Our Cattle Get Slapped a Lot!

DO IT WITH FLAIR™ — RAY BRIDWELL DID

We’ve used the Flair™ formula for exceeding four years and feel strongly that it helped us reach our goal of show ring hair on our heifers. Our heifers took well to the Flair™ formula and I was pleased with the results. Kelli, our Indiana State Fair and NAILE Supreme Heifer, responded like a dream. — Ray Bridwell, Covington IN If you want your cattle to get slapped in the show ring, add some Flair to your ration. Order Showmaster® Flair™ at showmasterestore.com or stop by your local Showmaster® dealer Available at Sullivan Supply.

Strategies for Rescuing Your Retirement Work with your Financial Advisor. There are many do-it-yourself investment resources available to investors today, but none of them can replace the experienced, personal service they provide. Advisors have the expertise and resources to offer an understanding of your complete financial picture, not just your investments. Additionally, in periods of market volatility, when you need the most support, they also can provide: • Access to important decision-making research and information • Ongoing monitoring of your investment portfolio, while anticipating your changing needs • A comprehensive plan for retirement that takes into consideration your other goals—education funding and estate planning, for instance—and includes real responses to market volatility and what the changing markets mean for you Have a plan. Developing a financial plan is one of the best ways to meet your long-term goals. Your plan should also include a market volatility action plan to help you set realistic goals and manage return expectations in “what if ” situations. Create a new plan for yourself or refine an existing one. Importantly, you should follow up at set intervals or whenever changes in your life warrant a financial review. Invest regularly. If you are still working, saving part of your salary for your retirement is an excellent way to rebuild savings that were depressed by market conditions. Your investment could buy more shares of lower-prices equities and other securities that are “on sale” due to market conditions but show good potential. If you don’t feel comfortable investing in more equities, you can choose investments with less risk for your new contributions. Generate an asset allocation analysis to ensure that your financial holdings, both inside and outside of your retirement accounts, are working together to provide you with a well-diversified portfolio that meets your needs and risk parameters.

Consider working longer. As the unemployment rate continues to rise, holding onto a good-paying job that brings in a regular income can be your lifeline prior to—and even during—retirement. According to a 2007 Urban Institute study, the combination of working longer, continuing to save, reducing spending and delaying Social Security benefits could significantly increase your retirement income. Just like part-time work allowed many people to find a balance between their work and personal lives, part-time retirement could help control the uncertainties of the financial markets by providing an extra cushion of income to fund the pleasures of your retirement. Check your cash flow. Keeping track of where your money goes can give you a better picture of how long your retirement funds might last, or how much you might need to save. Perform a cashflow analysis to take the guessing out of this process. Consolidate plans for easier management. Bringing all your financial assets together into one retirement account and/or one spending account can help clarify exactly what you have, where you are spending it and how you might invest your funds to manage them better. Part of the consolidation process will be a comprehensive assessment of your financial holdings and how they might be managed more efficiently to provide you with the current lifestyle and the future retirement you envision. From Our Farm to Yours: Trans Ova Genetics IVF Satellite Centers In vitro fertilization (IVF) is coming to a location near you! When IVF first began, it was at a single location in Sioux Center, Iowa. Not only did all of the donors have to travel to the location in Sioux Center, all of the embryos had to be transferred at that location as well. As the application of IVF technology rapidly grew, Trans Ova Genetics understood that in order to provide full service to our clients, they had to bring the technology closer to our clients’ farm or residence. Today, Trans Ova Genetics has three regional IVF centers located in Sioux Center, Iowa; Centerville, Texas; and Boonsboro, Maryland. In addition to developing these regional laboratories, research and development efforts have focused on bringing IVF even closer to the clients’ farm. Trans Ova Genetics is focused on developing satellite locations where donors can be collected closer to their home. These satellite centers, coupled with Trans Ova’s Fresh Ship program, allow clients not only to keep their donors close to home, but also allow them to transfer their embryos fresh into their own recipients. Trans Ova Genetics’ Fresh Ship program is exactly as its name implies. The program allows for fresh embryos to be packaged in special culture solutions, and then placed into portable incubators. These portable incubators keep the embryos at the appropriate temperature – it cools on a warm summer day and heats on a cold winter day. These incubators can then be shipped via UPS or FedEx direct to a client’s farm. Once embryos arrive on location, Trans Ova Genetics’ Fresh Ship program has allowed beef & dairy farms to continue to work

with their local embryo transfer provider for the synchronization of recipients and implantation of the embryos. Another important part of this program is that it allows Trans Ova Genetics’ Professional Service Team to perform the oocyte collections. Trans Ova Genetics feels this has been important for two reasons. Most importantly, it allows for highly skilled specialized professional service team members to perform this important procedure. Equally important to collection is oocyte handling and technique. Secondly, it is important for Trans Ova Genetics to maintain an interface directly with our clients. Not only does Trans Ova Genetics enjoy our client relationships, but it also allows our team members to continually assess your client needs. This is vital as it provides direction to Trans Ova Genetics industry-leading research and development program. When the Trans Ova Genetics’ IVF satellite centers are coupled with the Fresh Ship program, the results have been excellent. There has been no decrease in efficiency in oocyte harvest, embryo production, or pregnancy rate. Trans Ova Genetics’ IVF Satellite Locations are located across the country. The same concept is being applied with our existing centers located in Chillicothe, Missouri, Grinnell, Iowa, and the White/McLemore Center in Fletcher, Oklahoma. Feel free to call our Trans Ova Genetics’ client service team members at your nearest location to ask how our Fresh Ship program can multiply success for you and your operation!

Value of Corn Distillers Grains in Finishing Diets Second article in the series: “Seventy Percent DGS Can Work” Of the many emails I receive each day, an interesting title caught my eye recently. The title, “Corn and Cattle Prices Generate Confusing Signals” prompted me to reflect a moment. This past fall we saw corn prices and fed cattle prices rise simultaneously, and a few weeks later fall at the same time. Whatever happened to the good ole days when corn fell and fed cattle prices rose? Oh, I know! They really weren’t so good! In this age of volatility it is good to know that the one thing is a constant – it pays to include DGS in finishing cattle diets. In this article I am sharing with you some of the results of the last three finishing trials we have conducted at Illinois State University that evaluated the dietary inclusion of modified wet (60% moisture) DGS. I will refer to these trials as Trials 4, 5 and 6. Table 1 (next page) shows the composition of the diets used in these feeding trials. Each of these diets included the ionophore Rumensin fed at the rate of 200 mg:cattle:day to improve feed efficiency and included thiamine (Vit.B1) fed at the rate of 200 mg:cattle:day to help prevent PEM (polioencephalomalacia). We believe it is important to always include an ionphore of your choosing to help prevent coccidiosis and to improve feed efficiency. We, also, believe it is important to include thiamine whenever the dietary inclusion of DGS exceeds 25% of diet DM. We recommend the addition of 100 mg:cattle:day of thiamine when DGS is less than 40% of diet DM and 200 mg:cattle:day whenever DGS exceeds 40% of diet DM. These are just responsible BMP’s (best management practices). The cattle in Trials 4 and 6 were weaned steer calves and the cattle in Trial 5 were yearling steers. All cattle were Angus X Continental crosses. Table 2 shows the analytical composition of the DGS and the diets. It is important to note that the fat content of the DGS fed in these trials was only 6.5 – 7.5% fat (mean = 7.08%). Most dry grind (new generation) ethanol plants produce higher fat DGS containing 11.5 to 12.5% fat. One of the reasons why the cattle of these trials performed as well as they did on the 70% DGS diets may be do to the lower fat content of the DGS that was fed. As total dietary crude fat approaches 9% of DM intake cattle performance usually decreases. Whether or not cattle will perform as well as they did in these trials when cattle are fed diets containing 70% DGS containing higher fat levels (11.0 – 12.5% fat) has not been determined. We have recently started a feeding trial utilizing higher fat DGS to evaluate the efficacy of feeding diets containing up to 70% “higher fat” DGS. The 70% DGS diet fed in Trials 4, 5 and 6 contained 0.53% sulfur and whenever the dietary sulfur concentration approaches and/or exceeds 0.45% of the diet DM, sulfur toxicity may occur. Only one steer in Trial 6 expressed symptoms of PEM and died of

140

January/February 2011 • theshowcircuit.com

sulfur toxicity. Never-the-less as previously noted, sulfur toxicity always should be a concern when feeding higher levels of DGS. Tables 3 – 8 show the performance and economic analyses of the three trials. Within these tables, numbers within a row with different superscripts are considered significantly different. All other numbers within rows without superscripts are considered similar. In Trial 4 (Tables 3 and 4) the steers fed the 70/40 DGS diet were fed 70 DGS for the first 84 days on feed and 40% DGS from day 84 until harvest. Generally, these trials suggest that 25% DGS inclusion results in the greatest biological cattle performance i.e. less average daily feed intake (ADFI) and improved feed efficiency as measured by average daily gain over average daily feed intake (G:F); and, that 70% DGS inclusion results in greater ADFI but not always increased DMI (average daily dry matter intake). In these trials there was little difference in marbling scores (MS) and yield grades (YG) of the cattle regardless of the dietary inclusion level of DGS, but there was a non-significant trend for cattle fed the 70% DGS diets to have lower numerical MS (i.e. lower quality grades), and perhaps a few more days on feed. Economic efficiency data contained within these tables is the real story. While cattle fed the 70% DGS diets returned similar to lower dollars per hundred weight of carcass at harvest and fewer gross dollars were returned per steer, because of significantly less total feed cost per steer, the 70% DGS fed steers always returned more dollars over feed cost per steer than control fed or 25% DGS fed steers. However, from an economic perspective steers fed 40% DGS diets always returned the most gross dollars over feed cost compared to control, 25% DGS or 70% DGS fed steers. Table 9 is an interesting table as it compares the relative cost and economic value of feeding DGS. From the summer of 2010 through the fall of 2010, the price of wet DGS in Illinois did not vary much but was closely priced around $35:wet ton, regardless of how the price of corn fluctuated from $3.50:bushel up to $6.00:bu and back to $5.25:bushel. The data of this table shows that the greatest percent economic improvement when feeding DGS occurs with 25% DGS inclusion and increases as the percent DGS inclusion increases but increases at a decreasing rate. Cost of gain decreases 24.7% at 25% DGS inclusion, 32.5% for 40% DGS inclusion but at only 36.5% for 70% DGS. All things evaluated, 40% DGS inclusion may be the most efficacous inclusion level, but depending on feedlot performance, total feed cost and degree of management expertise, 70% DGS may return the most dollars over feed cost if the price is right. My next article “What About Consumer Acceptance” will continue this series.

Showmanship Points by Division

Oklahoma Club Calf Association - November ‘10 Greetings from OCCA, Hope this letter finds everyone well. As I am writing this, it is Thanksgiving week. Hope you get to spend lots of quality time with family. As for me, I am spending it with my extended family working a sale in southern Oklahoma. The members of OCCA have been very busy chasing points and wearing out their parents. All the reports I am getting indicate the shows have been great and very competitive. Go to the website, check your points, make sure they are correct. If not, let Nancy or a director know soon, and we will get it fixed. Again we want to thank our sponsors, Purina, Cinch, Cruel Girl, and CM Trailers. Without you, this would not happen. Some big shows are coming up... Elk City, Lawton, Wilburton, and AGR. Good luck, be safe, and we will see you at the shows.

Tim B Stidham, OCCA President www.oklahomaclubcalfassociation.com

TheAngle You Can’t Eat Hair

I grew up on a small farm in Southern Ohio, and my first 4H project was a feeder calf I showed at the Highland County Fair. At nine years old, I was a future PETA (people eating tasty animals…) member in training, as evidenced by my decision to name the steer “Hamburger.” An Angus-Limousin cross I carefully chose from the neighbor’s herd, Hamburger actually won his weight class at the fair that year, and launched forever my love of the beef business in general, and showing cattle in particular. Hamburger was a fine critter, but I have no false illusions about how he might fare in today’s show ring. Over the decade I showed actively in 4-H and FFA I never placed better than I did with Hamburger, though the first calf I ever sold out of my own herd of Maine-cross cows won my county fair feeder show… the first year I was too old to show myself, ironically. Dad taught us well how to feed a steer. At least four of my market steers that I can account for sold through the fair sale to local business owners looking to fill their own freezers with locally produced beef. I still consider as a badge of honor the comment from one of those buyers that we produced some of the best beef he ever bought. Harvesting my own show steer one year, I was exceptionally pleased with the quality of our produce, for our homegrown cattle performed successfully in terms of both yield and quality. Even so, the pursuit of that perfect coat of hair bedeviled me. I never did get that cool-room built, although the pieces and parts I bought still sit in a corner of Dad’s barn. I love looking at a classy fitting job, and I remember the days we still used cobweb and horsehair to really build legs… There was something to be said for the artistry of doing a great job fitting a steer or heifer, and I still admire the skill and dexterity of someone truly gifted with a set of clippers. I never felt I had quite the right touch with an Andi’s or Oster in my hand, but I know a lot of great friends who can carve amazing creatures out of a pile of well-grown and well-groomed hair. Fast forward several years from my youth exhibition experience to my professional life as a farm broadcaster. Working for a large farm radio station and then a large farm radio network, I spent the last eight or nine summers visiting dozens of county and state fairs every year. Thoroughly enjoying visits to the beef barns and show rings across the region, I always looked forward to interviewing 4-H and FFA members about their projects. My goal in an interview with a showman is always two-fold: first, to share something unique and special about each young person I meet; and secondly, to help tell the story of why livestock exhibition is one of the greatest youth activities available in our country today. My biggest challenge in accomplishing those goals? Us “show steer” folk sure like to talk about hair. It never fails. I will meet a great teenager who worked all year long to get their steer prepped and ready for exhibition. They know unbelievable things about animal care and husbandry, about nutrition and genetics, about raising quality livestock, and I am ready to help them tell thousands of consumers about how great it is to raise livestock for exhibition. When all of a sudden… the first words out of their mouth are about all the hours they spent growing a good hair coat. My whole mission is scrapped

before it ever got off the ground. Don’t get me wrong: it DOES take hours, and days and months of hard work and dedication to prepare a steer for exhibition, and proper grooming makes up a huge number of those hours. BUT (and this is a big deal): you can’t eat hair. Stop and say it with me now: “You can’t eat hair.” Why is this important? Several good reasons come to mind. First, we are in a huge fight with the enemies of animal agriculture about how and why we house and manage food animals in our society. Radical anti-meat organizations like the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) have a stated goal of ending the consumption of meat. They attack hunting, fishing, the circus and the rodeo as cruelty to animals. Just wait until they hear about what we do to get a show steer ready for exhibition. Think those practices won’t be a target, too? More importantly, however, is the importance of telling our story to the consumer. The average American has no interest in HSUS’s goal of forcing us all into vegetarian lifestyles. But, they also have little interest in learning why it is important to grow hair on a steer or heifer. Because of this disinterest, anti-agriculture activists easily influence consumers. With that in mind, when 4-H and FFA members talk to the public or to the media about livestock projects, it is more important than ever to help connect with providing consumers a safe, nutritious, enjoyable eating experience. Talking about hair further confuses an already confused public about what we do on the farm. Think about it another way: If you were a consumer, perhaps already concerned that farmers mistreat their animals because you saw something on the internet or television, what do you think when you hear an exhibitor start talking about hair? Or, consider the number one question I hear from folks outside the show cattle circuit: “What’s hair have to do with raising beef in the first place?” The answer? Not one single thing. I raise Shorthorns, so I appreciate hair as much as the next showman. Don’t take my commentary as some radical suggestion that we should all adopt slick-shear shows at our county fairs. What I am saying is that we as exhibitors, or as parents of exhibitors, or as breeders selling to exhibitors, MUST keep first things first. The main goal of raising beef cattle is to produce wholesome, nutritious, tasty beef. Anything and everything else is a distant second to that goal and mission. When talking to the public or to the press, consider talking about things like: proper animal nutrition, the amazing quality of American beef, or the importance of hard work and dedication on the farm. Think about the kinds of stories consumers need to hear about food production and raising cattle in particular, and how you can share those messages through your experience. Livestock exhibitors are the hardest working young people in America, and hundreds of thousands of us can trace success in adulthood to lessons we learned from Mom and Dad in the barn getting ready for the fair. Let’s tell that part of our story to the public. Let’s quit talking about hair, and start talking about all the other great life lessons we’re learning out in the barn.
