“The beautification of Sterling Heights” Residents, family, friends and community turn out for Rose Gardens’ dedication By Christina Reed The Hired Pen Bishop, CA—A perfectly splendid autumn afternoon greeted the residents, family, friends, and community at Sterling Heights' courtyard for the Rose Gardens Dedication. The sunny, warm weather made the roses' fragrance a part of the lasting memories for all who stopped to smell the roses that day. The two-plus-year idea, put forth by residents, and family and friends of deceased residents, the Beautification of Sterling Heights was introduced by five-year resident, Charlotte Prevost, whose best friend, Fern Young, also a former resident, was an inspiration for the blooming success. In her words, Prevost summed up the whole notion of this beautification story.
“The Beautification of Sterling Heights” “The idea began with a suggestion by our oldest resident, Fern
Young, 101 years old. She wanted to donate her favorite rose bush, Double Delight, to be planted in front of one of the eight windows in the dining room. As others heard of this, they wanted to do the same and soon all spaces were filled with favorites,” Prevost continued. “The Bishop Nursery was contacted and the roses were ordered. It was discovered that soil preparation was more expensive than the roses, so a fund was established for that purpose. The roses were put into the ground by Fred Kasper, in maintenance. They were soon blooming profusely. “Fern never lived to see her bush in full bloom. It is doing very well and truly a double delight to everyone who sees it. “We the residents consider this to be our home. Everyone is so kind and do whatever they can to make our days pleasant and fulfilling. We are truly one big family. This project has been completed by donations made by the residents and we would like to dedicate it to Sterling Heights.”
Residents, family, friends, and community members were a part of Sterling Heights' Rose Gardens took center stage the Beautification of Sterling at the Beautification of Sterling Heights' dedication Heights, and the Rose Gardens' Dedication, October 21, 2017. on October 21, 2017.
At left: Fern Young's (a former resident at Sterling Heights, and inspiration for the roses) great niece, Sharon Sears, a nurse in Bishop, CA, came to see her great aunt's favorite rose in blooming splendor. The Double Delight rose, with its two-tone pink blush, with deep pink edges, was the favorite rose of all of her family's gals.
Edna Lynn Wright, a former resident, now deceased, liked to plant every rose she received as a gift while at Sterling Heights. Her daughter, Diana Sanford, (at left) of Crowley Lake, CA, came to dedicate her mother's, Edna's Mini Rose Garden. Sanford, said in her heart-felt comments, Sterling Heights “truly was her [mother's] home.”
Following the story about the Rose Gardens, Prevost introduced some of the staff at Sterling Heights. Vanessa Jones, administrator at Sterling Heights, said, “I was excited to see it come to bloom,” when she told the guests the Rose Gardens were a part of some of the “keys to happiness.” She added, we all need “something to do, something to love, and something to hope for,” and she thanked the family, friends, staff, and community for continuing to give us all the reasons for these things. Kerry Nugent, business office manager, joined the staff recently, and was pleased to meet with the guests, family, friends, and community. Trudi Lee, activities director at Sterling Heights, explained how important family and friends were to the Sterling Heights community, and described them as being “a valued part” of the assisted living programs, and place. Chelsea Hoodman, activities and refreshments, was pleased to have her first job out of high school, and created a festive, rose-filled refreshment table for all of the residents and guests.
Charlotte Prevost (right) presided over the Beautification of Sterling Heights' Rose Gardens Dedication. Sterling Heights' Administrator,Vanessa Jones, (left) gave Prevost a hug after the ceremony. Kelli Brown, of Bishop, CA, came to share her deceased mother's, Patty Long, favorite rose, Strike It Rich. Brown laughingly told of her mother's trips to Yerington, Nevada, and how she liked to gamble. So a fitting name for her bright sunny yellow rose, with tinges of pink.

Save the date Independent Project Press presents the 2017 Downtown Bishop Chocolate Art Walk Come out and enjoy a fantastic evening of art, music and chocolate in downtown Bishop on Saturday evening, October 28th, from 4:00 - 8:00 PM! In what has become a beloved annual tradition, the fifth Downtown Bishop Chocolate Art Walk will include 25 locations in Downtown Bishop featuring an impressive and wide range of creative and artistic presentations. More than 50 artists and photographers will be displaying their creative work alongside unique musical performances, and as always, free unique chocolate treats at every location. Many artists will be present at the various locations to share stories and insights about their work. Start your afternoon beginning at 3 PM with a visit to The Project Room at Independent Project Press (186A Willow Street) to pick up an official Map Flyer with descriptions of all the events, and enjoy the musical performances on the East Willow Stage directly across the street. The first 100 people to pick up a Map Flyer from The Project Room will also receive a complimentary hand-letterpress printed commemorative print produced for the Chocolate Art Walk this year. Map Flyers will also be available at all of the other locations on the Chocolate Art Walk, while supplies last. The Project Room at Independent Project Press will feature beautiful new mixed media oil paintings from Karen Nielsen Licher and encaustic photographic prints from the lens of Bruce Willey. In addition, view work from our gallery artists: black & white desert photography and letterpress printed editions by Bruce Licher; beautiful photorealistic oil paintings and archival prints from Ray T. Dutcher and Alan Sonneman; handmade kaleidoscopes and kaleidoscopic mandala prints from Judyth Greenburgh; exquisite vintage process photographic prints from Joe Profita; hand-carved rubber and linoleum print editions from Lori Michelon; colorful, abstract entropic photographs from Charles Milligan; encaustic wax abstracts from Rodney Thompson; and carved stone sculpture from Dick Cheeseman. Chocolate-dipped crystallized ginger and fresh fruit will be served. Joe Lane of Mountain Rambler Brewery presents “The East Willow Stage” at the Mountain Rambler warehouse space (193 Willow Street) directly across from The Project Room at Independent Project Press. The performing schedule for the East Willow Stage will be: 3 p.m. - SR2 featuring Bruce & Karen Licher; 4 p.m. - Derik Olson; 4:30 p.m. - Sophie Bijjani; 5 p.m. - Eric Ellis; 6 p.m. - Idle Hands Trio Plus; 7 p.m. - Samuel F. Trout and the Toddlers. In addition to the official Downtown Bishop Chocolate Art Walk locations, we are also pleased to recommend two other events that will coincide with, or are related to, the Art Walk: • On the same evening at the Chocolate Art Walk, the Bishop Union School District will host the 2017 “Students Supporting Cancer Awareness Luminary Walk.” Meet at 5:30 pm on the front lawn of Bishop Union High School. $5 donation requested. • On Sunday, October 29th at 3:00 pm, the Bishop Twin Theater proudly presents “The Oyler House: Richard Neutra’s Desert Retreat”. This beautiful film, which has captivated film festival audiences all over the world, tells the moving story of a lifetime Inyo County employee/resident, the late Richard Oyler, who, after seeing a Time magazine cover story on renowned architect Richard Neutra, had the courage in 1957 to reach out and ask Neutra to design his modest family home in Lone Pine.

Sportsman’s Corner by Duane Rossi
THE RIGHT TO CARRY I was watching a debate after the shooting on the ball field. It seems some of our elected officials would like to have the right to carry a concealed weapon. On the other side of the debate of the argument was, that if congressmen could carry everybody should be able to carry. We know this wouldn't work. When our elected officials are sworn in with their hand of the Bible they swear to uphold all the laws of the constitution, state and district they represent. How simple would it be to deputize them and with the proper training could carry a concealed weapon to defend themselves. I watched the congressman that was shot on the ball field hobble in on his first day back on the job. He spoke of what happened on that horrible day. He said when he hit the ground bleeding all he could do was pray. Now you know there are laws against praying on some public properties. Students are even sent home from school for wearing offensive t-shirts, offensive being patriotic or religious. Folks, we have politicians in high offices when offered the right amount of cash will lobby and approve any bill that crosses their desk. Have you ever wondered why you find so-called atheists in high paying positions; but, never in a lettuce field working for minimum wages under the hot California sun or in a hospital bed in the cancer ward or in a fox hole in a foreign land??? God bless America. Sponsored by Reagan’s Sporting Goods www.reaganssportinggoods.com
