CALVING EASE SIRE SUPREME. One of the easiest calving purebred Simmentals in the breed. The last 4 years we have had over 100 heifers calve out of him and have almost never had to pull a calf. They are stylish, correct with growth, performance and eye appeal. Our cattle have to do a lot of walking, we are fussy about good feet and legs. There is an epidemic of back curly toes and toeing out on the front legs in both Simmentals and Angus. He is the most correct bull you will find. He is a Duracell by Dream On x Built Right. His dam was the Grand Champion Female at the American Royal. You NEED to Try Him.

HAVE you HERD
Life After The Show Ring As a recipient of the Show Circuit magazine, and someone reading this article- you most likely wouldn’t be offended by the comment, “you were raised in a barn.” Most showmen hit the ring at a young age, and continue to spend what seems like an endless amount of time in the show barn throughout their show career. As a livestock exhibitor, you spent every weekend, and as much time as possible working with your show string as you also juggled school, sports and other extracurricular activities. But as the saying goes, all good things must come to an end. You have now reached the age where you are too old to show, but does that really mean your involvement has to come to an end?!
Something I would like to bring to the attention of all young leaders within the agricultural industry, is to continue being involved after your show career. While completing your secondary education, take advantage of the opportunities available to you through organizations both on and off campus. Developing leadership skills by not only participating in these groups, but also serving as an officer or committee member, will only help you as you prepare to enter the workforce. Being a part of associations allows you to network, develop leadership skills, and also learn the importance of time management. In South Dakota, there are numerous associations available to young leaders in agriculture. A few examples include the South Dakota
Farm Bureau’s Young Farmers and Ranchers Program. This program is dedicated to South Dakota Farm Bureau members between the ages of 18 and 35, looking to network with other young individuals active in agriculture, assist with planning and executing workshops and state convention, as well as continuing their education and enhancing their leadership skills. Not to mention, sharing their story with others and learning from one another as they work to improve and diversify their operations. Another example is the South Dakota Cattlemen’s Association (SDCA). The SDCA is dedicated to advance and protect the interests of all cattlemen by enhancing profitability through representation, promotion, and information sharing. As a member of SDCA, you are able to assist with promotional and educational activities throughout the year including the South Dakota State Fair, DakotaFest, the SDCA Annual Convention, and other events held by local affiliates.
Agricultural associations are dedicated to not only representing the individuals who make up this great industry, but also looking for younger individuals to join their association and be active members. To keep the agricultural world moving in the right direction, it is the responsibility of the next generation to continue their involvement and leadership in order to make our industry both efficient, and sustainable. When it comes time to find your fit of how

you will be involved after showing livestock, I encourage you to look into programs like your state’s Farm Bureau Association and Cattlemen’s Associations. Memberships are available on local, regional and national levels. Do your part, and let your leadership skills shine. PROFESSOR to PRODUCER
RULES OF THUMB FOR FEEDING DISTILLERS GRAINS TO BEEF CATTLE Numerous nutrition specialists, including myself, have written numerous articles regarding the feeding of by-products from the corn ethanol industry. Hence, I question the need for another article regarding distillers’ grains but, the ethanol industry is not standing still, and innovative changes are occurring that are changing the nutritional value of distiller grains (DGS). For several years now ethanol plants have been removing some of the corn oil from DGS (on the backend of ethanol production) to sell as an additional co-product. More recently technology has been developed to remove some of the protein (on the front end of ethanol production) from the corn grain prior to fermentation. While several ethanol plants produce reduced fat DGS, few plants are currently utilizing the protein removal technology due to the high cost of its implementation. These changes in ethanol production change the nutritional value and the economical value of DGS as we currently know it. Ethanol production of the future will produce several value-added co-products and will change the feeding value of DGS.
SO, HERE ARE SOME RULES-OF-THUMB FOR WHAT WE KNOW NOW: • When fed at 20% or less of the diet dry matter (DM), DGS is considered a protein feedstuff , as it is fed primarily to supply protein.
• HFDGS generally contains between 10.0% and 12.0% CF on a DM basis and has more energy than RFDGS.
• When fed at greater than 20% of the diet DM, DGS is considered an energy feedstuff as it is providing both protein and energy.
• CDS contains about one fourth the amount of crude fiber (NDF and ADF) on a DM basis as DDGS.
• When DGS is fed at 25-45% of the diet DM, protein is overfed, exceeding NRC estimated requirements. The excess protein is utilized as an energy source along with the fiber and fat content. Even though protein is overfed, a diet containing DGS can still be more economical than a diet balanced for protein and energy without DGS.
• Most diets containing CDS, DGS, or DDGS must have added calcium to maintain a Ca/P ratio between 1.2:1 to 2:1.
• Dried Distillers Grains with Solubles (DDGS) when fed as an energy source above 20% of the diet DM are usually too expensive for inclusion in beef cattle diets. • High moisture distillers grains with solubles (DGS) vary in water content. • Wet DGS contains more than 60% moisture, usually only 30-40 dry matter (DM). • Modified wet DGS contains less than 60% moisture, usually 50-60 DM. • DDGS and DGS vary in crude fat (CF) content sometimes referred to as high fat DGS (HFDGS) and reduced fat DGS (RFDGS). • Condensed distillers solubles (CDS) is the syrup or stillage that is added to distillers grains to produce DDGS or DGS. • Ethanol plants centrifuge (spin) the CDS to remove some of the fat prior to adding CDS to distillers grains. • CDS is a liquid, contains 30 to 40% DM and can be fed as a feedstuff by itself, as part of DGS or as a part of a total mixed ration (TMR). • DDGS, DGS and CDS contain relatively low calcium (0.20%), high phosphorous (0.40 – 0.80%) and high sulfur (0.20 – 0.80%) contents on a DM basis. • RFDGS generally contains between 5.0% and 8.0% CF on a DM basis and has less energy than HFDGS.
• The greatest biological efficiency (lbs. of gain to lbs. of feed required) occurs around 25% DGS dietary inclusion (DM basis). • The greatest economic efficiency (least cost:lb. of gain) occurs around 40% DGS dietary inclusion (DM basis) • Modified wet DGS can be fed up to 70% inclusion (DM basis). • DGS inclusion at 70% of DM equals greater economic efficiency than 0% DGS inclusion. • As dietary inclusion of high moisture DGS increases so does average daily feed intake (ADFI) increase. • As dietary inclusion of HFDGS increases above 40%, dry matter intake (DMI) decreases. • As dietary inclusion of RFDGS increases above 40%, DMI increases. • Expect similar average daily gain (ADG) regardless of DGS inclusion rate. • Compared to control diets HFDGS improves feed efficiency (G:F ratio) more than RFDGS. • Performance of cattle fed RFDGS differs from cattle fed HFDGS especially at 70% inclusion. • At 70% inclusion RFDGS may decrease G:F ratio. • Dietary inclusion of modified wet DGS at 40% of DM regardless of fat content (HFDGS or RFDGS), has little effect on carcass characteristics. • At 70% dietary inclusion RFDGS and HFDGS have a tendency to lower quality grade.

Keep Showin’ Up The Industry Needs You
Written by Stephanie Sindel, SC Staff
I remember being told a long time ago that EVERYTHING IS POLITICAL. Let that sink in for a moment … No, I’m not talking about why you were 3rd in class at a show you think you had in the bag. While there are conspiracy theorists, and major media outlets are taking sides, we [rural America] are being affected by things that “don’t happen here”. First and foremost, I’m not a physician, nor do I have a medical degree; so I am not here to dispute the novel coronavirus and the science surrounding it. I would, however, like to point out a few facts regarding how our lives have been affected from a stock showing perspective. Never in a million years would I have imagined that shows such as the National Western and Fort Worth Stock Shows; our neighbors to the north’s iconic Calgary Stampede; and perhaps the livestock show manager’s worst nightmare, the shutdown of an event mid-show like what happened back in March at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. We hear major media headlines about how this hasn’t happened since World War II and how events’ sitting boards voted unanimously to cancel. As a vast majority of the event’s supporters and attendees sit back and remark, “Not one person on that board cares about my __________ (kids, livestock, business)”. You can fill in the blank. Shocking, right? We are left with a whirlwind of questions. How can some states carry on as if nothing is happening? What
44 November/December 2020 • theshowcircuit.com
if shows continue to cancel? Should I buy livestock? How am I going to sell livestock? History always repeats itself. How and why did these events come to fruition? The answer is to showcase the most elite livestock genetics to promote to fellow stockmen to better their herds. These events came to be long before modern-day technology and infrastructure. You’ll notice that a lot of the original livestock exhibition facilities are located along railways – this was how they got livestock in before modern means of livestock transport. Oftentimes, a fairgrounds or expo center may be in a part of town that is “rougher” than we’re accustomed to. Reason being, a lot of times these facilities are located in a very old part of town where the prominence of the area faded when workplaces shifted to a different part of the city. These facilities are predominantly dictated by either state or local government, sometimes both. During times outside of a pandemic, this can be the best scenario from a budgetary standpoint. The fundraising component through private donations to build a complex of this magnitude can move at a snail’s pace. Furthermore, the advancement of a facility that can be offered through a state’s Capital budget provides alternative improvements to the complex through private funding and donation. As you can see, the scenarios work hand-in-hand to get us where we are today with facility rental and livestock shows. Nearly everyone
who has participated in a state fair or national livestock show has reaped the benefits of the facilities’ political ties. Take that one step further to where we are today – in the midst of a pandemic. Will there be shows? If so, what are the restrictions and guidelines? What if the show goes virtual? Will there be an alternative show if it does cancel? It’s easy to get spun out in short order when there are so many unknowns. Depending on which state you’re in, the answers to these questions can vary dramatically. It’s truly not a one size fits all answer. Think back to summer and how hard our respective breed organizations fought on behalf of breeders and their juniors to provide them with an opportunity to go to a national junior show. Let’s recall the states who hosted their youth livestock expos on the heels of the unfortunate news that their state fair had cancelled. The stand alone shows that hosted hundreds of head of livestock throughout the summer. These events didn’t just pop up and happen following a social media post. There are behind-the-scenes organizers who spent countless hours fundraising, preparing and executing these opportunities. Yes, they made you wear a mask, which I’m hopeful that you did in a somewhat willing attitude, for nothing more than the sake of the “show going on”. Believe me, being the mask police wasn’t in their Top 1,000 list of things that they ever wanted to do at a livestock show. With the time and effort that was already put forth though, this was a detail that couldn’t be overlooked to ensure that the event could happen … and most importantly, finish. Being a part of a few events that took place with masks and social distancing, I must say that the most powerful thing that exhibitors and their family
could do is show their respect for the process and say a quick thank you. As a show manager, there were things that were actually simpler in executing a show during a pandemic. Some of the things that we have become so accustomed to at shows are luxuries, not privileges. So, when things go back to “normal” I encourage you to not forget how lucky we are to have livestock shows, and that we can probably get by without those extra couple of feet of space to lay out the spread of tables and crock-pots. One thing that, in my opinion, should happen at the beginning of every show is 1) a prayer and 2) our national anthem. While these two things are always very special, they hit a little different right now. In the very beginning of this I spoke about how everything is political. If the year 2020 has taught us anything, it drives that point home – politics are everywhere. Right down to whether or not we can have livestock shows. The world belongs to those that show up. I encourage you to do just that … SHOW UP! Let the world know that maskwearing, no handshakes, and staying locked in our homes forever is definitely NOT our “new normal”. Rather, it is just a phase and this too shall pass. Lastly, I think that the “big picture” looks a little different for each and every person. Sometimes we embrace long-term projections and forecasts, and then there’s the day that it’s ok to keep putting one foot in front of the other and get through your day. Living in this realm of the “unknown”, we can’t plan things the way we once did; however, we can remain hopeful – for whatever it is that matters most to each of us. This has encouraged many to get outside of their comfort zones and learn new things. It has also driven home the fact that it is paramount above all else...we don’t wait for opportunities to present themselves, we create our own.

AGE: Kinlee 11, Karlee 9 SPECIES AND BREEDS THAT YOU SHOW: Kinlee: I love showing Angus steers, Red Angus heifers and White Dorper sheep. In the spring, I am going to show a Simmental heifer too. Karlee: This is my first year to show steers. I showed an Angus steer at the State Fair that was 3rd in his class and I have an Angus steer on feed for the spring majors. I have shown Red Angus heifers for 2 years. I will also show some White Doper ewes from my Opie.
me so much confidence showing. I did not want to sell him. Karlee: My favorite show animal is my steer Chocolate Chip. I also call him Chippers. He is very calm and easy going. I love our heifers Precious and Jasmine. I always showed them as calves in the open show and then Kinlee showed them in the junior show because I wasn’t old enough. ANYTHING YOU USE FOR GOOD LUCK: Kinlee: I have a pink and white striped show shirt that brings me good luck.
FAVORITE SHOW & WHY: Kinlee: My favorite show is the Houston Livestock Show because I seem to have the most luck there. I showed the Champion Angus steer in 2018 and 2019.
Karlee: I like to use my sister’s show stick.
Karlee: My favorite show is the State Fair of Texas because I have been able to show my heifers in the open show and we won some cool prizes.
Karlee: At 53 pounds, I would rather pick up poop than exercise a stubborn steer.
FAVORITE SHOW MEMORY: Kinlee: Winning champion Angus steer with Andrew at Houston my first year to show was my favorite memory. When I came out of the ring my Dad gave me a big hug and told me how proud he was of me. My Mom, Aunt Dana and my friends were all giving me hugs. It was a really happy moment. As a family, our proudest moment was raising and showing the Reserve National Champion Red Angus Heifer in 2019.
LEAST FAVORITE SHOW BARN ACTIVITY: Kinlee: Blowing hair, especially on Red Angus cattle that do not have much hair.
FAVORITE BOOK/AUTHOR: Kinlee: The Friendship List series by Lisa Greenwald; Charmed and Tricked and Misfits by Jen Calonita Karlee: Dork Diaries series and all Hank the Cowdog books. FAVORITE MOVIE: Kinlee: Hallmark Movies Karlee: Scooby Doo
Karlee: My favorite memory was Ryder Day winning Fort Worth. We got to go out to eat at Del Frisco’s to celebrate and they had jellybeans for appetizers!
FAVORITE FOOD: Kinlee: Orange Chicken and Rice from Panda Express
FAVORITE SHOW ANIMAL: Kinlee: My steer AJ (Andrew Junior) that I showed in Houston in 2019 was my favorite steer. He gave
Karlee: Mac N Cheese
ACTIVES YOU ENJOY OUTSIDE THE SHOWRING: Kinlee: Cheering, running cross country, tumbling, traveling, sleepovers with my friends and reading Karlee: Soccer, vacationing, playing with my friends, swimming, art projects, and reading FUTURE PLANS: Kinlee: I want to go to Texas Tech University and complete my education to become a hospice nurse. Karlee: I want to be a dancer. ANYBODY YOU’D LIKE TO THANK: Kinlee: I want to thank my parents, Ryan and Kayla Rathmann for helping me achieve my goals. I want to thank my Opie and Gammie, Norman and Kathy Kohls who calve the cows every year so I have a heifer to show. Opie also raises my sheep. Horn Livestock, Brandon, Brek, Jagger and Aven, who raise and sell great cattle. They have sold me several of my steers. I want to thank my former county agent, Wendy Scott who has encouraged me in all my projects. Finally, I want to thank my friends who make showing so much fun! Karlee: I want to thank my parents and my sister Kinlee, who helps me become a better showman. I want to thank Papa and Nana, James and Janet Rathmann for raising Chocolate Chip. Thank you Brandon for raising Baby Bear. Thank you Jagger for clipping my steers. I want to thank our aunts Kallie, Kaci and Joellyn who are our best cheerleaders. Thank you to my friends for always supporting me and watching me show. Kinlee: We both want to thank every person who helps organize and run the jackpots, fairs and major shows we compete at. We also want to thank the sale committee, scholarship committee and buyers at every local and major show. Thank you for your support so we can keep doing what we love!
