Do you like Buttermilking? Front range of Sierra Nevada serves many forms

Cows grazing in the “Buttermilks,� west of Bishop, CA, are a historic business in the Eastern Sierra. Summer pastures produced diary man Joe Inman's famous buttermilk, which many miners and teamsters, and residents enjoyed 150 years ago. By Christina Reed The Hired Pen Eastern Sierra, CA—Once upon a time, there was a dairy man, who worked high in the Sierra Nevada, near the small town of Bishop, CA. Diary man Joseph Inman served buttermilk to the miners, teamsters, cowboys, lumber jacks, and townspeople in the 1870s, and his cows grazed in the high range land. Much as today, a drive in the back country allows a glimpse of what many people don't see down in the hot valleys, a very different view of moving cattle across the front range, one cow camp at a time.

The dramatic front range of the High Sierra is the backdrop for the Buttermilk region of the Eastern Sierra.

Summertime high above the hot Owens Valley finds remote cowboy camps, and cattle moving on historic range allotments. Some of the current permittees who use the range land have historic boundaries, following Inman's cows, as it were. The meadows and big vistas still support a number of other animals (a great many deer), and an experienced driver with a properly outfitted high-clearance vehicle can navigate to many points of interest along the way. Recently in history, climbing and bouldering areas were developed, among the gigantic granite boulders, with names like “The Peabodys,� “Grandma and Grandpa Peabody.� Other mining regions in the Tungsten Hills to the north, are riddled with old mining remains. Mining and ranching remain heritage businesses, and the “Buttermilks� contribute to some of Inyo County's top 10 farm production units: 1) Cattle, steers 2) Cattle Heifers 3) Hay, Alfalfa, and 6) Cattle, cows 7) Cattle, stockers, feeders 8) pasture, range and 10) sheep, and lambs.
