Historic Benton Hot Springs’ cemetery dedication “Feet First” and celebrating our ancestors By Christina Reed, The Hired Pen
Diane Bramlette, owner with husband, Bill, of Historic Benton Hot Springs, portrayed Jane Lynch a brothel owner in Benton in the 1880s, at the Historic Benton Hot Springs non-profit's cemetery dedication on August 19, 2017. Joining her in the background were more ghostly characters from Benton's illustrious past.
Solemnly standing in Benton's cemetery, a group of former residents pay tribute to their own with new headstones. RIP
Benton Hot Springs, CA—A lively turnout of Benton's inhabitants and guests, complete with costumes and customs, appeared at the Historic Benton Hot Springs' non-profit's cemetery dedication last month (August 19). Stories about some of Benton's most famous citizens' demises, deaths, funerals, and past lives were shared with the crowd, as a light summer rain cooled off Benton's hillside cemetery (established in 1868). The special event featured many of the Eastern Sierra's most noteworthy historical characters, brought back to tell their stories, and current residents, who bore witness to the unveiling of new tombstones in Mono County's oldest cemetery. Wine-tasting, dining, music, a silent auction, and a speaker, Rebecca Kinaston (biological anthropologist), who talked of graveyards, completed the festivities.
Robert Morrison (standing next to his new headstone), portrayed by Eric Haddi al-Faddon, recounted his fateful ending at Convict Lake, after being shot by escaped convicts from Carson City, Nevada. Photos by The Hired Pen
Sarah Devine (played by Joy Fatooh) and Robert Morrison (played by Eric Haddi al-Faddon) were to be married in Benton, but alas, Morrison was shot dead near Convict Lake by escaped convicts from Carson City, Nevada. Mt. Morrison, overlooking Long Valley near Mammoth Lakes, is named for the Benton resident.
her beloved Robert Morrison's untimely murder by a gang of convicts. Deputy Sheriff Robert Morrison (1837-1871) was a Wells Fargo agent in Benton, when convicts escaped from the Carson City, Nevada prison in 1871. Morrison helped Sheriff George Hightower's posse find the prisoners (where ultimately they were hanged in Round Valley, outside of Bishop). But, alas, Morrison was gunned down near Convict Lake by the outlaws. It was said, before the posse rode out of town, Morrison had proposed to Devine, and she had accepted. She was on the train to marry Morrison when he passed into history. Their wedding was never to be, and
Devine instead attended Morrison's funeral procession up the hill...to his final resting place...and not into her loving arms. Although, “stout and hardy,” as Ms. Lynch said of the “Victorian Americans,” there were many more restrictions on lifestyles, customs, sentiments, and the Historic Benton Hot Springs non-profit's ceremony made the best of showing how cemeteries play an important role in our history. Fred Stump, presently Mono County's Supervisor District #2, spoke during the dedication and eloquently said, cemeteries were and always will be places “to find a moment of peace and understanding.”
“Feet First” Bill and Diane Bramlette, owners of the historic Benton Hot Springs Inn, and where the cemetery has been on the property since 1868, set the tone of the special event. Diane Bramlette, who portrayed Jane Lynch (1830-1897; a prominent business woman of three brothels in Benton), described what it meant to be laid to rest “feet first” (head to the west, and feet to the east) during the introduction to Victorian-era funeral etiquette. The sad story of a fiancée, made premature widow, was related by Joy Fatooh, playing the part of Sarah Devine. Dressed in head-to-toe black, with a veil completely covering her head, Devine wistfully told of

I think it was 1950 Al Crocker and some of his friends were going duck hunting he invited my hunting buddy Ted and I over as he wanted us to meet the new warden that had just moved ta the valley .We enjoyed great hunting in those days not only did we have water fowl migrating to the valley we had local ducks nesting on the river and ponds. We also had pheasants grouse in the high country sage hen in coyote valley and you couldn't keep the quail out of your gardens. No I'm not talking before LA took the water I'm talking when the Calif. dept. of F&G was allowed to manage the wildlife using sense and science. Coffee was on at 3;30AM Ted and I had a cup of coffee met the new warden whose name was Phil Phister thanked Al and left. At day light we spotted four geese Howdy Smiths hay field Ted went around to the far side I crawled up the ditch on my side we had the geese in between us Ted stood up and shoot one of the geese the others flew right over my head they looked like they were a mile high and I didn't shoot I couldn't see how they got so high so fast. When we got back to the car Ted had a strange goose it looked exactly like a Canadian honker but was only a little bigger then a drake mallard .It's been so long ago I have forgotten what the men got but Ted was the hero of hunt. Al Crocker identified the little goose as a Hutchison Goose very rare way back then. Al kept the goose to have it mounted. This is the only Hutchison goose I ever saw or heard of. If anyone has any information on them I would sure like to hear about it. Sponsored by Reagan’s Sporting Goods www.reaganssportinggoods.com

Imagine Imagine you found yourself in a field that extended as far as the eye could see. It could be in a desert or a grassy plain, even extending to a plush forest. Everything you see is yours to do as you wish. The creator of this scene has agreed to assist you in any way you see fit. You can maintain and sustain things as they are, or you can enhance the scene with improvements of your design. Conversely you can trash the place and the designer will assist you in your endeavor. Even though this is just your imagination that is precisely the way Divine Mind, Infinite Wisdom and Perfect Peace operates in your life. God has given us the power to choose how we will live or die. Ernest Holmes cited the two fold nature of God as love and law. The love is ability to have choice, and the law governs how our choice will manifest. A choice of despair or negativity will bring more of the same, while a choice of upliftment will enhance life. You might say that nobody would choose limitation if they had a choice, but acceptance of limitation is the same as choosing it. In their endeavor to support humility rather than arrogance, the established church often taught that man was lower than a snake’s belly, however; that often backfired. In this age of personal recognition, many are seeking answers outside of the church or within supportive philosophies. Even prayer has taken on new elements. The prayers of Jesus are not begging to a reluctant God, but an acceptance of the thing desired as already present. Affirmative prayer, or Treatment as described by Holmes is direct way of conveying your desires on the Universe. How would your field look after you were put in charge? Would it be beautiful or cluttered with the debris from many missteps and false starts? Once we have accepted that it is God’s pleasure to give us the kingdom, we start building a successful life with health, prosperity and happiness. We want the people occupying our land to prosper as we do, so we want to see them equally blessed. When challenges such as Hurricane Harvey hits, we support the people any way we can. I wanted to donate some money to support the recovery effort, but I wanted the money to go to the people in need, not supporting organizations taking so much money for their overhead. I treated that I would find a way to contribute, and I released the treatment to the Universe; then I went shopping for groceries. As I was checking out of the store, the card reader asked me if I wished to contribute to the hurricane relief effort. Not believing in coincidence, I knew I had made my demonstration. Let the Truth set you free. Make your choice, and know you have set the law in motion. Let’s improve the valuation of your land and the people that dwell on it. God is Love and Loving You Right Now!
