Giving the gifts of California’s other side Souvenirs, handmade goodies, and only in the Golden State By Christina Reed The Hired Pen Eastern Sierra, CA—It might be a little “kitschy” or exude a lot of cheesiness, or even be garish, but giving souvenirs as gifts throughout the year is appreciating our region, our big back yard, with a trade on California's uniqueness. Yes, our state carries some stereotyping, like we are all throw-back hippies in hiding, or we all do yoga on the beach (in the Eastern Sierra, it's on the Tablelands). However, there is something to be said for self-promoting the beauty, individualism, and traffic-less landscapes. Holidays are the perfect time to wrap up a bit of The Other Side of California, while keeping in mind a few things only found in California. Handmade, handicrafts, abound in the Eastern Sierra, and whether they are stylish chocolates, caramels, or truffles by Snap and Crackle, Bridgeport, CA, or Black Sheep Coffee's, Bishop,
CA, hand-roasted coffees and beans, or the exquisite and intricate bead work items found at the Paiute Shoshone Cultural Center, Bishop, CA, or Baxter's Honey, Independence, CA, in the muchneeded big family sizes, or brews out of Mammoth Brewing, Mammoth Lakes, CA, these gifts are well-received by family, friends, and visitors. Word-of-mouth information is a truism in the West. Souvenirs are a $16 billion-dollar business, according to the US Census, and California-oriented trinkets are among the most popular. The small towns, and Chambers of Commerce / Visitor Centers, up and down US Highway 395, supply many mementos and memorabilia for collectors, residents, and visitors to take back with them, to share experiences, and memories. Whether it's a deck of cards with Sierra Nevada scenes, being taken on the Pacific Crest Trail / John Muir Trail by an international visitor, or a coffee mug with Round Valley's iris in front of Mt. Tom in spring, sitting on an Owens Valley rancher's kitchen table, or a team teeshirt, sporting the school's mascot, or a patriotic pen handed out by Joseph's Bi-Rite Market, Bishop, CA, at the California High School Rodeo's State Finals, these keepsakes are reminders of the grand times in our lives.

Souvenirs for the Other Side of California are available at many stores in the Owens Valley, including Eastside Sports, Bishop, CA.
Our proximity to the Mexican border has given the Golden State the distinction of being the best place to taste authentic Mexican food, and find Tapatio packets, available as a portable hot sauce (good for backpacking and camping). Hitting on the same theme, avocados are a California treasure, too. So, crispy tortilla chips, chunky avocado guacamole, hot salsas, margaritas, cervezas (beers), and great tacos with hot sauce should not be taken for granted. There are redwood tree and earthquake survival kits, unique to the Bear Flag State, and we are home to the “Happiest Place on Earth,” Disneyland, Anaheim, CA. We also have Cactus Cooler soda, a Fred Flintstone favorite, with its pineapple and orange tanginess. And, Californians can eat at In-N-Out, have a cheese hamburger, fries and chocolate malt shake, and follow it by dessert, a box of See's Candy. Signs of the season
Christmas tree permits are available for those who like to find their holiday trees on a forest, cut them down, and happily carry them home. The Inyo National Forest sells Christmas tree permits (for BLM Bishop, Tonopah, and Humboldt-Toiyabe NF and Field Offices). Permits can be obtained at the White Mountain Public / Info Center, Bishop, CA, and Mammoth Lakes Welcome Center, Mammoth Lakes, CA. It's $5 a tree, and Pinyon Pines and Junipers Only. The first big storm of the season brought more than six feet of new snow to the higher elevations in the Sierra Nevada last week, just in time for skiing, snowboarding, trekking through the forest, or playing in the snow over Thanksgiving weekend.
The first good snow, last week, with its powerful atmospheric river of moisture started the winter season off at Mammoth Mountain Ski Area, and it looks like this storm makes history too. It's been just three months since Mammoth and Squaw Valley (a Lake Tahoe resort) closed, the shortest summer and fall, off-season in quite some time. Mammoth locals were still enjoying late summer slopes, chutes, and snow from January. MMSA opened November 9. Last week's storm total at MMSA: Two feet of new snow at the Main Lodge (season total, 27 inches), and more than six feet at the top. People will be gobbling up the fresh powder, top-to-bottom, on the slopes over Thanksgiving weekend.

HIGH COUNTY RACCOONS When I think about all the beautiful wildlife I've seen in a lifetime of tramping the Valley, the deserts, foothills and Sierra from Yosemite to Red Rock Canyon on a scale of one to ten a pair of mallards on a peaceful lake ranks near the top. At one time there was a lodge on Gem Lake, the Chinese cook at the lodge was named Billy. His favorite fishing hole was the ponds just above Gem Lake. The ponds bear his name today, Billy Ponds. (This was told to me by Pat Baker Roberts whose family owns the cabin at the Lake). I was working for Frontier Pack Outfit one summer and a pair of mallards took up residence on Billy Pond. It wasn't long before they had seven little ones. As I went up the trail most every day it was always a treat to see the family of mallards and the tourists loved it and would snap pictures of them as they hurried the little family across the Pond and out of sight. Now I've told you that you rarely see a raccoon in the high country I think Gem Lake is around ten thousand feet. One early morning I was heading up the trail and I noticed a raccoon track going up the trail and he headed straight for Billy Ponds. I never saw any waterfowl again on the Pond for the rest of the summer. Whether the raccoon got the young ones that couldn't fly and the parents left or if he killed them all I do not know. I've mentioned before I think the mountain lions prey on the raccoons, and I'm sure that they do and the fact that mountain lions are cannibals and prey on their own young is the only two good things I can think of about mountain lions, and they are sure not worth the thirty million dollars we spend on them each year.
