The Hired Pen “We come from a world of expedition”--Tina Sjögren, CEO, co-founder of Pythom Space Eastern Sierra, CA—The small town of Bishop, CA, in the eastern Sierra, seems an unlikely place to find people building a human interplanetary space travel vehicle. Remote, and not in the center of the high tech, Silicon Valley, world, the unassuming building on Willow Street in Bishop was a topic of conversation and curiosity, until the Eiger space rocket made its appearance outside. Then, the talk took a different turn toward the skies and the deep space beyond, which is exactly where Tina and Tom Sjögren see themselves going in the next few years. The couple started the ambitious project about two years ago (2019). And, like Elon Musk, with his SpaceX, the Sjögrens, and Pythom Space, are one of only two peo ple looking to make it to interplanetary travel to Mars. But, what makes the Sjögrens’ rocket factory different is their philosophy, and how they got to where they are in the Aerospace Exploringindustry.

She points out that you can mine what you find on an asteroid, however, you’ll never own the asteroid. And, Tina also notes that space has some dominate countries involved, in these resources, including China.

Leads to Inventions, and Interplanetary Space Travel
Polar expeditions taught them a great deal about themselves, and their goals. “We are ex tremely goal-oriented,” Tom notes, and he adds, the couple read the Greek and Roman classics, not space books. With time, trial and error, and expedition-wisdom accumulating, the couple began to narrow the advice they’d received from other explorers down to a sim ple list of about 10 things they needed to do, every day, to remain successful. These maxims (short sayings) became the core of the expeditions to the poles, and they took a Sharpie pen, and wrote these sayings on their expedition tent’s ceiling, for reviewing every day, as Tina “Wedescribes.made a pact deal,” says Tom. “We would say only positive things to each other.” In a video the couple made to share their polar expeditions, they outline their trip by listing the “Messages from the Poles.” Important pieces of wisdom: don’t undercut your survival; the winner moves when others rest; go for both poles; seek out winners; get out each morning; face the storm; say only positive things to each other, and you don’t have to believe in suc cess to win. The couple’s philosophy also incorporates the notion that “every true success is a mankind joint venture,” and that if you want to reach the impossible, you just keep going.
When I inquire how the couple feels about coincidences versus science, Tina jumps right in and adds, “All [of] science came out of coincidences.” And, instead of the “wor ship of smarts,” Tom adds, it’s more about a “worship of strength,” which intrigues the rocket builders. They share an example of this by describing their 15 minutes with Mother Theresa, and “the great impact on our lives,” Tina concludes. Tom also adds that they learned a great deal by studying and reading about the Norwegian explorer, Tom and Tina Sjögren stand beside the Pythom Space Eiger Launcher at their Bishop, CA rocket factory. The Sjögrens plan on a “launch anytime from anywhere,” and their goals are to invent and create a human-rated space transportation system, with rockets, landers, and spaceships to explore Earth, Mars, the Moon, and asteroids.
“We come from a world of expedition,” says Tina, and not just any kind of exploration ei ther. The couple hold numerous Guinness Book World Records (notably the Three Poles Challenge), and they aren’t afraid to tackle some of the most extreme expeditions on the planet Earth. Tina and Tom took on climbing Mt. Everest (1999), then clicked off skiing unsupported to the South Pole (2001-2002), and then the professional explorers made it to the North Pole, skiing unsupported in a Guinness Book Record record of 118 days (2002). Tina became the first female to ski unsupported and complete the Three Poles Challenge, which includes summiting Mt. Everest, and conquering the two poles of the world. The couple invented along the way to the poles, creating a lightweight satellite communication software and some hardware, which lead to an award by Aerospace defense and review, as one of the top 10 space tech solution providers. The competition was the DARPA (the Unit ed States’ Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) challenge, where they were selected as one of the top 10 finalists.

“The Big Klondike in Space” Tom and Tina have been in the United States for about 20 years, and they previously lived in Sweden (where Tom was born). Tom was in software design, and so was Tina, and following a life in the Bay Area, the couple decided to move to the eastern Sierra to live and build their factory. Their goals are to invent and create a human-rated space transportation system, with rockets, landers, and spaceships to explore Earth, Mars, the Moon, and asteroids. Tom is the Chief Tech Officer, but everyone gets involved in working on the rocket. They plan on their first space launch in 2026, and they continue to move for ward, meeting their deadlines. They created a prototype propulsion system, and are now working on developing the Eiger Launcher. These advancements will enable the Olympus Lander, Kang Rocket, and Pythom Spaceships to be utilized for interplanetary space travel. The rocket factory is staffed by a small group of non-typical space engineers / builders, and the lack of formal space academia is another one of the trademarks of Pythom Space. Tom calls the building approach “purpose-driven research,” and the couple also credits “nature,” with inspirations. They have enjoyed working together, building the rocket, and taking lunch breaks in Bishop Creek reminds them of how lucky they are to be in the High Sierra. The “mountains” are the main lure for Tom and Tina, and the outdoors give the couple a chance to think about their future business decisions.

Jeffery
Born on July 14th 1955 to Herbert and Dolores Galvin, Jeff was the youngest of their two children. He grew up in Benton where he first learned to hunt and fish and it was there, his love of the White Mountains first took root. He attended school at Edna Beaman until the start of high school, where he transitioned to Bish op Union High School (BUHS). It was during these 4 years; Jeff built the foundation of lifelong friendships that he greatly treasured. These friendships became the cornerstone of his life, as decades worth of memories were cen tered around this special group of individuals. Jeff graduated from BUHS in June of 1973. On September 11th of that same year, Jeff had his first date with Christy Courtney. By June of 1974 he proposed to Christy on her high school graduation night. They wed October 26th, 1974 in Bishop. This October would have marked 48 years of love and commitment to one another. In 1976 Jeff started work for the Operating Engineers (Local Chapter 12). It was at this time Jeff and Christy started their family. First welcoming their oldest child Chad in Oc tober of 1977, followed by Wendy in August of 1979. Jeff loved his children immensely and found great joy in their many accomplishments. Jeff proved to be a father figure to many, as his children’s friends sought refuge in his home. He loved being the “hang out house” during those years and you could always find him in the middle of all the action!
Jeff is proceeded in death by his father Herb Galvin, stepfather Bud Walkington, sister Denise Cafe’, and nephew Dominic Galvin. He is survived by his mother Dolores Walk ington, wife Christy, son Chad and wife Katie Galvin, daughter Wendy and husband Nate Derr. Lastly, he is survived by his five grandchildren; Levi, Tatum, Taylor Derr, Leah, and Walker Galvin, who he loved with his whole heart. A celebration of life is scheduled for September 10th 2022, at 1pm at the VFW Post 484 Short Street in Bishop. Tri-tip lunch to be served. Please bring a favorite salad or side dish to share.
Together, Jeff and Christy started Jeff Galvin Landscaping in early 1985, which he owned and operated for the last 37 years. Jeff ran his business with a great deal of integ rity. He was honest, brutally direct, and worked with a level of detail and perfectionism most could not understand. He was an incredible operator, valued for his precision and accuracy. His customers greatly appreciated and valued his work ethic, knowing the job would always be done right. Jeff donated his time and talents to many community projects throughout the years. There were few things Jeff loved more than the mountains and deer hunting. A local leg end in his own right, Jeff had the skill set and incredible patience to hold out for only the best bucks. The mountains to the east he knew better than most, as he spent a lifetime in them. The sacred traditions of hunting he learned in those mountains; he instilled in the ones he cherished the most. Jeff was a stark traditionalist. He never missed an opener on Crowley, the Mule Day’s parade, camping in Belmont in the Spring or Male Bonding in July. Jeff loved fishing, the voice of Vince Scully and all things Dodgers and Rams. He was never afraid of a good time, the dance floor, or a cold Coors Light. He was friends to so many, all of which cherished his quick wit and loved his one of kind smirk.

Keith Galvin
Jeffery Keith Galvin, age 67, died unexpectedly on Au gust 10th, 2022. High in the beautiful White Moun tains, Jeff took his final breath overlooking beautiful Bishop and his family below. Long rooted in the Ow ens Valley, Jeff took great pride in the Galvin family’s deep heritage. He was proud his grandchildren were fifth generation to the valley and when asked, he couldn’t imagine life anywhere else.
