The Inyo County Courthouse Turns 100 Years Old 2022

Independence, CA—The Inyo County Courthouse turned 100 years old on April 10, 2022, and the town of Independence, and surrounding communities and residents gathered on the front lawn and in front of the courthouse to celebrate in grand style. With the colors of gold and black, for a 100th birthday, as its theme, the Courthouse Birthday Bash welcomed “its own at its seat of government,” the program said. Festivities included light refreshments, souvenir magnets, birthday cake, and lots of speakers, memories, and stories. Constructed in 18 months and dedicated on April 10, 1922, Inyo County’s fourth courthouse was designed by the well-known architect, William Weeks, who was a popular West Coast designer during the 1900s-1920s. Inyo County’s Courthouse was built in the Neo-classical Revival style of public architecture, and in 1998, the courthouse was placed on the National Register of Historic Places, in recognition of its “integrity of feeling and association.” Inyo County’s Courthouse is still the county’s seat of government, and the superior courthouse cases have included the infamous Manson family, during the 1970s.

April 10, 2022 - Eastern Sierra Pride is a newly formed nonprofit organized to serve the Eastern Sierra LGBTQIA+ community. Formed in October 2021, the organization is composed of LGBTQIA+ people and allies working together to ensure the Eastern Sierra is a safe, healthy, and welcoming place for everyone in the LGBTQIA+ community, and their family and friends. Eastern Sierra Pride will immediately be offering programs and events, from local meet ups to Pride month celebrations; and resources, from job listings to dogsitters; with much more to come. Local community meetups will be held every first and third Monday at Mountain Rambler Brewery, from 6.00pm-9.00pm, beginning Monday, April 18th (all ages welcome). As one of its first public efforts, the organization is spearheading a first-of-its-kind Eastern Sierra Pride Festival for the Eastern Sierra area, to be held at the Tri-County Fairgrounds and other venues on June 4th and 5th. Local resources include trusted healthcare providers, job listings and professional development, and support hotlines. “I am so thankful to be working with such an incredible group of people that are working tirelessly to bring this much-needed organization to the Eastern Sierra,” said Deena Davenport Conway, President, Eastern Sierra Pride. Jane Bright Memorial Abril-14-Jueves-de-2022 CROSSWORD Rock Garden Opens 2022 1

Independence, CA—The Eastern California Museum is home to a new exhibit, the Jane Bright Memorial Rock Garden, and on April 10, 2022, family, friends, and residents gathered around to hear about the remarkable woman, Jane Bright, who inspired the garden of Inyo County rock and mineral specimens. Jane Bright was not a conventional woman, as her son, Don Bright said during the ceremony. An avid geologist, Jane’s experiences influenced her family and Don said, “she had a strong sense of community. She always thought one person could make a difference.” Don described many of the unique qualities of his mother, and laughter was heard when he recalled adventures his mother would drag the kids on. “Oh look...there’s a....” became a rallying cry for getting out of a vehicle and exploring something that caught Jane’s eye or fancy. Don also remembered it was his father, Keith’s idea, to get the geologic exhibit together, rather than another flower exhibition.

Dave Wagner was a great friend of the Bright’s and the former field geologist, with the California Geological Survey, worked on the exhibit for more than 10 years. Jane loved geology and so did Dave, and the culminating “Geological Walk of Time” exhibit demonstrated the wonders of Inyo County’s geology. The specimens on display invite the visitors to take a journey back into the Earth’s history, with a story told through its rocks and minerals. The displays are a visual experience, and being able to see these exhibits / specimens and read about the importance of geologic time is well worth the trip to Independence’s Eastern California Museum.

City of Bishop New Administrator The Bishop City Council announced after its April 11, 2022, meeting the appointment of Deston Dishion to serve as the permanent City Administrator effective immediately. Mr. Dishion had served the past few months in an interim capacity, and had in his past service with the City served as the Acting City Administrator on numerous occasions. Mr. Dishion, has been a valuable part of the administrative and management team of the City for over 21 years with over 26 years of employment with the City.
