“Las personas que nacen en Nayarit se les llama coras”--Carmen, owner of Las Coras Mexican Food Market People who are born in Nayarit (Mexico) are called Coras. Bishop, CA—The Coras are “indígena” or indigenous people of Cora, who live in North Western Mexico, and are bordered by Jalisco, Durango, and Sinaloa, Mexico. It is a mountainous region with canyons, and a coastline on the Pacific Ocean. The people grow beans, maize, and raise cattle. The seafood traditions of cerviche, a fisherman’s meal, come straight from the ocean, and camarones / shrimp are a part of an every day diet in some places. Las Coras, in the Bishop Plaza, Bishop, CA, opened in January 2021, and immediately filled a place in the local community. Carmen and her husband, Joel Alarcon, say, “Las personas que nacen en Nayarit se les llama coras,” which means, translated, people who are born in Nayarit (Mexico) are called Coras.
