judaism is a relationship” The ramifications are tremendous. Each mitzvah morphs when seen through the eyes of relationship. Shabbos becomes romantic special time with the One we love, complete with flowers, a bottle of wine, and a candlelit dinner. We call out “Boi kallah, boi kallah” imploring our beloved bride to come and join us. B’samim (spices) during havdalah remind us of the scent of our loved one, in the same way a lover dabs her perfume on a letter she

TO ADVERTISE: INFO@THESHOPPINGMAVEN.ORG or 973-658-MAVE

is sending to her soldier on the front lines. Shmini Atzeres becomes a moving farewell to a loved one, when we echo Hashem’s words to us – “koshe alay praidaschem” (it is difficult for Me to part from you). Tefillin turn into a love locket where we engrave our allegiance to Hashem echad (one G-d) and He, wearing his celestial tefillin pledges back to us, “Umi k’amcha Yisroel goy echad ba’aretz”, there is no one like you Klal Yisroel! When one is in a meaningful relationship, it becomes a deeply personal, moving experience pervaded by happiness and a sense of bliss. The definition of Judaism as a relationship makes all the difference in the world. Unfortunately, the joy in our relationship, the catalyst to mitzvah observance, has seen its passion dulled. Perhaps this is due to the burden of exile, or its creature comforts, but for many, Torah, while meticulously observed, no longer sets their souls on fire. We need to recapture that happiness. That’s the key to a successful relationship with Hashem. Today, Carlebach minyanim are proliferating and thousands travel to Uman each year for Rosh Hashana. The Jewish people are yearning to rediscover the joy in Yiddishkeit. When a non-observant person witnesses the true happiness of Judaism, this becomes the greatest reason to give it serious consideration. But when the joy of a relationship is absent, no intellectual argument or outreach seminar will be convincing.

world. Our enslavement in Egypt taught us empathy and prepared us to deliver the message that there is a better way to treat people and that we are all created in His image. Thus, morals and values that many assume were always universally accepted norms actually originate in the Torah. We are the teachers of morality and the world is our students. Absent this understanding, Judaism devolves into slices of ritual and custom that, while obligatory and significant, bypass the overarching motive behind the Jewish people’s raison d’être. Over time our focus on this assignment has faded. We have come to see the nations of the world as a threat to be avoided, lest we learn from their ways; and we isolate ourselves, living comfortably in our own insular bubble. However, when we embrace our mission, it injects meaning into our rituals and observance, making our way of life compelling and appealing. Certainly, there is a balance that must be found between our role to be an influence and our vulnerability to being influenced, and each community must struggle to find its path. Perhaps one day I will happily be looking for other employment, but we are not there yet. We have some work to do as a nation before the product is so desirable that it attracts the unaffiliated all on its own. Meanwhile, organized kiruv is vital to this journey and gives us the opportunity to discover our divine relationship through fresh and excited eyes. When we ultimately right our ship and infuse happiness and responsibility into our Judaism, the world will take note. Positivity is contagious, and our actions will reflect a nation with a divine mandate who is joyfully changing the world for the better. Definition and mission. It’s why people will choose the Chosen People.

“We believe that everyone can be involved in reaching out on some level”

DearRebbe With Rabbi Aharon Ciment

R

abbi Aharon Ciment has been the Rabbi of Congregation Arzei Darom since 2004. Arzei Darom is a wonderful, growing Modern Orthodox Synagogue serving the South of Cedar Lane area in Teaneck, NJ. Rabbi Ciment and his family moved from Baltimore, Maryland, where he received Rabbinic ordination from Ner Israel Rabbinical College. While in Baltimore, he served as assistant to Rabbi Heinemann. Rabbi Ciment holds a Masters degree in School Administration and Supervision as well as Mental Health and Counseling. Additionally, he has received accreditation from the prestigious Ackerman Institute in New York in Couple and Family Therapy. Rabbi Ciment studied abroad in Israel at Yeshivas Ohr Yerushalayim followed by Yeshivas Bais Yisroel. He also studied in Yeshivas Ohr Chaim in Queens, New York. Currently, Rabbi Ciment is also a Rebbee and Mashgiach for the Yeshiva University’s Stone Beis Midrash Program. Rabbi Ciment is also a member of the Guidance department at the Yeshiva University High School for Boys (MTA). Rabbi Ciment is available for private sessions for adolescents, young adults, and family therapy. For this special anniversary issue of the Shopping Maven, we chose to dedicate the entire Dear Rebbe column space to a very pressing and apparent issue that arose in a heartfelt question submitted by one of our readers. At a time like this, we felt this sort of attention was appropriate to be paid to such a profound and multi-dimensional topic. We want to say thank you to all of our readers who continuously enter wonderful and meaningful questions, please keep them coming; a special thank you to the reader who was brave enough to ask such a poignant question as the one below; most of all we thank the Rabbanim who have bestowed their enlightening insight upon us throughout the year in this Dear Rebbe column.

Dear Rebbe, We love Israel but currently the media is plastered with daily tragedies, and while my son has looked forward to going to Yeshiva for the year all his life, he is now feeling some trepidation about entering his applications for school. What are your opinions on how to approach this subject with him correctly? Thank you for asking the question that is on so many people’s minds these days. It is not a simple matter. Going away to any foreign country under any circumstance can be daunting and overwhelming. Now, to compound that with the fear and trepidation of going to Israel under the current conditions can be very frightening. Therefore, it is totally understandable for your child to not want to go to Israel, or at least think twice. However, I believe this can be a wonderful opportunity to talk with your child about issues perhaps never discussed, such as Hashem’s hashgachah (watchful eye) over the world. Our children are raised with a wonderful Yeshiva education that teaches our children so much Torah, however the education that our children receive has to be so much more than facts. In today’s day, we have to teach our children about Hashem and His ways. We have to explain to our children that on Rosh Hashana we come before Hashem and He determines what is in store for us for the rest of the year. Our children have to be taught that Hashem determines how much money we make and even who lives and who dies. We have to instill in our children that wherever we are (needless to say, we must always be careful) ultimately Hashem determines our fate. Additionally, this is a wonderful opportunity to teach our children that we don’t always

understand the ways of Hashem. However, we know that just as a parent is always looking out for the welfare of a child, so too Hashem is ONLY interested in what is best for us. Our people have been persecuted and tormented for thousands of years beginning with King Pharaoh who enslaved us for 210 years with backbreaking labor, yet the Jewish people remained faithful to Hashem. The Jews during the times of the Holocaust were persecuted, yet Jews were willing to sacrifice their lives to blow shofar on Rosh Hashana and eat matzah on Pesach. Today we have different challenges that befall our people. The characters change, though the story line remains the same. By learning in Israel, it allows our children to experience and appreciate all of these values on a very deep personal level. By spending a year (at least) in Israel our children will understand the challenges that our nation faces. Ultimately, it is not my intention to persuade your child to attend yeshiva or seminary in Israel next year, however this gap year can change the trajectory of your child’s life for generations to come. Someone once came to Rabbi Yisrael Salanter and asked him “Rebbe I only have five minutes a day to learn should I learn mussar (study of refinement of character, etc.) or Gemara?” Rabbi Salanter responded “mussar, of course.” The student asked “Why?” The Rebbe responded, “if you learn mussar you will come to realize and appreciate you have more than 5 minutes a day.” I firmly believe if a person goes to our land and studies Torah like never before he/she will come to appreciate that the question to go or not to go would never be asked in the first place. Every case and situation is different. If you have any specific questions please don’t hesitate to contact me at Rabbi@arzeidarom.org.

D’v “ART” Torah by Natalia Kadish

Words of spiritual Torah inspirations extracted and expressed through heartwarming, beautiful, and one of a kind visual art.

Blessed is HaShem who tells us to bring light to dispel the darkness! In the winter, darkness of night descends on us earlier and earlier. Instead of being saddened by darkness when it falls, we have a job, an ‘Avoda’! The Avoda in life is to see the potential of warmth within the cold exterior. When there is light everything is seen so much clearer. We understand the idea that we need to look for ‘Hashgacha Prutis’ (HaShem’s Divine Guiding Hand) in our lives; by seeing (and holding on tight) to that potential of light, we hope that HaShem will bless our surroundings to be lit up clearly, in actual revealed fact. Let this concept be our pathway to a happier destination in life, for this is our Avoda! When we see the good, it becomes just that! Many Blessings to Everyone! Natalia Aura Tova
