Eastside Juice Bar

A pair for a pair - New restaurant dining options

Newly opened, the Eastside Juice Bar, on Main Street in Bishop, CA, makes a pair of businesses for a pair of restaurateurs, Luis and Maritza Robledo.

By Christina Reed, The Hired Pen Bishop, CA—Running a business is challenging. Keeping a restaurant successfully going for 17 years is not easy work. But, owning two businesses in the restaurant industry is down-right difficult. “Crazy, as Luis Robledo says, the new owner of Eastside Juice Bar, and long-time restaurateur of the Upper Crust in Bishop, CA. Recently reopened on Main Street, the fresh-food, organic-oriented enterprise is Luis and Maritza's newest endeavor. “Our little baby,” Luis notes with a smile. Eastside Juice Bar is a ground-up facility, make-over, Luis describes, and the corner building feels like “three spaces,” with “the restaurant, the cafeteria, and the bar.” There are inviting lounge areas for chatting with friends, tall bar chairs in nooks for reading quietly from the books (in Spanish and English) on healthy subjects lining the book shelves, or simple table arrangements for getting a nutritious bite to eat with colleagues. Vibrant colors match the menu items, and there is outdoor seating in the shade for Main Street views of Bishop.

The sign above Eastside Juice Bar's counter says, “We don't serve fast food, we serve fresh,” and this theme carries throughout the menu, with made-onthe-spot dishes. “Modern Matcha,” an organic matcha green tea sorbet, is a menu highlight, and not likely to be found easily elsewhere. Another feature is the Pitaya, AKA dragon fruit drinks, with its antioxidants, iron, and magnesium benefits. Luis adds, “food,” is on the menu, adding to the juices, smoothies, or fruit bowls, including salads, wraps, sandwiches, along with seasonal specials to Vibrant colors, matching the menu items, and three spaces within come in the winter, like hot the restaurant create a fresh-food environment at Eastside Juice food, and savory soups. Bar. Photos by The Hired Pen Popular dishes feature zucchini noodle Alfredo, or the bacon guacamole grilled cheese, or the breakfast egg wrap, with spinach, tomatoes, hummus, and feta cheese. Luis' favorite, the shocking orange Sierra Sunrise juice drink, with pineapple, carrots, oranges, and ginger. While open a short time, Luis says “regulars” are a part of the growing customerbase at a place he thinks of as a “second home.” And, he's even thinking in the future...there might be other Eastside Juice Bars...in other towns. It seems a thought they happily see on the horizon.

More Opportunities for All “I like to give everybody the opportunity to get a nice job,” Luis says, and the two restaurants and nearly 20 employees represent a big commitment to the community's workforce. Sons Diego, Emilio, and Leo Gonzalez are also a part of the pair of pair's success, working in both businesses for experience. Luis notes, his sons' interest in organic foods is a primary reason for purchasing Eastside Juice Bar in 2016. Robert Meza, head chef, is experimenting with menu options, and Luis and Maritza balance their energies, time, food prep, menu design, purchasing, and cooking between the two restaurants. Meza enjoys “socializing,” and the “environment,” at Eastside Juice Bar, and he joins the new business after being at Upper Crust for many years.

Father Doug Walker of Santa Rosa Catholic Church will officiate. Sandy died July 13th at Northern Inyo Hospital as the result of injuries sustained in a fall. Born Sept. 7, 1936, in Cherokee, Iowa to Clarence E. Jensen and the former Jessie E. Olmstead, Sandy was raised in Primghar, Iowa, where her parents operated a dry cleaners shop. A tomboy at heart, Sandy spent the days of her youth excelling at sports, spending time with her friends, and happily living small town life alongside her brother Bob and sister Betty Lou. After graduating from Primghar High School in 1954, Sandy came to California to study Commercial Printing at Los Angeles Trade Tech. There, she met Robert H. “Bob” Ferrey and quickly fell in love with her fellow student. They married Oct. 6, 1955, in Primghar. After briefly living in Iowa and South Dakota, the couple returned to Bishop and both went to work at Chalfant Press, Bob as a compositor and Sandy as a linotype operator. Sandy’s linotype skills were somewhat legendary among local printers, as she could hold a conversation, read copy, and rapidly set the hot lead type without error all at the same time. Both stayed with Chalfant Press for many years, operating various printing equipment, including the newspaper web presses. The couple retired from printing in 2005 with Sandy putting in more than 45 years as a commercial printer. The couple had one daughter, Barbara, in 1964, leading Sandy to be a stay-athome Mom for 13 years. During that time, she was active in Barbara’s childhood activities, serving as a School Room Mother and Brownie Troop leader. She enjoyed cooking, crafting and spending time with local friends. Sandy returned to work so she could help put her daughter through the University of Nevada-Reno. In retirement, Sandy enjoyed spending time with Bob, as well as Barbara and son-in-law Paul. She also enjoyed dabbling with computers and communicating via email and text with family, childhood friends, and with her former Chalfant Press co-workers. She avidly followed sports, especially college teams like UCLA and UNR. Sandy was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8988 Auxiliary. After Bob’s death in 2015, she preferred to stay close to home and the neighbors she adored. The highlight of her week was going out to dinner with Barbara and Paul, hitting local restaurants such as La Casita (owned by Paul’s family), The Back Alley, Upper Crust and Perry’s Italian Café. Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Paul Laughon, of Bishop; brother Robert Jensen and his wife, Meda, of Florida; sister Betty Lou Grafton of Iowa; sister-in-law, LouAnn Lovelace of Bishop; and six nieces and five nephews. Instead of flowers, donations to the VFW Post 8988 Auxiliary; Laws Railroad Museum; or the Veterans Helping Veterans organization are welcome.

THE LONG RANGE PLAN Well sportsmen we all know by now that California deer tags have drastically been cut. Sending more hunters and thousands of dollars out of California. How many years have they been telling us, its just too dry, we have to cut the tags back. Now they say its just too wet we have to cut the tags back. Did you ever wonder why mule deer are doing very well on the deserts of Mexico, The Arizona strip, Death Valley, Saline Valley, Eureka Valley all of these areas are in a permanent drought. Did you ever wonder how mule deer thrive and do well in Canada, where they hunt them in 30 below zero, in three feet of snow. You think someone might be feeding us a line. Now I know there are very good, dedicated people working for the Fish and Wildlife and they know what the problem is, if they don't they didn't read the final report on the study they did about 15 years ago in Round Valley. I talked to the the biologist at the end of the study. The does were producing 168 fawns per 100 does. This is perfect; they were only raising out of 168 fawns they were only raising 27 and the report stated this is not enough recruitment to sustain the herd. I asked what they were going to do now, his answer floored me, he said nothing. We've done the study and it will be put on the shelf and someone like yourself can do something about it. This was the first I ever knew that the job of the Fish and Game was not to protect and preserve wildlife; but, merely to study them. Since this study was completed the Fish and Game have taken game off their logo, stopped all predator control. stopped hunting bears with dogs, protected the bobcat and basically turned all game management over to the predators. This wiil be the end of all beneficial game in California. If you want to know what the problem is in a nutshell look no further than the photo above. This is an animal that had a bounty on it for 65 years. It was hunted and trapped and poisoned and shot on sight by federal hunters, state hunters, free trappers and houndsmen. and was barely able to control it. By use of the ballot box they have the lion on the endangered list and use 30million dollars of your tax money to protect it. Sportsmen we have to come together and do something before it's to late. The Use of Mind

by the Rev. Walt Sharer Minister / Practioner-Bishop Church of Religious Science

The Intelligent Universe From the lowest form of life to the highest, Intelligence is at work. At the beginning of time when the earth was populated with single celled plants and animals, the All ness of God was just as present then as it is now; God being a Spirit of life, not a personality. Some people have disputed whether mankind is the highest form of life, or if some future manifestation would replace man, but for our purposes we will stick with contemporary man. Scientist have attempted to explain how intelligence has evolved, as if the amoeba was an inferior form of intelligence than a mammal. The Reality is that we still have amoebas and foraminifera’s, and they have been around a lot longer than man. There are those that speak of man’s adaptability to different climatic zones, as a form of intelligence, however; the mosquito and the cockroach are equally adaptable. Intelligence then is more than evolution or adapt ion; it is all of these things. For the sake of comprehension, let us define intelligence as that energy devoted to the enhancement of life. Despite the romanticizing of the criminal element in the media, the wrong use of intelligence detracts, rather than enhances the quality of life. As such, we don’t need more intelligence in our life; we need to know how to use what we have. We have all known or known of individuals with superior knowledge and abilities. They often have been referred to as gifted, but each of us starts out with same potential, but most of us have had distractions which prevented us from achieving the ultimate design criteria. The difference between a genius, who uses intelligence, and someone who doesn’t, is astronomic. The genius questions life and seeks answers; the other complains his life and does nothing to change it. Enlightenment will change the anyone to the same status as the genius. What we need to know is that there are ways to reach our full potential. Unfortunately, religion has not generated very much interest in elevating man to an independent entity. Religion has found it more profitable and expedient to keep man dependent and subservient. Lest you think I am for independence from God, let me remind you that you are all of God, and God is all of you. There is no place where God leaves off and you begin. You are one with God. Any advancement in your life is an advancement in God’s life. God is making a personal appearance by means of you. The Spirit of God has given you the Power to change, or even the Power to maintain and sustain life as you know it. Stories in the Bible demonstrate that God always has a man or a woman to lead the followers to victory. Abraham, Moses, Gideon, Debra, Ester, Elijah and countless others denote inspiring and intelligent thoughts. Those ideas and thoughts are available to you, but you must pay attention. Great innovation and great advances have come from following through on your thoughts. Many, like Einstein, had their breakthrough in their dreams. Mind is all inclusive. Think and Grow. Intelligence is you! God is Love and Loving You Right Now!
