The Best in the Desert 2019

The longest off-road race in the U. S. By Christina Reed The Hired PenLas Vegas to Reno, Nevadaâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;It's off-roading in the desert at its bestâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;The Best in the Desert Racing Association (BITD), General Tire, race from Las Vegas to Reno, Nevada, and it's happening near our big backyard, in parts of western Nevada, called the Pioneer Territory, including Goldfield, Tonopah, Millers, Blair Junction, Mina, Gabbs, with a finish line at Dayton, Nevada. Ranked as â&#x20AC;&#x153;The longest off-road race in the United States,â&#x20AC;? the BITD takes place on August 14-17, 2019. The race is 500- plus-miles of dirt, and features racing classes which include: motorcycles, quads, UTVs (utility vehicles), trucks (trick trucks), dune buggies, SUVs, Jeeps, and cars. However, these aren't your average, run-of-the-mill off-road vehicles, by any means. These racers achieve speeds of 60-70 mph (motorcycles), and well over 100 mph in the ultra classes of vehicles. Casey Folks Jr. (1944-2017), the founder of the event more than 20 years ago (1984), is credited with the creation of this epic off-road race. Casey took on every sort of off-road racing or event, and he was an organizer of the Nevada 2000, the single longest off-road race in US. He is also the originator of the Best in the West Desert Racing Association (1984), at the time for off-road motorcycles. Living in and near BITD's headquarters, in Las Vegas, his sons, Daryl and Bryan Folks remain a vital part of the BITD, and Event Coordinator at BITD, Liz Marshall, says more than 360 race teams are slated to start early at dawn on the morning of Friday, August 16, for nearly 24 hours of non-stop racing. Men and women compete in the many different classes, including age groups. Teams begin early, and are given 24-hours to finish the race (due to difficulty and length), before the awards ceremony at the Sparks Nugget, Saturday evening, August 17.

What's It Like Out There from Pit to Pit? From point-to-point, that's how this race is finished, in ONE DAY! Point-to-point being the pit stops from start (at 6 AM) to finish (about 8 PM). The starting point is Texas Station, Beatty, Nevada, and to the next pit stop (1), at Springdale, it's 31.5 miles. Pit 1 to Pit 2 at Bonnie Claire is 25.5 miles. Pit 2 to 3 at Cottontail is 40.2 miles. Pit 3 to Pit 4 at Goldfield is 28.8 miles. By the time the racers reach Goldfield, they've traveled 126 miles of dirt roads, sandy washes, hills, and elevation gains between 3,000 feet to nearly 6,000 feet (Goldfield). Only 424 miles to go! Leaving Goldfield the racers enter a challenging section through Paymaster Canyon, with Lone Mountain out on the horizon, big horn sheep and a small herd of wild horses living nearby. This area was famous for the gold and silver strikes during the early 1900s, when Goldfield and Tonopah were on the gold mining maps of the world. Pit 4 to Pit 5 at Tonopah is an uphill climb of 36.5 miles. The racers criss-cross around Tonopah at several points along US Highway 6 / US Highway 95, and spectators can see them near Millers, where Pit 6, at 208 race miles is located. Pit 6 to Pit 7, at Blair Junction, is 31.7 miles and then it's onward toward Pit 8 at Redlich (a 26.4-mile stretch near the Monte Cristo Range).

Gentry The old Southern Pacific railroad town of Mina lays ahead as Pit 9, 45.9 miles of hard travel. The race takes a turn to the northeast from Mina, and the run to Pit 10 at Gabbs will be the significantly long haul, at 52.2 miles. Then, the most remote Pit 11 at Rawhide, in the middle of nowhere, Nevada comes at 27.8 miles. The race is 392 miles long at this point. From Pit 11 to Pit 12, at Top Gun, near Fallon Naval Air Station, Nevada it's 36.2 miles. Pit 13, at Weeks, near Fort Churchill State Historic Park is 31 miles closer to the finish line at Dayton, which is 45.8 miles to the checkered flag...505 miles total.

Desert Off-Road Racing Isn't for the Faint-Hearted Attention to the mile markers and GPS systems makes it difficult to get lost on this long and arduous race. However, the racers and pit crews aren't really looking at the landscape like a tourist might...it's going by too fast. It's thrilling, it's dangerous, and competition is fierce. These racers have been going up against each other all year, in other desert off-roading events, and this is the BIG DADDY of them all. The racers worry about pacing themselves for the very long day, they try to manage their energy levels for a day of extremely hard, physical work, and they keep hydrated in the high, remote, dry mountainous desert landscape. Spirit Unfolding I want to start this article with a kind of disclaimer. I support every church, because I believe their intention is to help the people they serve to live a more fulfilling life. If the church or faith you attend or follow fits the needs you require; by all means continue in it. If not, do seek out a new direction for your faith. We all need something we can believe in and benefit from its teachings. I can safely say that I have attended many churches in my life, and I believe I have been blessed by each one, even if it was not to my liking. By the very definition of minister, they attempt to guide and lead the way to your own valuation as a child of the most High. Now its time to address the purpose of this article Too many faiths preach that you need spiritual unfoldment to attain the desired life that is essential to your living up to God’s plan for you. They are not necessarily wrong, except you don’t need spiritual unfoldment, you are Spirit unfolding. Everything needed to improve your life is within you, as you, Now. You have all the tools needed to move forward in your life, at your disposal right now. You have always had them, whether you knew it or not. The time has come to put them to work, and you do that through a personal commitment to follow what you know to be good for you, harms no one, blesses everyone, and benefits life itself. I know that kind of sounds like a pretty lofty goal, but a commitment like that opens the door to new and vibrant ideas. A look at the history of thought shows how the Spanish Inquisition attempted to stifle new or innovative thoughts, and the ‘Dark Ages’ followed. Without new ideas, we would still be in those dark ages. It is hard to even imagine where we would be if new ideas had been encouraged, rather then stifled. Open your mind to new possibilities. Let ideas penetrate the status quo. Every innovation started with and idea ‘outside the box’ of what was known. The boundaries of what was known have been extended beyond what was thought and they have no limits of expansion. This applies to emotional well being as well. Negative emotional responses can be deadlier than any weapon of mass destruction. We have been given the opportunity to love and be loved, but love is something you must work at. It can be the pleasurable thing you have ever had, but it doesn’t just fall into your lap. Buddha talked of tolerance as a way of embracing love. It is not capitulation, but acceptance that others have their way, though it may not be your way. Love that we have a choice Follow your heart. Even your enemies have a choice. Let them live with it. It will not come unto you, unless you invite it. Spirit in you is love, let it do the work it must do. Stand back and see the revealing of a great experience of love, of truth and well being. It is there for you now. Let Spirit reveal the wonders through you, right now. God is Love and Loving you Right Now!
