COPD: Do you have this disease?

Chances are high that you know someone with COPD, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It’s the fourth leading cause of death in the U.S., and more than 16 million Americans have been diagnosed with it. But according to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), millions more people have COPD and don’t realize it. Could you or someone you know be among them? Here are some clues: COPD typically comes on slowly. You may start experiencing shortness of breath while doing everyday activities, and though it’s easy to think of this as just a part of “getting older,” often it’s not. Shortness of breath is a common—and potentially dangerous—symptom of COPD, so see a health professional as soon as you can. And watch for other symptoms—ongoing coughing; wheezing; and excessive production of sputum, a mixture of saliva and mucus. COPD can progress quickly and make it increasingly difficult to breathe. Often by the time people see a health professional, their lungs’ ability to work properly has been significantly impaired, so don’t delay. Without treatment, COPD can prevent you from doing basic activities, such as walking and dressing. COPD: Why me? While COPD takes a devastating toll across many populations and regions, researchers now know that certain people are at increased risk of developing the disease, including those who smoke or have smoked cigarettes. About 75 percent of COPD cases are caused by smoking, but people who have never smoked can also develop COPD, and scientists are continuously working to understand why. Long-term exposure to secondhand smoke and other lung irritants such as air pollution, chemical fumes and dusts from the environment or workplace can put you at risk. If you have a rare genetic condition known as alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, your risk rises. Race, sex and where you live can be influencers, as well. In the past, COPD often had been labeled a man’s disease. Yet, women are 30 percent more likely than men to have COPD. And while the vast majority of people diagnosed are white, COPD affects some other ethnic groups disproportionally. For example, COPD is more common among multiracial or American Indian/Alaska Native adults, but less common among Asian, African American and Hispanic populations. Variances can be found geographically, too. COPD is twice as common in rural areas than in urban parts of the country. Many people with COPD can be found in southeastern parts of the U.S., such as Kentucky and Virginia, the Carolinas, and in areas of the Mississippi and Ohio River Valleys, where more rural communities are located. COPD: What to do now? Visit COPD Learn More Breathe Better, a program by the NHLBI, part of the National Institutes of Health, at COPD.nhlbi.nih.gov to learn more. The key to keeping COPD at bay—or preventing it from getting worse—is to understand and recognize the signs and symptoms early and discuss the disease with a health professional. The sooner this happens, the sooner you or your loved one can get back to doing the things you love.

Owensville “Home is where your story begins By Christina Reed The Hired Pen Owensville, CA—in the eastern Sierra--Home is where your story begins, says Annie Hutchinson. So true, for a stone cabin-start for the Owens Valley, deep in the eastern Sierra, of California’s least understood region. The years between 1861 and 1871 saw a lot of change, and corner lots were selling for as high as $1500. Timber was at a premium, and many of Owensville’s oldest treasures are, an old stone building, made of tufa stone, carted from near another gold mining camp, Benton, at a reach called Comanche Gulch, or perhaps the old Bly quarry in Round Valley, where the rocks were hand cut / quarried. By 1864, there were two new producing mines, the Southern Belle gathered most of the attention, and the Golden Wedge, a part of the Southern Belle, was worth a look-see. Robert Morrison, later killed at Convict Lake, and Charles Nunn are credited with the Southern Belle’s discovery. The Inyo Company was formed in 1864, by the energetic Mr. Thomas H. Soper, and his son, John, and they immediately seized on the notion of creating a reduction plant, near current day Fish Slough, and they began processing large ore, at “Swansea Flat. Ox teams and horses went back and forth from the arrastra, which was used to crush the materials, including non-gold bearing, mostly clear quartz for bricks. The main trading for Owensville was at Aurora, by way of Hot Springs, as Benton was called. *(1) (2) (3) (5) Photo 5 A Mule, miner and ore carts were a start for *)('&%$&#"!( ! & &) ) & %& !&* ( ( &) !)& (& the 1860s. The town of Owensville became a Cinderella of sorts, transforming into the bustling railroad town of Laws, complete with hotel, rooming houses, barber shop, freight masters, cattlemen traders, sheepherders taking their stock to rail, and a host of other ventures, never imagined. Fruit ranches, like Red Mountain or Giroux Orchards, pack stations in nearby canyons, pasture land irrigated by numerous ditches / canals, and many railroad side stations created a lush valley setting for entrepreneurs. Loading docks and stock pens were erected at Laws to accommodate the vast sized herds of stock being brought to the rail lines, and ranches dotted the landscape around old Owensville. *(1) (2) (3) (5) Photo 9 Much of what had been Owensville was the Owens River, to towns in the southern part of the Owens Valley. The Use of Mind

by the Rev. Walt Sharer Minister / Practioner-Bishop Church of Religious Science

Build Your Dream God is Spirit, and out of Spirit everything was created. Raymond Charles Barker wrote, “Spirit, Soul and Body; the infinite Presence offering Itself as Its own creation. Man, the means by which It gives itself into form through the Soul, is a living idea. The world around man is of his own creation, for he has fashioned it with ideas.” Ideas are converted from mind to form every where you look. Every structure everywhere, furniture, clothing, lighting and even the electrical grid supplying the structure began with an idea in one or more souls, which gave rise to form. You may not have built the structure you are living in, however: Your ideas are building the world around you. Your ideas go forth and draw the right people, situations and circumstances to bring the idea to form. This process is continuing and on-going throughout your day. Every idea is creative, gets to work immediately, but ill formed ideas can only produce limited form. Belief plays a key role in the formation of ideas. Negative or even ignorant belief often formulate destructive ideas, which in turn, creates blockage to your real desire. The formula of succession is belief, to ideas, to thoughts, to manifestation. Jesus and many others said, “It is done unto us as we believe.” You may not know what you have believed consciously, but reverse engineering the forms in your world will reveal the beliefs that brought them into manifestation. People that believe in prosperity are prosperous, those that believe in poverty realize the result of that belief. Likewise with health, if you believe that everybody will get sick sometime, you will get sick sometime. It all sounds like a very simple process, but degrees of belief can make it complicated. Of course the answer to all of this is to believe you are Perfect, Spiritual and Divine, then no negative condition will stand a chance of manifesting. You will be a healthy, happy child of the Most High. This is all good and true, however; getting to that level of belief requires a bit of effort on your part. Limited belief must be cast out and replaced with unlimited belief. Mary Baker Eddy tells us to stand guard of what we allow to enter into your mind. Allow no evil or limited thought residence in you mind. That doesn’t mean to hide your head in the sand, like an ostrich. It means to look through limitation and see the truth. For example: We can accept that many people live in poverty, but that is because they have chosen it, whether by ignorance or by accepting it without challenge. Jesus said, “The poor you will have with you always.” The poor in spirit usually do not even attempt to change their condition. The poor, the sick and the miserable continue in their ways until they change their underlying beliefs. There have been a number of poor people that have won the lottery. You would think that would solve the problem of poverty thinking, but most of them end up in worst shape than before. You were born into this world to succeed. It is the Divine Plan for your life. Start accepting good into your life now. Good in all forms. Turn away from limitation and ugliness. Look at what you want to see. Let affirmations of good into your life by repeating daily Say to yourself, “Everyday I am getting better and better,” “I am healthy and wise,” I have what I need when I need it.” Make up your own affirmations and repeat them when you need them. And when you pray, you are not trying to change the Mind of God, but your mind. Conditions change as your belief in them changes. Try it and stick with it and you will behold the change you desire. God is Love and Loving You Right Now!
