Obsidian Fabrication Over-built in the USA
Obsidian Fabrication's owner, Shane McNulty, is doing some oldschool metal work at his shop in Bishop, CA. Custom work and over-building for seamless efficiency, and fabricating off-road vehicles are stock-and-trade in McNulty's world. By Christina Reed, The Hired Pen
Eastern Sierra, CA—It's simply not true that Americans don't make things the old-fashioned way anymore. It's also not true, not everything can be figured out with the use of a computer. There are people, like Shane McNulty, owner of Obsidian Fabrication, in Bishop, CA, and he fabricates and invents, and then creates or manufactures metal parts into something else every day at his shop. And, in his line of work, his motto is “over-build,” dispelling the notion that jobs are slapped together with little thought to the quality of materials or craftsmanship.

Stacks of metal sheeting, poles, tubes, and nuts and bolts line McNulty's shop, and while someone else might see a lot of raw or semi-finished heavy metal sitting around, McNulty sees the off-road suspension of the yellow, 1970s Volkswagon coming to life. A big part of his work involves anticipating problems, and designing to build around those issues. “It's being able to build what people want,” he says. “I love figuring things out.” “Functionality is everything.” However, McNulty adds, “Being able to envision an end product” is the real trick to fabrication. And, perfection in his world means “everything should look seamless.”He laughs. “It's American made and high quality.” From the “Bat Cave,” as the family calls the shop, McNulty does a kind of work that no one really ventures into these days. Actions like cutting, machining, bending, forming, welding, stamping, folding, punching, shearing, and assembling are the stock-and-trade of his shop, and off-road vehicles involve the majority of his projects, and custom work. He has first-hand experience with racing mountain bikes, motorcycles, and ultra-tough, four-wheel drive machines meant for the extreme desert races, like the “King of the Hammers,” a race combining high speed (100 mph) desert racing and crawling over rocks at the Means Dry Lake in Johnson Valley, CA. “I love off-road, and I knew I'd never make enough [money] to do this, so I figured I'd do it myself,” McNulty says. “A desk job would drive me insane.” “I spent a ton of Shane McNulty holds on to an offtime learning,” as he road part he's welded together from other parts, and in the fabricating in- describes the schooldustry, Obsidian Fabrication is in a ing involved in the art niche of its own in the Eastern Sierra. of welding and metal Photos by The Hired Pen

fabricating. He credits his grandfather's, Dan Pool, molding business, Cal Tron, with gaining the ingenuity and innovative mind-set for problem solving, and work experience. He also learned fabricating skills, inside and outside of the classroom, with a teacher, Mike Queyrel. And, he's picked up automotive expertise, locally, from Tim Miller. McNulty plans on using all of the information he's assembled over the years, and the “tons of trial-and-error,” and “getting to where I have production parts” in the future. “Then, I can do more custom work.” Eventually, he's envisioning “setting up rear ends and differentials” in his shop. He knows it is a niche in his small town, and he'd like to fabricate his way into another division of his nine-year-old company. He also is a coach for the local hockey teams, and enjoys watching his daughters and the kids skating around at the rink. He's working with the hockey players on learning what their individual advantages are, like being quick to see how to get around your opponents. Coaching hockey seems a lot like McNulty's off-road VW project, there's nothing readymade about it, and like his work, there's lots of “teachable moments.”

Sportsman’s Corner by Duane Rossi
GOLDEN TROUT I know of no other species of trout that has more color variation than the golden trout. As you can see from this photo, the fish from this stream are as gold as something you could buy in a pet store. In some streams the fish are multicolored, and I've seen them red, yellow, and even light blue. Now I've never read an accurate account of the tunnel and how the area got its name. The one man that I talked to that seemed to know about it was pretty windy, western shootout and the whole deal. None the less, the golden trout creek was diverted into the south fork of the Kern. The evidence is still there. I always thought that fish may have come from the south fork into the golden trout, causing the coloration variety in the area. Then, I met a man by the name of Bob Smith. Bob had worked for the Fish and Wildlife for forty-seven years as a pilot. After he retired, his hobby was catching trout in their native waters. He'd been all over the world fishing, and the golden trout brought him to the Kern Plateau. I would take him to different streams to fish every day or so. When we would get back to camp, he would go down to the south fork, catch a trout, and lay them side by side. Bob could point out differences in, not only in color, but also physical characteristics of the trout from different streams. I asked him what caused the variation, and if he thought that they had been contaminated by the water diversion. He didn't think so, he thought it was caused by the volcanos in the area, which had separated the flows of the streams for millions of years, causing the fish to evolve independently from each other. Besides Bob's love of fishing, he loved Rossi's spaghetti and fresh fried trout. He is one of the most interesting men I've ever had the pleasure of meeting and fishing with. Bob and I became very good friends that summer. He invited me to his home in Seattle to do some fishing, naturally I lost his phone number. If you've got a hundred years to spare, try to find one Bob Smith in the Seattle phone book. More about Bob later. Sponsored by Reagan’s Sporting Goods www.reaganssportinggoods.com
