For the Fall Fun of it A 100-year birthday, a Chocolate Art Walk, and a full of fun fall day By Christina Reed The Hired Pen
“There is nothing that cannot happen today”--Mark Twain Bishop, CA—Were you one of the many who strolled down Bishop's Main Street for the 6th annual Chocolate Art Walk? Did you eat a piece of birthday cake with Irene Lammiman, who celebrated a 100-year-old's party at Sterling Heights? Did you dance a bit with one of the many live musical groups playing on Saturday in downtown Bishop? If you missed some of these fine fall moments, there are some great scenes below to bring a smile or two, to your face.
Trudi Lee, Sterling Heights' Activities Director, served up smiles and birthday cake for resident, Irene Lammiman, of Bishop, CA.
Mariah Juhl (left), Joanna Cardelas (center), and Chelsi Hoodman (right) of Sterling Heights' staff, helped make Irene Lammiman's 100th birthday memorable.
Choc-it-up as a Big Success Irene Lammiman (left), and her daughter, Pat Gardner, both of Bishop, CA, stopped for a photograph or two on October 28, 2017, when Irene turned 100 years old. Photos by The Hired Pen
It was October 28, 1917 Irene Lammiman, of Bishop, CA, turned 100 years old on October 28, 2017, at Sterling Heights assisted community, and the residents, family, and friends enjoyed another delightful fall afternoon with Irene. Birthday wishes were given, cake was eaten, and later, Irene joined her family for more festivities. Pat Gardner, a council member with the City of Bishop, sat next to her mother through the event, and grand children and great grand children listened as some of the family talked about Irene. It was a special party, for a long, long-time resident of the Owens Valley.
It was a gem dandy of a day for the fall, sixth annual Chocolate Art Walk, and fueled by copious amounts of unusual free chocolate treats, arts and crafts, and live music, visitors along Main Street in Bishop were abuzz with excitement. More than 25 merchants opened their doors for the afternoon and evening events, and an organic kitchen even popped-up amongst the venues. The Independent Project Press, in tandem with many other Main Street business owners, have put on this lively show for the region with talented artists on display, musicians keeping us entertained, and chocolate treats, with no tricks involved for another sensational year. For photos from the Chocolate Art Walk, check inside (page 6) The Sierra Reader. Photos by The Hired Pen

Name-dropping on the eastside The sixth annual Chocolate Art Walk brought out the chocoholics, visitors, residents, and a few traveling artists, and musicians. The Sierra Reader continues our parade of people who joined in the fall festivities on Main Street in Bishop, CA.
Winner, winner, trout-in-a-skillet dinner Imagine the surprise on Jack P’s face, of Sylmar, CA, as he reeled in a $100 tagged fish out of Intake Two, up Bishop Creek this month. The Bishop Visitor Center sent us this great photo of the tagged rainbow trout, and this contest ends on November 15. Get those lines in the water, and see what you pull out!
Chris Taylor, owner of McMurry's in Bishop, stopped to say hello at the sixth annual Chocolate Art Walk.
Diane Doonan (left), owner of Range and River Books, and artist, Lynn Marit Peterson, enjoyed the visitors at Bishop's Chocolate Art Walk. The Is that Is I remember, as a child, hearing how God, the Creator, was in Heaven looking down on each of us, and monitoring our behavior for future placement in eternity. The concept of duality between good and evil was ever-present. Somehow, I was introduced to life resplendent with opportunities and/or pitfalls along my path. The idea of the Omnipresence, Omniscience, and Omnipotent of God was lost in a fog of misunderstanding and confusion. I read and listened to theologians, philosophers, psychologist, only to come away a bit bewildered. I blame no one for the confusion I felt, but I give credit to my teachers and authors versed in the study of mental science. Through them I was able to see how vital the individual was in comprehending my place in the Universe. I can now read religious literature with greater understanding. The beauty of Religious Science is that it puts you in the driver’s seat of life. Let’s start with God. Where does He live, and what does He do? When we speak of the Omnipresence of God, we are saying that He is everywhere equally present at every point, all of God is present, and there is no point where God is not. So right where you are is totality of God. All of God is within you, yet, the Spirit is everywhere. Jesus said, “The Kingdom of God is within you.” Since God is the Creator of life, there must also be a reverence of all life. All of this is happening within you. Omniscience is the all-knowing aspect of God. In Genesis we read how God looked at all that had been created and called it good. That kind of begs the question; what about the bad or evil things in the world? Back to the Bible we read, by man came death. Now we can begin to see how God did not create evil, but by choice, mankind brought it into being. The powerful aspect we refer to as Omnipotent. The things that get done have all the energy they need to fulfill their directive. The key here is how you are utilizing all this power; if to love you are one with life; if to hate, you have disavowed your place in the Kingdom. Unfortunately, so much of religion is concerned with the future rather than dealing with the here and now. Paul said, “When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; when I became a man, I gave up childish ways.” It is time to step up to the plate and assume the responsibility for the direction we have given to Spirit. Resentment brings ruin. You don’t have to like everything, but you can’t afford to hate. Remember, you are utilizing all the aspects of God to attract every element of life to you, all of the time. God is Love and Loving You Right Now!

Sportsman’s Corner by Duane Rossi
RACCOONS When I tell people there weren't any raccoons in the Valley when I was a kid they can't believe it. I helped my grandmother set traps around her chicken pen, garden and fruit trees when I was about 5 years old and have trapped on ad off for all my life. I have very old pictures of Owens Valley trappers and there are no raccoons in the photos. I never saw or heard of one in the Valley until about 1956. I was working the night shift for Jim Nikolaus at the service station. Dick Distel was a highway patrolman at that time, he came into the station one night and asked me if there were raccoons in the Valley. I told him I had never seen one. He said there was something on the road out by the canal that looked like a raccoon. He drove out and brought it back, sure enough it was a raccoon. The first one I had ever laid eyes on. Since the laws against trapping in California their numbers have exploded. I don't think there is a house in the Owens Valley that hasn't had trouble with them of some kind. They will raid your garden and your fruit trees, invade your garage, dig holes under your house, and kill your cats. They are also detrimental to wildlife. Along with the Fish and Game's decision to shoot hen pheasants they have caused the demise of the pheasants in Inyo County and many other song birds. Since the cage trap is the only one legal in California some people will cage them in town and take them out in the country and turn them loose. They only return and wiil never go in a cage again. Duke Trap Company came out with a small trap that the raccoon had to reach into in order to be trapped, that worked great for awhile. Now I see coon traps walking right by cages and Dukes. The old buried coffee can set is about the only thing that works; but, this is only legal on your own property. In the eighteen years I have lived in my home in Big Pine I have caught at least 75 raccoons and about the same amount of skunks. I've only seen twice evidence of raccoons in the high country as the only thing that preys on a raccoon is the mountain lion. I;ve seen evidence of this on our place, they are not the cute lovable things you see on the Disney Channel, years ago a family in Big Pine raised one as a pet, when it grew up it got in the house at night and attacked the young boy, it left him horribly scarred and almost lost an eye. Well folks, until we get some predator laws changed I don't know what we are going to do about it. Maybe we can hire a raccoon whisperer.
