Building a better life A Veteran’s inspiration, Wounded Warriors and the Eastern Sierra Music Festival By Christina Reed, The Hired Pen
tic recreation events or lessons, for all seasons, is the organization which is the genus or origin of the idea of the National Wounded Warrior Center. Not so far from the past, Smutney's words about the Wounded Warriors Disabled Sports Project still ring true today. “There's really nothing you can't do.” The newly arriving Wounded Warriors, families, and people with disabilities, who once might have been very active in winter and summer sports, are getting a new start on recreating. And, what better place than the majestic Eastern Sierra landscapes, with all that life has to offer? The hundreds of volunteers, who were on hand at the many events, lessons, music concerts, barbecues, ski and snowboarding trips, camping, hiking, biking, paddle boarding, and living life in the Eastern Sierra, are the reason why the region enjoys the distinction for making a good start at rehabilitation, whatever the circumstances. Smutney stands out as approaching life one enjoyable moment at a time, and what early intervention for our veterans and families can mean as a life-changer, and getting back out into the world can do for everyone. Photos from the Eastern Sierra Music Festival and the volunteers who made this event such a success.
PQ-”I don't believe in the word disability”-Terry Smutney, an inspiration for Wounded Warriors in Mammoth Lakes, CA Eastern Sierra, CA—The Wounded Warriors' program in the Eastern Sierra started with a somewhat disillusioned-with-life, wheelchair-bound veteran of the 1990s Gulf War. Terry Smutney lived a solitary, on-theedge of things, and by his own description, “hermit-like existence.” Terry met a new group of Wounded Warriors, from the Naval Medical Center in San Diego, one day at the Holiday Inn in Mammoth Lakes, and the five soldiers wounded in Iraq and their loved ones were able to travel to Mammoth to ski and snowboard, and learn something new about ways to view their lives. Smutney was a living example of how people could be re-introduced to wanting to live life, and all of its possibilities to the fullest. He credited Kathy Copeland, Executive Director of Disabled Sports of the Eastern Sierra (founded in 2003), with the inspiration to enter the vibrant life he had re-discovered. And, Smutney continued until his death, to challenge the notion of disabilities. He told me in an interview, “I don't believe in the word disability.” And, as he was looking at the

Wounded Warriors visiting Mammoth Lakes for turns on the mountain, he said, “I'm hoping to get these guys to see there isn't anything they can't do.” “Only One of Its Kind” The Eastern Sierra Music Festival, in its second year, is “an awareness event,” said Katie Johnson, with the National Wounded Warrior Center, based in Mammoth Lakes, CA. Not wanting to have “anyone get left in the cracks,” Johnson added, the “crucial need for activities and rehabilitation” of veterans, is

a part of “getting the word out” for the center. Once built, this new, state-of-the-art facility (adjacent to the Cerro Coso College in Mammoth Lakes, CA), with 33 rooms, and amenities will be “the only one of its kind,” in the US, Johnson noted. The Eastern Sierra Music Festival was designed to contribute awareness, and assist with the funding of this $17.9 million National Wounded Warrior Center endeavor. Sportsman’s Corner by Duane Rossi
SAGEHEN Sportsmen, now its official, something we have known for years, that the sagehen's population is declining drastically and of course the reason is the terrible drought and the heavy snow winters. From what little I've heard from the 8 million dollar study, low and behold they had discovered the raven may have something to do with the demise of the grouse. At one time there was a bounty on the ravens; but, now he is protected and is free to destroy the nests and feed on the eggs and young of all perching and ground nesting fowl. Just say the grouse is able to hatch out a clutch of young, she still has to contend with the ravens, hawks of all kinds, eagles and bobcats that hunt day and night. Now all of these species are protected by law. At night she and her young will be hunted by coyotes, fox, raccoons, skunks, fishers, badgers and weasels. These predators are more or less protected by the fact that we can no longer use traps or snares in California. So you can see its a one way street for the sagehen in the wild, no matter how much money they spend to study it. The fact that they have lost 50% of the grouse in the last 3 or 4 years it should be no surprise that they have cancelled the hunt. Until someone in the wildlife department stands up and does something about the predators the sagehen is doomed in California. Now you can blame the cattle for their demise; but, I have personally seen dozens of flocks of sagehen sail off of the foothills and land in the middle of the cows and calves. In the morning they fly back to the foothills and land with the sheep and the steers and there was never a shortage of the grouse; but, this was when we had a Fish and Game Department that understood the fact that we must have a predator program. Now you can blame the droughts that we've always had and the heavy snows that we've always had and always will have that we can't do anything about; but, we can do something for the sagehen with simple predator control. The Use of Mind
by the Rev. Walt Sharer Minister / Practioner-Bishop Church of Religious Science
Be Still my Soul “What is your soul? Your soul is that phase of the subconscious which takes your thought, creates an emotional pattern to back up and produces it into form. Spirit is what you are. Soul is way your work. You are a thinker, and when you think, something happens to what you think. The thinking is Spirit, the happening is Soul,” so wrote Raymond Charles Barker. Your uniqueness of being affects your thought to have a unique reaction, applying to you alone. I had thought soul was kind of an identity when you die, either your soul would be rewarded or punished, according to some of the sermons I heard. Soul in the context of what Barker is saying is your spiritual identity. What happens to you happens because of you, and only you. The input you present to the soul determines the output you get in your life. What you think is a command to the soul to produce the form. To be honest with you, I don’t have a clue what happens when you die. I have beautiful images like the rainbow bridge for your pets, but I don’t know. I do know the cause and effect relationship of Spirit and Soul. As Spirit is the realm of thought and it produces the command for the Soul to produce the form. Things do not create themselves. Things come about because thought conceived it. Creation takes place through you and by you. By thought the world was created, and by thought you create your life. This does not do away with God; it shows how the Power of God is within you. We are not responsible how others live, but are responsible for our own experience. Some students lament how as Religious Scientist you can’t blame anyone for anything. There is an old saying that pretty much describes the way Soul works. It says, “You made your bed, now lay it!” That is pretty harsh, but you must remember that positive and uplifting thoughts make that bed much nicer. Many times we have suffered from half-truths, untruths and ignorant of truth. Part of the work in culling the limiting thinking is being open to change. The greatest gift of God is our ability to make choices. If we choose to remain ignorant, God will honor that, but a greater enhancement to life brings a greater reward. Barker says, “He who is able to see his present mind as a spiritual process, a living spiritual organism, can deliberately use it for his good. You are the sum total of all that you have known yourself to be through the years: all your experiences, all your pressures, all your plans, all your aspirations, all the events which have come upon you.” Speak your word, live your word and your soul will bring your word to manifestation. It is up to us to monitor what we are instructing Souls to create. God is Love and Loving You Right Now!
