Halloween was a scary success and lots of fun

Veterans Day is celebrated on November 11, at 11:00 a.m.This is a day honoring military veterans and persons who have served in the US Armed Forces.

Clever or scary costumes and some trick-o-treating were on tap on Halloween in the Eastern Sierra, and some neighborhoods turned out to have socially distanced bonfires and bags of treats for the kids. In Bishop, the new Wanaaha Casino (formerly the Paiute Palace Casino) opened to festive visitors, some in costumes, and many who were excited to see the new entertainment open its doors after watching the construction for the past year. Opening the casino's live entertainment was Sandy and the High Country, who traditionally have played for people on Halloween, up and down the High Sierra. Eastern Sierra, CA-- Monday, November 11, at 11:00 a.m. is Veterans Day in America. A day originally called Armistice Day, was dedicated to the cause of world peace, and the end of World War I, on June 28, 1919. Congress approved the official federal holiday on May 13, 1938. And, on this day, veterans' organizations around the world assemble to honor those who served in military service. Locally, ceremonies at cemeteries take place, with color guards and speeches by guests. The Department of Veterans Affairs says there are 17.4 million veterans in the US (according to the US Census). The Gulf-War veterans are now the largest percentage of US veterans (as of 2016), with Vietnam era veterans being replaced in numbers by the Gulf War vets. And, the majority of our veterans, about 77 percent, served during wartime and about 23 percent served during peacetime. The census bureau notes that we have fewer people in our population with military experience, down from 18 percent in 1980 to seven percent of our population. This also means that fewer of our congress members have military experience (20 percent of senators and 19 percent of representatives as of 2016). In Inyo and Mono Counties we currently do not have a full time dedicated Veterans Services director, and nationally
