lnyo Deputy Probation Officer Receives Statewide Recognition fromthe Chief Probation Officers of California for Regional Employee of the Year

Sacramento, Calif. - December 8,2022 - lnyo Deputy Probation Officer lll Penni Brown was recognized at the statewide 2022 Annual Chief Probation Officers of California Awards Ceremony as Regional Employee of the Year. This award is given to an employee of any rank selected by CPOC for meritorious service, significant contributions, career achievement among other reasons warranting recognition.

“We are honored to recognize Penni Brown for her work serving youth, “ said Jeff Thomson, Chief of lnyo County. “Her leadership and dedication to providing research and training to her coworkers is incredible as she helps our department serve the community with common-sense safety.”

Deputy Probation Officer lll, Penni Brown, is a 1 2-year veteran of the lnyo County Probation Department. DPO Brown began her career serving the juvenile population and has worked in both juvenile and adult divisions throughout her career. She is well liked and respected by her peers, so it was not a surprise when she volunteered to create a peer supporUwellness program for the department. DPO Brown has invested significant time and energy into research and training to provide a much-needed service to her fellow coworkers. As a 12-year veteran, she felt that it was her duty to help the younger less experienced officers understand vicarious trauma, mental health first aid, and personal wellness as it related to the work we do.

“Penni Brown has showcased compassion and dedication as she makes sure that her coworkers and clients are empowered with the tools and resources to care for themselves,” said John Keene, President of CPOC. “We are grateful that probation consists of such compassionate individuals who strive to provide resources that help individuals find better pathways.”

DPO Brown has been able to implement two large, robust programs in lnyo County not only benefitting the probation department but also benefiting partner agencies all while performing all the duties and services that are required of a rural county probation officer, which is everything from law enforcement referral to case management. DPO Brown is a great example of a CPOC employee of the year, and she epitomizes the lnyo County Probation Department motto of “Community, Pride, and Progress.”

The Chief Probation Officers of California (CPOC) is an association of all 58 counties with a shared identity as law enforcement leaders. CPOC is committed to a research-based approach to public safety that promotes positive behavior change. Their leadership guides policy and practice in prevention, community-based corrections, secure detention for youth, and direct human services. Eastern Sierra, CA-- Did you see Santa Claus recently? He and Mrs. Claus have been spotted at numerous places in the eastern side of California. He and the Mrs. braved winter weather last weekend to make appearances at Ace High Country Lumber, downtown Bishop, and the Laws Railroad Museum. Some folks might have even seen the Grinch, who couldn’t steal the spirit of the season away from the community members who shared holiday cheer at Ace High Country Lumber.

Holiday Scenes from the Eastside Ace High Country Lumber pulled out all of the stops for a wonderful evening event in Bishop, CA, December 9, and the Christmas Tree sale proceeds benefitted the Bishop High School Ice Hockey Team. The Bronco Bake sale was a hit with everyone, and the holiday arts and crafts sale brought a lot of smiles to the participants. Santa Claus and the Grinch stole the show, and the warm baked chocolate chip cookies and treats on the Traeger barbecue was a hit with everyone beginning their adventure that evening.

historic Laws Railroad Museum hosted the Railroad Express event on December 10, and the crowds were happy to wait for their train and wagon rides, and enjoy the arts and crafts, baked goods, Santa on the Brill Car, and the weather held out for the most part of the day. The Bishop Chamber of Commerce, Inyo County, and the City of Bishop all had parts in the event’s success, and the kids were thrilled to get out and explore all of the unique exhibits at Laws.

The Laws Railroad Museum, outside of Bishop, CA, was the setting for the holiday trains and treats event at the Railroad Express. Frosty the Snowman and others, including Smoky the Bear and Santa greeted visitors, like Joe Lerille, at right, from Duarte, CA, to Laws last weekend.

Wagon rides, provided by Rock Creek Pack Station’s mules handlers, Mark Midgett and Marge Denton, at the Laws Railroad Museum’s Railroad Express, were a part of the treats for visitors last weekend.

Santa took a sleigh ride to Ace High Country Lumber last week, and kids from all over the valley came to spend some time talking to Santa, and telling him their holiday wishes.

The Bishop High School Ice Hockey Team members, from left, Aiden Scott, Caleb Gillem, Jacob Gilbert, and Ellie O’Neill, served up fresh holiday baked goods, helped customers with their Christmas tree sales, and all of the proceeds benefitted the hockey team.

Ace High Country Lumber’s elves were all jolly and bright with enthusiasm at the Holiday event recently, and from left, Jordyn Brown, Jazmin Hernandez, Amber Thomas, and Rya Arnold greeted customers to the event.

Thomas “Dan” Cheshire Jr Obituary

Thomas “Dan” Cheshire Jr., 42, was born on October 5, 1980, in the small town of Bishop, California to Thomas and Karen Cheshire. His early life was full of enthusiasm for the trade of butchery, and he worked as a butcher while still in high school at Manor Market. In 1998, at just 18 years old, Dan graduated from Bishop Union High School and soon afterwards moved to Reno, Nevada where he tried his hand at a short-lived career in construction while continuing to pursue his skills as a meat cutter and butcher.

In 2002 at the age of 22, Dan returned home to Bishop, California where he found his true professional calling as a Journeyman Meat Cutter. His first job as a professional meat cutter was with Joseph’s Bi-Rite Market before taking an offer from Von’s Grocery Supermarket where he eventually finished the remainder of his career until his untimely passing on November 22nd, 2022.

Outside of work, Dan had an avid love for the outdoors that could be seen through his hunting and fishing trips around California and beyond. He spent countless hours chasing quail throughout the valley, camping out in Coyote, crawdad fishing along the riverbanks, and taking hunting trips out to Tule Lake; truly living life to its fullest with every adventure he embarked on. For anyone who knew him personally would know just how much Dan cherished his family by all the stories he shared over time - including memories that will never be forgotten.

Dan is survived by his father and stepmother Thomas and Julie (Gooch) Cheshire along with his mother Karen Cheshire, sister DeAnne Cheshire, brother and sister-in-law, Edua and AngjiCheshire, brother and sister-in-law, Douglas and Amy Cheshire, sister and brother-in-law Ellice and Phillip Turner, stepgrandmother Patricia Gooch, Ryan and Jeanne Warbington as well as 9 nieces and nephews, 4 great nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

Dan was preceded in death by his grandparents Douglas and Rita Stanek, Edsal and Laurel Cheshire, and stepgrandfather, James Gooch.

Dan will be cremated. His ashes will be buried at East Line Street Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Elks Lodge 151 E. Line Street, at 1:30pm, December 17th, 2022. All are welcome to come join family and friends celebrate Dan’s life together.
