Mammoth Lakes Podiatry
Fixing feet is what is fulfilling By Christina Reed The Hired Pen Eastern Sierra, CA—There are 7.7 billion humans estimated to be on the planet Earth today. This means there are 7.7 billion human bipeds (an animal that walks on two legs with two feet) on the surface of Earth, which translates into roughly 15-plus billion human feet. Podiatry is the treatment of feet and their ailments, and this includes correcting foot problems related to how we stand and walk. And, if you think your feet aren't important for your particular bearing on this planet, think on your feet, again. From cradle to grave, our hands and feet literally help us navigate Earth. Similar in some physiological structures, hands and feet help us get to information, gather information, and are our balances in our endeavors. Think that your information gathering would function as well without your big toe or thumb? Would you think your littlest toe or pinkie finger isn't necessary for balancing your foot or hand? Mammoth Lakes Podiatry is opening up medical services full time in the region this month, and the doctors and staff are addressing the needs of an “under-served” area, says Dr. Bobby Pourziaee, DPM (Doctor of Podiatric Medicine). Mammoth Lakes Podiatry adds Dr. Tatum Brace DPM to its offices; the practice started in 2006, in Mammoth Lakes, CA, when Dr. Pourziaee began a part-time business in the eastern Sierra, dividing time with his office in Beverly Hills, CA. Dr. Pourziaee is a long-time outdoor recreationist in the Sierra, enjoys skiing in Mammoth Lakes, and says, being in his practice here allows him to have a “nice balance” in his career. “It's such a joy to work here,” he notes. “To be appreciated,” and thanked for services is a “rewarding” aspect of his business, and he's been here long enough to be treating a couple of generations of clients. Mammoth Lakes Podiatry serves a “continuum of care,” Dr. Pourziaee explains, and this speaks to the nature of our feet. Over time, with stress (since your feet bear all of our weight, and act as a lever to propel you forward), with injury, with age, our feet need looking after, regularly. By age 50, we average 75,000 miles of walking. WOW! (Source: Webmd.com) Dr. Pourziaee says children (age five or under) are in developmental phases with their feet, and kids should have a check-up of feet, like eyes, ears, nose, mouth, and teeth. A lot can be fixed if intervention is provided in treating issues with feet. Good fitting shoes, and proper support in quality shoes can affect a young person's feet, posture, gate, balance, and physiological development. We all know what too tight fitting shoes feel like. And, extreme athletes, runners, mountaineers, skiers, snowboarders, hikers, rodeo contestants, motorcycle riders, and those yet undiscovered, all know one thing well. Your feet and shoes are a part of your assets and life in that event. Medical conditions, like diabetes, are often found in earlier stages, by our feet. A poorly trimmed set of toe nails, a cut, can mean infections in people with medical conditions. Mammoth Lakes Podiatry offers medical pedicures, and sterile treatments for individuals with medical conditions which might restrict them from non-medical treatments. Preventative and proactive med-
Mammoth Lakes Podiatry's doctors and staff are expanding services to full time foot care, with the addition of Dr.Tatum Brace DPM this month. From left: Michele Buckman (Medical Assistant), Diane Cattabriga (Nurse Practicioner), Dr. Bobby Pourziaee, Dr. Tatum Brace, and Brandie Scott (Office Manager). ical procedures are covered by Medicare, and other approved PPOs, which can make these treatments real positive medical opportunities. Dr. Tatum Brace starts this month as Mammoth Lakes Podiatry's full time doctor, and she's spending the majority of her time serving clients in Bishop. A native of McAllen, Texas, she has a family of podiatrists who have encouraged her passion for the medical field. A Texas A & M University undergraduate, she finished medical school at Western University of Health Sciences, and residency at Baylor Scott & White Hospital. While new to the West, she's been on an alpine hike, taken in Mammoth's festivals, and is trying her hand at trout fishing. She's got a real enthusiasm for kicking off her first practice in podiatry. “Everything” podiatric intrigues her. “Every inch [of the foot].” She feels being with Mammoth Lakes Podiatry is a “good fit,” and she also speaks Spanish. She is currently working towards being on staff at Northern Inyo Hospital. Podiatrists Can... A doctor of podiatric medicine can: provide you with foot health care specialists; help with day-to-day foot care; treat foot, ankle, and other leg structures; perform surgeries; reset broken SEE PODIATRY CONTINUED ON PAGE 5

An important message for Inyo County voters Kammi Foote, Inyo County Clerk, reminds voters that there are several important changes that citizens should be aware of when preparing to vote in the upcoming Presidential Primary election. Last year, the California legislature move the primary election date up to March 3, 2020 – also known as “Super Tuesday”. In addition, the Presidential and County Central Committee contests will be conducted as traditional modified closed primaries – meaning that if you are registered with a political party, you will receive a ballot with only the candidates that have the same party preference as your most recent voter registration record. If you are not registered with a political party preference, you will receive a letter from the elections office letting you know how to request a ballot with the candidates of your choice. The elections office encourages all voters to check the status and party preference of their voter record using the following website: https://voterstatus.sos .ca.gov/ There are several local offices up for election at the March 3, 2020 Presidential Primary Election: Supervisor Districts 2, 4 & 5 Judge of the Superior Court 1 Judge of the Superior Court 2 County Central Committee Persons interested in running for one of these positions may pick up paperwork to circulate and file their petitions for signatures in lieu of filings fees beginning on September 12, 2019. Declaration of Candidacy forms and Nomination papers can be filed beginning on November 12, 2019. The last day to file for one of these offices is December 6, 2019. For further information about running for office in Inyo County you can view the Candidate’s Guide located on the Inyo County Clerk/Record-er’s Website at elections.inyocounty.us. If you have any questions or need additional information, please contact the Election’s Department at 760-878-0224.

The Use of Mind
by the Rev. Walt Sharer Minister / Practioner-Bishop Church of Religious Science
Infinite Choice-Makers Each individual has been given unlimited abilities have the experience of perfect health, unlimited prosperity and harmonious living. If they are lacking in one or all of those categories it is because of the choices they have made. We are Infinite Choice-Makers. Whether we know it or not, we are making choices continually. Some choices we ponder over, but many are made unconsciously. The people, places and things appear in the individual’s world by way of choice. A person looking for the fly in the ointment will always find a fly in the ointment. That is a choice disguised as a conditioned reflex, because the circumstances and conditions have been set up by the person’s habitual thought process. Our conscious and subconscious mind constitute our consciousness. Consciousness is not static; in that it can be changed so that improved living conditions can be attained. When we look at our life and begin to realize that everything we behold is somehow brought to being by our choices; then we may want to do something about it. Blame has no place in our consciousness. We drew those people or those situations into our life. We may not know that we did it, but our choice was involved. If beauty is desired, beauty must be seen. Stop looking for the flaw: start looking for good and praise it. It has been said that we are creatures of habit, but we have the choice to accept or reject the habits which have kept us sick, poor and unhappy. Habits of thought; habits of action and habits of attitude play a major role in each person’s life. The choice to make changes reside within the individual. Life long habits can be challenging but doable, however; there must be a conscious commitment for it to work. If the choice is made to improve the quality of life, it must be remembered that this is one of countless other choices to be made. Each decision leads to another and another after that. To make those choices requires conscious thought. There is no auto-pilot thinking. Making a game out making changes has been proven to make the process enjoyable. As progress takes place, even the choices get better. Many have not thought that health was a choice or that poverty was the luck of the draw, But the acceptance of limitation is still a choice. My teacher would frequently tell me, “You can have what you say.” Particularly when I was being negative. Your whole being is involved with the choices you make. Start see the good and only good that the Bible says that God saw. God is Love and Loving You Right Now!

The Best in the Desert Race 2019
Determination ruled finishing this off-road race By Christina Reed The Hired Pen Las Vegas to Reno, NV—Determination ruled finishing the United State's longest off-road race through much of Nevada's western desert and mountain region on August 16. The Best in the Desert Race began at dawn The 23rd running of The Best in the Desert Race 2019 is in the books, with 154 com- on Friday, with petitors finishing the ultimate desert off- 370 entrants in road race. Seen here, racers in the Trick an assortment of Truck class come into Pit 6, Millers, NV, for classes (types of a very quick tire change, fueling, and dust vehicles) all wipe-down. vying for a place in the grueling race. Not everyone who began the race finished, with dust, high temperatures (in the triple-digits), road hazards (like rocks), and mechanical issues claiming most of those (known by DNF, meaning Did Not Finish), who started bright and early Friday morning. Motorcycles and quads were the first off the starting line, giving the racers a substantial head start, so the faster vehicles coming next, wouldn't get positioned com-
peting with trucks and motorcycles. Then the super fast trick trucks, ATVs (turbo-charged), and pre-runner-type made trucks (ie, Ford) were off and running; followed by the Jeeps, classic vehicles, dune buggies, VW bugs, and other classes. This 500-mile race is run in one day, but 24 hours are given for all finishers, due to the length and difficulty of this off-road series. Racers began in Beatty, NV, at Texas Station, and finishers were greeted in Fallon, NV, and an awards ceremony was held on August 17, at the Sparks Nugget. The Pit 6 at Millers, Nevada The pit stop 6, at Millers, NV, along US Highway 6 / US Highway 95, was the happening place to see the race vehicles, team sponsors, and their chase and pit crews in action. The pit stop was the first for many, who had driven 208-race miles by then. The drivers and navigators stopped briefly to exchange drivers, fuel up (most of the trick trucks only get two mpg, with 80 to 100-gallon gas tanks), change the 37-inch gnarly tires, get re-hydrated, and all had the dust wiped from visors, headlights, and off they went to some of the most challenging sections of this very, very, long race. Averaging between 60-65 mph over the course, at top speeds along the desert of 120 mph, the racers arriving first at the checkered flag finish
Pit crews jumped into action as Wade Porter, from Chico, CA, #53, driving the Brenthel made trick truck, stopped at Pit 6, Millers, NV, for fuel, tires, and water. Porter came in 57th overall in the race, and finished in 18th place in the trick truck class. Porter finished in 10:42.4 (10 hours, 42 minutes, and 4 seconds).
in Dayton, NV clocked in at eight to nine hours. Bryce Menzies, from Las Vegas, NV, won The Best in the Desert Race overall (including trick truck class) in his Ford trick truck, #7, in 8:10.35 (8 hours, 10 minutes, and 35 seconds). Just to finish this beast was a win for most!
The Brenthel racers from around the world included Richard Armstrong from Peace River, Alberta, Canada, driving a trick truck, #61. Armstrong finished 15th in the overall race, and ninth in his class, with a time of 9:21.31 (9 hours, 21 minutes, and 31 seconds).
Flying along The Best in the Desert Race course, just beyond Blair Junction Pit 7, one of the Murray brothers, Jason, from Santa Ana, CA, drives the UTV Turbo charged Can Am, #T917. Murray finished the race in 9:57.45 (9 hours, 57 minutes, and 45 seconds), earning him 31st position in the overall race, and coming in second place in the UTV Turbo class. Photos by The Hired Pen
