Hometown Paper of the Eastern Sierra - Published Weekly

April 15 – 21, 2021

Earth Day Begins at Home 2021 tant events leading up to Earth Day too. Kelley Williams, Emergency Services Manager for Inyo County, says there will be a Free Green Waste Disposal, part of Wildfire Prevention, event on April 17-18, in Inyo County. Williams notes that wildfire prevention and looking after Mother Earth are a part of Earth Day. The Paiute Shoshone Reservation in Lone Pine, CA, will have a Tribal Earth Day Event, at the community center, April 17-18. The community of Independence is having a Community Clean up, as a part of the Fire Safe Council, and a roll off / dumpster will be available April 24-25. The Sierra Trash Eliminators are meeting to tackle trash clean up on April 24, from 9 AM to Noon. Joining in are Friends of the Inyo, and Bishop council member, Jim Ellis. Location: parking lot behind Bishop City Hall.

Ongoing Earth Day Projects

Dylan Harris, owner of Owens Valley Scrap Metal, is doing his part for Earth Day. He's in the recycling business, for about five years now in Bishop, CA. By Christina Reed The Hired Pen “We do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children”---Chief Seattle Eastern Sierra, CA—Earth Day 2021 is Thursday, April 22, and it's a celebration / anniversary of the environmental movement, which started in 1970. The Santa Barbara Oil Spill, in January of 1969, drew the attention of activists and legislators alike, and Senator Gaylord Nelson, of Wisconsin, went on to form what became the first “Earth Day.” President Richard Nixon signed the National Environmental Policy Act in 1969, and the California Environmental Quality Act passed into law in 1970. Today, the ongoing environmental legislation is what gives the nation its legal and regulatory framework.

Earth Day Events Many of the Earth Day events can be viewed online at earthday.org, April 20-22, and in the Eastern Sierra, there are impor-

Earth Day can be any day of the week for residents of the Eastern Sierra. Ongoing projects can include recycling, trash clean up, planting some trees or flowers, participating in the community garden, taking a walk, or merely unplugging electrical appliances when they aren't in use. Recycling, says Dylan Harris, owner of Owens Valley Scrap Metal, could get you some extra cash. “So much stuff goes into the landfill. It's amazing. Thousands and thousands of dollars get thrown away.” His point is, “even in small amounts” recycling adds up. “Pays more to recycle.” Owens Valley Scrap Metal “pays the highest prices in the Eastern Sierra,” Harris adds. And, prices for recycling are going up, and change often. “We buy all non-ferrous metals.” The short list: copper, brass, aluminum (not CRV cans), car batteries, catalytic converters, silver, gold, electric motors, and exotic metals (like tungsten). Owens Valley Scrap Metal is celebrating five years of recycling in July, and the customers come from all over the region, including Arizona and Nevada. The most unique thing Harris recycled was an aluminum glider plane. WOW! Located in Bishop, CA by Wye Road Feed. Tuesday-Friday 8 AM-5 PM Saturday 10 AM-2 PM. Manor Market's recycling program has been in effect since 1986, in Bishop, CA. Anthony Kutsoginis, manager of Manor Market's recycling program, says that more than three million pounds of trash has been recycled (2015-2020), including 400 pounds during the pandemic. April is Child Abuse Prevention Month Abril es el mes nacional de la Prevención del Abuso Infantil CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION

PREVENCIÓN DEL ABUSO INFANTIL

April was first declared Child Abuse Prevention Month by presidential proclamation in 1983. Since, then April has been a time to acknowledge the importance of families and communities working together to prevent child abuse, and to promote the social and emotional well-being of children and families.

During the month of April and throughout the year communities are encouraged to share child abuse and neglect prevention awareness strategies and activities to promote prevention across the county.

Durante el mes de Abril y todo el año comunidades son alentadas a compartir estrategias y actividades para prevenir el abuso y negligencia infantil a través del condado.

Blue Pinwheels are the national symbol for child abuse and neglect prevention. Shining in the sun, the pinwheel is reflective of the bright future ALL children deserve! Keep an eye out for Blue Pinwheel Displays in Mono County.

The Mono County Child Abuse Prevention Council (CAPC) and other agencies have planned activities for the month of April to spread awareness about Child Abuse and Neglect in Mono County.

Crowley Lake Boat Inspections Will Be Required This Spring To keep our waterways safe from the spread of invasive quaggle mussels, all boats entering Crowley Lake will be inspected. Boats showing signs of contamination, or found to contain any water or debris that could harbor mussels will not be allowed to launch into Crowley Lake. Boats that have tags from last season 2020, do not need to be re-inspected as long as the original tag has not been broken or tampered with. LADWP will continue to follow COVID-19 restrictions of mandatory face coverings and social distancing during inspections. LADWP will take additional measures to protect boat owners and LADWP employees as needed. Scheduled days that LADWP will be performing boat inspections for the year’s opening weekend set for April 24, 2021: 4/21 Bishop/ Vons 6:45A.M. -7:00 P.M. also Crowley Lake 9:00A.M. -4:00 P.M.

4/22 Bishop/Vons 6:45A.M. -7:00 P.M. also Crowley Lake 6:45A.M. -7:00 P.M.

4/23 Bishop/Vons 6:30A.M. -10:00 P.M. also Crowley Lake 6:45A.M. -Dark

4/24 Opener Crowley only 4:00 A.M. -8:00P.M.

After Saturday April 24, all boat inspections will occur during the normal business hours at Crowley Lake. For complete inspection schedule and site list visit ladwp.com/mussels. Currently, Crowley Lake is the only water body in Mono County that requires an inspection. Quagga inspections performed at the above locations will only be good for Crowley Lake. All boats inside and out must be clean and dry prior to inspection at any location, this also includes anchors, ropes, life preservers, bait tanks, hull compartments, and carpet. Boats that have been used on an infested water body within the last month, will be scrutinized heavily and may require decontamination.
