Hometown Paper of the Eastern Sierra - Published Weekly
April 22 – 28, 2021
Jane Fisher • 1923-2021
Iconic writer and columnist, Jane knew how to collect living memories By Christina Reed The Hired Pen Eastern Sierra, CA—You can feel the ground shaking as the large newspaper presses are printing out newspapers. You can smell the ink being laid on the newsprint, as the large machines crank away at the pages. You can feel the excitement of the newspaper people putting together another paper. The newspaper boys waiting for their turn to collect their runs for the morning. The stuffers gathering to insert the colorful super market ads. The pressmen carefully watching the newspaper rolls unwrap for the latest news. This is the backdrop. My first meeting with Jane Fisher, one of a couple of well-known columnists for the Inyo Register, and feature editor of Chalfant Press publications. Back in the day, there were several presses at the Bishop, CA business, within the larger newspaper presses, and these were Chalfant Press products / publications. There were many detailed memories of my working with Fisher, but stand outs were her classy appearance, dressed to the nines, false eye lashes and sparkling sharp eyes, and her ever-present set of pearls. Fisher was always impeccably attired, in form, fit and fashion. She had keen eyes and ears for a story, heard firsthand, and she might have appeared busy with some such thing, but she always kept an ear to the ground. Fisher wrote a column called “Seriously Enough,” for the Inyo Register, and her sense of humor and wit was a magical thing to watch in action. She was smart as a whip, but didn't take that out on the less shining notions. And, she was a bit scholarly and worldly, mixed in with being a girl who was raised by her pioneer family in the Owens Valley. Once a Bishop City Council member, and Mayor, during the 1980s, Rick Pucci, then Bishop's City Administrator, now Inyo County District # 3 Supervisor, recalls Fisher's dedication to the conservation of the local resources, her back country experi-
ences with her husband Robert (who was Inyo County's Public Works Director), and city council discussions about whether Bishop was ready for a more metropolitan look, by installing sidewalks, instead of grassy areas. She was deeply concerned about creating “reasonable growth,” so that we could keep enough of our young people here. Pucci says, “Jane is an iconic character here. Born and raised here. She kept her roots.” Fisher took her memories of growing up in the Owens Valley and married life, and spun them into a book, “Home Town in the High Country,” in 1984, and the collection of essays was dedicated to her mother, Marie Hurlbut. As the editor for The Album, Fisher took on a project for Chalfant Press which would span the stretches of time (late 1980s-1990s), and remain a beloved Eastern Sierra series. “The Album is different. We believe history is in the eye of the beholder and the best story tellers aren't afraid to throw in the legends,” goes the back page of the Album. Fisher's photo adorns the top of these first issues of the newly minted historical magazine of the Eastern Sierra. And, like many of Fisher's endeavors
Satellite Antennas and Receivers in Stock
in the publishing world, “It started over coffee in Barbara Moore's kitchen, with Pete Doughtie, Chalfant Press general manager, talking about how he and other newcomers (outsiders, flatlanders and such) didn't know a whole lot about the history of the Eastern Sierra, and since they were really interested, someone ought to be publishing an historical journal.” Fisher wrote, “ 'I think this is a great idea,” and then Pete produced his ha-ha grin and said, “Yes, and you are going to do it.” Pete's wife, Kaye Doughtie, worked on all of the Albums, along with layout of the Inyo Register, and Kaye says with a laugh, Fisher had “great little ditties,” and she could be very funny. Doughtie remembers the eye lashes, the wit, and over the years they stayed in touch, the Doughties from Tennessee and Fisher from Colorado, where Fisher moved to be near her kids. The Album was really emblematic of Fisher. “Sort of homespun, a folksy collection of treasured family journals, memories, and stories heard at Grandma's house (or sitting on the steps when the grownups didn't remember we could hear through the screen door), mixed with research and exploration.” Fisher wrote for The Sierra Reader (late 1990s-2000s), and worked with Noe Gadea, whom she had met at the Inyo Register years earlier. Fisher's pages included local social news, and she stayed informed on county-wide issues throughout her time at The Sierra Reader. Seen in a Bishop Chamber of Commerce Ribbon-Cutting event, the Gadeas (Noe and his wife, Donna) can be seen with Fisher (holding the scissors) and Chamber members. Donna said, “She was a cute, little woman. Miss Personality.” Noe added, “She always dressed well. She was very positive. She inspired others to smile.” We will all surely miss Jane Fisher.

PREVENCIÓN DEL ABUSO INFANTIL
April was first declared Child Abuse Prevention Month by presidential proclamation in 1983. Since, then April has been a time to acknowledge the importance of families and communities working together to prevent child abuse, and to promote the social and emotional well-being of children and families.
During the month of April and throughout the year communities are encouraged to share child abuse and neglect prevention awareness strategies and activities to promote prevention across the county.
Durante el mes de Abril y todo el año comunidades son alentadas a compartir estrategias y actividades para prevenir el abuso y negligencia infantil a través del condado.
Blue Pinwheels are the national symbol for child abuse and neglect prevention. Shining in the sun, the pinwheel is reflective of the bright future ALL children deserve! Keep an eye out for Blue Pinwheel Displays in Mono County.
The Mono County Child Abuse Prevention Council (CAPC) and other agencies have planned activities for the month of April to spread awareness about Child Abuse and Neglect in Mono County.
