Cecile Looney became an employee at Manor Market, in 1975, when Saturday Night Live, Welcome Back, Kotter, the Doobie Brothers, and Bruce Springsteen were going strong, and people were doing the Hustle around the dance floors on Friday and Saturday nights. The Vietnam War was winding down, and New York, the nation's financial center, had to be bailed out by the federal government. Manor Market's owners, Troy and Suzie Oney, and their son, Kyle, were working right along side Cecile, at the register, counters, and aisles. Cecile had worked for BBQ Bill's, also owned by a different branch of the Oneys, prior to coming to the mom-andpop grocery store. “I've worked for one family,” said Cecile on the day of her retirement party at the market. She was looking forward to visiting Pismo Beach, a “favorite place.” When they return from their adventures, Cecile planned to stay put. “There's no better place to live than Bishop. Sportsman’s Corner by Duane Rossi

A PERFECT NINE-POINT BUCK Years ago in the early 1950s, my hunting buddies Ted and Bill went to Bodie to hunt sage hen. Ted had a 1927 Chevy at the time. We moved into one of the old cabins, dishes still in the cupboard. The people who lived there must have just walked away when the mine shut down. That evening, Al Crocker drove up in his Plymouth Patrol Car and said "Come on boys, I'll buy ya dinner and show you a perfect nine point buck." He took us to the Bridgeport Inn, and the buck was hanging on the wall. He told us that he had killed it on Buck Eye Creek, you can imagine three young buck hunter looking at something like that. Al bought hamburgers and drove us back out to Bodie. Through the years, whenever I would go through Bodie I would stop in at the Inn and admire the old buck. Once, after I'd grown, I stopped at the Inn and the buck was not there. The hotel had sold and the new owners had no knowledge about the deer or any of the Crockers. Many years later, after I had opened Rossi's in Big Pine, Dr. and Betty Denton came in for dinner. With them, was Judge Denton and his wife, Patsy Crocker Denton. I told Patsy about the time her dad took us to see his buck, and asked her if she had any idea where it ended up. She said, "I know exactly where it is. It's in my attic. Do you want it?" Of course I wanted it. They had it cleaned and delivered it to me. What wonderful, civically minded people these two families are. I still have it today. On the back of the mount, is a picture of Al Crocker with the deer tag that he had put on the deer. It says "Buck Eye Creek, 1931". –Duane Rossi Sponsored by Reagan’s Sporting Goods www.reaganssportinggoods.com
