Hometown Paper of the Eastern Sierra - Published Weekly
VOL. XXII, NO. 24
Bishop Art Supply's owner, Ron Luce, stands in front of an impressive comic book and graphic novel display. A weekly delivery of the newest “series” or collections keeps the art store's younger customers coming in for new reading material.
Coloring books are the new art in vogue, in many different styles and presentations, including comic and graphic novel forms. Pair the pages with pastels, pens, paints, and pencils, and you have the beginnings of an enjoyable summer hobby. Batteries not necessary.
Bishop Art Supply's Main Street appeal is it's a year-round place to find artistic endeavors, just by opening the front door. Photos by The Hired Pen
Put some art into your summer By Christina Reed, The Hired Pen
Eastern Sierra, CA—The days are longer, the school bells aren't ringing, and summer's ahead, with a goodly number of projects to look forward to completing. Summer is a time to catch-up on reading, tend to a garden, and spend time with a hobby. Bishop Art Supply is a place to explore, with a hobby or artistic endeavor in mind. Every display and shelf is a canvas to start a new special artistic interest from, and owner, Ron Luce keeps the business vibrant, literally and figuratively. The collections of quality colored pens, pencils, pastels, paints, beads, picture frames, and paper / stationery are inviting. Combined with a sizable number of coloring books, some in comic / graphic novel form, and the many selections of popular to professional drawing pads, journals, and sketch books, a newcomer or long-time artist will find all they need. Comic book and graphic novel fans will also find a faithful follower of this hobby / interest. Luce is knowledgeable about the newest “series,” or books coming in each week. An artist himself, Luce appreciates the details, illustrations, and the author's storytelling through words and images. “The art work” impresses Luce, and the enthusiasm from the younger customers inquiring about when the newest editions arrive, is a good sign this kind of literary and artistic pairing will survive the non-print media.
DRY CLEANERS M-F 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Bishop Art Supply has a gallery with 17 artists on display, and many of the scenes have been printed as cards. There are displays of post cards, with a return to retro western characteristics, and many examples of artists using uncommon medias to create their painted ideas. Luce feels the store has a wide spectrum of art in the gallery, and the presentations change throughout the year. Custom framing is “busy,” says Luce. The number of professionals in this aspect of the art of display, is dwindling. And, it is important the framing is done with an artist's mind / skill set. A visual example of the types of glass to use, and frame designs, helps customers understand the different aspects under glass. Luce provides this kind of information, and has a real interest in encouraging an appreciation for the arts. Luce is creating digital work of his own, as well as producing books / digital imaging services for customers. The digital products include Luce's unique coloring books of the Eastern Sierra. He has created, over the decades, his own versions of mountain, ghost town, and landscape collections, and he invites you to design the color of things. Oil painting classes are coming soon, and the Saturday afternoon sessions are for beginners to advanced participants. The art classes are ongoing, and they will offer fall pursuits in pastel and drawing. A Main Street business for a decade, Bishop Art Supply adds just the right amount of artistic flair to the town, and gives us just the right inspiration to encourage us to put some art into our summer.

A Family in Need, house burned down Steve and DeeDee Graves were the victims of a house fire early Wednesday morning. This family has lost literally everything they owned. Their house was so engulfed in flames by the time the Fire Department got there that nothing was able to be saved. Everyone is ok and they were able to evacuate the house in time, although their grandchildren were with them the night of the fire they lost all sentimental items. Please help this family with a small donation. The Graves family resides in Lone Pine, CA, and have been in the area for about 20 years. Anything would be helpful, please share this if you would like. Thank you, the Graves's family is very humbled by the support of this small community and would like to thank everyone for their help. Sportsman’s Corner by Duane Rossi
LOCH LEVEN? BROWN? Many years ago Al Crocker came to our school to straighten us out on the difference between and loch leven and brown trout. He told us that years ago they imported the loch leven trout from Scotland, and the German Brown from Germany. They stocked them in the same water where they spawned at the same time and naturally cross bred. So, technically you would be correct if you called this trout a brown or a loch leven. For some reason, the fish in Big Pine Creek have the characteristic red spots like the one shown in the photo. Fish coloration varies from stream to stream, especially with the golden trout in the golden trout wilderness. I'll be writing a lot about that later. In Fred's article last week, he showed a picture of a fish caught in Crowley Lake, and called it a brown. In the past, this fish was called a tahoe black spotted. I hadn't thought about the black spotted for years, until I saw the picture. Does anyone have any information about this type of trout? I took my daughter out for a ride today, she's home from college for a few days. We took along a fly rod, but the creeks around Big Pine are so high and so muddy, we just went home and turned on the cooler. Guess whose actually typing this article right now. Duane Rossi
