Protecting your eyes, a gateway to your brain

Eastern Sierra, CA—Human eyes are remarkable sensory organs, and the eyes bring information to the brain, so eye health throughout life is very important.

Dr. Thomas Reid, an ophthalmologist specialist, with more than 30 years of experience performing eye / eyelid surgeries, began his practice in Bishop, CA, in 1995. Dr. Reid was the Chief of Surgery for three years at Northern Inyo Hospital, and he performed many of the surgeries with the use of new technology, and state-ofthe-art medical procedures.

Dr. Reid is now joined in his office by Dr. David Todd, an Optometric Physician, who did a fellowship in optometry at Bascom Palmer, which along with attending Johns Hopkins (where Dr. Reid also attended); and Dr. Todd is also a combat veteran of the United States Marine Corps.

Protecting Your Gateway to Your Brain

Understanding that eye health is a life-long process, Dr. Reid helped outline some beneficial eye health and eye care guidelines. Most of these suggestions are simple, affordable, and can be incorporated into a person’s life, at the earliest of ages. And, some of these healthful suggestions have become more important during the pandemic.

Avoid rubbing your eyes, and wash your hands often. Protect your eyes from the sun, with sunglasses. Stay hydrated, and Dr. Reid notes, being well-hydrated can help with dry eyes too. Don’t smoke. Eat a balanced diet, stay active, and get a good night’s sleep.

Dr. Reid says an eye exam can help individuals, with an exam every two years after age 40. Eye exams should occur more often if you have diabetes (under the age of

40 for an exam), and an exam can check for signs of macular degeneration, and glaucoma also.

Protect your eyes when working with power tools, welding, or using grinders, with goggles. Sports activities, like skiing, snowboarding, motorcycling, off-roading are other good places for goggles to be worn. And, ski goggles don’t offer proper protection from serious eye injuries for shooting sports, including paint-balling enthusiasts. Paint-ballers, and even gel blasters need shatter-proof, wrap-around glasses or goggles!

As we age, Dr. Reid says, some ocular vitamins can be beneficial for individuals with macular degeneration. However, staying healthy overall, and getting proper medical exams as we age, these are the recommendations for the health of your eyes and vision. And, protecting the gateway to your brain, your eyes, starts early and continues, thoughtfully, throughout your life span.

2018 RAM TRADESMAN, Crew Cab,4x, 6 cylinder engine. Has 84,000 miles, very good condition, includes ARE camper shell. Having engine light issues, dealership and other mechanics cannot decide what the issue is and I have been told everything from it needing lifters, needing new rocker arm, needing head gaskets to needing a new upper end, maybe warped heads, to needing new engine. Runs well, starts a bit shakey, does not leak any fluids or “show any antifreeze in the oil”. Tired of dealing with it and looking for a mechanically inclined person to buy it.
