School Bell’s Ringing 2022 School supply lists and shopping local can ease us into school days Eastern Sierra, CA—Summer’s end is coming in the next few weeks, and with school starting soon, get prepared now. Back-to-school supplies are important. Look around for local businesses which can provide you with your school supply needs. And, remember, back-to-school has looked and been very different for the past two years during the pandemic, when students might not have even been in a classroom during the day.

Arithmetic and division problems looked a bit different during the mid-19th-century, and so did shopping for school supplies. Students’ days were grueling during colonial times, and grammar school started at 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. and from 1 to 4 p.m. (winter) and 5 p.m. (summer). Schools were year-round then, the quill pen was tied to your fingers for training, and school commonly only taught reading and writing, since most teachers weren’t often “arithmetickers” too, back then. Students can’t complain about writing assignments nowadays. Once upon a time, before 1850, when steel pens became commonplace, most students were responsible for trimming their own feather / quill pens with pen-knives (yes, knives are tools), and families had to make their own ink from dyes, barks, berries, and ashes, at home...daily, family homework. The average teacher in 1890 was a woman, made $256 annually, might have been forbidden to marry, wear fewer than two petticoats / undergarments, dye her hair, or “loiter in ice cream parlors.” Yikes!

Back-to-school supplies and expenses can be reduced by using hand-me-downs / multi-generational school tools, such as pencil sharpeners, pencil cases, compass sets, rulers, staplers, calculators, and hard-copy dictionaries (they don’t need batteries or a recharge!).

Summer’s coming to a close, and it’s back-toschool time for students and families. Make a shopping list, and check out local businesses to find the school supplies you need.

Back-in-the-day, students and families shopped for school clothes and supplies through the Montgomery Ward’s and Sears and Roebuck and Co. catalogs, mail orders delivered by our country’s first rural mail delivery service (1896). Ironically, these well-filled pages of consumer goods proved to be a small miracle for rural communities, when they didn’t have the big box department stores nearby. Hummm...sounds like today!

2018 RAM TRADESMAN, Crew Cab,4x, 6 cylinder engine. Has 84,000 miles, very good condition, includes ARE camper shell.
