The Use of Mind
by the Rev. Walt Sharer Minister / Practioner-Bishop Church of Religious Science
What is your contribution? When you were growing up, you were, no doubt, asked many times, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Personally, my ideals changed from week to week, year to year, and sometimes day to day. At one time I entertained the concept of becoming a veterinarian, but when I found out that my job might just require me to destroy some animals, I changed my desired profession. My particular profession, in the business realm didn’t even exist while I was contemplating my life’s goals. An environmental manager prior to the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act would have had a limited criterion in industry. As it happened, I came into the environmental field in the right time and the right place. My father always told me, in order to have a great job; you had to be in the right place at the right time. I wasn’t sure of how to do that until I began to understand consciousness. Ernest Holmes’s glossary definition of consciousness states, “When we speak of consciousness in a subjective state, we refer to the mental medium, the Universal Subjectivity, which is also the subjectivity in man.” Another way to define it would be to call it your ‘mental atmosphere’, which consist of both your conscious and subconscious mind, or the directive and creative part of mind. The mental atmosphere is both attractive, in that it attacks that which is the equivalent of the thoughts measure, and repulsive, in that it actively rejects that which is feared. For example: a positive mental image draws to it the ways and means to attain the object or condition of thought, while a projection of negativity towards an object or subject will keep it away. An example of that is people desiring more money, but having negative attitudes negative towards money will repulse that very thing they desire. An individual buying a lottery ticket and holding thoughts of money being evil is betting against himself.. So how we develop a thought atmosphere conducive to our desire is the real subject of this brief article. First of all, we must understand the importance of our thoughts and words determining our situations and circumstances. My teacher helped me by telling me, “What you speaking about, you are bringing about.” Emit Fox wrote a book entitled “The Seven Day Mental Diet” The idea being you make a commitment to abstain from negative thought for a period of seven days. If and when you catch yourself in negative thought, you must start over. I never made seven days, and I don’t know anybody who did, but I became painfully aware of how negative I was inclined. That inclination drew all kinds of limitation into my life. If I would be asked of my ambition now it would be to make a positive contribution to the world. It could as simple as a smile or an act of kindness. Being positive can be a wonderful way to live. All it takes is practice, practice and more practice. God is Love and Loving You Right Now!
When Noe and I first talked about the sportsmen corner we were in an agreement that our wildlife was disappearing and we were losing our young hunters. So we came up with the idea of the sportsmen corner. Well, we have the young hunter iin the picture hooked. He just turned 12 years old and had his first deer tag. In good deer country you never leave camp before daylight. He and his dad pulled out as soon as they could see in the morning. About 10 minutes later we heard a shot. They caught the buck in the picture crossing the meadow. A while later they drove into camp with the buck and the whole camp was there to congratulate him. His dad and his uncle showed him how to skin the deer and clean it up. Get it in the game sack to keep the flies and meat bees off of it and hoist it up for the day in the cool mountain air. Later that day the young hunter came over to where I was cutting wood and said sir they told me that you really know how to cook liver and onions. Would you cook dinner for the camp tonight? I told him no; but, if you help me throw this wood on the pickup we'll go in the cabin and I will show you and help you cook the best liver and onions you've ever tasted. His eyes sure lit up, it didn't take long for him to throw the wood on the pickup and we went in the cabin. I showed him step by step how to trim the liver and cook the whole meal and I bet he will never forget it. He fed everybody in camp that night, he was the hero of the day and you can bet he'll be back every chance he gets. If you'll take your kids hunting you'll never have to go hunting your kids.
