Ace High Country Lumber brings back the home-town barbecue To Barbecue or Barbeque

High Country Lumber is bringing back the Down Home Town Barbecue at the Tri-County Fair this year, September 1-4. So cooks, start your grills, briquettes, wood, and pellets, and get ready to sample some High Sierra beef brisket, with winners taking home a new Traeger Pro 34 pellet barbecue (First Place), cash, and gift certificates. Photo courtesy of High Country Lumber By Christina Reed, The Hired Pen “Barbecue may not be the road to world peace, but it's a start”--Anthony Bourdain Eastern Sierra, CA—Tri-County Fair-goers are in for a treat with the return of the Home Town Barbecue division of the competitions, and whether you are a competitor or spectator, no one can deny the awesome smell of meat grilling or low and slow barbecuing outdoors. This year's competition “fits in with the theme” of “Celebrating 130 Years of Fun,” says Ace High Country Lumber's manager, Jeff Acree. High Country Lumber is sponsoring the Down Home Town BBQ Contest, on Saturday, September 2, and the prizes being offered, of course, feature a Traeger Pro 34 pellet barbecue, plus cash and gift certificates. The barbecue competition had always been a part of the Fair, notes Acree, but in recent years, the categories had branched out and away from traditional barbecuing. “We're taking it back to its roots,” says Acree about this year's Fair category comeback. “Barbecuing is big,” Acree says. “Anyone can barbecue.” And, joining the barbecue contestants in the BBQ Zone is Traeger's field representative, who will be giving some grilling and cooking tips, along with demonstrations and public sampling of the barbecued foods. There will be live music, and dollar beer, and the choice of meat, beef brisket, is making the old-school competitors very happy.

We can thank the Arawak, indigenous people of South America, for the word barbacoa, basically meaning a wooden structure for cooking. However, humans have been grilling food for probably 1.8 million years. During pre-colonial times roasting or grilling meats on a stick, or rod was one way of dealing with tough cuts of meat, and even tougher hogs. As the decades went by, different parts of the country and world dealt with their cooking spices, rubs, sauces, and techniques in response to what kinds of meats were readily available. Southern barbecuing features pork, and sweet and tangy rubs and sauces, while the Texans like their beef brisket, cowboy-style, slow cooked over mesquite wood, with sparse seasoning or Mexican flavors. Order barbecue in Alabama, and the pork will come with their white sauce of mayonnaise, apple-cider vinegar, lemon juice and horseradish. Then, there are Kansas City's infamous railroad and livestock districts, with more than 100 barbecue restaurants, this town is considered the world-capital of barbecue, with the smoked meats, in a heavy peppery sauce. We can all raise our forks and knives to praise the pioneers of barbecuing in America, and some well-known products of every summer gathering and celebration. Edward Kingsford, a relative of Henry Ford's, invented the charcoal briquettes, and came up with the idea while working for Ford at his assembly plant. Kingsford noticed the left-over wooden pieces, and thought of an assembly-line for charcoal bits, which then could be sold at Ford dealerships. George Stephen, who worked for the Weber Brothers welding twin spheres into metal buoys, saw the first Weber-Stephen barbecue, a buoy with three legs and a lid, come into the world. The thing was so funny looking, the neighbors named it “Sputnik.” Then, in 1954, the LazyMan Model AP was unveiled for the barbecuing world to wonder at, and the first portable gas grill flamed into existence. Much of America didn't have barbecues in the 1950s, so the seasoned (pardon the pun) grill High Country Lumber, Bishop and Mammoth Lakes, have a big masters were no doubt using ovens, selection of barbecuing accessories, spices, rubs, and sauces, pits, spits, and good old-fashioned including kinds of seasonings for all of the different types of wood fires to get er' done.... regional barbecue flavors. The Use of Mind

by the Rev. Walt Sharer Minister / Practioner-Bishop Church of Religious Science

The Privileged Few We have all heard or read about what we call gifted individuals. With people like Einstein, Edison and visionaries like Emerson, Holmes, and Eddy, it would seem that they have a greater degree of intelligence than others, or as some have said, ‘They were born under a lucky star.’ The Bible and countless other documents tell us that God is no respecter of persons. We have in our present generation people like Bill Gates, Zuckerburg and technology gurus. Are they special or gifted beyond the reach of the average Joe? The answer is NO. They had an idea and capitalized on it. God didn’t pick out favorites to succeed. They utilized a principle of success made famous by Robert Schuler when he said, “Find a need and fill it.” Most of the technology billionaires on the list of wealthiest people on earth were not looking for riches when they practiced innovation in their field. The Bible says to seek first the Kingdom of God and all things will be added unto you. What is God but the Creator and his Kingdom, but the realm of creativity. These individuals took their idea to fruition, and were rewarded with riches. They didn’t look upon themselves as special cases or privileged. They had the strength to persevere through the trials and tribulations of developing there idea. New ideas and innovations don’t just come to a few. Almost simultaneously to Alexander Grahams Bell’s application for a patent on the telephone, two or more similar applications were being filed in different locations by other inventors. We have heard the saying of, ”An idea whose time has come.” Ideas are unique to a few people. We all have them. An inventors organization has stated that most people have ideas and concepts they have never shared or even explored. Who knows who is the next innovator? I was sharing this idea with a friend and he said, “We can’t all be billionaires, can we?” I responded with the question, “Why Not?” There is no rule telling us that some must be poor and some rich. God is not a hoarder of good. There is plenty to go around, and there is no age limit for receiving great ideas, but you do have to listen and be prepared to act. An idea whose time has come will open doors you may never have thought of. Bill Gates stated that is not the money that motivated him, but the excitement of discovery. Edison and Tesla saw how they could benefit the world with their ideas. The competition about direct and indirect current only expanded when egos became evolved. The greatest benefit of listening to the still, small voice within is your own valuation. You are unique and valuable to the world. You have the same access to great ideas as anyone. Without you the world would not be complete. I need you and you need me. If we don’t love each other, its going to be a long, unhappy trip. God is Love and Loving You Right Now!

A few years back, in the early 60's, when it wasn't uncommon to occasionally see a condor. A good friend of mine shot a buck in the Honeybee area. When he came back with a mule the next day, he found five condors that had gorged themselves to the point of flightlessness. They were standing around what was left of the deer with their wings held in the air. I rode up and looked at the tracks, they were just like turkey tracks only three times as big. Fast forward 25 years, I was talking to 3 biologists that were very concerned about the disappearance of the condors. I told them that the mountain lion was largely responsible for the decline. They thought that was just hilarious, and had a good laugh. I explained to them that I had seen eagles, lots buzzards and even one red-tailed hawk act the same way. They were still laughing at me when a lady in the group reminded them about the eagle they had seen in Deep Springs feeding on a coyote, with its wings in the air. They had thought that it was sick. At this point, I'd like to turn this article over to the man in the picture, Charlie Tant and his famous dog Buzzard Wing. Charlie hunted and trapped lions and made his living as a bounty hunter for many years. In 1971, Charlie was recorded saying, "I have been tracking an old lion for two days. I got close to one of my camps, and I called off my dogs. The next morning, I went back to take up the track. Maybe fifteen or twenty miles from there, we picked up the trail and treed the lion, and discovered how the lion had spent the night. He had killed a doe and taken a big feed. A coyote came in first, he killed the coyote and laid it on top of the doe. Then two of them condors came along, and he killed them and laid them on top of the coyote." You don't have to take my word for it. This is a true account well documented by a famous lion hunter. Do you still think copper bullets will save the condors?
