New owner, location for computer store Follett Higher Education Group takes over in May, providing the same software deals. BY WILLIAM JOHNSON The Shorthorn staff
Students can get their computing needs met at the UTA Book-
store starting next month. The on-campus computer store will have a new owner and location after the university ends its run in May. After the closing of Ransom Hall for renovations, the UTA Computer Store moved to The Gallery, a space previously occupied by student art galleries.
Now, plans for a new store located in the bookstore are under way. Follett Higher Education Group, the company that owns and operates the bookstore, will be the new vendor for the store. “We have relationships with all of the major developers,” Elio DiStaola, Follett public and campus
relations director, said. “Follett will bring an additional Apple presence to the new store.” DiStaola confirmed that the new store will possess the same deals on software as the current one. He said the bookstore will STORE continues on page 3

Lawyer and computer programmer Rex Burks speaks on Thursday in College Hall about privacy in the age of social networking and how it can impact job applicants. Burks also pointed out that the younger generation has grown up in an age where most information is public knowledge and the older generation keeps their personal information very private.
Facebook can poke back in the future The social networking site can harm your career if you aren’t careful, lawyer says. BY CHARLOTTE LEE The Shorthorn staff
Rex Burks said Facebook can put people in legal trouble. The military sales and service lawyer and Greg Bateson, Western Hills High school teacher, advised students and staff on using networking tools and the impact on their career and personal life at Thursday’s “Facebook: The Shorthorn: Andrew Buckley
The Image You Convey” lecture in College Hall sponsored by Honors College Council. Students, faculty and staff shared stories about social networking in their lives. Burks talked about the legal issues and how the things people put on Facebook can lead them to face lawful charges. He said people shouldn’t lie and should behave themselves online. “Some people lie when they fill out the insurance form, like they say they don’t smoke, but if something happened and the insurance company finds out they smoke in the pictures,
it’s under criminal law and you can go to jail,” he said. Bateson said things people put on Web sites like Facebook are public knowledge. Carter Bedford, Student Governance and Organizations associate director, said social networks are nothing new. “I am 30 now,” he said. “When I was in college, we used College Club, which is like Facebook, but they started to charge for membership.” FACEBOOK continues on page 4

The Rosebud Theatre was filled with reckless drivers Thursday night. The Beer Goggle Bonanza, hosted by MavsACT, had more than 100 attendees participating in beer goggle Barbie dress-up, beer goggle bowling, a drunken driving simulation and a sobriety line. Participants wore goggles that allowed users to experience the effects of alcohol. The event aimed to raise awareness about alcohol culture. Nursing sophomore Denise Torres participated in the driving simulation. When she started piloting a remote-controlled car, while wearing the goggles, she said everything looked blurry. She said she couldn’t see straight. “Don’t drink and drive because you don’t have a sense of direction, she said. Nursing sophomore Jessica Blain tried to bowl while wearing beer goggles. The ball went far right, hitting no pins, but she said she saw everything in line. “It shows you how you feel when you are drunk, she said. “You think you are fine, but you are not. Business junior Miguel Lara attempted to walk a sobriety line with the goggles on but said his vision shifted. “When I put the goggles on my

The university approached Follett as a possible vendor last semester, Sullivan said. Due to the limited space in the University Center, she said, the university wanted to consolidate its operations. In a previous Shorthorn article, the closing of the current store will displace 12-year manager Pam Tremaine and employee Debra Hass, both are Office of Information and Technology employees. Broadcast communications freshman Harrison Stanley expressed mixed reactions over the news. “I feel like it’ll be isolated from the rest of campus. The good thing is that this probably means better stuff. The bad is how far it is,” he said. “It beats going to Best Buy, though.” DiStaola described the new location as a mini-Apple Store. topics including updates on downtown art, music, food and architecture. “The area has a lot of untapped potential and a lot of students see it as very one dimensional in that they just come here to get an education and leave,” Stark said. “With the amount of diversity that we have on this campus, it can become the cultural epicenter for the Dallas-Fort Worth area.” Stark said UTA’s 3,000 international student enrollment is an asset the city should use to its advantage. With a strong interest in downtown development, Stark came up with the idea for the blog after exploring downtown and its history and wanting to document the city’s development. “There’s a lot of students

that realize that downtown isn’t a real hotbed for things to do. There’s not a whole lot of outlets to have a decent nightlife,” he said. “It fragments our campus into two different groups of people, those who live here and those who don’t.” Stark said the city and university recognize that throwing the campus and the downtown area together is important in bringing the two groups together. Councilwoman Lana Wolff agreed. “As we begin to merge the town and gown, we will begin to develop the density we need to become a more vibrant and diverse city,” she said. The Arlington City Council is investing much into the university because they realize the positive impact it may have on the area, said Wolff, who represents the fifth district that includes UTA. The city is helping to pave
the way for UTA’s $36 million College Park development and the $2.1 million pedestrian plaza. Both will be constructed along Center Street near the $78 million special events center, which is expected to be complete by fall 2011. Other developments include the city’s initiative to construct the $1.2 million Levitt Pavillion in Arlington along Abram Street. The city has the infrastructure in place it needs to grow, Stark said. He said it’s only a matter of the city and the university realizing downtown’s potential to grow. “If you look around the downtown, there are many possibilities for growth,” said Barbara Becker, Urban and Public Affairs dean. Becker, a city-planning expert, said downtown Arlington has many structures and buildings in place that will help with development. Empty store fronts in
downtown provides businesses with the means to come to downtown without having to worry about construction, she said. “One great asset the city has is railroad tracks running through downtown,” she said. “Mass transit can help bring the density needed to create demand for some of the things students and residents are asking for.” With more than 28,000 students enrolled, UTA students make up one of the largest demographics in downtown. Meeting the needs of students should be top priority for the city and the university, Stark said. “I also want people to realize that Arlington is a hotbed for cultural diversity and growth.” he said. “I want people to read my blog and see that downtown is changing.”
House of Representatives and S.729 in the Senate, once conditional residency is obtained, the recipient will have six years to either complete two years of college or two years of military service before they will be eligible for permanent residency. Cortez said the act will affect not only undocumented students, but their families and friends as well. Mechanical engineering junior Omar Rosales said he plans to attend the camp, as well as the Mega March that is scheduled to take place in downtown Dallas on May 1. Rosales said he is marching
for his undocumented friends. “I see this as a civil rights issue,” he said. “In the history of the U.S., marches have seemed to work.” LULAC Mavericks will hold a Mega March student committee meeting following the DREAM Camp scheduled to follow in the same room. Cortez hopes to draw out attendees for the Mega March in Dallas. Cortez said charter buses have been donated to transport people to the march. She said if enough people show up to the Saturday meetings, she could get one of those buses to come to UTA.
Nicole Anonuevo, LULAC Mavericks vice presidentelect, said the act would directly affect current and future college students. Since undocumented students can’t apply for federal aid, they have limited resources, she said. “We don’t realize as students how fortunate we are to have an education,” Anonuevo said. She said undocumented people can’t vote, work or drive without living in constant fear of deportation.

Sports careers aren’t just for athletes Gregg Elkin, associate athletic director for communications and marketing, will speak about various job opportunities in athletics. The lecture will be from 10 a.m. to noon Monday in the Lone Star Auditorium. The event is free and open to all. He said he hopes to show students the jobs in athletics available for them. Elkin said he’ll talk about what it’s like to work in the athletics field and how to achieve a satisfying career off the basketball courts and football fields. “You’ll find a lot of students

Elkin said jobs in sports management, public relations, Web site designing and advertising are different aspects of work in athletics but aren’t typically associated with the field. The Burden of the Body
R.I.P. Student Services
Candidates need to step up.
The Shorthorn: Thea Blesener
Student services sacrificed in the name of expansion.

n the 55 pages of the university’s Tier One plan, the student body was barely mentioned — as if the school had grown too large for its life blood. In our arrogance, we wish to be ranked among the top 125 research institutions in the nation. Let us now pay the price. It seems our once humble university no longer visibly cares about its students. What happened to the university specifically dedicated to the studies of the students? Where are our study lounges? When did we lose our heart? Was it when we decided to demolish the Legacy Heights apartments and replace it with a parking lot? Or was it when we decided to force growth for recognition? Maybe we don’t need to have study areas. Or maybe, having a building specifically dedicated to round-the-clock

Maybe our plans for the university don’t need students. Maybe nothing should be done about the rising tide of arrogance. Maybe we just need to adjust to the
new environment: study in the library, eat earlier and move out of our homes so that we can make more room for parking lots, event centers and other more important things that higher education institutions should be worried with. Let us all go to our new parking lots. Sweet UTA, may we apologize for trying to spoil your beauty and innocence, but worry not; soon we will notice our folly and try to salvage what is left of our community. Sooner or later, we will learn to appreciate what we have and hold on to our sweet alma mater. Sooner or later, we will come to your aid and allow you to mature on your own. Let’s just hope it’s sooner rather than later so that we can still keep your spirit mostly intact.

Yet, nothing was mentioned of Spaniolo offering to take a salary cut in order to keep people who have dedicated themselves to the university and not have to offer them a severance package at all. Thanks for the recognition. Great job to William Johnson for a beautiful article on the UTA Cheer Squad’s recent national championship win. I am a mom of one of the cheerleaders, and I can tell you that all of these kids work their butts off. am so thankful to The Shorthorn for recognizing their accomplishment. Way to go guys for a great article on an awesome cheer squad at UTA! [Spirit Teams coordinator William Strother] has done such a tremendous job preparing these kids, and they brought UTA a national championship. Can you tell I am still on cloud nine? I was there! josa when they suffered an mutlimillion dollar shortfall, virtually the only solution offered was letting people go. Part of any university’s budget involves the salaries of not only the people working on the front lines, but also those calling the shots. If the university is called upon to take action to help meet a state mandate; why is it acceptable for only the “little people” to face hardships while the elite sit in their mansions eating steak; while those electing to leave face all levels of uncertainty in their future? When will the leadership of the university demonstrate some by leading through their own example? If some university personnel are being asked to not only lose their salary but their very position, the higher-ups should also be more than willing to show support and honor their sacrifice by volunteering to take a salary cut of their own.

udget tightening for UTA? How about from the top down? The university is implementing a volunteer program to eliminate over 240 administrative, professional and full-time staff in order to achieve a policy mandated by Gov. Rick Perry requiring all state institutions to cut their budget by 5 percent. Great idea. In an economy, where it is being reported on how many people are having so much difficulty finding work after being laid off, lets put more people from our own community out there to face the same situation. While university spokeswoman Kristin Sullivan has made mention of the severance plan, $20,000 or 50 percent of an employee’s base salary, there is one area that was not mentioned — the salaries of our own university president, provost and vice presidents. It is public record that President James Spaniolo earns over $400,000 annually, and if
Student Governance elections are next week, and it is time for students to voice their opinion on who they think should represent them. But for those elected, this is just the beginning of their responsibility to their constituents. Members of SC speak for the students. The SC president sits on many university committees and communicates what we think should happen. The SC president has spoken directly to the UT System Board of Regents on issues that affect students. Because of this great responsibility, it is important that all candidates, not just the SC presidential candidates, be aware of what is expected and required of them. In the past, SC has generated changes in the university that are beneficial to students. Last semester, a petition started by SC played a major part in keeping the Palo Duro Lounge from becoming a computer lab instead of a multi-use room, something that many students take advantage of. This same sort of dedication to students is necessary in the next SC. Members need to have a clear idea of what they want accomplished before taking office. A plan of attack will ensure that most, if not all, goals can be accomplished or, at least, attempted. For senators, strolling into a position that can affect the lives of the 850 students they represent without a game plan can result in good ideas being neglected. Another factor to consider is that some SC positions are paid. That pay is to compensate members for being the representatives of their constituents. The SC president is one of the highest paid student positions on campus because his or her constituents are the entire student body. It is his or her responsibility to ensure that the student voice is being heard in every way possible. The job description of SC members may sound complicated, but it can be narrowed down to one simple concept: Be the voice of the student body. Everything listed above is mandatory to succeed at this responsibility. Being a representative is not a matter of gliding through unnoticed and doing the bare minimum for your job. It is succeed or fail. It’s not put up or shut up. It’s put up. There is no other option.

Men’s Tennis
Mavs prepare for 3 matches in 3 days As the Southland Conference Tournament approaches for the men’s tennis team, the Mavs are facing huge tests as they play three matches in the next three days. Having had a short practice Thursday afternoon, the men’s team worked on doubles and serves to prepare for the weekend. Senior captain Dmitry Minkin said fatigue won’t be a factor for the Mavs at all. “We are in pretty good shape,” he said. With very little time left before the SLC Tournament, the Mavs will face two conference opponents and one non-conference. The first conference match will be against Nicholls State at 2 p.m. on Friday at the Tennis Center. Nicholls State is sitting in third place with a 2-2 record in SLC. Head coach Diego Benitez said Nicholls State is a good, tough team. “Their strength is the bottom of their lineup,” he said. “Nicholls likes to keep the ball in play as much as they can.” However, Benitez said he is confident about his team. “We have beat them consistently before,” he said. “But I know my team will play the best they can to win.” In last year’s matchup, the Mavs won 4-0. On Saturday at 10 a.m., the Mavs will meet the United States Air Force Academy for the very first time. “Air Force will be an exciting match,” Benitez said. “They like to play tennis indoors.” However, Benitez said playing indoors is a disadvantage for the Falcons. “The ball travels much faster indoors,” he said. “But they won’t do well with the elements of the wind and the sun.” After the match against Air Force, the Mavs will travel straight to San Antonio to play against UT-San Antonio on Sunday morning. Assistant coach Marco Matteucci said UT-San Antonio is a very good team. “Their strength is doubles play,” he said. “But in this conference, everything is up in the air. The teams are equal.” In last year’s match against the Roadrunners, the Mavs lost a back and forth match 4-3. — Will Doan
The baseball team will play at McNeese state this weekend. Check out Tuesday’s edition for the results.
