Fore! A Good Cause

Teaming up to take a swing in support of National Wounded Warrior Center By Christina Reed The Hired Pen Bishop, CA—It's time to get out the golf clubs, the team spirit, and your best swing on the greens at the Fall Golf Fundraiser for the National Wounded Warrior Center (to be built in Mammoth Lakes, CA) at the Bishop Country Club, Saturday, September 23. This tournament is popular, with a four-person scramble, beginning with a shotgun start at 9 AM, says tournament chairman, Colonel Robert Waggoner, and everyone is encouraged to get their sign-ups in early.

This artistic rendering of the National Wounded Warrior Center shows off the yearround residential center, which will house and serve veteran and active wounded warriors around the country. Rendering courtesy of NWWC.

“It's back to the links,” says Colonel Robert Waggoner, as the second annual Fall Golf fundraiser at the Bishop Country Club, September 23, takes a swing at making a difference in the lives of Wounded Warriors. The front nine holes at the Bishop Country Club were built in 1963, with Joe Williams as the designer. The back nine holes were developed in 1982 by Gary Roger Baird. However, people were playing at the Eastern Sierra Golf Club back in 1959, when the greens were transformed from rangeland. Photo by The Hired Pen This Third annual event yields much-needed funding for the National Wounded Warrior Center being created in Mammoth Lakes, Waggoner explains, an Air Force pilot for 26plus years, and long-time resident, with his wife, Vicki, in the Eastern Sierra. Waggoner holds an advisory position with the Wounded Warrior Center, and is continuing to assist with the fundraising efforts of the Disabled Sports Eastern Sierra, DSES, (headed up by Kathy Copeland of Mammoth Lakes), which is offering wounded warriors a chance to experience outdoor adventures, and education.

Learn, Heal, and Thrive Since its inception in 2003, DSES has extended a generous welcome to wounded warriors and their families, and its programs (begun in earnest with camps in 2007) have served hundreds of veterans, who enjoy rehabilitation through sports, recreation, educa-

tion, counseling, and group camaraderie. The “healing process,” is very important, says Waggoner, and he adds, “PTSD [Post Traumatic Stress Disorder] is nothing new.” He continues by describing the first meetings with Camp Pendleton Wounded Warriors from the Naval Medical center (San Diego, CA) in Mammoth Lakes in 2003, and the important work which followed with the veterans. Since 2003, DSES has partnered with the Department of Defense, and all of the military branches in support of building this unique National Wounded Warrior Center. Changing the lives of veterans is the goal of the center, through learning, healing, and thriving in the mountain environment, with the generous support and instruction of others. It's about “giving time” for those who want to “continue a trade or education,” Waggoner says. Once built, this new, state-of-the-art facility (adjacent to the Cerro Coso College in Mammoth Lakes, CA), with 33 rooms, and amenities will be “the only one of its kind,” in the US, Katie Johnson, with the National Wounded Warrior Center noted recently at the music festival in Bishop, CA. The Eastern Sierra Music Festivals (in its second year) and the Fall Golf Fundraiser are designed to contribute awareness, and assist with the funding of this $17.9 million National Wounded Warrior Center project. DSES, with its 14-year track record of providing, currently 3,000 annual adaptive therapeutic recreation events or lessons, for all seasons, is the organization which is the genus or origin of the idea of the National Wounded Warrior Center. The next phase of development is taking shape, and DSES and the National Wounded Warrior Center are partnering in an effort to put the innovative ideas and collective knowledge together. Why not take a swing at a hole-in-one, or two, at the Fall Golf Fundraiser? You could possibly win a new Honda (donated by Perry Motors)...if you are lucky and skilled enough to get that prized hole-in-one. The entry fees include a lovely dinner at the Bishop Country Club, and the magnificent views of the Sierra are thrown in for good measure!

The Great Spirit Centuries ago, our scientist postulated that all matter consisted of a Universal element, they labeled either. The consolidation of this elemental substance into visible form had such theological implication that they still present division in people of faith throughout the world. That either joins its particles together to create form is not a problem, but the effect of the form is. What causes the coalescence to begin or end also creates problems of understanding. Why a loving deity would allow or permit what many would consider negative manifestations, presents problems in explanation. The problem comes from attributing personality to the undifferential spirit we call God. Explanations of what, who, and any number of inquiries to what God is very often are limited. Even Jesus attempted a simple explanation by referring to God as father. Part of the problem is that God is both Creator and Servant. That God would be a servant might require further explanation. The Bible tells us that it is the Father’s good pleasure to give us the kingdom, which means that you are determining what that kingdom is. It seems farfetched that God would reward your request for limitation, or even would is perceived as evil, but it’s whatever you desire that counts. Having said what is outlined above should give us all caution towards our expressed desires. The awareness that I am shaping my environment and situations is both awesome and frightening. Most people don’t seem to know that there thoughts, words and actions shape the Creative mechanism of the Universe. Medical professionals have known for years the relationship of emotions to either a disease or cure in the individual. As a Religious Scientist and a teacher of the philosophy, it is my job to help students to take control of their lives. Like any study, discipline to the basic premise is paramount, and that is that there is only One Mind in the Universe, and that is God’s Mind and we are all using it. How we use it is how It acts in our life. Like in mathematics, negatives added to negatives always result in negatives. Positives added to positives are always positive. Having pure negative or pure positive attitudes or intent rarely happens, at least in the beginning. We are emotional beings, however; we find it advantages to foster beneficial feelings toward our life experience. Those prone to wallow in negativity have a much harder time than some, but they can all come to eat at the table in the kingdom. Raymond Charles Barker wrote in his book, “The Cause and Cure of the Common Cold.” When a student comes to him with a cold, he asked, “Who did you get mad at?” This shows the relationship of negativity and its unfoldment. You don’t have to join the choir or even come to church to turn your life around. You don’t even need to believe in God, but you must recognize an intelligence propelling you to your destiny, but only you can make it happen. God is Love and Loving You Right Now!

Sportsman’s Corner by Duane Rossi

MOUNTAIN MEADOW MEMORIES It was a good year 1994. the fruit trees were loaded . My fourteen year old granddaughter and I were canning peaches and making jam. I was also teaching her how to fly fish. Bishop Pack Outfitters called, they needed help with a pack trip, We packed two men and four teenage boys over Paiute Pass and made camp down on Paiute Creek. There is no better place in the world to learn how to fly fish than our back country streams. The first night we were cooking dinner ( guess what) steak and spaghetti. One of the boys came over and asked if there was meat in the spaghetti sauce. You bet, lots of it. Well he was a vegetarian and didn't eat meat. Nobody had told us. Do you eat fish, I asked? Yes, I love fish. My granddaughter grabbed her fly rod and took off. About twenty minutes later, she came back with five golden trout. Katie saved the trip and what a wonderful trip it was. Take a kid fishing today. Sponsored by Reagan’s Sporting Goods www.reaganssportinggoods.com
