By Christina Reed, The Hired Pen Downtown Bishop, CA—The holiday season opened on a particularly festive note in downtown Bishop, on the first day of December, and residents and visitors from far and wide came to watch the annual Christmas Parade, followed by the tree lighting and Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus. Then, it was onward to shopping, visiting, and seeing lots of people at the Street of Lights, with bonfires, hot food and beverages, live music, Christmas caroling, and all-around grand holiday cheer. The Bishop Chamber of Commerce and Visitor’s Center gets involved in coordinating all of the festivities, and Chamber Executive, Tawni Thomson, said the events went smoothly, and Chamber Events Coordinator, April Leeson, was all smiles at

the Street of Lights, with family and neighbors. Scenes from the many events show a lot of smiles and spirit, and the weather was close to snow, but it didn’t on this year’s parade. Although it sure was cold enough to keep folks excited about the upcoming holidays. Go from where you are to where you want to be It has always been fascinating how athletes’ continually set new records when competing with other finely tuned athletes. One could say that better equipment, modern training techniques and better venues where responsible; while all of these are contributing factors, there is much more at work. When I first started training for a marathon, the world record was about two hours and ten minutes. One by one runners reduced that time to less than two hours today. When I ran cross-country in high school, running shoes were little more than deck shoes. The modern shoe is designed to fit the individual to maximize performance. I used to say that you needed a college degree just to comprehend what each shoe offered. It is interesting when sports commentators attempt to assemble a dream team from the greats that have gone on before. Was Mohamed Ali really the greatest or was Joe Louis or Max Snelling superior. The truth we may never know, other than the fact that they were superior in their time, which should satisfy the pundits. It is said that the average man draws on only about 10% of his real capacity; the other 90% is mostly submerged and unused. What if we could expand on what we are drawing from that capacity? Actually, we do expand when we go from where we are to where we want to be. I was never real fast, but I could run for long time.. At first I could run a mile in about 10 minutes, but, with training, I was running under 7 minutes a mile for 6.2 miles. The difference between the 10 minutes to the under 7 was one of commitment and training. To improve my speed required commitment to schedule for improvement. Better methods and equipment helped, but without the commitment, it would be futile. One difference between someone like me and the elite athlete is how much time they can devote to their training. In effect, their training is a full-time job, while my job was to take care of my family. Perhaps, I exceeded the 10% with regard to my family or my job, which balanced out with my running. We really have no idea how far we can go. We can readily say that our heroes, messiahs, saviors and innovators have far exceeded the 10% barrier. The Bible says we were created in the image and after the likeness of God. That makes each of us an offspring of God. God is 100%. Why should we settle for 10%? Of course, all those sermons calling us worms in the dust didn’t help. The Bible, the Upanishads and many other ancient texts contains stories of miraculous deeds and events. Every day we exceed records set years ago. At one time it was said that if man tried to travel faster than sixty miles an hour, he would disintegrate. If I attempted to go slower, I might get run off the road, and I would never get to Bishop. Make a commitment to be all that you can be. The way will open up for you. The right helpers, the right time and the right place will appear. Grab the reins and give the horse a nudge and the world of wonder will open to you God is Love and Loving You Right Now!.
