Safety is Paramount 2020 Disappointments now, but we’re saving loved ones By Christina Reed The Hired Pen Eastern Sierra, CA— What strange times we are all living in, right now. Thinking on your feet, and using a lot of common sense are the “orders-up� daily. Whether shopping from our cars, or calling for grocery deliveries, or attending Easter Sunday church services via the internet, we find ourselves remaking our daily lives in a much different fashion. We are all doing our parts, despite disappointments, but we are also saving loved Sal's Upholstery in Bishop, CA made cloth face masks to wear in ones by acting differently, in public...people helping people in our communities during tough good ways. Our local, times. state,and national leaders have had some tough decisions to make these past weeks. Many of these choices are between “worse� or “the worst� of our lifetimes. However, these meaningful and painful choices have been made, for the health, safety, and well being of all people.

The Eastern Sierra was shook up on Saturday, April 11, by 13 earthquakes (ranging from 5.3 to 3.0 on the Richter Scale), beginning around 7:36 a.m. Saturday morning. These quakes were centered near Little Huntoon Valley, literally on the “disputed� California / Nevada border. A whole lot of shaking, northwest of Benton Hot Springs.

Fishing will return. It is not being taken away forever, just until we are clear of taking risks infecting people with Covid-19. Social distancing is advised everywhere across the country. People visiting remote areas, with very limited resources, medical facilities, emergency services, and fire protection are not only putting their own lives in danger, but potentially infecting the very communities they love visiting.

California thinks about its emergency “Fishmas� / fishing opener regulations A Department of Fish and Wildlife meeting on April 9 got a bit rowdy on the open internet forum conference portion of this event. Scheduled to have made some decisions about the state of California's fishing season openings, the CDFW officials were overwhelmed with people taking the meeting over. The end result: a decision will be made this week, with a different type of discussion format in place. CDFW Commission President Eric Sklar and CDFW Director Charlton Donham issued a joint statement on April 9, and said they wanted to make it “crystal clear� that they were “not contemplating statewide closure.� They were looking at “a tailored and surgical approach based on local needs and knowledge.� The Mono County Board of Supervisors (April 1, 2020) discussed the impacts of the fishing opener on the Eastern Sierra, and the health and safety of its residents / visitors. The Board, while acknowledging “Fishmas� (this year the fishing opener day, April 25, 2020 ) and its importance to the region, also recognized the inherent dangers in inviting thousands of visitors to the region, during a Stay-at-Home mandate (March 19, 2020 through April 30, 2020) from Governor Gavin Newsom. And, frankly, our local health care facilities (in the three counties of Inyo, Mono, and Alpine) would be overburdened with potentially high numbers of Covid19 cases and exposures, to the point of endangering the lives of everyone. From Lake Topaz (northern border with California / Nevada) to the southern Sierra creeks, streams, and lakes, this year's fishing opener is already being postponed in many ways until a date to be determined later. The marinas are closed, the fishing docks are closed, resorts / short term lodging are closed, RV parks / campgrounds are closed, and camping in developed spots is closed on Bureau of Land Management, US Forest, and California State Parks' lands.

The annual Fishmas (fishing opener, April 25, in the Sierra Nevada) celebration will have to be postponed / rescheduled until it's safe for us to leave our homes during the coronavirus pandemic. Photos by The Hired Pen

Mule Days and Burning Man have been canceled for this year. The Banff Film Festival, Choo Choo Swap Meet, and Manzanar Pilgrimage have also been canceled for this year. And, Los Angeles County (April 10, 2020) has extended its Stay-at-Home order until May 15, 2020, and face coverings are now required in Los Angeles County, as of April 15, 2020 (including Santa Clarita).
