Charlie Murphy brings his comedy to the university show BY DUSTIN DANGLI Contributor to the Shorthorn
When Stephanie Moran found her seat for Charlie Murphy’s show she was expecting a down-to-earth experience. “He keeps it real,” the sociology sophomore said. “He talks about real topics.” Rather than a relaxed discussion, Moran found herself laughing along with more than 900 audience members at Texas Hall, as comedians Freez Luv and Murphy performed their stand-up acts Thursday night. Most of the audience, like kinesiology junior Brandon Goodwin, knew about Murphy from his appearances on “Chappelle’s Show,” and weren’t sure what to expect. Goodwin said he was hoping for something like what was featured “Charlie Murphy on the show. ain’t afraid of Instead of reliving the show in his no one, but if act, Murphy told challenged to a new stories with half-naked sword hints of show references. He thanked fight, I’d bitch the show because out.” now everyone yells his name, making Charlie Murphy, :FDDLE@:8K@FE him more than comedian “Eddie Murphy’s brother.” Management junior Charles Alexander said he was satisfied with the show because he talked about the world. “I didn’t think it was going to be as funny because he was just on the show,” Alexander said. “But he talked about common sense.” Murphy’s comedy style included stories likeE\njZXjkj Xe[ jgfikj ^Xd\j the film 300 and its impact on the male ego.n`cc ile fe Z_Xee\c 00 Y\^`ee`e^ “300 will do your spirit wonders,” Murphy N\[e\j[Xp e`^_k% said. “Charlie Murphy ain’t afraid of no one, but if challenged to a half-naked sword fight, 9P D8I@JJ8 ?8CC

Women’s self-defense class to be held Saturday evening Ways to defend against an attack will be taught at the Rape Aggression Defense class 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday at Maverick Stadium for female faculty, staff and students. University police officers Randy Reynolds and Dean Peterson teach the class. Reynolds said they are trying to promote self-awareness and risk avoidance. Reynolds said that at the end of the course, the officers wear a fully padded suit and the women wear protective gear and practice combat maneuvers, so participants know what to do in a real-life situation. Reynolds said the class is restricted to about 25 women and only a few spots are open, but another class will be held at the Maverick Activities Center on Dec. 8. To participate, call 817-272-3381 or contact Reynolds at reynolds@uta.edu.

The team, 50-70 performers with the youngest at 4 years old, have performances every year. The team performed internationally in China, Hong Kong and Bermuda but work mostly at different Texas locations.
7-foot Chinese dragon will roam campus for asian Heritage Month
“We do a lot of restaurants, supermarkets, schools, universities and businesses,” Sun said. “Most of our shows are within driving distance.” The Lion Dance originated in a small Chinese village. Beasts threatened the villagers at the beginning of the Lunar New year. The people began making lion costumes from bamboo frames covered in papier-mâché to scare beasts away, according to the team’s Web site. The Dragon Dance started from the belief that dragons have power to decide when it rains. The dance was a way to beg the dragon for rain during droughts. Both dances date back to 200 B.C. in China. The lion and dragon dances mix the movement of both animals to display beauty, art, culture, traditions and Chinese history. Performers portray emotions like caution, curiosity, anger, sleepiness, confusion, happiness and sadness.

For the dragon dance, student volunteers will carry the 7-foot-long dragon body. Multicultural affairs director Leticia Martinez said none of the volunteers have practiced. International Student Organization co-hosts the event. ISO president amali Fernando said her group wanted to participate ever since they heard about it. “The Chinese dragon is what makes you automatically think of China,” she said. “It represents an entire nation and its culture. It’s not every day that students at UTa get to be a part of something like that.” aNNa katzkova news-editor.shorthorn@uta.edu

A new-found DNA process sheds light on diseases By Bryan BastiBle The Shorthorn staff
University researchers discovered something they named “Space Invader,” which could change evolutionary theory. The four researchers found that a horizontal transfer — when an element passes down between species without going through the reproduction process — has occurred in DNA among mammals, reptiles and amphibians. The newly named element of DNA was named after the Atari game and for its mysterious origin. The Space Invader is a transposon, a piece of DNA that moves from one place to another. A better understanding of this type of biology will improve the understanding of causes and cures of diseases like severe
combined immunodeficiency, porphyria and Duchenne muscular dystrophy, said Clement Gilbert, biology post doctorate fellow and one of the project’s researchers. “We and other researchers think the SPIN transposons that we have characterized in our study could potentially make good vectors for molecular biology and maybe also for gene therapy,” he said. He said the team now collaborates with Nancy L. Craig, Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator, to test these possibilities. The Space Invader — only found in a select group of mammals and vertebrates — was only found by using computer analysis, said John K. Pace II, former UTA graduate student.

areas, with $40 million going to student scholarships, $40 million to faculty recruitment and the remaining $15 million to accelerate the Campus Master Plan. Well drilling began one year ago on the southeast end of campus near the Center for Continuing Education and Workforce Development Center. Elizabeth Gasca, Carrizo Oil and Gas spokesperson, said the company has been surprised by how smoothly and quickly the process has moved from fracture stimulating in August to the well completion and production phase they’ve recently entered. “We’ve never seen a well come in as fast and strong as the site at UTA,” she said. “We’re very eager to expand operations in cooperation with the university.” University officials said the university will not comment on the report until after Spaniolo’s presentation to the Board of Regents on Wednesday.
jaweed. Luis Moreno-Ocampo, International Criminal Court prosecutor, requested a warrant to arrest Sudanese president Omar Al-Bashir in July. “Unfortunately, very few Americans are aware of what is happening in Darfur,” said history associate professor William Dulaney, who has a Ph.D. in American and African-American history. “What’s

I’d bitch out.” Murphy stood on stage impersonating almost every one including Dog The Bounty Hunter and President-elect Barack Obama in his “bizarre dream.” EXCEL Campus Activities, who hosted the event, was worried about vulgarity, but Murphy said that he cleaned it up for his college performances. “I take into account the fact that I got kids around the same age as the audience and I wouldn’t have that conversation with them,” Murphy told The Shorthorn.
“What this indicates is that the element was somehow transferred between these species, rather than being inherited from a common ancestor,” he said. ”The story is especially interesting because DNA transposable elements, unlike viruses, have no infectious capability. This makes their transfer between species more remarkable.” Biology assistant professor Cédric Feschotte designed the experiments, coordinated the project and co-authored a paper on the research. “The same transposon infiltrated the genome of a wide range of vertebrates — five mammals, one frog and one lizard — all around the same time, around 30 million years ago,” Feschotte said. “Based on paleontological records, we know that some of
these species or their direct ancestors inhabited different continents, like the Tenrec in Africa and the opossum in America.” A paper based on the Space Invader research was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA. Versions of the paper have also been featured in newspapers and online news services throughout the world. “This work has already been quite publicized not only in the United States but also in newspapers in Argentina, China and Germany,” Gilbert said. “This kind of work therefore participates in showing to other people that high quality research is done at UTA.”
happening in Darfur, like any other international tragedy anywhere, should not only be discussed, but we, as Americans, should be pressuring our government to act to end what is going on there.” Dulaney said he believes America contradicts its foreign policy by not showing sympathy to Darfur. “We have stood by with our hats in our hands and twiddling our thumbs as the genocidal war occurs in Darfur,” he said. History professor Jerry
Rodnitzky said he doesn’t believe Americans care about Darfur because of the disagreement with the Iraq War and current economic troubles. “Just as America largely ignored the Holocaust during the 1930s Depression, they are unfortunately now likely to ignore similar tragedies around the world today, which we could help by cooperating with other nations and highlighting the situation,” he said.

Murphy said that he enjoyed the crowd and didn’t have to use his material to battle any hecklers. The same couldn’t be said for opening act Freez Luv who took time to pick on a loud audience member. After humiliating the attendee, Freez Luv paused in his routine to allow other audience members to stand up, point and laugh at the heckler — which most of the audience did. Biology junior Anum Abid went home with that feeling as she chatted with her friends about the show. “I wasn’t expecting him to curse so much,” she said, “but his bluntness made him funny.”

Gay marriage defeat jars California activists LOS ANGELES — In a heartbreaking defeat for the gay-rights movement, California voters put a stop to gay marriage, creating uncertainty about the legal status of 18,000 same-sex couples who tied the knot during a four-month window of opportunity opened by the state’s highest court. Passage of a constitutional amendment against gay marriage — in a state so often at the forefront of liberal social change — elated religious conservatives who had little else to cheer about in Tuesday’s elections. Gay activists were disappointed and began looking for battlegrounds elsewhere in the back-andforth fight to allow gays to wed. “There’s something deeply wrong with putting the rights of a minority up to a majority vote,” said Evan Wolfson, a gay-rights lawyer who heads a group called Freedom to Marry. “If this were being done to almost any other minority, people would see how un-American this is.” Legal skirmishing began immediately, with gay-rights groups challenging the newly passed ban in court Wednesday and vowing to resist any effort to invalidate the same-sex marriages that took place following the state Supreme Court decision in May. — The Associated Press
Obama shows sharper tone associated Press Writer
CHiCAGo — Barack obama is signaling a shift in tactics and temperament as he moves from candidate to president-elect, picking sharp-elbowed Washington insiders for top posts. His choice Thursday for White House chief of staff — rahm emanuel, a fiery partisan who doesn’t mind breaking glass and hurting feelings — is a significant departure from the soft-spoken, low-key
aides that “No-drama obama” has surrounded himself with during his campaign. And transition chief John Podesta, like emanuel, is a former top aide to Bill Clinton and a tough partisan infighter, though less bombastic than the new chief of staff. The selections are telling for obama, who campaigned as a nontraditional, almost “post-partisan” newcomer. People close to him say the selections show that obama
is aware of his weaknesses as well as his strengths and knows what he needs to be successful as he shifts from campaigning to governing. “No one i know is better at getting things done than rahm emanuel,” obama said in a statement announcing the selection. obama, who survived a long contest with Sen. Hillary rodham Clinton for the democratic presidential nomination, also has made it clear he
will rely heavily on veterans of her husband’s eight-year administration, the only democratic presidency in the past 28 years. Podesta was President Clinton’s chief of staff, and several other former Clinton aides are on obama’s short lists for key jobs, democratic officials say. Some of them helped write a large briefing book on how to govern, assembled under Podesta’s supervision. obama himself brims with
self-confidence, to the point that some people view him as arrogant. But to a greater degree than many presidents, he appears willing to lean on Washington insiders associated with other politicians. Still, he is also certain to bring to the White House a cadre of longtime aides. emanuel accepted obama’s offer with a gesture of bipartisanship, addressing part of his statement to republicans.

Case Vermillion hands a gun to a customer at the Cheaper Than Dirt gun shop in Fort Worth, Texas, Thursday. The store recorded a record day of gun sales the day after the election of President-elect Barack Obama and is having trouble keeping up with the demand for assault riffles.
ForT WorTH, Texas — While watching republican presidential candidate John McCain’s concession speech, gun owner AJ Sullivan had a sinking feeling. “liberals like to ban guns. That’s what it comes down to,” said Sullivan, 25, a Texas Christian University student. Sullivan was among hundreds scrambling to buy a weapon Thursday at the gun store Cheaper Than dirt! — which sold $101,000 in merchandise the day after the election, shattering its singleday sales record, said store owner deWayne irwin. Stories were similar across Texas, where residents are
fiercely protective of their Second Amendment rights and now fear stricter guncontrol laws under democratic President-elect Barack obama. “There’s a mindset here of freedom, and you’ve bitten off more than you can chew if you think you can come after Texans’ guns,” said Charlissa Stokes, co-owner of Panhandle Gunslingers, an Amarillo shooting range and gun store where sales have doubled the last few days. At Houston’s Memorial Shooting Center, gun sales are up 70 percent and “the whole wall of assault rifles is gone,” said manager richard Poulis.

NeW YorK — retailers suffered through the weakest october in at least 39 years, despite frenzied price cutting as they desperately try to pull in consumers who are too worried about their finances to shop. The sales tallies from major retailers on Thursday — many showing declines of 10 percent or more — suggests that shoppers will remain skittish through the holiday season, buying presents for children but not much else. “There was every reason for consumers not to shop,” said Walter loeb, a New York-based retail consultant. “layoffs are rising, the stock market is tumbling. Consumers are feeling poorer.” one of the few bright spots was Wal-Mart Stores inc., whose results show how much frugal consumers are focusing on necessities. The world’s largest retailer also said it will cut prices on items from toys to laptops over the next seven weeks. department store J.C.Penney Co. is also offering extended hours and markdowns of up to 60 percent this weekend. The stunning and rare drop in sales last month, following an already weak September, showed the toll the financial crisis is taking on all shoppers,
from teens to the affluent, and analysts expect no recovery until at least the second half of 2009. Not even receding gas prices — their rise a cause of angst for shoppers just a few months ago — are expected to provide much relief for the holidays as
consumers fixate on shriveling retirement funds and job security amid widespread layoffs. The number of people continuing to receive jobless benefits reached its highest level in more than 25 years, according to government figures released Thursday.

iran leader offers obama congratulations the associated Press
TeHrAN, iran — iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Thursday congratulated Barack obama on his election win — the first time an iranian leader has offered such wishes to a U.S. president-elect since the 1979 islamic revolution. An analyst said Ahmadinejad’s message was a gesture from the hard-line president that he is open to some sort of reconciliation with the U.S. obama has said he is willing to hold direct diplomacy with iranian leaders as a way to break the impasse between the two countries or give the U.S. more credibility to press for tougher
sanctions if talks fail. His policy marks a departure from the Bush administration, which has refused high-level engagements with iran. Ahmadinejad congratulated the democrat on “attracting the majority of voters in the election,” according to excerpts carried by the official irNA news agency. The iranian leader also said he hopes obama will “use the opportunity to serve the (American) people and leave a good name for history” during his term in office. iran and U.S. have no formal diplomatic relations since 1979 and the hostage drama when militant iranian students held 52
Americans captive 444 days. Current U.S.-iranian relations remain tense, with Washington accusing iran of trying to develop nuclear weapons and of providing support for Shiite militants who are killing U.S. soldiers in iraq — charges iran denies. in Jerusalem, israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi livni, a contender for prime minister in her country’s elections, warned against any dialogue with iran — a first sign of israeli disagreement with the incoming U.S. administration. “dialogue at this time is liable to broadcast weakness,” cautioned livni, who is head of the governing Kadima Party.

sophomore guard Ian pierson, who led the team with 40 percent three-point shooting last year, said it would mean a lot to him and the team to win out this weekend. “Everybody’s here because of him,” he said. “If we don’t win, I’ll personally take it as a dishonor kind of thing. It would mean all that much more to win it.”

Coming into her fourth season on the women’s basketball team, senior forward Erin Dixon looks to help lead the Mavericks to a third conference championship in her career. In the Mavericks first exhibition game against the Houston Jaguars on tuesday night, Dixon recorded a double-double, scoring 11 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. Before starting practice in preparation for the team’s scrimmage versus tarleton state on saturday at 3 p.m. at texas Hall, Dixon sat down with the shorthorn and talked about her inspiration, her favorite athlete and eating pickles.
The basketball Web site collegeinsider.com released its mid-major preseason poll Tuesday. For the first time in school history, the men’s basketball team received votes in the preseason poll. The Mavericks received 36 votes, which wasn’t enough to place them inside the top 25. Conference rival Stephen F. Austin landed just outside the top 10 at No. 11. Last season the Mavs ascended to No. 14 in the polls during the week of Dec. 10, before the team’s loss to Texas Christian. Other Southland teams receiving votes were Lamar (14), Northwestern State (7) and Sam Houston State (6). The Mavs, who captured the school’s first-ever conference tournament title last season, tip off this season on Nov. 15 against Hardin Simmons at Texas Hall.
