a typical day for Judy Snyder begins hours before the break of dawn. accompanied by her children, she works part-time making hospital meal deliveries at 4 a.m. She then drops her two kids off at school, works at the architecture and Fine arts Library until noon, attends classes, picks her kids up, then heads home to cook, clean and watch half a movie with her children before getting them to bed. “I take the children with me often to the Central Library to do my homework,� Snyder said. The art freshman and single mother takes 15 hours of classes and works two part-time jobs to support her children, 13-year-old Brooke and 11-year-old Tony. “I relieve all my stress by thinking about winter break,� she said. On top of her busy schedule, Snyder also serves as president of NexT, Not EXactly Traditional students. Created in May 2007, the NexT program was founded by students raising children while attending college. The group offers programs and services to assist non-traditional students in finishing school. “It’s very hard for students who are working and raising a family to arrange their schedules,� NexT co-adviser John Macejak said. “I deal with a lot of those students on a daily basis, so it’s important to me to be a resource to them.� Snyder,49, said she married soon after graduating from high school 30 years ago. “He didn’t want me to go to college,� she said. “I was

young and thought I was being a good wife, but we are no longer married.� Snyder said her toughest week in school was when her son fractured his ankle. an essay was due the next day, but instead of spending hours in front of a computer, she waited in the emergency room with her son and daughter. “all I could think was, ‘I wish I had brought my books to study,’ � she said. “I was sleep deprived, and I felt defeated.� Public relations senior Lynda arnold also juggles a family, a job and classes throughout the day. a communications adviser and mother of three teenagers, the now part-time student arranges her classes around her family’s schedule. “My family knows when finals are coming up that I need time to study,� arnold said. “That’s when they help cook dinner.� Like Snyder, arnold also experienced a hard day when children conflicted with classes. “I had a final when my son was hit by hail during a bad storm,� she said. “The teacher was able to work with me in regards to my final.� Snyder and arnold both offer the same advice to other student parents about knowing the limits when it comes to handling stress. “I don’t see a bright future if I don’t get a degree,� Snyder said. “It’s my goal and at my age, it’s the thing I wake up for.� alaNNa QuilleN news-editor.shorthorn@uta.edu

Frat hosts talent show to bring in food for shelter “Showtime at the Apollo� meets UTA at the Alphapollo 2008 at 7 tonight in the University Center Rosebud Theatre. The talent show is hosted by the UTA chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. By Tuesday afternoon, 14 individual and group acts, ranging from singing to dancing, signed up to showcase their talent, said Emeka Onuzo, information systems and biochemistry senior. The show is judged by audience applause for performance. There is no second or third place in this winner-takesall jackpot of $250. Onuzo said in 2004 a dance group won, and singing acts have won the last two years. Admission is $2 with any canned good, or $5 without. The canned foods are donated to Mission Arlington. A summer day at the beach in Puerto Rico about 16 years ago turned tragic when Sigma Lambda Beta fraternity member Victor Correa was pulled down by an undercurrent and drowned. Correa’s life could have been saved if someone had performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation, or “CPR.” In memory of Correa, Sigma Lambda Beta members throughout the country host Victor Correa CPR Awareness Day during the week of Nov. 20 because that was the day Correa joined Sigma Lambda Beta. The university chapter decided to host the event on Nov. 19 this year. Correa was a student at Stony Brook University when he died. Funding for the program came from a $3.5 million federal grant, which covers one-third of the tuition and book costs for the 15 candidates. While similar programs exist nationally, the program is the first for the state, said Clint Bond, Fort Worth ISD external communications coordinator. “There are similar programs around the country in very large urban school

districts,” he said, like in Chicago, Boston and New York. After participants receive their degree, Bond said they will complete a year-long residency — modeled after a medical field residency — alongside school principals and school assistant principals on Fort Worth campuses. “There’s always a need for principals to understand how FWISD does its business — which is educating children,” he said.

“Oh my God,” shouted Matt Jones, Homecoming king candidate, as he dashed away from the crowd visibly shocked. Jones was the only male candidate to not make Homecoming Court. There were three spots and four candidates. The Homecoming king and queen will be announced Feb. 14 during Homecoming in Texas Hall. “It just came out of nowhere,” Jones said. He said he started campaigning a month ago and has been volunteering at events and functions, so he felt good about his chances. He said the loss wouldn’t change his extracurricular activity on campus, and he will run for Mr. UTA next semester. SC program director Kent Long won a spot on the court. Long was one of many who consoled Jones after his loss. Long said he feels good about his chances in February but right now he’s happy being one of three male court members. SC secretary Melanie Johnson, who gained candidacy for Homecoming queen, said she was worried before the results were revealed. “I didn’t want to be that one person who didn’t get it,” she said. She said she had stiff competition and doesn’t feel 100 percent she’ll win. “That whole week in February I’m going to be nervous,” she said. SC vice president Bess Alvarez said she was surprised about a few results but didn’t go into the election thinking she could predict anything. “You can never call an election,” she said. Business senator Aaron Resendez maintained his senator spot, getting the most votes in a category that would have no losers — there were the same number of candidates as empty spots.

In his reply to the governor’s request, President James Spaniolo wrote that the university would limit taxpayer-funded travel to “essential activities that support the academic mission”

of the university. “I want to assure you that The University of Texas at Arlington takes seriously its fiduciary role,” Spaniolo said in his letter to the governor. “We will be reviewing expenditures, including travel expenditures, at the highest levels of administration and will make adjustments as necessary to curtail costs.” He said the university will attempt to make use of videoconferencing in place of traveling to meetings when possible. Cost-saving efforts at the university aren’t limited to trimming travel budgets. Through energy initiatives and teaming with other UT in-

stitutions to purchase electricity and natural gas, the university eventually expects a savings of more than $3 million a year, according to Spaniolo’s letter. Oversized Sumo suits collide in a ring enclosed by cheering students. The first annual Asian Heritage Month’s last event, “I survived A Japanese Game Show,� was held Tuesday at the Maverick Activities Center. Students on the Multicultural Affairs committee decided to have a “big social event� for the finale, said Leticia Martinez, Multicultural Affairs director. “We are really proud how Asian Heritage Month came together. This is the first time at UTA and hope students had a great time,� said Martinez. The event comprised Sumo wrestling, an inflatable obstacle course and a relay race. Twelve teams composed of four members earned points by participating in each game. Each team paid $20 for the registration fee and all proceeds go to Refugee Services of Texas. “I had a lot of fun with the Sumo wrestling. It was definitely interesting having such a heavy weight on you,� nursing junior Courtney Teng said. The winners of the game show won gold, silver and bronze medals.
