Demand—Aggressive Marketing Buoy Cattle Prices By Wes Ishmael
Cattle numbers continue to grow with national cowherd expansion, and various data suggest herd expansion is continuing this year. “It looks like we’re still growing the cowherd to some extent,” explained Derrell Peel, Extension livestock marketing specialist at Oklahoma State University, during the recent annual Beef Stocker Field Day at Kansas State University. He expects growth of 1% to 2% this year, then flat to minimal growth in 2018.
Although heifer slaughter is increasing, Peel says the steer-to-heifer slaughter ratio suggests slowing herd growth but certainly not liquidation. Similarly, in their recent Long-term Beef and Cattle Outlook, RaboBank analysts see the U.S. beef cowherd expanding 1.6% to 2.2% over the next two or three years. Beef production will last longer as the herd moves into the next liquidation phase. As it is, analysts with USDA’s Economic Research Service (ERS) note in the most recent monthly Livestock, Dairy and Poultry Outlook that forecast beef production this year is 26.6 billion lbs. That’s the most in about a decade.
Yet, calf and feeder cattle prices continue to be significantly higher year over year. For example, the last week of September, calf and feeder cattle prices in the Southeast were 23% to 26% higher year over year in the National Weekly Feeder and Stocker Cattle Summary. Feedlot marketing mostly offsets placements “There remain a large number of cattle on feed, but timely marketing the past 12 months has kept cattle current and the risk of a wall of cattle pushed to the sidelines,” says Andrew P. Griffith, agricultural economist at the University of Tennessee, in his late-September market comments. “Cattle feeders have continued to purchase feeder cattle aggressively with the expectation of prices improving moving forward.” “What may be overlooked is the continued strong marketings pace,” says Derrell Peel, Extension livestock marketing specialist at Oklahoma State University, in his market comments the same week. He was referencing the September Cattle on Feed report that indicated more placements of feedlot cattle in August than many were expecting. “Marketings outpaced placements in August and pulled down the year-over-year increase in feedlot inventories, though not as much as expected,” Peel explained.
84 November/December 2017 • theshowcircuit.com
“For the first eight months of the year, total placements are up 1.16 million head, an 8.4% year-over-year increase. However, total marketings were up 0.847 million head, 6.1% more than last year, largely offsetting the increased placements. As a result the September 1 onfeed inventory was up a modest 369,000 head year over year.” Plus, Peel notes that lighter carcass weights and continued strength in beef demand are offsetting some of the impact of increasing numbers and beef production. For the year to date, steers carcasses have averaged 14.1 lbs. lower than last year, according to Peel. Heifer carcasses are 12.3 lbs. lighter. The August Choice beef price (retail, $5.94/ lb.) was nearly 1% more than August of last year, Peel says. The all-fresh beef retail price was fractionally higher than one year ago. “Clearly the supply challenges will continue for the foreseeable future,” Peel says. “However, 2017 has demonstrated very well that strong domestic and international demand for U.S. beef can mitigate much of the price pressure from growing beef production. Continued strong beef demand can limit 2018 cattle and beef price changes to modest declines.”
Demand stronger than expected Depending on how you measure, so far this year, domestic consumer beef demand has been stronger compared to last year. “The June 2017 index of 113 (grocery store demand) indicates retail beef prices in June were 13% higher than they would have been had demand not improved since January 2011,” says Glynn Tonsor, agricultural economist at Kansas State University. “Given this index was 101 for November of 2016, sizeable demand improvement over the seven months captured in this update is evident.” Tonsor is referring to nine updated beef demand retail indexes recommended to the Cattlemen’s Beef Board. They include an overall reading on grocery store beef demand, as well as category-specific and region-specific indexes. Tonsor and fellow KSU agricultural economist, Ted Schroeder, developed the indexes for industry consideration with funding from the beef checkoff. You’ll note that observed gains in demand run counter to commonly used industry beef demand indexes that rely on aggregate data. For instance, according to the All-fresh Beef Demand Index (AFBI) maintained by Tonsor, beef demand declined in the first two quarters compared to a year earlier. The same for the Choice Beef Demand Index (CBI). This paradox underscores the need for the new indexes. In broad terms, Tonsor explains that aggregate data utilized in traditional beef demand indexes like the AFBI and CBI rely on beef disappearance data—retail and food service—from USDA and prices reported by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics—the same folks who track prices and provide the Consumer Price Index. In other words, such indexes cannot account for actual prices paid, regional differences, etc.
tons. Export value per head of fed slaughter averaged $299.21 in July, up more than $35 (13%) from a year earlier. Through July, per-head export value this year was up 9% to $273.52. Calves face seasonal pressure, but…
None of this means calf prices are immune to seasonal declines as the fall run begins. However, it all suggests that prices should remain higher year over year. “It appears strong demand will continue for calves that will be placed on grass in stocker operations, but that will not keep prices from softening in October and November,” Griffith said. “It is safe to say calf prices are as strong as can be expected for the time of year considering 525 lbs. steers averaged $750 per head on Tennessee auctions this week (Sept. 29). “However, as the market moves into October and November, it is possible for 525 lbs. steer values to drop closer to $700 per head. Given the declining market, producers should sharpen the pencil and start calculating cost of gain versus value of gain to see if a few more dollars can be squeezed out of each head. Additionally, producers should consider alternative marketing opportunities.” Some folks have a natural intuition when it comes to identifying value in the marketplace, what to buy and when to sell to the greatest economic advantage. They might not run through any particular equations with a pencil and paper, but I’m betting that intuition is informed by understanding the value of gain Griffith mentions.
Figuring out how much the market is offering for adding pounds—the value of gain—is straightforward: the difference between purchase and projected sale price divided by the difference in projected sale weight and purchase weight (the total pounds of gain). Suppose the estimated value of gain is 85¢ per pound or $85/cwt. for 200 lbs. of added weight. Supposing the cost of gain is 65¢, the potential gross return for adding the value in this example is $20/cwt. or $40 per head. Obviously, the outcome shifts as value of gain and cost of gain fluctuate. Moreover, the estimated return may or may not offer enough economic incentive for someone to assume the risk of extended ownership. The point is that there are always marketing alternatives. “Buyer interest in preconditioned calves is expected to continue to grow as increases are realized in calf prices and the cost to finish cattle,” says Brenda Boetel, Extension economist at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, in a recent issue of In the Cattle markets. “In the current environment, preconditioning may become even more important, not necessarily due to the premium received for preconditioning, but because the cow-calf producer can avoid the discount received for calves with the unknown health status of nonpreconditioned calves.” Last fall’s wreck comes to mind: it was difficult to peddle un-weaned calves for any price. With that said, Boetel explains there’s lots to consider in deciding whether or not it makes economic sense to keep calves a spell. Sign up for Wes’ free daily market podcast at www.cattlecurrent.com
Conversely, the updated indexes utilize grocery store scanner data—actual prices paid at retail for specific beef cuts and packages. International demand for U.S. beef continues to be significantly more robust than last year, too. Keep in mind that demand last year was strong and growing. The value of U.S. beef exports in July (most recent data available) was among the highest monthly totals on record at $623.7 million. It was 18% more than a year earlier with volume 5% more at 104,488 metric

n the next few editions of “On & Off The Circuit” we will catch up with some of the junior breed organization’s leaders from different parts of the country, representing different species. This month, Jordan Monier took a few minutes to tell us why leadership is important to him, and how he plans to continue to be involved in the industry that got him on the circuit…
Jordan Monier Age: 22 School Info: Graduated from Iowa State in May 2017 with a degree in Agricultural Studies. Species and breeds: I run about 20 showpig sows of Hampshires and Chester Whites. Junior Board: Team Purebred president (retired in July 17). Leadership: Leadership is everything, I grew up playing sports and showing livestock. As a younger person you find those people you look up to and mold what kind of leader you want to be. I have also been a believer in your actions speak louder than words, especially in the stock show industry. Favorite show memory: My favorite memory is probably this year at expo being
in the ring and watching a Chester win grand overall barrow. I do not know the last time that has happened, if ever. It’s always special when a breed you raise wins whether you raised it or not. Congratulations to all involved with that barrow. He was at our Iowa State jackpot in April, and that barrow was the talk of the show and the school of Ag for weeks. Favorite show animal: A Chester gilt I bought from Kirk Miller that got me started in this whole thing. I went to Melvin to buy a spot and came home with a Chester. Weird to look back and see how things happen. Least favorite barn activity: Cleaning pens, I don’t know anyone that likes to do that or pay the shaving bill. Off the circuit: Outside of livestock I love watching college football and boating on the river.
Favorite book or author: I honestly don’t have time to read unless it is online sale descriptions or college football articles. Favorite movie: Remember the Titans Favorite food: Hash brown casserole Career goals: Continue being a grain buyer for Cargill and continue raising show pigs and coaching high school sports. Quote: Live for now. Yesterday is gone, and tomorrow may never come so live for now. Thank someone: 2 people. Kirk Miller for getting me started and Dan Hoge. Dan is also from Walnut and I’ve always watched him from a far and is someone that you can sit and listen to and never hear the same thing twice.

PROFESSOR to PRODUCER
Supplementing Limited Forage Availability Once again, we have experienced a year of dry weather in which producers either had little forage they could harvest for winter feed or – due to dry pastures and poor grass growth – have had to feed most or all of their winter feed prior to winter. Because of the uniqueness of the ruminant’s digestive system and producer creativity, there are numerous alternative forage sources that can be utilized for winter cow feed including grazing corn stalks, harvested corn stalks and soy bean stubble, grazing cover crops and feeding various harvested straws, etc. However, all of these forage sources must be supplemented to provide the beef cow with necessary amounts of protein and available energy. The supplements that are most frequently utilized include shelled corn (SC), soybean meal (SBM), corn gluten feed (CGF), distillers grains (DGS), soybean hulls (SH), brewers grains, and products such as Mixed 30 and various protein/energy cakes, tubs and liquids. In a previous article (The Show Circuit, Nov. / Dec. 2015) titled “Bullet Points Regarding DGS as a Cattle Feed,” I outlined many Rules of Thumb for feeding CGF and DGS. While the nutritional value of these supplements has not changed, the various feedstuff costs in 2017/2018 are much different than they were in 2015/2016. As I have written in previous articles, the least expensive diet I can balance for beef cows is MWDGS and corn silage (CS). However, this year shelled corn is much more competitive in price. As I write this article, corn on the Board of Trade is priced at $3.46: bu. The local price is $3.20: bu. and depending on your local basis, shelled corn may be valued at a lower cost, yet. At $3.20: bu corn is 5.71¢: pound and
6.57¢:lb. of dry matter (DM). Corn silage has a value of $26.67: ton (200bu: ac, 24t cs: ac) or 1.33¢:lb. and 3.33¢:lb. DM. Dried distillers grain with solubles (DDGS) is currently priced at $115: ton, 5.75¢:lb. or 6.39¢: lb. DM. As is almost always the case, if DDGS is fed for energy only, it is difficult to competitively price into a TMR. However, DDGS serves as both an energy source and as a protein source, therefore, it is more economical than the combination of shelled corn and SBM. In Illinois, modified wet DGS has been purchased recently for $28: ton including delivery. This is only 1.4¢: lb. or 2.55¢: lb. of DM making MWDGS less expensive than CS or any other supplemental feed. Soy hulls are currently priced around $110: ton or 5.5¢:lb. and 6.11¢: lb. of DM which, relative to MWDGS, is not competitive. Soy hulls are still more economical to feed as a supplemental energy source than shelled corn but the protein content of SH and SC are similar – around 8% to 9%. So, when the forage is low in protein (below 9%) neither SC nor SH are a good supplemental feed without a complimentary protein supplement. When feeding forage diets that contain 10% or more protein, SH are my supplement of choice. As the late Ken Reeser once said “Cows will walk to eat DGS but they will run to eat SH.” Soybean hulls are extremely acceptable to beef cows. My recommendation when feeding forage diets containing less than 9% CP is to supplement with MWDGS, if the producer has enough cows or a management system that allows the MWDGS to store without spoiling. Bagging is a manageable way to store MWDGS. Feeding cows 40 lbs. of CS and 6 lbs. of MWDGS costs
116 November/December 2017 • theshowcircuit.com
61.6¢:d. That is 11.9¢ less expensive than it was in August 2017. Products like Mix 30, cake tubs and liquid lick tanks can be effective protein and energy supplements for beef cows, depending on the management scenarios. I prefer to feed Mix 30 and other liquid supplements as either a top dress or as part of a TMR as opposed to free choice feeding. My reason, intake: cow is more uniform as opposed to free choice feeding. I will always remember a research trial conducted by Paul Sanger when he was a graduate student in the midlate 1970s at UIUC. One group of cows grazing fescue pasture were supplemented with a SC/SBM mix at a fence line bunk while another group grazing fescue were allowed free choice access to a lick tank. The average consumption per cow of liquid supplement for the group was similar to the targeted intake, but the consumption of liquid supplement was extremely variable between cows i.e. some cows seldom visited the lick tank while other cows spent a considerable amount of time at the lick tank apparently trying to meet their energy needs with the liquid supplement rather than grazing more. While MWDGS and SH are hard to beat from both an economic and a nutritional perspective, given current SC and SBM prices, corn and bean meal are attractive. And, differences in local basis may make SC a supplement of choice this year. aus·pi·cious: giving or being a sign of future success The purpose of the Arkansas Jr. Cattlemen’s Association is to promote the welfare of the cattle industry, to further the education and cooperation of young people interested in cattle and the beef industry.

Mr. Bill Dorough 1929-2017. . . A Great Man By Baylee Mangrum - Area Vice President
The majority of the people involved in the cattle industry in Arkansas knew Mr. William (Bill) Dorough. For sure, anyone involved on the livestock side of the Arkansas State Fair knew Mr. Bill. We will never forget the sound of his voice coming over the barn intercom at the Fair. In a few days, when the Arkansas State Fair rolls around, we will not see Bill. However, we will definitely feel his presence, witness his impact and reminisce our many memories. Mr. Dorough grew up during the Great Depression showing and raising registered Jersey cattle that earned him many awards throughout his 4-H career at county, state and national livestock shows. At the young age of nine, he began his infatuation with cattle. This later turned into a love for the livestock industry and especially the youth involved in agriculture. In 1987, Bill Dorough was named an Honorary Member of Arkansas Jr. Cattlemen’s Association. A graduate of the University of Arkansas, Mr. Dorough was named an Animal Science Department Graduate of Distinction in 2009. In March of this year, a great role model and friend, left this beautiful earth. He is now with our glorious Savior, watching over all of us. The impact he made on our lives will be in our memories and hearts forever. The positive influence of Mr. Bill helped build the character of many young people and adults. We will all remember Mr. Bill in the Fair livestock barns telling big stories, having a good time

with his co-workers and exhibitors, or solving the latest livestock related crisis. To me, Mr. Dorough was one of the most welcoming and caring men I have ever known. He never failed to help anyone that needed assistance. He, along with many volunteers, FFA instructors and 4-H agents, shaped our Arkansas junior livestock program into an educational and worthwhile experience. His work, ideas, knowledge and dedication to the Arkansas State Fair will positively influence agriculture youth for many years to come. At a recent Board of Directors meeting, the Arkansas Jr. Cattlemen voted to honor Mr. Bill Dorough by naming an important livestock show after him. This year, in conjunction with the AJCA Thanksgiving Classic, AJCA will host an additional show that will run concurrently with the Classic named in his honor - “The Bill Dorough Memorial Livestock Show.” Proceeds from this event will go directly back to livestock youth involved in the Arkansas State Fair.
livestock auction. He wanted to ensure its growth and continued success in providing premiums to livestock exhibitors. The invention of The Blue Ribbon Campaign made Bill extremely hopeful and happy. He applauded and fully supported the efforts of the Campaign. I would like to close by sharing a quote by
“A great man is one who leaves others at a loss after he is gone.” We are at a loss. Mr.
French poet, Paul Valery:
Dorough will be a legacy for many generations to come.
Funds go directly to The Beef Brigade, a division of The Blue Ribbon Campaign. These funds will provide awards and monetary premiums to beef exhibitors. Bill was especially involved with the Arkansas State Fair junior November/December 2017 • theshowcircuit.com

FEATURE By: Wes Ishmael
The World According to Hooter McCormick -A Child Shall Lead The Way If you’ve ever hit your thumb square and hard while tacking up boards or driving staples, then attacked a post with the offending hammer in order to get even with it – while cussing the poor quality of nails and staples these days – you’ve got some idea of how rational Peetie Womack was at the moment. “I said ‘Out!’” Peetie hollered.
“Get up or you’ll lose the whole bunch!” “I’m fine, thanks!” Hooter shouted back, still crawling to the gate so he could use it to climb off the cold ground. He’d been where he needed to be with the gate. What he hadn’t realized, until it was too late, was how badly the calf wanted to hit somebody. If it would have been anyone else scolding
him, Hooter would have crawled over the fence and gave him a thumping. He didn’t, though, for three reasons. First, this was the zillionth time he’d run the sorting gate for Peetie. He knew that his typically calm buddy was always wound tighter than a busted clock at times like this. He also knew how hard Peetie tried to contain himself and how
lousy he’d feel later on about his failure. Second, right then Hooter couldn’t have stepped as high as a running board. That calf nailed him good. Most of all, though, Hooter knew that helping Peetie this time of year was akin to flying a kite in a lightning storm. Peetie is one of those folks who get bluer than the Pacific during the holidays. It always started just before Thanksgiving and ended about the time the last whistle blew for the last bowl game on New Year’s Day. Hooter knew part of it was simply the fact that Peetie didn’t appreciate the business disruptions that came with the holidays. “I swear, if everyone spent as much time working as they do trying to figure out reasons not to, then there’s no telling what this great nation could accomplish,” he’d grumble. There was something else, though. Peetie’s sadness was so deep at those times and the distance between him and his friends so vast that Hooter reckoned there was no way he’d ever be able to truly understand it. “You know, he was born on Wednesday,” Aunt Pinky would say knowingly, anytime Hooter ventured to visit with her about it. “Huh?” “Wednesday’s child, full of woe,” she’d say. “Some folks are born naturally happy and some are born naturally sad … and some are just born naturally goofy like that old sow, Nelda Isselfrick. Did I ever tell you about the time she….” Hooter was still finding his breath when he heard Peetie shout again: “Jig, you knot-headed flea bag, get away from there; you’re as lazy as your daddy was.” Peetie’s trusty Blue Heeler had made the mistake of grabbing a drink of water during the temporary break in the action. “Any time would be fine,” Hooter shouted. “Daylight’s burnin’.” He could never resist pushing a few of Peetie’s buttons. Besides, Hooter had found that taking the fight to him was usually the best defense.

ne of the most sickening feelings an owner of a show project can have is to walk in the their pen and find them down – gasping for air or, even worse, dead! Yet this happens more frequently than we would like. This time of year, we get phone calls every week from panicking owners about their cattle, goats or sheep in distress because of ruminal bloat; some much worse than others.
We hope to explain how this occurs, why it should be considered an emergency and lastly how to deal with some cases yourself and when to seek professional assistance on other bloat cases. Bloat is probably the No. 1 unexpected cause of death in ruminant species on feed. What is bloat? Bloat occurs anytime there is an over distention of the rumen. This can occur with normal
fill of ingesta with an over accumulation of gas, foam or froth; when a ruminant has a motility disorder affecting some portion of the gastrointestinal tract; or when an animal overeats on poorly digestible forage or roughage source. Most often, bloat is predisposed in those animals that are experiencing feeding mismanagement: being fed variable quantities of feed over varying time periods, overfeeding of concentrates, allowed to consume to much high-quality forage at one time (wheat pasture, clover). Chronic ruminal acidosis, caused by the overfeeding of concentrates or the addition of supplements to an already balanced finishing ration, most often predispose animals to bloat. Whether it is a negative change in the rumen microflora or disruption in normal motility patterns, this cause of bloat is by far the most common complaint we see. We will focus on this type of bloat during discussion in the rest of this article. The clinical signs most often observed are a distention of the abdomen that is disproportionate. In other words, one side of the animal – the left – is larger in appearance than the right, particularly when observed from the rear or front. Most often the “swelling” is noted in the left paralumbar fossa, the depressed area of the abdomen right in front of the hook bone. You may put your ear to the abdominal wall and hear an increase in ruminal contractions, but often the movement is not as strong. As the ruminal distention becomes more significant, you may observe the animal with some degree of difficulty breathing, from a mild grunting to increase in respiratory rate with less inspiratory movement, possibly even open mouth breathing and neck extension, which is most often seen with severe abdominal distention. These cattle should be considered a medical
emergency requiring quick intervention. In the instance of a gas bloat, most may be relieved by passage of a large bore stomach tube down the esophagus and into the rumen. In the case of a frothy or foamy bloat, the gas is trapped within tiny “bubbles.” It is very difficult to relieve the distention of the rumen by this manner. A material such as a liquid surfactant (ex. dioctinate) must be administered in order to disrupt surface tension of the “froth” and relieve the bloat. Many severe ruminal tympanies/bloats are lost during the treatment process due to restraint in a squeeze chute without proper preparation. In the most severe cases, the animals may need to be “stuck” or surgically relieved by penetration of some sharp object such as a trocar or knife from the skin into the ruminal cavity. In the case of frothy bloat, a large wound may have to be created to allow release of enough content to reduce pressure on the chest or lung field. Larger wounds must be surgically closed to prevent contamination of the abdomen. It should be remembered to treat the cause of the bloat. Once again, the reason for the bloat should be determined. Is it feeding mismanagement? Consistency or type of feed? Low concentration of fiber? Lack of exercise, etc.? As mentioned previously, feed mismanagement is the most common cause of bloating in cattle on feed, most often due to periodic overfeeding and chronic subacute ruminal acidosis. In many situations, rumen transfaunation (transfer of fresh rumen content from donor animal on same feeding regimen) can be curative for many cattle undergoing a more chronic bloating pattern. Also, more attention to detail as to the amount of feed, consistency of feed ration and roughage content of ration are all important. Make sure the presentation and makeup of the feed fit the beast and its intended purpose.
“Bloat is probably the No. 1 unexpected cause of death in ruminant species on feed.”
