Mill Creek Station A “Little Tuff Rocks of the West”
Mill Creek Station, in Round Valley, north of Bishop, CA, is a “Little Tuff Rocks of the West” kind of venue.Vistas to Mt.Tom, old rock quarry walls resonating music, a red sandstone stage,
and marble dance floor make this a spot where artists, musicians, friends, and families gladly return to be both entertainer, and entertained.

fire eaters, and entertainers from around the country. And, in recent years, the old store's been re-purposed into a rustic, tinroofed interior, with seating for get-togethers, a stage, a movie screen, and sound system. These additions provide a year-round artistic venue, and a stage for all endeavors. This year, the outdoor amphitheater has hosted local bands, including Half Way to Benton, and the filming of a historic dance remake (“The Snake Dance,” 1959), with cauldrons of fire, and the dazzling dance and costume in “Goddess of Dance,” 2017.
Eastern Sierra, CA—An old rock quarry in the Eastern Sierra is transformed into a “Little Tuff Rocks of the West” venue through the imagination and ingenuity of Roger Derryberry and Mary Lou Long. And, it all started with the monumental efforts and tasks of clearing quarry material from the big backyard. Mill Creek Station, once the site of the Bly Stone Quarry, with its 3,000-pound stone blocks, is now the outdoor amphitheater sitting in the shadow of Mt. Tom, in Round Valley, north of Bishop. The Bly Brothers had quarry businesses in San Bernardino County in the 1920s, and many of Inyo County's quarries were used for local building materials. The Los Angeles County Court House was built with the quarry stone in 1905, and an earthquake in the 1930s destroyed it. Derryberry brought in red sandstone from Sedona, Arizona for the unique stage, and mother nature provided the fine acoustics. The marble dance floor, with themes and variations of colors, was designed to capture the attention of those dancing at the evening concerts. All of the events are free of charge. The Derryberrys' visions for Mill Creek Station continue, and it's hard to imagine the tonnage of rock, rubble, and junk that's been removed from the property nestled under a mesa of tuff rock. When the Derryberrys purchased the former Mill Creek Station store, in 2000, the old valley market and gas station remnants were in abundance. Sweat-investment created a stage, lighting, landscaping, and a cosmopolitan-cross of entertainment. Headlining at the outdoor stage includes a long list of local groups, traveling bands, weddings, dancers,

Roger is in the film, television, and entertainment industry, and does film and production work, so all of these events fit well with his interests. The Derryberrys have plans to make more use of the gimungus boulders out back, and a fence will look more like an artistic wave of rock and metal. The couple look forward to more potlucks and film events, and they are working on an oral history project with a family from Nevada. From the sounds of things coming from the stone-walled stage, the old quarry's value still carries some worth.
Long time residents may remember Mill Creek Station, in Round Valley, for the little market, and gas station. Today, bands and artists know the place for its outdoor amphitheater, complete with stage lighting and the special musical acoustics of the old Bly Stone Quarry.

Sierra and Nevada as they can, and both spent time in Yosemite Valley during the heydays of climbing in the 1960s-1970s. Roger has produced a documentary, which was based on his long acquaintance with Warren Harding (“Warren Harding: Recollections of the Wall of the Early Morning Light” 1970), and the two tinkered around with the climbing gear ingenuity behind the “Bat tent” or contemporary, Portaledge, or climbing tent, and created a prototype. Mill Creek Station is still a gathering place for climbing enthusiasts, and local fund raising events tied in with the Bardini Foundation.

Yesterday Ended Last Night! Some people have commented how difficult it was to live in the Now. Actually, it is impossible if you are continually reliving the events of yesterday. It is vital that you clear the decks of negativity if you desire to attract in new desired results. I was recently at the post office. I greeted a neighbor whom had just had an encounter with another friend. She explained how she had asked her friend how she was. Much to her horror, her friend told her in vivid detail. It seems the friend had recently been hospitalized, and it was anything but a pleasant experience. With her complaints and the amount of suffering she endured, she wore my neighbor out. As can be readily surmised, the friend’s life did not get progressively better after her discharge from the hospital. So much energy was devoted to the past that there was little or no room for an improvement. No doubt there was at least some good emanating from the events of yesterday, however; they were drown out by the negativity expressed. We have all known people living and reliving past experience, either through guilt or glory. Al Bundy, the father figure in “Married with Children” relived his high school football heroics as the highlights of his life. The rest of his life was drudgery and there seemed to be no improvement on the horizon. Stopping the blame game, the complaint game and the ‘ain’t it awful’ game requires discipline, and that requires practice, practice and more practice. Mental scientist agrees that what ever you are paying attention to grows. When Jesus told the people to believe they already had what they desired; he was demonstrating how the law of expectancy works. Thoughts direct the creative process to manifest the form of your desire. We may think of form and desire as separate things, but they are interconnected. My teacher would say, “What you are thinking about you are bringing about.” If you desire a pleasant tomorrow to come out of the past, you must plant the seeds you desire to grow. Just like you must be friendly if you, want a friend you must feed the positivism wagon if you want life enhancing results of your thought. The sooner we assume the responsibility for the actions we are involved in, the sooner we can turn the corner on despair living. Raymond Charles Barker advised his congregation to say, “Yesterday ended last night,” particularly when to not continually relive the negativity of yesterday. Let the past go and open the potentials of goodness, truth and beauty come forth. It is right and proper that only you can do it. Take what is valuable and what you have learned from the past and expand it to assure a bright and glorious future. God is Love and Loving You Right Now!

GOOD ADVICE FOR SUMMER TRAVEL When I was running the Tunnel Air Camp in the 70's, we got a call from four guys that wanted me to pack them to a lake that had lots of fish and very little company. I knew just the place, Johnson Lake. The fishing was excellent, as you can see demonstrated by my young buckeroo fishermen grandsons that spent their summers at the cowcamp a few miles from the lake. I said everything is perfect: lots of fish, no company.. but this time of year, the misquitos are horrific. I packed them into the lake, drug in wood for them, and they got their camp set up. I went to pick them up four days later. Three of the fishermen had started taking Vitamin E ten days before their trip started. The three vitamin takers had a wonderful trip that they'll never forget. The poor fisherman that didn't take the Vitamin E will never forget his trip either, for he was swelled up like a poison pup. The misquitos had practically eaten him alive. I suggest anyone going to the high country, before the first week of August or so, take some advice from this article. Happy Fishing! New local Hospice ready to begin but in need of financial support by Pat West, Administrator At last, our community has a state licensed and Medicare certified hospice program! For Pioneer Home Health Care, Inc., a non-profit entity, this journey to provide hospice care to our community began in 2013. While this start-up process should have taken no more than a year, and funds were adequate to support this, the process was bogged down again and again in the unpredictable state and federal bureaucracy. Meanwhile, over these past four years, Pioneer opened our hearts and provided care to those who would truly have been hospice patients, caring for them instead under the home health program and sometimes for free. As a result, all start-up financial reserves were consumed in covering costs of these four years of care. Our hospice care focus is to ensure comfort during life’s final stages, by managing complex symptoms and offering consistent emotional, physical, spiritual and practical support in the comfort, privacy and familiarity of home. When someone you love has an advanced life-limiting illness, our hospice team will be there to offer options that maximize comfort and maintain dignity. Hospice treats the person instead of the disease; focuses on the whole family instead of just the individual; and emphasizes quality of life instead of its duration. Hospice care allows terminally ill individuals and their families to experience the end of life together in the comfort and security of a home setting. After receiving a terminal diagnosis, it can take 3-6 months to progress through distinct stages – physical, emotional and spiritual. Ideally, our hospice team would like to escort the individual and family through this entire process. Hospice works with each individual’s primary physician while also having a medical director available as a consultant and resource. Our primary team members also include the nurse, chaplain, social worker, aide and volunteer. When needed, physical and occupational therapy is available to make the day to day activities safe and less stressful for patient and family. Now, at the point of being able to provide this special care under our new hospice program, Pioneer is in need of financial support to cover initial care costs. We are making a plea for any and all donations – large and small – which can be brought or mailed to our office at 363 Academy Avenue. These donations are tax deductible.
