Veterans Day 2017 “We are a nation of patriots” By Christina Reed, The Hired Pen

“We are a nation of patriots”--Smithsonian Institute United States of America—Veterans Day will be observed on Saturday, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m., across the country, and Friday, Nov. 10, is designated as a Federal Holiday.

A Patriotic Tradition The Veterans Day National Ceremony is a dignified, national service held at the Arlington National Cemetery, in Virginia. All Veterans Day ceremonies commence at 11 AM, and at Arlington, a wreath is laid at the Tomb of the Unknowns. There is a parade of colors, by the color guard, representing the five branches of military service, followed by remarks from dignitaries, and an honor guard with final gun salute. The careful folding of the Stars and Stripes flag in a triangle, and taps, by a single bugler, are also part of a formal military veteran's ceremony, or burial. Custom dictates that hats are off during the ceremony, it is quiet, and the American flag is saluted by military service members, and citizens alike, in union. The symbolism of Veterans Day, and November 11th, at 11 AM services, is intended to remind the world of the end of fighting in World War I, in 1918, and the signing of the Armistice, when all fighting parties agreed to a peace: November 11th, at 11 AM. US President, Woodrow Wilson designated “Armistice Day”

Hometown Paper of the Eastern Sierra - Published Weekly in 1919, but in 1947, a World War II vet, Raymond Weeks, held a “National Veterans Day” parade, in Birmingham, Alabama, and all veterans of all wars were recognized. Congress later changed Armistice Day to Veterans Day in 1954. We thank all veterans for their honorable service on Veterans Day, and we remember and honor all of the military personnel who have died in service of their country on Memorial Day, in May. There are many ceremonies presented at Veterans Day, and all of them offer citizens the right to engage in the many opportunities to show respect, honor, civil discourse, and recognize those who have defended our abilities to be Americans. Veterans services are offered by traveling Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), Post #8988, Bishop, CA, and the above-mentioned full military burial ceremony is available to a veteran's family members. A number of permanent Veterans' memorials, museum exhibitions, and historic memorabilia are on display in the Eastern Sierra, in most cases, open to the general public. Locally, in Bishop, CA, the Paiute Shoshone Cultural Center's Veterans project continues to expand the Veterans Wall, and changing exhibition. Sterling Heights, private assisted living community, in Bishop, CA, has created an Our Veterans wall, for former and current residents. American Legion and VFW posts also hold collections of service members' military histories. Inyo-Mono Counties' Veteran Services are handled by Jessica Allmon, CVSR, US Army, 760-873-7850, Bishop, CA The VSO was created to assist the counties' veterans and their families in obtaining veterans' benefits. Veterans programs will be taking place, Saturday, November 11th, at 11 AM, unless listed otherwise. Lone Pine: Mt. Whitney Cemetery, presented by the VFW Post #8036. Manzanar National Historic Site: November 11, at 2 PM, Special Veterans Day Program, West Theater. Big Pine: Placing flags on headstones at 8:00 AM, Woodman Cemetery. Veterans Ceremony, 11 AM at Big Pine Veterans Memorial (Intersection Hwy 395 and 168), by American Legion Glacier Post #457 and Auxiliary. Bishop: Pioneer Cemetery, flag placement on Main Street /ceremony by VFW Post #8988, and Auxiliary, and American Legion Post # 118 and Auxiliary. Mammoth Lakes: Mammoth Lakes Main Fire Station, and Mammoth Mountain Ski Area. Yosemite National Park: Free entrance Veterans weekend, November 11-12, 2017.

Saddened to hear of the passing, October 28, of Dr. Robert “Bob” Denton, 94, of Bishop, CA. His pluck and resolve to complete his medical rounds and emergencies, door-to-door, desert floor dweller to rancher and cowboy, were legendary in the Eastern Sierra. Well-known in the region for taking his medical skills to where they were needed, he defined the “country doctor” and set the bar very high for his common-sense, innovative approaches to medicine, emergencies, and perseverance. Pet food donations are being taken through December 31, at the Bishop Veterinary Hospital (Bishop / Mammoth Lakes). Another way to pay it forward and give thanks to our animal residents.
