A Tribute to Vietnam War Veterans 2017 Vietnam War Vets honored at local ceremony

Veterans Day ceremonies included a tribute to Vietnam War veterans, at Pioneer Cemetery, Bishop, CA. Photos by The Hired Pen

Joy. President Johnson asked our Congress to “take all necessary measures including the use of armed forces to prevent further aggression,” by the “Viet Cong” (North Vietnamese). The country's involvement became deep in 1965, and Johnson sent two Marine battalions to Da Nang's air base, and the first of the combat soldiers arrived in the conflict. There were also more than 23,000 troops in an “adviser” position there already. It is said, more bombs were dropped in Vietnam than on Japan (during World War II), and according to records, at the end of July, 1965, more than 200,000 American GIs had died. The draft for soldiers increased in 1965, and while many were able to avoid conscription and received “deferments,” many men were not able to avoid the draft. In January 1968, after the Tet Offensive, while the North Vietnamese lost the battle, the American forces suffered huge casualties, and these losses ramped up the antiwar demonstrations back home in America. A brief truce was called in observance of Vietnam's New Year's celebration (January 31), but, this peace would not hold. Some historians think this broken peace, the high death count, and a reluctance to continue, prompted President Johnson to de-escalate the war. And, later he would end the bombing above the 20th parallel. The war would continue on for years longer, although a peace settlement was discussed in October, 1968. The seventies brought more bombing missions, and the Viet-

nam War would be inherited by President Richard M. Nixon, who was in the White House in 1969, when Nixon set forth the first bombings of Cambodia (to stop the Viet Cong in their movement from the Vietnam and Cambodia border). President Nixon sent more than 30,000 troops to this conflict region, and the war protests at home became another tragedy in the war. Protesters at Kent State University in Ohio, in May, 1970, were shot by National Guardsmen, and four people were killed and nine were wounded. 'Another protest at Jackson State University, Mississippi, ended with two deaths, and more wounded. Amid the protests, Congress took back the broad powers of the Tonkin Resolution, in June, 1970, and President Nixon removed troops from Cambodia, June, 1970. The US government in 1972, had reduced troop numbers, however, there were American prisoners of war who were a part of a negotiated peace. It would take more bombings to bring the Viet Cong back to the table, with a peace accord in effect January 27, 1973. Unanswered in the truce was who would help South Vietnam govern itself. Nixon's “peace with honor” came with our withdrawal from the region. The last of the American troops would be airlifted from the embassy roof in Saigon in the spring of 1975, and by the end of April, the Viet Cong overtook the city, and renamed it Ho Chi Minh City. (Sources: The Smithsonian Institute, The Library of Congress, The National Archives, and interviews 1974 to present).

Bishop, CA—It was a simple ceremony and tribute to Vietnam War veterans at Bishop's Pioneer Cemetery on Veterans Day, 2017. A number of dignitaries spoke of hopes of honorable world peace, the patriotic movement in America, and the “gentle heroes,” as Veterans of Foreign Wars, VFW, Earl McWilliams, Commander, Post # 8988 said, of these war veterans. A beautifully, clear pitched Taps was played by Bart Williams at the conclusion of the ceremony and recognitions, and many of the citizens in attendance stopped afterwards to talk with the community.

The Vietnam War (1964-1975) A Resolution for the Gulf of Tonkin began with President Lyndon B. Johnson's powerful moves, in 1964, and became an undeclared war, absent Congress' checks and balances, at the time. The tilting of the balances and checks set off a series of antiwar demonstrations in America, and the ships which were sent to the Gulf of Tonkin for the South Vietnamese (summer of 1964) to check on the North Vietnamese triggered a series of events which would lead the US into a war. There were reports of the U.S.S. Maddox being attacked without a reason, then, the U.S.S. Turner

Sierra Snowbirds? It’s possible

“snowbird” ...one who is a seasonal traveler, and migrates to warmer, sunny places; also called a “winter visitor” to be politically correct with black and gray water removal available, no water or electricity hookups, but bathrooms (no showers) nearby, you can spend the winter months migrating from such campgrounds as Diaz Lake, Pleasant Valley, Baker Creek, Taboose Creek, and Tinnemaha, for $14 a night. Seniors (62-years and older) can get a long-term permit to stay for 30 days ($150) or 15 days ($80). The fishing season is year-round near the Owens River in Bishop, and where else might you be able to fish, ski, snowboard, ride your dirt bike, jump in your side-by-side, golf a round or two, and hike for a picnic or barbecue...all in one day?

Pleasant Valley campground accommodates large groups of campers, with riverside fishing, picnic tables, fire pits, and plenty of room for families to have fun together.

Inyo County's camping website and the Reserve America.com link provide residents, visitors, and wait for it...snowbirds...an opportunity to camp, with reservations in hand. Beautifully surrounded by landscape, nearby to amenities, museums, fishing, boating, hiking, off-roading, rock hounding, geo-caching, loafing around, painting, listening to sports events...the list of things to do here, from a campground are endless. And, let's face it, with the ability to place a 45-foot RV, The City of Bishop's Public Works' crews have begun the annual street sweeping for leaves. They sweep each Wednesday and Thursday, between 7 AM and 3 PM, and will continue into December. Don't park on west and north sides of the streets on Wednesdays, and don't park on the east and south sides of the streets on Thursdays. Following the directions saves taxpayer money, doesn't overload the sweepers, and beautifies the town. Plus, we are all responsible for our own leaves on our properties.

Sierra Nevada mule deer are just some of the visitors to Inyo County's campgrounds during the fall and winter months.

Inyo and Mono Counties' residents only can get discounts for air flights out of Mammoth Yosemite Airport, begins November 29, with Alaska Airlines (10-20% discount); United Airlines begins Dec. 15 (10% off), and JetSuiteX to Burbank, begins Dec. 15 (10% off).

Holiday shopping benefits Owens Valley Hospice Residents and visitors can help the ongoing efforts to fund the Owens Valley's Hospice organization this week, with a visit to the Antique Peddler and Trading Post on North Sierra Highway (Hwy 395), November 17-19. Donations will be given to the Hospice group, and there are other specials sure to delight holiday shoppers too.

“Without water, there is no life.” The Longest Straw, a feature-length documentary, with director Samantha Bode, will be showing at the Inyo Council of the Arts, November 18, at 6 PM. Bode walked / hiked from Los Angeles to Mono Lake via the LA Aqueduct, and the film explores that journey.

Sportsman’s Corner by Duane Rossi

TUNNEL MEADOWS I have many fond memories of Tunnel Meadows while I was running the pack station there. A more pleasant camp would be hard to imagine. For a 20 minute plane ride would take you to the 9,200 foot airstrip. We had twelve wall tents and the main cabin. We packed tourists to the surrounding lakes and streams. Some of the guests didn't hunt fish or hike; but, merely flew in to enjoy the cool mountain air and relax. The streams and beaver ponds were full of golden trout. As far as I know it was the only place in the world where a person in a wheel chair could catch golden trout to his hearts content. We had a very high success rate with mule deer during deer season. With just a short ride over to Ramshaw Meadows good fishermen could fish the large beaver dams and catch 12 inch golden trout and 2 and 3 pound browns were not uncommon. Many a sore footed hiker came to the camp and stayed until the blisters on their feet healed up so they could walk out or they could call for a plane and fly out. Also, hikers who had lost their provisions to the bears could come in and get a meal and order more supplies. The meadows were lush and green as the beavers kept them irrigated and there were hundreds of little frogs ( which they are so worried about today) singing their songs in the evening. We called them spring peepers. Mallards also nested on the beaver ponds and raised their little ones and it was always a great sight. Coyotes serenaded the camp in the evening and there was always a campfire or two with people telling stories. It was always a pleasure to have the Forest Service packers and trail crews coming into camp bringing the news from town and in the spring and the fall and when the cowboys and cowgirls would come into camp to pick up their supplies. Now if you can imagine a more pleasant way to make a living in the summer and fall I can't imagine what it would be. Maybe you can understand my anguish when they announced they were going to make it all a wilderness. I couldn't imagine how they could improve what was already there. More to follow.
