County O has made a stir this past year, he was the highlight of the Embry o’s On Snow in 2018. His initial live display in Denver never happened till thi s past year and it’s pretty easy to see why he had the bu zz going in the Yard’s. We all have those cows that need a little more foot size, power, bone, and overall style, this is the bull to add it! Calf reports have been aw esome with small to moderate bw , hairy, good looking.
Style, Correctness, and Balance throughout, with the masters stamp of approval. Jump on bo ard boy's, he's the real deal!

1. TELL OUR READERS ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUNDS WHERE YOU’RE FROM, HOW YOU MET, ALL THAT GOOD STUFF. HOW OLD ARE YOUR GIRLS?
collins cattle:
Kinder Colby Collins Shellie Moore Collins Cierra, Claire & Cricket
QUICK FACTS:
• 4th & 5th Generation Ranchers • Ranch in family since 1906
LOCATION:
Southwest Oklahoma
years in business: 20 years
Kinder Colby Collins is a 4th generation rancher, who now operates his family’s ranch in southwest Oklahoma with his dad, CA. The ranch has been in his mother Judy’s family since 1906. Shellie Moore Collins is originally from Scott City, Kansas, and is a 5th generation Hereford breeder. We met at my Aunt Lorna Pelton’s cattle camp in College Station, Texas, in 2003. We worked the camp together again in 2004 and the rest is history…. Cierra is 10, Claire is 7, and Cricket is 4.
2. HOW DIFFERENT IS IT BEING A PARENT AND WATCHING YOUR OWN KIDS SHOW VERSUS DOING IT YOURSELF AS A YOUNGSTER OR WATCHING OTHER PEOPLE’S KIDS? When they are little, it is nerve wracking with any kid – yours or someone else’s. But as they get older, more confident and more capable, the nerves ease a bit. The attitude of the calf for sure plays a role. Claire showed a heifer of Cierra’s when she was 5; we never worried about her. But this Smokey steer of Cierra’s (that won OYE) always kept us on our toes. The first show we took him to my niece, Cady Pieper, had to show him. It took all she had just to hang on. Fortunately, he did get better with each show.
3. SHELLIE - TELL US HOW IT CAME TO BE THAT YOU GOT TO SLAP YOUR DAUGHTER’S STEER AT THE OKLAHOMA YOUTH EXPO AND WHAT WAS THAT WHOLE EXPERIENCE LIKE? Last year, Paul Clapp had the showman, Tenley Mefford, slap her Grand Champion steer. This year, to keep the excitement and change it up, he had all of the moms of the breed champion steers go down in the arena with the kids. Then, when Paul Clapp and associate Bob May had made up their minds, Marylu Oaks, one of the beef superintendents, grabbed my elbow and I knew what I was supposed to do. After catching my breath, she told me, “Make it count,” and boy I did! I am so grateful for all of the photographers that captured that once in a lifetime moment. It was awesome to be right there with Cierra when she was picked Champion!
4. WHO TAUGHT CIERRA HOW TO BE SUCH A GOOD STICK? Colby and I both work a lot with the girls on their showmanship. When we sense that Cierra is getting too much of one or the other of us, we trade out to keep a fresh perspective for all of us. As with
Collins Cattle all families, we are going many directions. I feel like we work well as a team, but Colby usually ends up picking up most of the slack while I am driving the kids to their activities. Gates Fryer, Colby’s cousin who lives just up the road from us, is a life saver. He is always willing to help out and helps C.A. and Juan Noyola, our longtime ranch hand, hold down the fort when we are away.
6. COLBY - HOW HARD IS IT TO DECIDE WHAT CATTLE TO KEEP AND WHAT TO SELL?
It is really hard. Colby is not ready to reveal his philosophy on this, lol. I think it is because he is mostly just playing it by ear
7. WHAT’S A TYPICAL DAY LIKE AT THE COLLINS 5. TELL US ABOUT YOUR CATTLE OPERATION, HOW HOUSE/BARN? YOU GOT STARTED AND WHAT YOUR PLANS ARE Colby likes to get up early, thankfully. He loves feeding the WHERE YOU WANT THAT PART OF YOUR LIFE TO cattle early in the morning. I get the girls ready for school and drop them off. Then I come back to the barn and start rinsing. GO? As we mentioned, Colby is the 4th generation to operate his family’s ranch. Each individual throughout the years has put their personal spin on things and, fortunately, it has worked. Colby moved home 20 years ago in 1999; he and his sister Christy started breeding their herd more for show cattle. The fall herd originally was geared for show steers and the spring herd leaned more towards replacements. Colby is great at sensing opportunity and, luckily, neither one of us is afraid of change. So, as things need to change and progress with breeding decisions and timing, I feel like he manages all of that very well. I’m sure we will continue to produce high-quality show cattle as long as there is a market for them.
Colby usually has one started or done, and then I finish what is left while he goes and takes care of the other ranch duties – either checking heat, calving, working cattle, whatever arises that day. I go get the girls from school. They play the piano and sing too, so we do that first along with homework, and then about 4:30 they head to the barn to tie up heads and work hair before we set them up and turn them out for the night. Since they are all still pretty young yet, we do quite a bit of the work for them everyday, but on the weekends, they are right there early in the morning with us. They seem to enjoy it and have already witnessed how their hard work and dedication can pay off. The routine at the barn everyday does get hard, esMay/June/July 2019 • theshowcircuit.com

pecially before OYE, but we all push through and work together to get it done.
8. HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED IN THE OKLAHOMA BEEF COUNCIL’S PROMOTION EFFORTS AND WHY ARE YOU DOING IT? Fundamentally, product-based programs are essential for their overall success. Marketing, promotion, research all take money. Checkoff dollars help pay for all of it. There were some issues with the OK Beef Council and after all of that dust settled, they wanted to put a fresh face on the program. A young woman who used to show our steers, Stacy Pearce, was one of the people involved with the groundwork promotion. Stacy was the photographer at the OJCA show in Stillwater. She hit me up at the backdrop and asked me if we would be interested in being a part of the OK Beef Council’s new platform. I knew that I wanted to be a positive force for the OK Beef Council’s goals and felt it would be a great learning experience and opportunity for our family. It ended up being an awesome experience and I am so glad that we said yes.
9. WHAT DO YOU HOPE YOUR GIRLS WILL WALK AWAY WITH ONCE THEIR SHOWING DAYS ARE OVER? We could talk about this for days! I hope they look back and know that they put everything into it that they could. I hope that they cherish the memories that we will make in the next 15 to 18 years. We want them to learn how to win and lose with grace. I pray that it helps to shape their lives and make them be hard-working, dedicated, trustworthy women who will continue to make a positive impact on agriculture and the people they come into contact with.
10. ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE WITH OUR READERS? We are truly humbled and blessed to have had the success that we have. We know that it will not change who we are or what our goals for our children are. We love the cattle business and our family, and pray the good Lord continues to allow us to do what we love, every day.

Calf-Feeder Prices Gain Traction
By Wes Ishmael
Even though the long, wet cold winter continued to snarl marketing and forage growth in some parts of the country, calf and feeder cattle demand finally found some spark beginning the latter half of March.
between the spring peak into July and another 4% to fall lows in October. Large frame, number one steers (500 lbs.) are currently priced about $186/cwt., suggesting an October low price of roughly $166/cwt.
More specifically, starting the third week of March, weighted average regional calf and feeder cattle prices were even or higher year over for the first time since early October.
As for feeder steers (7-weight to 8-weight), Peel says they typically increase to a peak in July before declining in the second half of the year.
“Lightweight feeder cattle prices have yet to confirm a seasonal price peak and may hold steady or even push slightly higher in the next two to three weeks,” explained Derrell Peel, Extension livestock marketing specialist at Oklahoma State University, in his mid-April market comments. “In Oklahoma, 5-weight steer prices typically drop roughly 7%
“Current steer prices are roughly $148/ cwt. (750 lbs., Large #1), suggesting a peak July price of roughly $153 and an October price near $148,” Peel says. “Futures markets are more optimistic than that for feeder markets with current Feeder Cattle futures prices for the summer and fall well above these levels. This may provide a pricing opportunity for summer or fall feeder sales.”
Lingering weather impacts could even provide one more seasonal surge to cash fed cattle prices, Peel says. The average dressed steer weight was 7 lbs. lighter than a year earlier at 865 lbs., for the week ending Mar. 31, according to USDA’s Actual Slaughter Under Federal Inspection report. The average dressed heifer weight was 8 lbs. lighter at 806 lbs. For February, federally inspected slaughter of 2.45 million head was 1.56% more year over year, according to the monthly Livestock Slaughter report. Average dressed steer weights were 6 lbs. less than a year earlier at 879 lbs. Average dressed heifer weights were 11 lbs. less at 819 lbs. “Normal seasonality of fed prices in-
dicates that fed prices will likely drop to +/- $120/cwt. for fall lows,” Peel says. The latest World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) project the 5-area Direct fed steer price at $122$126/cwt. in the second quarter; $111$119 in the third and $109-$119 in the fourth. Pork Promise If recently surging and volatile Lean Hog futures prices are any indication, then more beef price support could emerge based on expectations of improved international pork demand, stemming from African Swine Fever in China and Southeast Asia. Rabobank expects Chinese pork production losses of 25% to 35% this year. Analysts there note the loss is at least 30% larger than annual U.S. pork production and nearly as large as Europe’s annual pork supply. Rabobank also expects production losses to exceed 10% in Vietnam, the world’s fifth largest pork-producing country and a significant supplier to China.
of January through the end of March, increasing from about $40/cwt. to $53. During the same time, he says 90%-lean beef prices increased 10% to $218/cwt., while the cow-beef cutout climbed by 7.7%. “The rally in cow prices has come in the face of historically large slaughter,” Anderson explains, in the latest issue of In the Cattle Markets. “Dairy cow slaughter exceeded 70,000 per week for that last 5 weeks. The 72,700 head sent to market the first week of March was the largest weekly dairy cow slaughter since 1986. Some readers might remember the Dairy Herd Buyout program that
packing capacity eroded amid the 20102012 drought. “Presumably, dairy cow marketings will decline later in the year as increased culling has an effect on milk production and prices,” Anderson says. “Some milk market recovery should lead to higher milk prices and slower culling rates. The slowing rate of growth of the beef cow herd should slow beef cow marketings. The combination of slowing culling, limiting the growth in supplies, should provide some price support.” Static Numbers
“Current steer prices are roughly $148/cwt.
“African Swine Fever has spread to every province in mainland China and is now affecting an estimated 150-200 million pigs,” says Christine McCracken, RaboResearch animal protein analyst. “The expected 30% loss in pork production is unprecedented. These losses cannot easily be replaced by other proteins like chicken, duck and seafood, nor will larger pork imports be able to fully offset the loss.” Cull Cow Prices Gain
contributed to large dairy cow slaughter in 1986. Beef cow slaughter dropped below last year’s levels by mid-March; 53,000 head compared to 56,000 head this time last year. Total beef and dairy cow slaughter is the most since droughtforced movement in 2012-2013.”
Along the way, David Anderson, Extension livestock economist at Texas A&M University notes Southern Plains cull cow prices increased 32% from the end
Anderson points out new cow packing capacity in the Northwest is helping boost cull cow prices higher further north than in the Southern Plains, where
Peering further ahead, analysts with the Livestock Marketing Information Center (LMIC) say the liquidation phase of the current cattle cycle appears to be atypical. In the latest Livestock Monitor, LMIC analysts explain cyclical herd growth since the 1970’s lasts 5-7 years, with peak numbers usually fewer than the apex of the previous cycle. The liquidation phases usually takes 5-8 years. Currently, they estimate beef cow numbers at the beginning of next year to be about the same as this year; then a negligible reduction.
“Even though cow-calf returns are dramatically below a few years ago, most producers are not faced with financial stress to force substantial breeding herd reductions,” LMIC analysts say. “That is a contrast to most recent cattle cycles. In several areas of the U.S. drought, floods, and/or brutal winter weather has impacted and could continue to ratchet down cowherd numbers. But the economics suggest the most modest cyclical herd downturn since the 1958-67 inventory cycle.” Sign up for Wes’ free daily market podcast at www.cattlecurrent.com

PROFESSOR to PRODUCER
Nutrition For Cows In The Summer of 2019 The winter of 2019 was hard on beef cows. Far too many cows entered spring thinner, in lower body condition score (BCS) than normal. Even my cows that had all of the hay they wanted at all times and were supplemented with soyhulls lost a little more BCS than normal (that said my cows are always in a high BCS, probably higher than necessary). The cold, wet winter and spring meant cow energy requirements were higher than in many years. The problem with entering spring/summer in lower BCS is that rebreeding success will be lower. Cows should be in a high 5, 6 or low 7 BCS if first estrus is to come early and conception is in tight synchrony. I guess I am one of the lucky ones as my cows cycled early, and estrus exhibition was closely grouped. I was fortunate
to have the use of an AI bull for natural mating; which will help to keep the cows expected calving in 2020 within a tight time span. This is one management technique often overlooked. If cows are lower in BCS than desired, forego AI and turn the bull in early to tighten up the calving interval. Natural mating seems to get more cows bred when estrus exhibition is low. Another problem in 2019 is pasture condition is not as optimal as many producers desire. Many producers felt the need to turn cows to pasture too soon because of the wet, rain-soaked spring and mud lots. Turning cows to pasture before the grass is (was) ready (the cool, wet spring delayed grass growth) and while
the soil was too wet to maintain sod formation has decreased pasture productivity. Low pasture growth equals slower return to optimal cow BCS and lower or strung out conception rates. Normal early spring grass is low in dry matter and cow supplementation should include an energy supplement and/or increased dry matter (DM) intake. Providing supplemental hay (if hay is available) will increase DM intake. Providing supplemental shelled corn, soyhulls or distillers grain(DGS) will increase energy. A 1400 lb. cow in early lactation requires 25-27 pounds of daily DM intake and 14-17 lb. of TDN:day. It is hard for a cow in early spring, grazing washy grass at 80+% moisture to consume adequate energy

to increase BCS, cycle and conceive. To fulfill her DM/ TDN requirements, she must consume 125 pounds of pasture:day. Supplementing with up to 10 pounds of shelled corn or soyhulls per day maybe necessary to meet the cow’s energy needs. The higher the cow’s milk production, the greater her energy requirements. Water logged or flooded pastures maybe slow to recover and may not support normal stocking densities. Cows grazing pastures that were flooded often require energy and protein supplementation. As summer progresses, the DM content of pasture increases upwards to 50%, while the energy density decreases to 50-56% TDN. More importantly, the protein percentage falls from a spring high of 17.5% to 9.0%.
Consequently, during mid to late summer cows may need increase protein supplementation in the form of DGS, a lick tank or protein cake (tub). A low-cost way to provide protein/energy supplementation is to either limit feed or free-choice feed condensed distillers solubles (CDS or syrup). An easy way to feed CDS is to fill a 250 gallon water tank with CDS and locate it near the mineral feeder. As I write this article, CDS is priced at $5-$10:ton below wet DGS. In recent years, it has been challenging to purchase CDS at an affordable price. Recently, several ethanol plants have begun to price CDS more affordably.
different, requiring different ways to fulfill a cow’s nutrient requirements. However, unlike the sow, there are so many options as the cow is so adaptable. The older I get, the more I appreciate the cow for what she can do. aus·pi·cious: giving or being a sign of future success The purpose of the Arkansas Jr. Cattlemen’s Association is to promote the welfare of the cattle industry, to further the education and cooperation of young people interested in cattle and the beef industry.
AJCA
CLEAR, FACTUAL INFORMATION By Josie Wilkins, AJCA Board Member
Along with the warmer weather and spring rains of April comes a melancholy feeling around the Broken W, because calving season is almost over and the 2019 AJCA show season is on a downhill slide to State Spring Show, one of the last shows of the year. However, it also signifies the transition to summer weather, hay season and Junior Nationals. April also reminds me to work harder on writing and memorizing my speech and preparing
for the other satellite contests at Junior Nationals. As I search the Internet for information, I am reminded that in this the Information Age the most important thing is clear, factual communication. So much of today’s cattle industry is based on research, data, facts and the ability to communicate those facts in a clear, concise manner. At one time, a farmer’s word and a strong handshake was all that was needed to seal a deal;
but today’s cattlemen need facts and proof that a bull is a calving ease sire or that a cow is free of genetic defects. How that information is communicated is as diverse as the number of cattle breeds in the world. However, the underlying principle is the same— communication is key. Arkansas is blessed to have strong leaders in the Arkansas Cattleman’s Association and at Arkansas Cattle Business magazine. Conventions are a major part of the ACA because cattlemen from all across the state are exposed to new products, new farming methods, and can evaluate how best to make their own operations successful. It also never hurts to just rub elbows with old friends and see how they are faring in the current economy. Arkansas Cattle Business magazine does a fantastic job of disseminating information to thousands of readers in the beef industry as well as communicating the current state of Arkansas’ beef industry to the financial supporters of the ACA. Walmart Creating Angus Beef Supply Chain Feedstuffs - Walmart, the nation’s largest grocer, announced April 24 that it is entering the beef industry by developing an end-to-end supply chain for Angus beef. The retailer said it has been diligently working to improve the quality of its food offering, with its fresh division and meat department at the forefront of this effort. To ensure a supply of quality Angus beef and to meet customer demand for a more transparent supply chain, Walmart teamed up with best-in-class partners, including Texas rancher Bob McClaren of Prime Pursuits and Mc6 Cattle Feeders. “As clean labels, traceability and transparency become more and more important to customers, we’ve made plans to enter into the beef industry creating an unmatched system that allows us to deliver consistent quality and value,” said Scott Neal, senior vice president of meat for Walmart U.S. “By enlisting a number of bestin-class companies to take part in the supply chain, we’ll be able to provide customers with unprecedented quality, provide transparency throughout the supply chain and leverage the learnings we gain across our business.” A selection of Angus beef cuts from this supply chain, like steaks and roasts, will be sold in 500 Walmart stores across a number of states in the Southeast, including Georgia, Alabama and Florida. The company said the new supply chain effort will create steady demand for ranchers and feedyards, offering stability in the marketplace. In addition, more than 250 jobs will be created in Kansas at the Creekstone Farms beef processing facility, with another 200-plus jobs created in Georgia, where Walmart owns a case-ready facility that will be run by FPL Food.
Born with One Hoof in the Grave? Fawns Die Even Without Predators Quality Deer Management Association - Predators are one of the most widely discussed topics of deer hunting in the past few years, particularly in regard to population management and fawn survival. If you were to ask any hunter what factor is most limiting to fawn recruitment where they hunt, chances are they will say coyotes. It’s no surprise why. Nearly 90% of survival studies over the past 30 years have documented predation as the leading source of mortality for fawns. Most survival studies over the past 15 years have documented fawn survival between 33% and 68%, and many hunters have implemented predator-control efforts with the common-sense logic that because predators kill fawns, less predators will mean greater fawn survival. While this appears to have worked in some areas, in other areas deer managers have seen little to no return on investment from these strategies. For example, a South Carolina study by Dr. John Kilgo and his colleagues demonstrated that intensive coyote removals were ineffective at increasing fawn survival. If predators are limiting fawn survival, then why is the mass removal of predators in some cases not reversing the trend? Predation may have less of an impact than we think. To explore how and to what degree predation may be impacting deer populations, we must look at a population that is not exposed to predators. We can find one such population of wild deer in Sussex County, Delaware.
Predator-Free Study Area Sussex is the southernmost county in Delaware and is a patchwork of row crop and fragmented forest. Like other agricultural landscapes, Sussex supports a fairly dense deer population of around 50 deer per square mile. Deer benefit from high-quality forage provided by row crop agriculture year-round in the absence of predators. Delaware has had no confirmed sightings of bobcats and only one report of a transient black bear in the last 150 years. Coyotes have yet to establish a population in the state but are occasionally sighted. To put the rarity of the sightings in context, only nine coyotes have been reported harvested statewide (reporting coyote harvest is mandatory in Delaware). Our findings suggest that predators may simply be removing the “doomed surplus” – the individuals that would have died regardless of predator intervention. We spent two springs, 2016 and 2017, capturing and collaring 109 newborn fawns throughout Sussex County. Each fawn was monitored daily to track its survival. When a fawn died, we investigated the scene and removed the carcass to submit to veterinarians for necropsy. We were also collecting location data for both the does and fawns to determine how movements and behaviors change as the fawning season progressed.
