Hometown Paper of the Eastern Sierra - Published Weekly

VOL. XXII, NO. 41

It’s a candy store for car enthusiasts Owens Valley Cruisers’ fall colors car show By Christina Reed, The Hired Pen Eastern Sierra, CA—Gorgeous autumn weather and fall colors in the High Sierra created the perfect background for the Owens Valley Cruisers' Fall Colors Car Show (in its 26th year) last weekend. Welcoming visitors from around the country, and showcasing

1974 vehicles and older, the highlights of the three-day long event were the beautifully restored automobiles cruising Main Street in Bishop, CA, the Show and Shine Car Show at the Tri-County Fairgrounds, the free block party, with the Elm Street Band from Long Beach, CA at the Roadhouse restaurant in Bishop, CA, and the Poker Run into the vibrantly colored surrounding mountains.

Love That Color Classic rides came in all styles and paint jobs, but the Top Five Classic Car Colors (according to Hagerty car swap and Popular Mechanics) were in abundance at the Owens Valley Cruisers' Fall Colors Car Show.

Cherry Red

Grabber Blue

Chevrolet's sporty 1970 Chevelle Malibu, with the two famous stripes down the middle of the car, made this hot color very cool in the 1970s. And, if you happen to find a 1959 Cadillac in this hard-to-miss color, you've scored in the collectors' markets.

Ford took this color to new heights with the 1969 Shelby Mustang, and this hue of blue made the muscle cars look very dreamy, and...super fast.

An eye-catching 1955 Chevy pickup was the proud entry of Al Oppio and Liz Kern, of the Farsiders Car Club. While not exactly Grabber Blue, Brad Rizzi of Riverside and Bishop, CA, said “The girls love the color.”

Fly Yellow Story has it that Enzo Ferrari was a horse racing fan, and one of his favorite horses was “Fly,” and hence, Fly Yellow, a Ferrari staple in its stable.

Ivy Green

Mike Herring's, of the Derelict Diners Car Club, 1929 Ford stood out from the crowd in the vintage automobiles.

Jay Smart, of Bishop, CA, brought his daughter, Denise, home in this classic, one-owner (Jay), 1965 Ford Mustang. Passersby said, “We love your car.” Smart just celebrated 52 years of driving the Ford.

Originally, Ivy Green was a Cadillac color in 1942, but Steve McQueen, playing Frank Bullitt, in the classic ride movie, “Bullitt,” (1968), turned the iconic 1968 Ivy Green Mustang GT's chase scenes (in San Francisco, CA) into one of the most famous stunts ever filmed.

The vintage 1929 Ford Model “A” entered by Steve Tancredy really was striking in the bright autumn sunlight.

Hugger Orange The brighter the better was the motto of the 1960s and 1970s, and this brand of orange became a 1960s Camaro must-have.

OBITUARY

Musical/Electronics

Lorie Kay Nelums, 58, of Bishop, California passed away on October 1, 2017 in the comfort of her home. Lorie was born in Ventura, California on December 24, 1958 to Monte and Cora Williams. In August of 1969, the Williams family moved to Bishop, California where they went onto to pursue a career in the grocery industry and eventually owned and operated the Joseph’s Bi-Rite Markets. Lorie attended Bishop Unified School District grades elementary through high school, where she graduated from Bishop Union High School in 1977. Lorie went onto attend college in Victorville from 1977-1979. In 1980, Lorie married her husband, Mike Nelums, where they went onto have their children, Jeffery Michael and Samantha Kay Nelums. Lorie is best remembered by her husband, Mike, as being the spark in his life, and as a caring mother who was very involved and dedicated in her children’s lives. The community has fond memories of her smiling and friendly face at Joseph’s Bi-Rite Market where she was employed for over thirty years. Lorie’s passion was her children; which led her into coaching her son’s hockey team, her daughter’s softball teams, as well as being involved in the 4-H club. Lorie’s hobbies included crocheting, reading, and her perpetual love for animals. She also loved her third child, Benny, her grandchildren: Sadie, Ebby, Zoe, Frankie, Festus, Molly, Avery, Jake, Cowboy, and Phoebe, whom all walk on four legs. Lorie is preceded in death by her father, Monte Williams. She is survived by her husband, Mike Nelums, her son and daughter in-law, Jeffrey Michael and Breanne Nelums, her daughter, Samantha Kay Nelums, her mother, Cora Anna Hanby-Williams, her siblings Marty Williams and wife Marcy, Larry Williams, Lisa Pitman and husband Dale, Mona Velasquez and husband Pedro, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephew. Graveside service will be held at East Line Street Cemetery on Saturday, October 14, 2017 at 11 A.M., followed by a reception at the Bishop Country Club for those who would like to attend. In lieu of flowers, wear something green, as that was Lorie’s favorite color, or donate in memory of Lorie Kay Nelums to the American Diabetes Association.

We all know that are large back country lakes are home to some large trout; but, you rarely hear of anyone catching a large trout. From the stories I've heard from fishermen in the back country that too light of tackle was used and caused the loss of the large fish after they were hooked. Some of the back country lakes have a reputation for large fish Hortense is one and Wallace is an other. One you rarely hear about is Upper Lost Lake in the Ansel Adams Wilderness. The best way to get there is to book a trip with Frontier Pack Outfit at Silver Lake. There is no trail to Lost Lake ; but, from the Frontier campsite at Wagh Lake any map will show you how to get to Lower Lost Lake. Then follow the small stream that feeds into the lake and off to the west you will find Middle Lost Lake. Continue on a little north and you will come to Upper Lost Lake. Be sure to take some heavy tackle. The fish in Upper Lost are large and I have never seen anything like them before. Their teeth on the bottom jaw is about twice the size of a ordinary trout. The flesh of these trout is bright orange. When I got out of the mountains I called Phil Pister and asked him if he knew where Upper Lost Lake was. Of course he knew, then I asked him what kind of fish those were. He said, we don't know then he went on to explain the type of fish. Originally the Lake was stocked with golden trout that spawn as soon as the ice breaks and the golden were doing very well. Then they decided to stock brown trout in the lake that spawn just before the freeze up. The two species did very well. Then they added a landlocked salmon that spawn mid summer. It don't know the altitude of Upper Lost Lake; but, I would say it is well over 12,0000 feet.. Now I have seen these high mountain lakes with plenty of ice around the shore in September and I've seen them start to freeze in October. So you see the three species spawned at the same time and naturally crossed. Now, they might not have a name; but, they are a great fighting trout and they do get big.
