National Night Out 2019 Neighborhoods celebrate in downtown Bishop’s Second Annual Community Get-Together By Christina Reed The Hired Pen

Bishop, CA--“National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live.” (National Night Out campaign). This year's event, Tuesday, August 6th, was visited by a nice turn-out of neighbors, and lots of enthusiastic kids getting their faces painted, touring the police and fire departments' equipment, and trying a refreshing shaved-ice cone. Hot dogs, cookies, cole slaw, and other goodies were free to the public, and city leaders, law enforcement agencies, and communities all got together safely, with a light summer shower, and enjoyed a neighborhood block party.

Inyo County's Probation Department team were one of the National Night Out's law enforcement representatives enjoying the downtown Bishop get-together.

The City of Bishop's second annual National Night Out turned out to be a big hit with the kids who played games, toured law enforcement and fire department equipment, and ate hot dogs with shaved-ice cones. Photos by The Hired Pen

The “Mayors” of the City of Bishop served up hot dogs during the second annual National Night Out. From left: Present City of Bishop Mayor, Jim Ellis, and former City of Bishop Mayor, Joe Pecsi. Not pictured but worth the mention, former Mayor, Laura Smith, made the excellent cole slaw everyone enjoyed.

Bishop's Police Department and Fire Department equipment are always a highlight of National Night Out, and the kids are just fascinated with the trucks and cars.

At Wildcare Eastern Sierra, baby season lasts longer than at most wildlife rehabilitation facilities. We help animals from as far north as Walker and Coleville, east to Tonopah and Death Valley, south to Ridgecrest, and west into Yosemite. Elevation ranges from sea level to 10,000 feet and baby season can last close to five or six months. Just in the past week, we admitted baby ducklings, chipmunks, bats, lesser goldfinches, robins, and a young Coo-per's Hawk. Reported to us as a "baby Bald Eagle," the young raptor was found by a young boy at a Twin Lakes campground and transported by volunteers Gary and Trina. Cooper's Hawk (accipiter): Many Cooper's Hawks take advantage of the human activity of bird feeding and frequent yards where bird feeders bring in medium-sized birds (starlings, doves, quail, and jays) that are common targets for this bird-hunting raptor. They also hunt and eat chipmunks, hares, mice, squirrels, and bats. Away from people, these aerial foragers prefer forest and woodlands for both hunting and nesting. Tree nests are high in dense woods of Pines, Oaks, and Douglas Fir. After hatching, the young are tended by both parents. The young are covered with down, incapable of departing from the nest and require a significant parental investment to survive. The male continues to do most of the hunting; both provide food until about eight weeks of age when the young become independent. At this stage the youth must learn to fly, and that’s where our Cooper’s Hawk currently is in its development.

August is Child Support Awareness Month Eastern Sierra Department of Child Support Services is reaching out to the community and sharing information about its services through many activities in August. These activities are part of the annual national celebration of Child Support Awareness Month, or CSAM, in August. CSAM highlights the crucial role that child support services play in improving the lives of families and children throughout the State and nation. The agency will be asking the Inyo County Board of Supervisors to help kick off CSAM 2019 by adopting a proclamation declaring August Child Support Awareness Month and honoring the professionals who work to support the families and children of Inyo and Mono County. “Children need their parents’ support and we help make that a reality by working with parents to establish paternity, obtain medical health insurance orders, and child support orders,” Regional Director Susanne Rizo, states. “Child Support Awareness Month gives us an opportunity to share information about our services and connect with the community and families that we serve.” Child Support staff will be available at several events to celebrate CSAM in August including: August 9, 2019 Owens Valley Career Development Center’s Back to School Event from 12:00 - 2:00 p.m. located at the Bishop Paiute Cultural Center. August 11, 2019 Healthy Communities and RCA Church Back to School Event from 10:30 -1:30 p.m. located at the RCA Church in Lone Pine. August 23, 2019 Child Support Financial Workshop from 11:00 a.m.to 1:00 p.m. located at the Bishop City Council Chambers. Child Support staff will provide a financial workshop for anyone owing past due child. “This opportunity will assist persons owing support in making payment plans or developing strategies top help them reduce the child support debt they carry,” Rizo states. Payment plan samples, mediation services available, and information and assistance with applying to the Compromise of Arrears Program (COAP) for forgiveness of past due support owed to the State of California will be provided. The family services community is also invited to attend a Paternity Opportunity Program Training on August 28th from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the U.S. Forest Service Office, Main Conference Room. Presenter Tori House, POP Analyst with the State Department of Child Support Services, will provide training to health providers, social services agencies and other community partners about the importance of establishing paternity for minors born out of wedlock. The public is welcomed to attend with a RSVP. Light refreshments will be provided. To participate please contact Amy Weurdig at (760)8721153. The Use of Mind

by the Rev. Walt Sharer Minister / Practioner-Bishop Church of Religious Science

What Do You Expect? Ernest Holmes tells us, “There is a Power in the Universe greater than we are, and we can use it.” All the Power and energy is available to us, working through us. Such Power shapes destinies, turns the tide of expectancies from failure to reaching goals, beyond what may have been imagined. This Power has unlimited potential, only limited by the fear or trepidation of the one using it. To utilize that Power effectively and to advantageous advantage we must investigate our expectancy in all areas of our life. No matter the prayer or type of prayer, the expectation of results rules the day. There is only One Mind and that Mind is the Mind of God, and we are all using it. Each one of us utilizes that Mind in different ways, which differs by background, ideals, beliefs and training. There are optimists, pessimists and some place in between, in every situation and circumstance, and they are interchangeable positions depending on the subject matter. From this criteria each of us develops an expectation of results from prayer or hopes and dreams. I have had numerous clients that would confront some negative situation like a marital situation, a financial set back, or strained human relationships, say, “I always knew this was going to happen.” They may have hoped for the best in all events, but their deep down expectations wormed their way into the equation. Bear in mind that an expectation is an unwritten, unspoken prayer for its fruition. So, the question that begs an answer becomes, “How do I change my expectations to match the results I desire?” So many factors lead to the expectations you have formulated. Your parentage, your teaching, your religious training, your siblings and friends, and even the opinions and discussions of the media, have shaped your expectations. Every discussion of expectations should begin with why you are here. What was the purpose for your life? Is God for you? Do I have the ability to improve my expectations? Let us begin with your purpose for being here on earth. The Bible tells us we were made in the image and after the likeness of God. God is Life. Life is Spirit. You have Life acting as Spirit to maximize your experience. You and I were created to succeed. The Power for good has always been with you. Unfortunately, harsh religious training has made many a soul think they were always on trial, and God is the ultimate judge, jury and executioner. Perfection being God can only create perfection being you. You may not have considered yourself as perfect. You may be able to point to places you were less that perfect, failures or lack of good judgment, however; God is of such purity, it cannot see the limited. It only sees you in all your potential. Holmes tells us, “There is no sin but a mistake, and no punishment but a consequence.” Again, the Bible says, “We have all sinned and come short of the glory of God.” So we have all made mistakes, and on our journey of life we will probably make a few more. A child saying, “Two plus two equals five,” is not traumatized, when he is corrected, and neither should we when we make a mistake. All of it is part of learning. Look on yourself as God looks on you. Perfect, Spiritual and Divine. Your expectation will improve along with the quality of your life and those around you. God is Love and Loving You Right Now!
