Police may come to nearby bars to conduct sobriety tests due to a 60-day crackdown on intoxicated drivers and public intoxication by the Arlington Police Department and the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission.

Under Arlington’s plan, officers and commission agents will conduct patrols and bar checks in areas with a significant number of bars, said Tiera Ellis, APD media relations officer.

Those found intoxicated when officers conduct bar checks could be charged with public intoxication, she said.

J.R. Bentley’s owner Dana Ladd wasn’t aware of the crackdown, but said she isn’t worried about it losing her customers.

“We have an excellent record with TABC,” she said.

“We’ve only had one issue since I’ve owned Bentley’s.

I’ve been told by an Arlington police officer that they never have to worry about us.”

J. Gilligan’s owner Randy Ford also doesn’t believe the crackdown will present an issue for his establishment.

“It comes with the territory,” he said. “People have to be responsible, including us. We have to be responsible to make sure people aren’t overindulging or we aren’t serving underage customers.”

“No, No!” Screams echoed across Maverick Stadium on Saturday morning as sixteen women kicked, yelled and punched as if their lives depended on it. They learned ways to maneuver and gain power over their opponents — all before lunchtime.

These women weren’t in distress — they were participating in Rape Aggression Defense System, a University Police sponsored self-defense class free for UTA female faculty, staff and students.

At the end of the class, most women leave with a sense of empowerment and self-confidence, said

university police officer Randy Reynolds, lead R.A.D. instructor.

The class, which has been held for several years, teaches women how to defend themselves against sexual assault. Among those strategies, the class learned how to break the fingers of an attacker trying to strangle them.

The strategies taught at R.A.D. are basic, and participants do not have to be athletic in order to get involved, Reynolds said.

The primary idea behind the class is risk reduction, said Univeristy Police Sgt. Dean Peterson, and it teaches skills like plan making and verbalization before resorting to

The event is important now because evolution is challenged on a regular basis, she said.

To celebrate Charles Darwin’s 200th birthday and the 150th anniversary of the publishing of his book The Origin of Species, the Biology Department is sponsoring a day-long event Thursday.

Darwin Day includes lectures, a discussion, a vendor fair and a birthday cake cutting. The event is free and open to the university and general public. The lecturers will speak in 100 Nedderman Hall and the vendor fair will be in the Nedderman Hall atrium. All of the lectures will be geared toward non-science majors, so attendees will not need a scientific background.

Biology assistant professor Ellen Pritham said the organizers have spent months preparing for Darwin Day. The event’s main purpose is to celebrate Darwin’s contribution to science and to help people understand what evolution is and how it affects daily life, she said.

“Darwin is one of the most influential scientists,” she said.

“Even though he was born in the 1800s, his discoveries have changed the face of science.”

For example, his theory helped scientists understand how viruses evolve, which helps scientists develop vaccines, she said.

At the vendor fair, the scientific vendors will display things commonly used in the biology lab.

“They are there to talk about things they sell,” she said. “It’s just informational.”

test tAking Standardized Field Sobriety Test (SFST) is a battery of three tests developed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The three tests consist of: • A one-leg stand that includes holding one foot 6 inches off the ground for 30 seconds. Officers look for four signs of impairment: swaying while balancing, using arms to balance, hopping to maintain balance and putting the foot down before the test concludes.

• A walk-and-turn test that includes taking a predetermined number of steps along a line and returning. Officers are looking for eight indicators of impairment: the subject lacks balance while the officer gives instructions, begins before the instructions are finished, stops to regain balance while walking, does not touch heel-totoe, steps off the line, uses arms to balance, makes an improper turn or takes an incorrect number of steps.

• A Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test, which looks for involuntary eye movements that can indicate intoxication or difficulty following an object with the eyes.

Since the start of flu season, Health Services traffic has spiked from 480 to nearly 540 patients a week. To counter this trend, the center is now providing free vaccinations to students, faculty and staff.

According to the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, influenza is a respiratory illness caused by the virus of the same name that’s spread through coughing, sneezing, bird droppings and encounters with contaminated objects.

Health Services physician Rodger Mitchell said it is foolish not to get a flu shot.

“The flu is fairly contagious,” he said. “If you’re shaking hands with someone infected, you may easily get it.”

Symptoms include high fevers, headaches, extreme tiredness, dry cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, according to the CDC. Mitchell said the best thing would have been to get a shot around the end of September or October.

It takes two weeks for the vaccine to take full effect, but getting one now could still help prevent the flu during the rest of the season, he said.

Mitchell said there are different types of influenza and vaccines. The people who compile vaccines anticipate a certain form of the virus to spread, and they make a vaccine to counter the spread of that strain, he said.

In 2007, vaccines quickly became scarce, and some did not function properly.

Mitchell attributes last year’s complications to incorrect strain expectations.

According to the CDC, an unattended flu can lead to pneumonia, bronchitis and sinus and ear infections.

“I felt it Sunday night, and it went throughout the week until Saturday,” she said. “I didn’t want to miss any material in my class.

Despite my sickness, I still went to class.”

“Most cases are mild,” Mitchell said. “On average, about 35,000 die in the U.S. each year.”

Blum said the best way to prevent getting the flu is by washing hands.

HOUSTON — A federal appeals court has upheld the conviction and death sentence of a Houston man tied to at least four slayings during a six-month crime wave.

The ruling from the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals moves Franklin Dewayne Alix, 33, a step closer to execution for fatally shooting Eric Bridgeford, 23, during a robbery after abducting and raping Bridgeford’s sister.

Lab tests: salmonella possible at Texas plant ATLANTA — Private lab tests show there may have been salmonella at a second plant operated by the peanut company at the center of a national outbreak, but the potentially tainted products were not sent to consumers, Texas health officials said Tuesday.

The Peanut Corp. of America temporarily closed its plant in Plainview, Texas, Monday night at the request of health officials after the tests found “the possible presence of salmonella” in some of its products, the Texas Department of Health said in a statement.

Oklahoma storms damage homes, down power lines OKLAHOMA CITY — A tornado damaged homes and knocked down power lines Tuesday afternoon as severe storms moved through central Oklahoma.

Six homes were damaged or destroyed near Edmond, a suburb north of Oklahoma City.

“We are trying to dodge our storms and keep responders safe, so it is taking some time to get confirmation of damages,” city spokeswoman Claudia Deakins said. No casualties were immediately reported.

Schoolchildren were being kept in locked down schools until the storm passed.

Sri Lanka: 16 patients killed in hospital shelling COLOMBO, Sri Lanka — At least 16 patients being treated at a makeshift hospital in the northern Sri Lankan war zone were killed by shelling, the Red Cross said Tuesday, as the military accused rebel fighters of killing 19 other civilians fleeing the area.

The United Nations, meanwhile, said it was outraged by the “unnecessary” deaths of hundreds of people inside rebel territory and urged both sides to avoid fighting in civilian areas.

iranian president says talks with US possible the associated Press

TeHrAN, iran — iran’s hard-line president told crowds celebrating the islamic revolution’s anniversary Tuesday that the country is ready for talks with the United States, the strongest signal yet that Tehran welcomes President Barack obama’s calls for dialogue.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad made the comments in a speech to hundreds of thousands celebrating the 30th anniversary of the revolution, which ousted the U.Sbacked shah and installed rule by hard-line Muslim clerics.

The event led to a collapse in relations between the two countries and years of enmity.

As usual at such gatherings, there were chants of “death to America,” along with the burning of U.S. and israeli flags.

But the chanting stopped as Ahmadinejad spoke of dialogue with the United States, and the firebrand president refrained from the denunciations of America that often mark his speeches.

Since obama’s election, iranian leaders have struck a cautious tone over his campaign promises to open a dialogue with Tehran, signaling that the government was undecided on how to respond. on Tuesday, Ahmadinejad made it clear iran is prepared to talk, citing terrorism, the

elimination of nuclear weapons, restructuring the U.N. Security Council and fighting drug trafficking as possible areas for discussion.

“The iranian nation is ready for talks (with the U.S.), but in a fair atmosphere with mutual respect,” Ahmadinejad told the crowds in Tehran’s Freedom Square.

His comments came the day after obama said his administration was looking for opportunities to engage iran and pledged to rethink Washington’s relationship with Tehran.

But Ahmadinejad also declared that iran is now a “superpower” — pointing to the recent launch of the first locally made satellite into space — and made clear it expects to be treated as an equal. “if you really want to fight terrorism, come and cooperate with the iranian nation, which is the biggest victim of terrorism so that terrorism is eliminated. ... if you want to confront nuclear weapons ... you need to stand beside iran so it can introduce a correct path to you,” he said.

Ahmadinejad did not elaborate, but in the past he and other iranian leaders have criticized the U.S. for its nuclear arsenal.

His speech comes as he begins campaigning for a second term.

he new, yet-to-be-named Cowboys stadium has officially dwarfed every landmark in Arlington. In comparison, the American Airlines Center in Dallas could fit completely inside of it.

Opening the doors to the private suites lets one’s sense of smell take in the noticeable aroma of new leather, as the crashing of metal on metal can be heard from every corner of the developing stadium.

Cowboys’ owner Jerry Jones is building a larger-than-life stage for “America’s Team” that will also host high school and professional sporting events.

The field sinks 50 feet below ground level, making the scale of the stadium’s interior feel even more spacious than its exterior may suggest.

While still under construction, the stadium’s architecture draws in the eye with an elaborate use of curves and lines on a grand scale. The two quarter-mile arches that make

up the main supports for the stadium are a testimony to the design and technology involved in this project.

The conceptual planning of this stadium is evident when admiring the giant structure hanging under the traditional hole in the roof.

This structure will be home to the largest highdefinition LCD television screen in the world – measuring 180 feet across and 50 feet high.

Seeing the entire stadium from the edge of the retractable roof ’s opening is like viewing the project from God’s perspective. He will still have the best seat in the house while watching his team through the trademark hole.

The LCD structure also incorporates an updated element from the old stadium, a Cowboys’ star that lights up at night and can only be seen from an aerial view.

This new stadium will no doubt meet, if not blow away, the expectations of even the most demanding Cowboys fans when the first game is played this September.
