A Sentimental Western Journey 2020 Bill Goodman, western painter, captures a “feeling” for the West

By Christina Reed The Hired Pen “The landscape of the American West has to be seen to be believed and has to be believed to be seen”--Navarre Scott Momaday Eastern Sierra, CA—Did you know Bill Goodman is a painter? Many who know the fellow from Swall Meadows, CA, might know he's lived in the Eastern Sierra for the better part of thirty years. However, Goodman says, few people know he's an accomplished painter. Like many of the lasting images and stories of the West, Goodman's artistic talents are self-made endeavors. He takes some time this summer to explain what makes his art such a sentimental western journey, and he's hoping his paintings invoke a certain feeling—one that lingers in your mind and spirit. “I've always loved painting the Eastern Sierra and wildlife,” Goodman notes. He is a romantic when it comes to his work, and he “comes up with a feeling of what I want to portray. A mood I want to paint.” This direction for painting is meant to “capture attention” in the painting's main subject, whether it's a cowboy throwing a loop out over a calf, or the interesting waters of the Tuolumne, he adds. “It may take me a day or two, or a month or two” to get the image onto the canvas, but he's working toward what “inspires me.” Inspiration comes fairly easy for Goodman, who is well-versed in western lore, music, art, and storytelling. Dick Goodman, Bill's father, is a former member of the traditional western musical group, The Reinsmen, and Bill says listening to his father's music and other western songs “make me think of a scene. I hear a verse, and it inspires me. Sometimes, I'll stop what I'm working on, and start on a new one [painting]. One verse inspires me.” He's particularly interested in the history of the American West. His recent experiences include being invited to be a part of the Cattlemen's Invitational Western Art Show in Paseo Robles, CA, and he's also organized the Bill Goodman's artwork displays a Death Valley 49ers' fall art show in the past. Residents and visitors romantic approach to his subjects, might remember seeing his paintings at the Mule Days Art Show, or and he “comes up with a feeling of what I want to portray.” Pictured is watched a demonstration at the Labor Day Art Show in Mammoth his oil painting “Apache Scout.” Lakes, CA. Goodman describes working on “color harmony in my paintings,” and “adding more cohesiveness to the painting.” He's also interested in revisiting his watercolors, which he notes

A resident of the Eastern Sierra, Bill Goodman's passion for painting isn't well known by many, but he's changing that with his artwork.

are “so unpredictable as to what the paint will do.” This requires “planning ahead on the steps.” Colors, light and shadows are also a focus, and with his “more harmonious colors,” he hopes to achieve a different effect. He adds, “you don't need to use every color in the rainbow. Just more harmonious colors.” And, he's “observing as much as I can,” so that his characters (such as riders and horses, or deer) are “connected, and balanced in position.” He concludes, “People have their own body language,” and so do “horses and deer.” Capturing this balance and connection is important to Goodman, as well as “trying not to do too much detail.” Just enough detail, “that your eye travels to a point of interest.” Goodman says he's missing his en plein air painting (a French term meaning painting outdoors, “in the open air”), and he talks about that special time around dawn or sunset. “You have about two hours to capture that.” He alludes to the plein air experience with images of a “cool breeze in the morning,” or the “bright morning sun.” He's recreating the feelings around him. Capturing a two dimensional image, and turning the experience into a three-dimensional painting. His artwork is currently displayed online and at the Bishop Art Supply store in downtown Bishop, CA.

August is Breastfeeding Awareness Month

On Saturday, August 1st, Inyo County Health & Human Services WIC and First 5 Programs are holding a socially distanced parade open to all to celebrate breastfeeding and raise awareness of the benefits of breastfeeding. It is a drive-through event following all local directives. Breastfeeding provides numerous benefits to babies and mothers. Breastfeeding helps protect babies from disease and is also beneficial for mothers, lowering their risk for some cancers. Drive by the Bishop WIC office or the Lone Pine HHS office between 10:00am and 12:00pm “between the naptimes on Saturday, August 1st, to show your support for breastfeeding and receive a free goodie bag. Pregnant and breastfeeding moms are eligible to enter our raffle for grand prizes, such as portable electric breast pumps or the Moby wrap baby carrier. Decorating your car or stroller is recommended, but not required. If you drive up, please stay in your car. If you walk up, please keep six-foot distance and wear a face covering. NIHD Begins screen patients, visitors, staff before entry

NORTHERN INYO HEALTHCARE DISTRICT

In 1946, Northern Inyo residents voted to create the NIHD special district to give our community quality, local healthcare. As we near our 75th anniversary, please know that your health and safety remain our top priorities. Decades of staff diligence earned us one of the nation’s lowest surgical infection rates. We’ve taken those lessons from our Operating Rooms and applied them across our campus. Please know whether you choose to see us virtually or in-person, we’re here for you and we’re ready for you. We’ve increased Telehealth services to keep you connected with your health providers. We ask those coming into our facilities be free of COVID symptoms and wear a mask covering both the nose and mouth. Temperature screenings may be required. Have COVID-19 symptoms? Call ahead to (760) 873-2849 and we will get you scheduled for our drive-through testing services. We are staggering appointment times to limit how many people are in our Waiting Rooms and to maintain Social Distancing. Lab Draws require an appointment. When you do come in for appointments, we’ve added Waiting Room safeguards such as dividers, properly spaced chairs, hand sanitizers, and more for your protection. Every patient is treated in areas that have been thoroughly cleaned and sanitized.

NORTHERN INYO HEALTHCARE DISTRICT One Team. One Goal. Your Health.

Mandatory COVID-19 screenings will begin Monday morning at Northern Inyo Healthcare District. This means all non-emergent patients, as well as visitors and staff, must undergo a quick temperature check and answer some health questions in order to enter any NIHD facility. It is suggested patients arrive a bit early while staff adjusts to this new routine. Please remember that face masks are required on the NIHD campus. The screening model is simple. To access the hospital or Administrative building during the day (6 a.m.–6 p.m.), use the hospital’s Main Lobby. To access the hospital in the evening after 6 p.m., use the Emergency Department entrance. Screening occurs as you enter. All ancillary and clinic patients may proceed to their expected destination. Screening occurs as you enter each clinic or service. The clinics and ancillary services include: • Rural Health Clinic • Rural Health Women's Clinic • Internal Medicine • Pediatrics & Allergies • Orthopedics • Specialty Clinic • Diagnostic Imaging • Rehabilitation Services Screening includes a quick no-contact temperature reading and questions about COVID-19 symptoms. COVID-19 symptoms include: • Fever higher than 100 degrees • Sore throat • Cough • Shortness of breath • Fatigue • Nausea • Vomiting • Diarrhea • Unexplained muscle aches or headaches • Loss of smell or taste • Nasal congestion not related to seasonal allergies

Questions about possible COVID exposures or diagnoses also will be asked. Those permitted to enter, receive a sticker to show clearance. For those not approved to enter, staff will refer them back to their primary care provider. Providers may arrange for testing at their office if needed. Also, the Rural Health Clinic offers drive-in testing. For details, call (760) 873-2849. For records requests, please call Medical Records, (760) 8732152, in advance. Doing so gives staff time to process the request and arrange for safe release of the records. All NIHD staff will also undergo daily screening when arriving for work. A dated sticker on their identification badge shows they passed screening that day. These screenings help NIHD align with newer federal and state guidelines. Kelli Davis, NIHD's Interim Chief Executive Officer, said the District remains highly committed to protecting the health and safety of its patients, their families, and the healthcare professionals and staff. “Our communities are our priority, Davis said. “We encourage everyone wear face masks and practice social distancing. We remind them to their wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds several times throughout the day. If we approach this together, we can get through this together. Questions? Please call our Admissions Team at (760) 873-5811.

Bishop Rotary Clubs to hold fundraising drawing to help local businesses in their economic recovery The Rotary Clubs of Bishop are launching a fundraising drawing as part of their effort to help the economic recovery of our community. The need is great, and the Bishop Rotary Clubs have resolved to identify which local recovery efforts will benefit most from financial assistance, and then help to meet those needs. The clubs have established a COVID Community Assistance Fund from which they will use a phased approach to help small businesses, children and families, and education.  Phase 1 of this Rotary project is assisting small local businesses through a fundraising drawing. Small businesses are the heart of our community. They bring life to our community. They employ residents and provide income so employees can feed their families and pay their rents. Our community cannot thrive without our businesses and their employees.  The Rotary Clubs are coordinating with the Bishop Chamber of Commerce to activate a second round of small business grants. Grants will be awarded to

help businesses make modifications to meet COVID specific requirements and to help with their use of digital technology to serve their customers and sustain and potentially grow their businesses with an effective online and social media presence. The fundraising drawing will be run through GoFundMe and can be accessed by this link https://bit.ly/2CLbftB.  Everyone who donates $100 or more at this site will automatically be entered into a drawing for three separate prizes. Anyone over the age of 21 may enter the drawing for free (no donation required) by sending an email to bishopcovidrecovery@gmail.co m (please include your name and contact information.) All donations and emails must be received by August 15, 2020.  The fundraising drawing prizes have all been donated and are definitely worth a donation for this worthy cause. 1st Prize - One case of Napa Valley wines hand-selected by Kelly Rios, Vineyard Operations Manager and viticulturist for Renteria Vineyard Management Company. The case includes two each of: Venge Scout's Honor Red Blend, Plumpjack Reserve

Chardonnay, Venge Jewell Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc, Venge Signal Fire Zinfandel, Cade Sauvignon Blanc and Croix Pinot Noir. 2nd Prize - A prime selection of California Olive Oils and an Italian Balsamic Vinegar from the St. Helena Olive Oil Company including Jaeger Family EVOO. Jaeger is a Napa Valley Extra Virgin Olive Oil made from Italian and Spanish varietal olives sourced from the Jaeger property on the valley floor in Napa. Lemon EVOO is made from a blend of essential oil from organic lemons with late harvest California Extra Virgin Olive Oil. The traditional balsamic vinegar is from a small producer in Modena, Italy that has been supplying St. Helena Olive Oil Company for over 25 years.  3rd Prize - Two bottles of sparkling wine from the Napa Valley. The Rotary Clubs have a goal of $7,500 to be raised through this fundraising drawing.  In mid-August there will be a drawing which will be broadcast live on the Sierra Wave radio station and simultaneously on the Rotary Club of Bishop Sunrise Facebook page.

Check the Bishop Sunrise Rotary website for updates and more details about the prizes as

they become available, www. bishopsunriserotary.org. For more information email
