2016 DENVER GRAND CHAMPION SIMMENTAL ON THE

Purebred Simmental ASA # 2941516 CALVING EASE SIRE SUPREME. He

YA R D L E Y C AT T L E C O .

November 23, 2019

is one of the easiest calving purebred Simmentals in the breed. The last 2 years we have had 60 heifers calve out of him and we have never had to pull a calf. They are stylish, correct with growth, performance and eye appeal. Our cattle have to do a lot of walking, we are fussy about good feet and legs. There is an epidemic of back curly toes and toeing out on the front legs in both Simmentals and Angus. He is the most correct bull you will find. He is a Duracell by Dream On x Built Right. His dam was the Grand Champion female at the American Royal. You NEED to Try Him.

aus·pi·cious: giving or being a sign of future success The purpose of the Arkansas Jr. Cattlemen’s Association is to promote the welfare of the cattle industry, to further the education and cooperation of young people interested in cattle and the beef industry.

AJCA

AJCA Thanksgiving Classic Happy November! Many Arkansas Junior Cattlemen Association members have been anxiously awaiting this month! We kick off the 2019-2020 show season on November 29th and 30th at the AJCA’s annual Thanksgiving Classic and Bill Dorough Memorial Show! The AJCA Thanksgiving Classic was established in 2009 when AJCA adult board member, Sam Haley took the lead and coordinated the first Classic to be held at the Garland County Fairgrounds in Hot Springs. Since 2009, the Thanksgiving Classic has been held in Conway in 2010, Fayetteville in 2011, Jonesboro in 2012, Little Rock from 2013-2017 and Clarksville in 2018. To add more notoriety to the event, a second show was added in 2016 to honor long time AJCA supporter, Bill Dorough.

shows such a success. The 2018 show held in Clarksville had both a record number of cattle and exhibitors. Our goal this year is to beat that record once again!!! If you would like more information about the show schedule, awards, entry fees, silent auction, or hotel headquarters, please go to www.ajcattle.com and click on the menu tab and then the announcement tab to view the show flyer and entry forms or contact our Interim Director, Jayne Green at 479-979-4285. I hope everyone enjoys the cooler fall weather and has a very blessed Thanksgiving!! Josie Wilkins

This year, we are thrilled to announce that the 2019 Thanksgiving Classic and Bill Dorough Memorial Show will be held at the State Fairgrounds in Little Rock, Arkansas! The AJCA board and adult advisors have been working very hard to make sure that this weekend is packed full of fun and success! We are having awesome prizes this year for the Thanksgiving Classic Show. Additionally, in previous years the Bill Dorough Memorial Show has been a points only show. Guess what? This year at the Arkansas State Fair, Mrs. Michelle Rieff announced that there was going to be $1000 in prize money added to the Bill Dorough Show!! Thank you to all sponsors that help us make our two kick-off

PROFESSOR to PRODUCER

Are you ready? Are your cows ready?

A

s you read this article, fall breeding season has either begun or will begin within the near future. In my geographic area, we have been fortunate: we put up some good hay; some not so good hay; had just enough rain to have grazing all summer; had timely late summer and early fall rains; and have had great pasture grazing all fall. Our cows are in great condition and ready for the fall breeding season. Other parts of the country have not been as well off – either too dry or too wet. Great pasture makes feeding cows easy. Less than optimal grazing makes life a lot harder and more expensive in the cow business. And, feed cost represents 70% of the cost of production.

Regarding nutrition for reproduction, energy is the first limiting nutrient, followed by protein, Vitamin A, calcium and phosphorus. Mature cows entering the breeding season must consume enough nutrients to maintain body weight and condition score, to cycle, to conceive and to milk. Young cows must consume enough nutrients to perform these five functions plus grow. While open heifers do not have a milk function, their increased rate of growth emphasizes that these three groups of females should not be fed that same supplemental diets at the same feed bunk. Consequently, energy is more important than protein. Phosphorus supplement can be as important as calcium but in most high fiber and grain supplemented diets, calcium will be more deficient than phosphorus. Vitamin A supplementation is often necessary, particularly on by-product diets and diets composed of low-quality forages. Rules of thumb to live by include: 1. 2. 3.

4.

5.

One pound of grain replaces two pounds of roughage. Feed one half again as much silage as dry hay amount depends on moisture content. Postpartum cows (cows during the breeding season) require 50% more Mcal of metabolizable energy (ME) per day than prior to calving ,two times more protein, and 3 times more calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P). As a supplement, feed two to five pounds of corn and one pound of protein per day – amount depends on body condition score of the cow and on the forage fed. High quality pasture can meet all the cow’s requirements except salt and balanced mineral supplementation.

If high-quality pasture is not available for grazing during the fall grazing season, producers may turn to grazing cover crops. However, several cover crops have some nutritional peculiarities for which to watch. Cereal rye can be an excellent forage to graze especially during the vegetative stage. If the rye has headed out, ergot may be present in the grain. Ergot (a black fungus) can cause abortion. Sweet clover can be grazed if it is not too coarse and stemmy. When harvested as hay, or if lodging has occurred during grazing, molds may develop on the leaves and convert the coumarin to dicoumarol like compounds resulting in prolonged blood clotting time, called sweet clover poisoning. Sudan grass, like other sorghums may cause toxicity when grazed, as it can contain prussic acid or hydrocyanic acid. The leaves and tillers are higher in prussic acid than other parts of the plant. Other sorghums may have the problem unless it is a low prussic acid variety. This year, I have had several calls regarding harvesting various sorghums as hay. My general recommendation is to harvest sorghums as haylage or bale-lage and not as dry hay. The coarse, high moisture stems of sorghums simply do not dry as fast as the leaves, even when mowed with a mower –

conditioner. As a result, the hay is low quality and the leaves may contain mold. Sorghum must be harvested in the early vegetative state for hay, and especially if harvested as bale-lage, as the coarse stems can puncture the plastic wrap. When grazing sorghums, cyanogenic glycoside formation (prussic acid poisoning) can be a problem in second or tiller growth following a drought, growth following a frost, and growth following heavy grazing and trampling. Harvesting and ensiling will decrease and most often negate the potential for prussic acid and nitrate poisoning during the fermentation process. If grazing is the only alternative, a waiting period of 7 to 14 days should be followed to allow the cyanogenic glycoside concentration to decrease. I, also, have received several telephone calls regarding the feeding whole corn plants used as a cover crop. If harvesting standing corn as silage is not an option and grazing is out, then harvesting as hay can be done – but is not recommended. The harvesting options depend on date of harvest and stage of the corn plants maturity. Harvesting green corn stalks as hay is difficult to get the stalks dry enough to prevent molding and, when harvested as balelage the stalks will puncture the plastic wrap. Depending on the shelled corn content, grazing is an option but is dangerous for cows due to over – consumption of corn grain. There may be some late planted soybeans that get frosted before maturity this year. Frosted soybeans can be harvested as bean-lage (ensiled in a silo, bunker, bag or as bale-lage) if harvested ASAP after frosting before the leaves are lost. The downside to bean-lage is the high protein content (18% to 20%). If bean-lage is the only forage fed, calf birth weights may be higher than normal. I recommend feeding bean-lage as no more than 50% of the dietary forage. If you are considering grazing or harvesting an alternative forage crop this year, telephone me before you do it, not after you do it. It is easier to prevent problems by planning than it is through damage control. Quality Deer Management Association Launches Deer Hunting 101 Online Course The Quality Deer Management Association (QDMA) and Kalkomey Enterprises, LLC have partnered to deliver the Today’s Hunter Deer 101 course, the first-ever online course of its kind, developed to teach prospective deer hunters everything they need to know to be safe and successful. “Learning how to become a deer hunter can be intimidating, especially if you don’t have a mentor,” said QDMA CEO Brian Murphy. “Our goal is to provide the information and guidance to make the learning process as easy as possible. While information on deer hunting is available in many places, much of it is dated, inaccurate or unreliable; that’s why we developed this course. Everything we do here at QDMA is based on the latest research, so new hunters can rest assured this course features the best information available today.” The Today’s Hunter Deer 101 course includes 15 chapters and covers deer biology and behavior, hunting methods, shot placement, field care of venison and much more. Fire-Market Impact Fades By Wes Ishmael

After almost two months, market impacts from the Tyson processing plant fire in Kansas—temporarily shuttering 5% to 6% of the industry’s fed cattle harvest capacity—appear to have mostly dissipated. “Certainly there are impacts and additional costs still being incurred by buyers and sellers to deal with the impacts of the closed packing plant,” says Derrell Peel, Extension livestock marketing specialist at Oklahoma State University, in his Oct. 7 market comments. “Though some in the industry were surprised and frustrated with market reactions after the fire, the type and duration of price behavior are exactly what is predicted by market economics. Freely operating markets provide extreme price signals to provoke dramatic reactions to this type of shock, resulting in rather quick adjustments to adverse market conditions and recovery from market disruptions.” Cash calf and feeder cattle markets followed fed cattle prices lower after the fire

as the market evaluated long-term implications. Through September, Peel explains lightweight calf prices showed some recovery before succumbing to seasonal pressure.

maintained indefinitely. There will continue to be stresses on fed cattle demand and flows of cattle to slaughter until the damaged plant returns to operation.”

“Stocker cattle prices are steady to higher from September into early October with wheat pasture demand and other market fundamentals driving the market,” Peel says. “Heavy feeder prices dropped sharply the week after the fire, with recovery beginning by the second week after the fire. By late September, heavy feeder prices had recovered to exceed pre-fire levels.”

Various reports continue to suggest that Tyson expects to have the plant fully operational by the beginning of 2020.

By the second week of October, cash fed cattle prices were $7-$9 higher (live basis) than their post-fire ebb. “The risk going forward is whether the packing industry can continue to hold slaughter rates high through the end of the year under emergency conditions.” Peel explained in late September. “Large Saturday kills are not only more costly but cannot be

Discounts grow for un-weaned calves In the meantime, Andrew P. Griffith, agricultural economist at the University of Tennessee says, in recent market comments, “Producers looking to market calves over the next couple of months should not expect prices to find much footing during the fall marketing time period, as the flush of cattle seasonally depresses prices, which is being further exaggerated by poor weather conditions.” Lingering effects of the long, cool, wet spring and early summer continue to impact calf and feeder cattle marketing in various

ways. Perhaps most visible are the wet and muddy conditions, as well as the delayed harvest up North, that continue to delay some buying demand. In the Southern Plains, Southeast and Southwest, recent flash drought and excessive heat altered some marketing. Along the way, AMS analysts explained the second week of October that yearling demand continues strong as supplies dwindle and fed cattle prices move higher. On the other hand, they said, “Demand for calves has been light to moderate at best, with sharp discounts being applied to un-weaned calves with no solid health programs.” Cattle feeding outlook looks brighter Cash fed cattle price recovery continues to be positive, offering more support to cattle feeders. USDA increased fed steer price projections for the remainder of this year, in the latest World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE), based on current price strength. The average 5-Area direct fed steer price for the fourth quarter is forecast at $110/cwt. The annual estimate increased $2 from the previous month’s projection to $115.50. “If the Kansas plant reopens as announced (by early January 2020), and Mother Nature does not dish out another very harsh fall and winter, as 2018-19 did for many U.S. cattle feeders, LMIC projects positive closeouts for the first five months of 2020,” say analysts with the Livestock Marketing Information Center (LMIC), in the latest Livestock Monitor. “Breakeven sales prices for February through May of 2020 are in the $113 to $116/cwt. range. At this time, feeding out 750-lb. steers that are scheduled to be marketed in mid-June through mid-September looks like a breakeven proposition at best. That is, would be a loss if all economic costs are considered.” LMIC’s assessment is based on feeding in a commercial Southern Plains feedlot and assumes animals are sold on the cash market, i.e. no hedging and does not include premiums incorporated into quality carcassbased pricing programs. For perspective, LMIC estimated September feedlot returns at -$150 to -$155 per fed steer, driven by impacts from the Tyson plant fire. Those were the steepest

losses since October 2016. Analysts project moderating losses in October and November and then positive returns in December. Strong domestic and international beef demand also continue to gird prices. U.S. beef exports in August (latest data available) totaled 114,119 metric tons (mt), a 4% decline from the previous year’s record-large volume. Beef export value of $690.3 million was down 8%. January-August beef exports were slightly below last year’s record pace, declining 2% in volume (881,526 mt) and 1% in value ($5.44 billion).

In the recent Livestock and Poultry: World Markets and Trade, USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) forecasts U.S. beef and veal exports to increase 6% next year to a record 1.5 million tons. Those analysts say the U.S. is poised to expand market share in top markets Japan, South Korea and Taiwan.

Beef export value per head of fed slaughter averaged $298.94 in August, down 7% from a year ago, while the January-August average was down 3% to $309.85. Softer international trade is due to a number of factors, from the strong U.S. dollar to an assortment of trade issues. With the latter in mind, U.S. beef and red meat exports got a shot in the arm at the end of September with completion of the U.S.-Japan Trade Agreement (USJTA). Under terms of the agreement, the current 38.5% tariff assessed on U.S. beef imports to Japan will be reduced over time to the point that U.S. is on the same footing with other major competitors in the market.
