Bishop Paiute Tribal Council and Bishop Paiute Development Corporation

Tribe celebrated two groundbreaking ceremonies By Christina Reed The Hired Pen Bishop, CA—A pair of groundbreaking ceremonies were celebrated last week, on August 22, for the Bishop Paiute Tribe's casino expansion and West Line Street gas station and retail center projects. With shovels in hand, members of the Bishop Paiute Tribal Council and the Bishop Paiute Development Corporation met at the open area behind the current Paiute Palace Casino and later at the corner of See Vee Lane and West Line Street, to turn the first dirt on these projects. Bishop Paiute Tribal Chairman Allen Summers, Sr. “thanked” everyone who had “worked hard” on the projects at the groundbreaking ceremonies. “The Bishop Paiute Tribe is extremely excited to get these projects started. It will increase education, infrastructure, social and cultural values of the tribe,” said Summers in a press release from the Bishop Tribal Council. Ms. Teri Red Owl, Bishop Paiute Development Corporation Chairperson stated in the same release, “We're excited about this project and the benefit the gas station and retail center will have on the community.” “The Bishop Paiute Tribal Council and the Bishop Paiute Development Corporation broke ground today (August 22, 2019) on a $16.5 million Casino Expansion Project and the $6.5 million West Line Street Gas Station and Retail Center project,” the press release stated. “The Casino Expansion Project is one of the largest projects the Bishop Paiute Tribe

The Bishop Paiute Tribal Council and the Bishop Paiute Development Corporation were busy with two groundbreaking ceremonies on the new casino expansion, and the new gas station and retail center projects, both located on the tribal lands in Bishop, CA. has undertaken in some time. The casino expansion is going to be attached to the existing casino to the south. The expansion will add 28,000 SF of new floor space with a capacity for up to 500 gaming machines, new restaurant, bar and deli, and outdoor patios.” The Paiute Palace Casino is working on a new brand for the casino, which it said “will be unveiled soon.” “The new gas station project is partially funded by the U.S. Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration (EDA) which awarded a $2.1 million grant to the Bishop Paiute Tribe to apply towards the infrastructure of a retail center and business incubator to be located at the NE corner of See Vee Lane and West Line Street (SR 168). The remaining funds are being provided by the Bishop Paiute Tribe. This project will provide up to 98 jobs and allow tribal members to pursue their own businesses. With the support from EDA, the Tribe can more closely realize self-determination,” the press release continued. “In addition, we will be adding six new gas pumps which includes four standard and two RV / truck pumps, a 6,000 SF convenience store with delie and indoor and outdoor seating, an 8,000 SF-six unit retail center and car wash.” The Bishop Paiute Tribe is a federally recognized Indian tribe located on its 879acre Bishop Paiute Reservation in Inyo County, CA. The Reservation was formed under Congressional Act 5299, P.L. No. 43, April 20, 1937.

OBITUARY JOHN FRED WEDBERG On Wednesday August 14, 2019, John Fred Wedberg, loving husband and father of three children entered eternal life after 90 adventurous years on earth. John was born on September 21, 1928 in Redlands, CA to Fred and Vivian Wedberg. He was a Sergeant Major in the Army serving during the Korean War then passed his brokerage exam in 1956. He worked as a stockbroker until his retirement in 1993. On December 7, 1965 he married Patricia Ann Wedberg. They raised two sons and one daughter. John had a passion for music; with a deep knowledge and appreciation for jazz from the 30s and 40s era. He shared that love gracing the airwaves of the Eastern Sierra with a radio show on the Sierra Wave for 14 years. He began playing jazz piano in elementary school and continued playing his entire life. For many years local residents planned their Sunday’s once each month around seeing his band For The Love Of Swing play at Whiskey Creek. He also regularly shared his music with residents at the Bishop Care Center and Sterling Heights, the Soup Kitchen and the Methodist Church. John had a love for vintage cars. The first car he owned after high school was a Model A Ford. Over the course of his life he always had a Model A Ford in his garage. After moving to Bishop in 1993 he helped found the Eastern Sierra chapter of the Model A Ford Club of America. Another passion he shared was a deep love for the outdoors. His mountaineering resume includes numerous peak ascents throughout the Sierra, 28 climbs in the Alps, and one volcano in Mexico. He learned how to ski in the late 50s and continued backcountry skiing for the next 45 years going on countless ski tours in the Sierra. He was involved in several sections of the Sierra Club. He was a founding member of the Sierra Peaks Section, and was active with the Rock Climbing Section, Ski Mountaineers Section, Alpine Ski Touring Committee, New Member’s Committee, and the Baldy Hut Committee. Anybody who shared an adventure with John quickly learned of his infectious nature and he always enjoyed sharing that love with eager folks wishing to learn about the outdoors. John was also active in the Methodist Church. He served as chairman of the Finance Committee in Santa Monica. After moving to Bishop he played piano and hand bells during services in addition to spearheading the building fund which led to the completion of the Methodist Church’s Social Hall in Bishop, which is now a blessing to many events including the Soup Kitchen that continues to be a great outreach ministry to the Bishop community. Other interests included a love of flying and a passion for fly fishing and could be seen tying his own flies in the evenings. John was preceded in death by his father Fred, mother Vivian, and sister Hilda May. He is survived by his wife Patricia, his three children Kurt, Christina, and Troy, his brother Hale Lee, two grandchildren, several nephews, and one niece. A service will be held on Saturday, August 31, 2019 at the First United Methodist Church, 205 N Fowler St, Bishop CA 93514 at 4:30pm. Flowers and donations may be sent In Memory of John Wedberg, 369 E Pine St, Bishop CA 93514.

The Use of Mind

by the Rev. Walt Sharer Minister / Practioner-Bishop Church of Religious Science

The Creative Power of Love How do we define love? We have all had the feeling. Maybe it was only mother’s love or the love of a pet. For eons of time the wise and the simple have tried to put into words an intelligent definition of this most powerful and creative force. If they got too intellectual they lose sight of love. Raymond Charles Barker defined it this way, “Love is a creative emotion induced by relationships with people and maintained in balance.” It is the main, essential emotion of life, and it is creative, and it is an ever improving emotion when it is experienced. As wonderful as love is, it must be maintained with wisdom. We all have the capacity to love. We can love somebody or something. I know many in the Eastern Sierra that love fishing, and others who love to ski. Love is a healthy emotional release. Loving someone or something is essential for the quality of life itself. Without love that opposite energy can destroy all vital connections to health, prosperity and happiness. Love is not a duty, nor can it be forced. Love recognizes love in others. I have fairly recently found love with a beautiful and charming lady. I love her and she loves me. People have come up to each one of us and sensed that glow we have about us. The love in them is responding to the love in us; without words or any need for them. It is marvelous to see love in another, or even to feel it from your dog or cat. Now we must get back to the part of the definition the refers to maintaining in balance. As much as my lady and I are in love; that love must be tempered with wisdom. As each of us have different feeling triggers in our subconscious minds, there are places where we shouldn’t venture into, which could illicit a negative or destructive response. In short, to be maintained, love must be disciplined. You discipline your dog and he still loves you. Lovers can set parameters that enhances their love; it does not limit their love. Love is spiritual when it is balanced. It is intelligence and emotion in sync. Each of us has the capacity to love, and we can develop love. Some time after my beloved wife passed away, I was reading a Joseph Murphy book about the subconscious mind. He related how a young woman desired to meet a young man, and eventually get married. He told her to say to herself, “I am loved. I am appreciated, and I am wanted.” He told her to say this often and to meditate with those statements as a focal point. He doesn’t tell us how long it took, but he says that she was shortly planning her marriage. I am not a young woman, but I adopted those statements. As I drove to town I would say, “I am loved. I am appreciated and I am wanted.” Before sleep at night, I would say it, and upon waking I would say it. I knew I was ready for love but I had no idea where to start looking for it. Astonishingly, after a few weeks of repeating, I am loved. I am appreciated and I am wanted,” a beautiful lady, whom I had never seen before, came to the church on a Sunday morning. Into my life, love walked through the door. If you desire love in your life, claim love by declaring “I am Love” Walk it, talk it, and let it unfold. LOVE IS YOU! God is Love and Loving You Right Now!
