Trout Season Opener 2019
Eastern Sierra, CA— Claiming to have the “luckiest worms” in the land, Reagan's Sporting Goods, on Main Street in Bishop, CA, is preparing for the traditional inland waters trout fishing opener, on Saturday, April 27, at dawn. This fishing opener weekend is a big deal for the Eastern Sierra, and for the many businesses which rely on the anglers, visitors, and shoppers to fill the stores and restaurants with enthusiasm and interest. Reagan Slee, owner of Reagan's Sporting Goods, who is a life-long resident of the area, took some time to talk “fishing” with The Sierra Reader the week before the opener, and he is excited about the many anglers he's seen coming out into the springtime fishing action, considering how long and cold our 2018-2019 winter has been. Hard winters are “slow” for fishing, but that's all about to change.
Not All Worms Are Created Equal The Sierra Reader: So, there are several different kinds of live worms for fishing. What's the difference? I mean, a worm is a worm, right? Reagan Slee: There are Baby Night Crawlers, with 15 in a box, and they are used for smaller streams, lakes and rivers. Then, there are Big Night Crawlers, with 12 in a box, and they are used for bigger lakes. And, fishermen tend to break them in half. The Meal Worms are used as add-ons to a mini-jig, a trailer, notes Jeff Nelums, manager at Reagan's. These are used for streams, lakes, and rivers. The Sierra Reader: What are some of the secrets to using worms for fishing? Reagan Slee: You can use air to fill them. Use a syringe to fill them, so they float.

What’s on the Hook? Who Has the Luckiest Worms?
Reagan Slee, (left) owner of Reagan's Sporting Goods, Bishop, CA, and Jeff Nelums, manager at Reagan's, offer some helpful tips and the “Crowley Lake Cocktail” for the traditional fishing opener, Saturday, April 27 at dawn.
“The Crowley Lake Cocktail” The Sierra Reader: What's new for this year in fishing bait and tackle? Reagan Slee: “The Crowley Lake Cocktail” really works good. Take one part gulp egg / Powerbait egg, and one part Night Crawler. You can also use a bait marshmallow on the cocktail. Sprinkle with glittery hatchery dust products for the ultimate garnish.
What's on the Hook? Reagan's Sporting Goods stocks local fishing products, including some of the hottest flies, which “mimic natural bait,” says Reagan, and there are an abundance of flies of all shapes, colors, and sizes, depending on what you are angling for. Reagan adds, fly fishing has been good at Hot Creek, near Mammoth Lakes, CA, and bass fishing is picking up at Buckley Ponds, near Bishop. Fishing has also been good at Pleasant Valley Reservoir, although the Owens River
angling in some of the Eastern Sierra waters doesn't happen the end of April, even if it were available, since the roads are covered in about 20 feet of snow. Some of the DFW changes proposed will allow year-round angling, but zero fish limits during spring, fall, and winter. Finally, there is the concern of the “over-fished” and exhausted fisheries. DFW has not provided data on these proposed changes or fish counts, as of yet, but comments are welcomed by the public up to May 3 at DFW. Two Free Fishing Days: July 6 and August 31, 2019. No license necessary, however, fish limits apply. The daily bag and possession limit for Inland Sport Fishing is five trout per day, with 10 trout in possession. Anyone 16 years old or older needs a California Sport Fishing License ($49.94 annual for resident) to fish. One ($16.20) and two-day ($25.10) licenses are available too. California fishing licenses are also good at: Lake Tahoe, Topaz Lake, and the Colorado River, where you might be fishing in California, Nevada, or Arizona on the waters.
Weather and the Passes Reagan's Sporting Goods claims to have the “the luckiest worms” in the land, plus the other fishing goodies for Fishmas, and they'll be hooking up anglers with lunker (exceptionally large) trout at the opener. Photos by The Hired Pen is running high with the spring run-off, which makes the fishing not so good, and wading in the current, very dangerous. The Sierra Reader: What would be a good set-up for the first-time angler? Reagan Slee: A simple rod and reel, with salmon eggs, or a worm at the lake. Simple. Five and a half foot pole, with four-pound test line, with split shot.
“Fishmas” - The Fishing Opener Tradition
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife is proposing to change the fishing opener dates, and DFW is considering “simplifying” its fishing season. However, these changes are being greeted with very mixed feelings (at the meetings across the state; Bishop's was March 20), and some are worried that the “Fishmas” traditions, so important to the Eastern Sierra, will be lost in some of the yearround fishing regions. And,
TOP NOTCH BARBER SHOP NOW BY APPOINTMENT ONLY
while the fishing season might be opened up to year-round angling, this doesn't mean that the fishing traditions will stay the same. There are many places in the Eastern Sierra, which are still frozen over, like June Lake Loop, late into April, and icefishing isn't for the inexperienced. Neither is traipsing around in the muddy bogs near the Upper Owens River, which always manages to snag more stuck off-roaders than trout. Also, stocking for year-round
Ebbetts, Monitor, Sonora, and Tioga Passes are CLOSED.
Weather: Saturday, April 27 Lone Pine: Mostly sunny Mid-80s and mid-50s. Bishop: Some clouds, maybe a shower. Mid-80s and mid-40s. Mammoth Lakes: Sunny Mid-60s and Mid-30s. Bridgeport: Sunny Upper 60s and mid-30s.
Merry Fishmas!

by the Rev. Walt Sharer Minister / Practioner-Bishop Church of Religious Science
The Nature of Spirit In many faiths; it seems that defining the nature and intention of God, or Spirit is the least understood. Perhaps all the stories of God appearing as a dove, or claiming his right to vengeance, or orchestrating the ten plaques that finally allowed the children of Israel to flee from Egypt, give clues of that misunderstanding. It is understandable that there might be some confusion when on the one hand you have the Creator of life, and on the other the taker of life; as in the first-born of Egypt. Judge Thomas Troward said, “In the first conception of spirit as the underlying origin of all things we see a universal substance which, at this point is not differentiated into specific forms.” Essentially, God does not need a body, for Spirit is not limited by form of any matter. When the Bible and other religious literature speak of Spirit in one form or the other, it is purely allegorical. Another misconception is the location of God. Jesus had to deal with this misconception with the woman at the well. She thought she would need to go to Jerusalem to worship God, but Jesus told her of the Omnipresence of Spirit. God or Spirit is not subject to or limited by time and place. Spirit is life itself. Each individual is the embodiment of Spirit. God works for man by working through him. Yet more confusion resides with good and evil. Man had to create a whole character to be the origin of evil. Incredibly, the story of creation with Adam and Eve has generated this conception by the readers not understanding what the intention of the story was. To begin with, God does not acknowledge evil, for He is of purer eyes than to behold inequity. In Genesis we read where God looked at all that had been created and called it good. Each person is setting the tone for their life by their beliefs and actions. If an individual’s negative thinking or actions bring them discomfort or pain; is it not their actions which have prevailed? While the results may appear to the individual as evil, has he not asked for less than good? Spirit sees only good, and grants your request, even though to you, it is not what you thought you wanted. Many say that God is in Heaven, but in Reality He is here, there and everywhere. Spirit is your life and without it there is no life. We are One with God. Spirit and matter can be described as idea and form. One the one hand time and space are completely absent, whereas, form is subject to time and space The evolution of form originates from idea. Thus, what your thinking about you ae bringing about. It would make no sense for the Creator of Life to effect its demise. The gift of Spirit is our life, for which we have the responsibility to direct it, and we do that with our beliefs and thinking. The perpetuation of life is Spirit’s role in our life. Enjoy it! It is All for you! God is Love and Loving You Right Now!

FISHING IN THE HIGH SIERRA AND OWENS VALLEY THE SIERRA
BY CHRISTINA REED THE HIRED PEN
T
Cover Story he Eastern Sierra is a fishing haven for many, and it has been magical for thousands of years, even before the word “recreational” was used. Native Americans in the Great Basin, the Owens Valley Paiutes, Payahüünadü, from the place of flowing water, caught small tui chub fish, and the northern Paiutes, Nüümüyaduha, still catch agai, cutthroat trout in Pyramid Lake, NV. Today, recreational fishing, and fish stocking continue a tradition that was begun in the late 1800s and early 1900s, initially in the southern Sierra, where it said commercial fish stocking was conducted by pack trains (mules and horses) venturing into the Sierra. Mule Days, Memorial Day Weekend in Bishop, CA, celebrates the heritage packing industry in the Sierra. Some of these fish were brought to Lone Pine, CA. The Sierra Club planted golden and rainbow trout on a trip to Bench Lake in 1910, and years of discovery were needed to find out which stock fish were best for which waters. The early inhabitants of the Owens Valley, both indigenous and European, also stocked the streams, creeks, rivers, and lakes nearby, to supplement their own diets. The High Sierra’s creeks, rivers, lakes, and reservoirs support a variety of fish species, including Golden trout, native to Kern County, CA; Cutthroat trout, with its large head, mouth, and jaw; Rain-
bow trout, the most commonly stocked trout in the Sierra; Brown trout, which tolerates higher water temperatures, more than other trout; Brook trout, which has many large yellowish spots and a few small red spots, with blue halos, and like the Cutthroat has a jaw which extends well behind its eyes; Lake trout, mainly in deep cold waters of Lake Tahoe and its nearby lakes; Sacramento perch (the only native western U.S. Sunfish), bluegill, smallmouth and largemouth bass, which have spiny dorsal (top) fins and are all in the Sunfish family; they like the shallow well-vegetated lakes and ponds, like Buckley Ponds, east of Bishop, CA, and Alpers trout, a real, home-grown trophy-sized species, which used to be raised on the Upper Owens River, in Mono County, CA. Fishing Season ranges from the last Saturday in April, to November 15, on most streams, lakes, and rivers, although there are special restricted areas that are accessible for year-round fishing, including the Pleasant Valley Reservoir, parts of the Owens River, parts of the East Walker River and Hot Creek in Mono County. A fishing license is necessary for anyone fishing, age 16 or older, and the license must be on your person while you are fishing. You may keep five fish a day, with 10 in possession, during the regular fishing season. Some areas, like on the Owens River below Pleasant Valley Reservoir, have special fishing regulations to protect the fisheries. Photos: Large fish photos of several species: rainbow, brown, and Tim Alpers stocking back in the day (1990s), on the Owens River, near Bishop, CA.

FISHING TRADITIONS IN THE SIERRA BY CHRISTINA REED THE HIRED PEN
For those who live for the annual fishing opener, the week leading up to “The Opener,” is an exciting time, where new equipment, baits, and old techniques and stories get brought out of the garage or closet for the season. And, there is the “Fishmas Eve” traditions, like staying up too late, due to unseasonably cold weather for campers, and reminiscing with spirits over a campfire, perhaps a bit too much. However, when dawn arrives on Saturday, April 28, this year, there will be plenty of anglers looking to get to their favorite fishing holes, or spots, and many of them will be driving boats on Crowley Lake (truly the place where most anglers congregate on opening morning). Anglers come in all shapes and sizes of vehicles, and towing a variety of trailers, boats, toy haulers, and other off-road vehicles. Some of those fishing stay and camp nearby, and others spend time in towns at RV parks, resorts, or motels. When not fishing, or even just taking a break from the fishing, many visitors go sightseeing, shopping, beer or spirits tasting, restaurant-hopping, off-roading, skiing, snow-
boarding, hiking, hot tubbing, rock hounding, exploring, biking, climbing, or running. Recreation in the High Sierra, weather permitting, can be any or nearly all-of-the-above choices. Fishing recipes are also as varied as the types of fish you catch, and what you’ll be cooking them on or inside of. Learning how to clean your catch, if you like fish dinners or tacos, is another aspect of fishing, and not everyone is keen on the cleaning part. To clean fish, be sure to be respectful of where you are cleaning them, and properly dispose of all the unused fish parts. Don’t throw them back into the creek or lake, as this just attracts all the wrong kind of attention, like animals rummaging in your trash. Cook fish quickly, and gently. All fish, regardless of age, are tender and can be fried, baked, broiled or poached, but generally not stewed. And, fish needs to be cooked over a low heat, just until the flesh flakes off nicely with a fork. Rolled Fish Fillets Recipe Three tablespoons of butter or margarine One small onion, finely chopped Six to eight fish fillets Two cups of tomatoes, canned or fresh One half cup fresh mushrooms One cup of cold water
Two tablespoons of flour Melt one tablespoon of butter in a skillet, and sauté onion, stirring constantly. Then spread the onion over the bottom of the skillet, and season the fish fillets with salt and pepper. Roll the fillets, like a jelly-roll, and arrange the rolls in the skillet over the onions. Top with the tomatoes, water, and mushrooms. Simmer about 10 minutes, or until fish is cooked. Remove the fish, and place on a platter. Now, cook the tomato sauce until it thickens, and season with salt and pepper, with the rest of the butter (two tablespoons), and flour. When everything is blended well, pour it over the fish. This recipe will feed six for supper, and takes about 20 minutes to prepare (once you have the fish fillets), and cook. Serve with wild rice, or freshly baked biscuits, or warm dinner rolls. Photos: Freshly caught rainbow trout, served with wild rice and warm biscuits can make a traditional, and heartwarming dinner during the annual fishing opener. Dip a trout (which you have cleaned, properly) in lemon juice, salt and pepper the fish, and arrange on an oiled baking pan or rap in tin foil. Bake at 350°F (degrees Fahrenheit), for 20-30 minutes, or until done.

FISHING LINGO AND EQUIPMENT BY CHRISTINA REED THE HIRED PEN Fishing is a real science, and the terms and equipment that you use make a big difference in your success rate of catching fish, or catching and releasing fish safely. Some of the most common terms and equipment for angling can be learned about in the average department store or big box outlet, however, to get the finer points of the art of fishing, you need to speak to sports shops in the area you are going to fish in, to get the best advice and techniques available to you at that time.
