Bishop’s “Job Spot:” Attending college in a old, remade brick and mortar storefront

*This is the third story in a series of three (The Sierra Reader issues: November 19, and November 26, 2020) pieces which explore Bishop's “Job Spot,” the newest educational partnership between a Main Street storefront business owner, Cerro Coso Community College, and the Inyo County Office of Education. Downtown Bishop, CA—How would it be to attend a college class in an old Main Street remodeled brick and mortar storefront? What would the interior space look like? Would it look like a traditional classroom at a community college? Would it look like a school setting at all? Are students going to attend classes year-round, and at night? Are the students going to be a mixture of high schoolers and adults? Dr. Chad Houck, Cerro Coso Community College's Dean of Instruction, says Bishop's “Job Spot” is being built with future adult learning and job training in mind instead of a “traditional school setting.” Houck notes that “going onto a college campus can be intimidating,” and so Inyo County Office of Education (ICOE) and Cerro Coso (CCCC) are aiming for a more welcoming and convenient location closer to where people live and work. The goal is to meet adult learners where they are at, and they believe that an adult education and job center on Main Street will help achieve that goal. * The “Job Spot,” the newest of Cerro Coso Community Colleges' (CCCC) outreach programs. It is modeled after the Bakersfield Job Spot, an adult education partnership developed in 2017 by the Bakersfield Adult School (BAS) principal Mark Wyatt. That Job Spot helps BAS and Bakersfield College to better serve the southern reaches of Bakersfield. Located in a newer shopping mall complex, the Bakersfield Job Spot has been successful at meeting the adult students where they presently live and work. Houck explains that the Consortium which includes Kern, Inyo and Mono Counties, fully supports adult education partnerships like the Bakersfield Job Spot and Bishop Job Spot, as these co-location partnerships “help to meet the needs of the students, such as finishing high school, transitioning to college, or learning essential job skils, all in one place,” Houck adds. * (Source: email interview notes, December 6, 2020) “I want to make my life better, and how can we help you?” “There are over two million students” in adult education in the state, Houck continues, and “115 community colleges in California.” Houck outlines other benefits of California's community colleges, including providing college coursework “for a fraction of the price of a four-year [college].” Students can transfer two years of community college education, and complete the last two years at a four-year school. And, with the recently enacted and extended adult student “concurrent enrollment,” students from high school or community college can complete work on a high

school diploma, and be concurrently enrolled, tuition free, at the community college and “Job Spot.” Houck says, “this is very exciting,” and began in the state last year. Who might the potential adult student be at the “Job Spot”? Someone, says Houck, who says, “I want to make my life better.” At which point, the Job Spot staff / instructors say, “How can we help you?” “Seventy percent of high school students don't go onto college,” Houck explains, and so the potential adult student may be someone looking to complete a high school diploma, or improve job skills, or a person who needs the first two years to get acquainted with collegelevel coursework before transferring to a high level of learning. Someone who wants to make their life better.

8 Dear Bishop Voters,

I am both humbled and honored that you have placed your confidence and support in me when elected me as your City Council member. I feel blessed as I begin this new era and I assure you that I will represent you with the utmost compassion, honesty, and integrity. I would like to thank my family and friends for their unrelenting love and support, but mostly I thank God. It is with Him that I will continue to serve all residents in Bishop. I want to extend my gratitude to everyone who helped and supported me during my campaign. I especially want to thank those who voted for me, the countless homeowners and business owners for allowing me to post a campaign sign on their front yard or their business window. My most sincere appreciation for their support and contribution to Noe Gadea, Barbara Laughon and my campaign manager, Cheryl Underhill. I assure you that as your City Council member, I will listen to your concerns and will always put the best interests of the voters first. I will always work on a foundation of values that are important to serving you – honesty, integrity and transparency. Thank you all for making this possible. I look forward to serving the City of Bishop for many years to come. Sincerely, Jose S. Garcia

HELP WANTED Insurance Scouts continues to grow– we are looking for our next team member: Position- Total Protection Team, New Business Sales Producer Insurance Scouts Insurance Agency, Mammoth Lakes, CA 93546 Employment Type: Full Time Ability to work in office, remotely, and independently while achieving goals.

Fast forward to the 21st century, and in January 2021, the old Dusey Haberdashery storefront will become the “Job Spot,” the newest adult education co-location of a partnership between Cerro Coso Community College, the Inyo County Office of Education, and the Gadea family, owners of the historic building.

The Gadeas have owned the Main Street property for the past 15 years, and are delighted to see the old 1900s building, “Dusey's Haberdashery,” gain a new prominence in downtown Bishop. There are many moving parts to getting an old storefront back into active use in the 21st century, and Mark Gadea Construction and Tyson Sparrow, with the City of Bishop's building inspection and permits, have been at the project for the past year. The entire building from the inside out will be renovated, and modernized. However, rest assured, the parts of the new storefront won't be dragged from another mining ghost town, which was want to happen 110 years ago.

ICOE Superintendent, Barry Simpson, helped the county join the Kern Adult Education Consortium, and the Consortium invested (through Kern Community College District) funding to create the adult education center. Randy Cook, Associate Superintendent for ICOE, outlined in a previous story (see The Sierra Reader issue November 26, 2020) the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between ICOE and CCCC, and this MOU will be looked at in the next two years. Sean Hancock, CCCC President, is a part of the ongoing investments in the Bishop Job Spot, and the support of the building's renovations. It's a “great match,” Cook adds, as he describes the classroom / storefront setting for the region's newest adult classrooms. The goals: “to provide a safe, comfortable, and personalized environment to learn in. A lounge with a coffee-house feel. Different learning spaces, from pairs to four [people].” The classrooms will be synchronized with other satellite classrooms, within the Cerro Coso Community College systems. The programs can be online from Lone Pine in the south, to northern Inyo County communities. Technology and online access will be a central feature of the “Job Spot,” with assistance at the ICOE and Chad Houck, Cerro Coso Community Colleges' Dean of In- Cerro Coso Community struction, walks in the old Dusey's Haberdashery storefront College levels. The newly envisioned Job Spot will take over the old Dusey's Haberdashery storefront on Main Street in downtown Bishop, CA, with a soft-opening planned the end of January 2021. It will be a building of importance in the small eastern Sierra town, with more than 80 adult students awaiting the new digs at the center of town. What was once a men's clothing store with tailors, and down the street a livery and stables, busy trading posts and feed stores, grew up and became filling stations, highways, and commercial centers, which in turn lead to entrepreneurship, town halls, and the continuous need to reinvent ourselves. American ingenuity is a grand testimony to our reuse of our local resources, and education does ultimately end up being the mother-of-all-inventions....

We are a mixed practice veterinary hospital delivering a full spectrum of medical, surgical and diagnostic services to our community. Hours: Monday - Friday 8 am - 5:30 pm • Saturday: 8-12:30 and 1:30-5 pm
