The Toggery... 95 years of the West on Main Street By Christina Reed, The Hired Pen Eastern Sierra, CA-- “One of the Sierra's Better Known Stores,” The Toggery, will celebrate 95 years of business on Main Street in Bishop, CA, in September. The Sessums family, current owners, “don't intend to change” the store's “old-style, old school,” charm and function, says John Sessums. Sessums is working with the staff to “offer more western wear,” and also “putting in more kids, school-age youth” clothing. The Toggery is known as the go-to western wear store in the Eastern Sierra, and the late and former 45-year store manager, Gary Williamson, said in an interview with The Sierra Reader some years back, The Toggery fit into small town life. “That's the nice thing about Bishop, it runs the way the world used to.”

Opening Day, 1922 The Main Street frontage, including what was part of the Valley View Hotel, were all changing from frame to concrete, and on September 21, 1922, The Toggery opened up its new haberdashery. Owners Mr. R. W. Eldred and Mr. W. H. Koch had successfully moved from their temporary home at the Clark Hotel to the spacious new store, complete with a three-chair barber shop. Business was conducted from a rolltop desk at the back of the store, and the owners said the store “expects to give high-grade service, at reasonable prices.” The haberdashery specialized in men's clothing, accessories, hats, fine handkerchiefs, belts, and tailored suits. Receipts, hand-written over the 95 years, a box containing customers' special tailoring and sizing preferences, and the ancient National cash register are enduring reminders of this business' ability to represent the decades of western wear well. The well-stocked shelves of Pendleton blankets, Carhartt work wear, Levi's and Wrangler jeans, woolen winter shirts, stylish Stetson and Resistol hats, fine leather belts, boots and Minnetonka footwear, and elegantly tailored women's shirts, don't look much different from the early days. There's even classic Stetson and Resistol hats from the 1960s1970s, for those who would like truly unique head wear. “Alex” M. D. Alexander bought The Toggery in 1961, when a pair of Drover boots for kids cost $12.95, and the town's teenagers could get their graduation suits from the clothing store. Back-inthe-day, towns folk were fitted for Boots and Minnetonka foot wear are classic staples of The wedding tuxedos and Homecoming attire, and miners and ranchers were Toggery, and Pyllis can help you find the right fit.

The Toggery, The go-to western wear store on Main Street in Bishop, has vintage Stetson and Resistol hats for sale, not much different from when they opened on Main Street in 1922. purchasing work pants, gloves, and Justin boots. A half-century, and some change later, it's a familiar view, with free, pretty gift wrapping, stylish perfumes, and customers being fitted for high school rodeo debuts, Mule Days' parade appearances, wedding formal wear, and orders from people all over the world...hand-written notes and envelopes to the “Western store in Bishop.” “It's a view that hasn't changed much over the years,” Williamson said, during the fall of 2011 interview. The store “runs nice and smooth and easy all these years,” and the “older customers like it, it reminds them of the old store.” Sessums' family moved to Bishop in 1969, and he is a graduate of Bishop High School. His father, Herb, is the owner of the business, and continues to stay active in the store's daily matters. John is working upstairs in what used to be the old accounting office space, but has now been transformed into an inventory of classic western wear. Long-time employee, Phyllis Stroud is handling the ordering and stocking of all of the merchandise, and she is joined in the daily customer service with Elijah Muldoon, John Sessums, upstairs at The Toggery in the old accounting ofLinda Jenkins, Trish Belgard, fice.

Sportsman’s Corner by Duane Rossi

SKUNKS AND FROGS We used to go down to Ridgecrest and rope every Saturday night. Some of the ropers down there were from the Southern States, and they were crazy about frog legs. We told them, "No problem, bring a gunny sack and come on up." They showed up one warm summer evening, a perfect night to gig some frogs. We took them out to the Carrasco Ranch, and when we steeped out of the pick-up, something was not right. There were no frogs singing. We went by the first pond, and did not see a single frog of any kind. We got to the second pond- same thing. Then we saw the reason. Hunting in front of us were two skunks. One was on the shore line, the other was out in the water about three or for feet from shore. They were slowly making their way around the pond. We followed them for about a half an hour, and they were not having any better luck than we were. We went back to the pick-up and went down to the river, where we proceeded to catch enough frogs to satisfy our friends. I have wondered about this through the years, wondering if the frogs had some sort of alarm system, which would carry to the bottom of the ponds when sounded. Maybe the skunks had wiped the ponds out completely. I still don't know. I do know that skunks and raccoons seem to be the only two species in the Owens Valley that are increasing in numbers rapidly, as the rest of the species are declining. If anyone is having skunk or raccoon troubles in their yard, let me know, I can help you out. –Duane Rossi Sponsored by Reagan’s Sporting Goods www.reaganssportinggoods.com

OBITUARY GARY PAUL WILLIAMSON 4/17/38 ~ 6/16/17 Loved by all who knew him, Gary passed away on June 16, 2017 at Northern Inyo Hospital after a fast but difficult battle with pancreatic cancer. He was surrounded by close family and friends during his last days and, like the man he was, he waited until his loved ones had the chance to say goodbye. Gary was born on April 17, 1938 in Glendale, CA to Jeanne Evelyn and Jesse Paul Williamson. In 1942 the family relocated to Bishop, CA where he remained a resident for the last 75 years of his life. He attended the original Bishop Grammar School on W. Line Street, and went on to graduate with the Bishop Union High - Class of 1956. His family owned and ran the original Owens Valley Milling Company on South Main St., where he worked until joining the U.S. Army in 1961. He completed his basic training in Fort Ord, CA and then went on to receive specialized training in Fort Gordon, Georgia before being stationed in Karlsruh, Germany as part of the elite Signal Corp. Gary returned to Bishop, CA in 1964 where he met and married the love of his life, Betty Alice Williamson in September of 1968 at the Methodist Church in Bishop, CA. He worked as a chef at the original Welch’s Pancake House, and in 1971 began his 45 years as the manager of The Toggery. He is remembered by many as much more than a retail store manager, but a local man who put a child’s first pair of cowboy boots on their little feet, and fitted the grown man for their wedding tuxedo some 40 years later. Gary is survived by his wife, Betty Williamson (Bishop, CA), his daughter, Janet Fant, (Denair, CA) and Julie Williamson (Eugene, OR), son-in-law, Kevin Fant, and five beautiful grandchildren, Kayla Fant, Weston Fant, and Lauren Fant (all of Denair, CA) and Macey and Madison Williamson (both of Eugene, OR). He is survived also by his brother, Bart Williamson and sister, Jeanie Powell (both of Bishop, CA) brother-in-law, Lee Powell, and his many nieces and nephews, Melissa, Jeff, Justin, and Matthew Powell, Kelly Huntsinger and her children, Carly, Alesha, and Patrick, and Paula Boxley and her children, Jessie Mack, and Jordan, Kailyn, and Kori Boxley. Last but not least, he is survived by his dear friends, Ralph Palsrock and Glenn XXXX. He is preceded in death by his grandparents, Mac and Esther Doane, his parents, Paul and Jeanne, his beloved daughter, Teri Lynn. Services will be held at 10am, Friday, June 30th at the Calvary Baptist Church on W. Line St. Graveside services will follow at the Pioneer Cemetery on E. Line St. ~There will be an emptiness felt in Gary’s absence, but the mark he left on those who loved him will never fade away ~

Big Pine Fishing Derby

A Fisherella story: Throw a line in, on free fishing day, for a chance to win at local derby By Christina Reed, The Hired Pen Once upon a time, in the small town of Big Pine in the beautiful Eastern Sierra, there was a legendary fishing derby. Years went by, and the derby didn't happen, and this made the people sad. Along came a fairy-fishing, non-profit organization, The American Legion Glacier Post #457. The organization took the many happy wishes of the towns folk to the County of Inyo, and applied for a grant to bring back the popular fishing event. And, wonder of wonder, the magic funding wand was waved over the anglers', and towns folks' heads. Everyone cheered, “Wooo Hoo,” and got out their fishing rods, reels, and bait.

The Fisherella Wish is Granted Back by popular demand, the Big Pine Fishing Derby, is happening on Saturday, July 1, which is also a free fishing day in the state of California. The American Legion Glacier Post #457, a local Big Pine nonprofit, received an Inyo County grant (for $7500) to put the event on for the public.Anglers won't need a fishing license to enter the derby, and fishing isn't limited to the town of Big Pine either. Throw a line in at any of the local fishing holes, creeks, lakes, or ponds, just be sure to get the fish weighed in by 3:30 pm...or your Fisherella dreams won't come true. Sign-ups are from 6:30 am to noon, on July 1, at the Country Kitchen restaurant, in the

middle of Big Pine. All derby event / info/ and weigh-in station will be at Country Kitchen. There is cost to enter the derby, and the categories are: Adults are 18-years-old and above; youth, are ages 13 to 17, and kids under 12-yearsold fish for free. Post Commander, Rick Fields notes, “Every child gets a prize with a fish.” Derby participants will also be entered to win in a raf-

fle for prizes. Fish weigh-in must be done by 3:30 pm. Winners will be announced at 4:30 pm. Participants can look forward to “a lot of prizes,” Fields says, and there are many businesses in the Eastern Sierra donating prizes. There are some big cash prizes for winners, including a Blind Bogey, biggest fish, total weight, and tagged trout. --CAR

The Use of Mind

by the Rev. Walt Sharer Minister / Practioner-Bishop Church of Religious Science

The Reciprocal Activity of Mind

2012 Phonebook

It’s time to secure your position!

Get Seen, Don’t Delay!

www www.SierraYellowPages.com .SierraYYeellowP ello ages.com

We must begin with the understanding that those with little expectancy will receive just that, and conversely, those expecting a lot can expect a lot. It is really a simple straight forward idea, however; there are many factors contributing to the results of thought. Each individual has different experiences to develop their concept of expectation. What added to low expectations of good, many times was the religious doctrines taught. Perhaps the problem came from the idea of enriching the church, not the individual. One way to empty a church is to give a message on tithing. The reality of tithing is that is an opportunity to invest in your belief. Some say that to expect a return for your tithe is wrong, but I say, not to expect a return is wrong. When we look at the world around us, we see prosperity everywhere. The grains of sand on the beach; the blades of grass or leaves on the trees are examples of abundance. The only limitations to how much good we can have or experience comes from us. Politicians wanting to have income equality could give everyone the same amount of money, and those with a consciousness of prosperity would quickly inherit the money from those with a poverty consciousness. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer is not an injustice; it is simply the way the law of expectation works. I was explaining how this works to an eager class of new Religious Scientist one night, when one of the students asked how he could make the change in his consciousness to accept a greater good into his life. There is no panacea answer; however, your relationship to the Power within will guide your path. A reluctant and punishing god concept is going to be harder to overcome than a loving and giving idea of Christ within. Everyone’s starting place is different even though the law works for both equally. There are voices everywhere, but the one heard loudest is your own. I am a firm believer in the power of your word. “In the beginning was the word, and the word was with God, and the word was God. (John1:1) Affirmations are a powerful tool. The Bible tells us to come boldly to the throne of Grace. Likewise, we can boldly proclaim our good. We don’t claim sickness, poverty or bad relationships when we desire prosperity, health and harmonious friendships. We don’t speak of what was, but of what is and will be. The Universe never looks back, but is always moving forward. We should do no less. Undoubtedly, we have made mistakes in the past, and hopefully we have learned not to repeat them, but they are not determents to growth. Expect your good and keep on expecting. You have nothing to lose, and everything to gain. God is Love and Loving You Right Now!
