The Spirit of Thanksgiving Not so many years ago, a man and his wife had a thought, a shared dream about giving back to the community in which they grew up and raised their family in. You see, for many years their family (their children and spouses, grandchildren, great grandchildren, other extended family and close friends) joined together for their holiday meal celebrations at the Big Pine Town Hall, as the size of their family had long since outgrown their home on Callina Street. Occasionally, during one of these holiday celebrations, a wayward soul would wander in thinking there was some community event taking place and they would be encouraged to join in the feast. This spirit of giving, gave them the idea of hosting a free community dinner, after all their family was filled with some extraordinary cooks. A few years went by and the wife passed away just before the holidays. It was during that holiday season that the man shared with his family, the idea that he and his wife had. The family thought it was a wonderful idea and planned to host the first annual Free Community Thanksgiving Dinner. It was an excellent way to honor the shared dream of their parents. The first year was small but a success. On Thursday November 28, 2019, the spirit of Thanksgiving was in the air and the snow fell. The tables were set and radiant with the colors of fall. There was an abundance of delicious food and the kids were eager to help. People came in waves, some were alone, some were elderly, some were in a group, but all were hungry. As the snow fell, we joined hands and said a blessing, to give thanks for all we have, for our families, for health, for love and kindness to all and for the falling snow. Our family

shared our love and laughter with those around us. We believe that sharing a meal brings people closer together and by cultivating gratitude we lead happier and more fulfilled lives. Thanksgiving is the holiday of peace…a festival that shows us the beauty of seedtime and harvest, as poetry speaks about the turn of the seasons. As the last of the guests had finished partaking of the Thanksgiving feast, the ever so helpful kids helped themselves to a playful snowball fight, they are after all kids. When all was done, with the chairs put away and the last serving dish cleaned, we deemed it another small success. We gave hugs, wished each other a Happy Thanksgiving and got into our cars to head home and the snow kept falling.
Climbing rangers start patrol of Buttermilks/Tablelands The Bishop Area Climbers Coalition, Eastern Sierra Interpretive Association (ESIA), and Friends of the Inyo in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management Bishop Field Office, and the Inyo National Forest have hired two climbing rangers to patrol the increasingly popular climbing and bouldering areas in the Bishop area. The Bishop Area Chamber of Commerce, Geraldine C. and Emory M. Ford Foundation, Touchstone Climbing Inc., along with individual organization fundraising events have contributed funds to help support the two climbing ranger positions. The rangers will be focused on the Tablelands, Happys and Sads, the Buttermilks, Pine Creek, the Owens River Gorge and Upper Gorge, the Sacreds, and the Druids.
Alexa Flower
One of the main goals for the rangers is to provide education to climbers about where to park and camp, Leave No Trace principles, and climbing etiquette. Events like climber coffees will help develop a community forum for climbers in the area. The climbing rangers will also track visitor use patterns including documenting parking and camping uses and tracking changes over time. Lastly, the rangers will oversee restoration and stewardship activities such as campsite clean-up, trail delineation, educational signage, planting native plants in heavily used areas, etc. They will help coordinate volunteer events and look to remedy issues such as off-road travel and otherwise recommend long-term solutions to increasing use patterns.
